How we put our classroom knowledge to start a business venture on Friendship Day!

They say that a journey of a thousand miles start with one small step. For the four of us – Eureka, Lidiya, Shubhanshi and Smriti Pandey – our ‘Friendship Day’ business venture started out as just a casual chat. On the 31st of July, 2012 there was a small charity event being organised by the students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. The four of us thought that it would be a good opportunity to test our managerial skills – to put our ‘bookish knowledge’ to practical use.

The first thing was to decide on the products that would form a part of our ‘Friendship Day’ stall. The major challenge was to select products that would attract people to our stall, without making them feel that they were spending too much money. We decided that cakes, juices and Swiss chocolates could be sold in no time, even in unsure market conditions. As a high-risk-high-gain part of our stall, we included a few friendship bands, counting them straightaway as ‘bad debts’.

Next, we gave the location some thought. July falls bang in the middle of the monsoon season, so we chose a location in the vicinity of the Jaipuria Noida Mess.. We reasoned that it was a place that every consumer would have to cross before going in for lunch.

The pricing was the point which generated the least debate between the four of us. Our focus consumers were mostly students, and we knew exactly what their average pocket money and willingness to spend on a particular product would be. We priced the chocolate cake at Rs. 20/- and the pineapple cake at Rs. 15/- a slice. Juices were priced at Rs. 20/- per glass.Having taken care of the basics, we got down to the creative part – Promotion. The 31st of July was a Tuesday, so we began Promotions for our stall on Saturday, the 28th of July. We didn’t want the excitement to die down, and since our products were basic and did not need consumer enlightenment, this worked. We began by sending e-mails to everyone, and invited the faculty of Jaipuria Noida by distributing fliers to each one of them. Of course, our attractive posters were pasted across the Jaipuria Noida campus as well.

We made one big mistake, though; once the event began, we realised that we had underestimated our customers… and ourselves. In fact, we had played it too safe. When we think of it today, we realise that we could’ve made a killing on Friendship Day. Our stuff – including the friendship bands – was sold out in no time! There were a few other things we noticed, which could’ve make things smoother for us. For instance, we could have kept a dustbin handy, put up some banners and posters near the counter, thereby channelising potential customers towards our stall. Maybe we could have advanced our Promotions by a few days as well.

All said and done, this was a big confidence booster for the four of us. We got a very good response from the market, and as and when opportunity comes our way, we’ll scale this stall up by adding more products, and use this experience to make things smoother.

Our revenues from this initiative are being donated to a charitable trust. We hope that next time around we make more money out of our venture to serve this noble cause better!

Movie Club Inaugurated at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida recently launched its movie club – “Entertainment with a Purpose”. On the occasion, the movie club faculty coordinator, Dr.Ritika Gugnani spoke to campus journalists (CJs), Geetika Goyal and Priyanka Priya.

CJs: What was the need for a movie club?

Dr. Ritika: Students of Jaipuria Institute of Management have come from various parts of the country. So if we pick and screen movies from different nations, different cultures and different languages it will depict and help the students understand cultural strong points, which would be very beneficial for them. The main objective of the movie club is to enhance the communication skills of the students by exposing them to international movies, besides the more obvious motive of entertainment, which the students need after long hours with academics.

CJs: What was the purpose behind choosing the movie that was screened at the inaugural session?

Dr. Ritika: The name of the movie was Invictus. The main purpose of choosing this movie was that the London Olympics were going on and the movie was based on a sports theme. Sports inculcate a sense of leadership and team building in the minds of the students. They help in capturing how ordinary people are capable of extraordinary things.

CJs: What is the motive behind the movie club?

Dr. Ritika: There is definitely a motive attached to it. We’ll encourage student discussions after the movie is over. This way, the students will try and identify what they learnt from the movie. The students will, of course, come and enjoy the movie but now there will be a learning attached to it.

CJs: What is the future plans for the movie club?

Dr. Ritika: We expect that more and more students will come together to watch movies. So there will be a fun element of expectation instilled in the students that ‘today is the movie day’. In future, we plan to have musical activities where people will be encouraged to sing and have fun.

FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Jaipur

“I teach students at Jaipuria institute of management, Jaipur from the point of view of their employability and career growth in the corporate world.”

With more than 35 years of multi-functional corporate experience, Professor S.P. Garg is regarded as a great asset to Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur. Professor S.P. Garg has had some spectacular assignments in the corporate world, such as AGM, New York office, and Chief Executive of Fiji territory at the Bank of Baroda. Even during his corporate stint, Professor Garg always had a passion for teaching. He had various instructional assignments for educating young managers while at Bank of Baroda, including that of the Principal of Bank of Baroda Staff College for Regional Rural Banks, in Lucknow, from 1982 to 1985.

“After superannuation in 2009, I decided to cherish this passion for teaching and joined Jaipuria Jaipur as full-time faculty. So far, I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. I teach students from the point of view of their employability and career growth in the corporate world. This requires a lot of creativity and enthusiasm.”

Professor Garg’s areas of core competence in teaching are Banking, Strategy Management, International Business and Corporate Governance. He does not believe in touching subjects, which he does not feel passionately about, as he believes that passion is the most important ingredient in teaching.

“I strongly believe that students must be provided with skills to handle real-life situations. This is the persistent demand from industry, as has been highlighted at various forums. I have been a student of great management gurus like Ravi Mathai, Samuel Paul, Ishwar Dayal, K.K.S. Chauhan and Kamla Chaudhari. Just like them, my philosophy is to ‘make teaching relevant, purposeful and rewarding’. The case study method, taught to me by the Father of case study pedagogy, Professor Vora, at IIM (A) is my real application in Jaipuria Jaipur.”

Apart from a being a Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB), Professor Garg’s academic background lies entirely in the field of Agricultural Sciences. This includes a Post Graduation in Agricultural Sciences and Programme for Agri-Business Management from IIM Ahmedabad. His multi-faceted background makes him capable of handling a variety of roles at Jaipuria Jaipur – from Chairperson, MDP, Training and Consultancy Centre (Executive Education) to Chairperson of the Disciplinary Committee.

“I am happy that the corporate management and the Director of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur entrust me with responsibilities besides teaching. I have also been entrusted with the task of organising the flagship ‘3rd National Workshop on Export –Import and Forex Mechanism’, some time in Nov-Dec 2012. ‘Jaipuria Jaipur Thought Leadership Lecture Series’ is also something that I oversee. These lectures are a great value addition to ‘Brand Jaipuria’ and a real contribution to society. Dr. V. S. Vyas, an eminent economist, and 2nd lecture by Dr. Anil K. Khandelwal, a transformational leader, delivered the inaugural lecture. I was delighted with the encouraging response and the appreciation.”

Professor Garg believes that every single class should be organised with a clear-cut purpose for both student and teacher. That being said, he is also involved in the all-round development of his students at Jaipuria Jaipur.

“Nothing is more delightful to me than alumni of Jaipuria Jaipur seeking my advice and guidance. I often receive emails or calls on aspects of promotion, change of jobs and also on how to handle day-to-day operational problems. It gives me the confidence that my involvement with students is on the right track.”

Nowadays, Professor Garg is fascinated with new learnings in the field of Strategy Management and the latest approaches adopted by organisations. A nature lover, he also uses his spare time visiting religious places and reading turnaround success stories of organiations and leaders. All this helps him motivate his students at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur as well.

Jaipuria Indore STUDENT Speaks

Nishchay Jamwale : The ‘Student who teaches’ at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore.

Nishchay Jamwale is both a student and a teacher at Jaipuria Indore. And before you imagine an earnest young face standing at the head of the class, think again… his teaching consists of a lot more movement!

A native of Maharashtra, Nishchay was born and brought up in Hyderabad. While pursuing his graduation, dance remained his true passion. For the past five years, he has been teaching various forms of Indian and International Dance styles at ‘Twist N Turns Fitness and Dance Studios’ in Hyderabad; in fact, he is one of the founder members of the studio. His gurudakshina to Jaipuria Indore is in the form of Dance workshops for the students as well as the faculty members on campus.

“I dream of the day when I will be a part of a prominent corporate house in a metropolitan city in a managerial position, travelling the world to strike deals during day – and learn the local forms of dance in the evening!”

It certainly sounds like an interesting dream, one that Nishchay began working on even before joining Jaipuria Indore.

“Verbal skills have always been my area of interest. I was involved with the Marketing and HR functions for ‘Twist N Turns’. Even at Genpact, where I worked for 3 years, talking for maximum impact was a full-time job. This is why I decided to specialise in Marketing at Jaipuria Indore. It would help me learn better about marketing concepts so that I could apply them at work. Since I’ve already done some marketing, things are easier to understand and relate to in the classroom at Jaipuria Indore.

Just back from his Summer Internship with East Fx Media and Communications India Pvt. Ltd. at Hyderabad, Nishchay was able to put all the theory of the past one year at Jaipuria Indore into practice.

“I used to think that the corporate world is not as tough as it looks, and all it takes is a little bit of hard work. But this SIP taught me that making it big in the corporate world needs a lot more dedication, zeal, focus, domain knowledge and – most importantly – getting the basics right, than I had ever anticipated.”

Nishchay was involved with a lot of Branding, Marketing and Sales-Pitches for East Fx. In fact, seeing his flair for creativity and musical action he was included in a project to design Live TV shows for ETV TELUGU. On the other hand, he was involved in something as divergent as creating a corporate business presentation for Pragnya Builders, for an upcoming integrated township in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh.

“The most memorable part was being designated a ‘Media Consultant’ by East Fx while I was still just a summer intern. It made me feel that my efforts were being appreciated. My greatest involvement was with an event called the ‘Corporate Bowling League’, which was a tournament designed for the corporates of Hyderabad. For the promotion of the CBL, I had approached nearly 120 corporates for participation and sponsorship. I was also successful in finalising the sponsorship from Harley Davidson for the event.”

Nishchay feels that his SIP wouldn’t have been as successful, had it not been for his faculty mentor from Jaipuria Indore, Professor Romi Sainy.

“Professor Sainy was available at odd hours to answer any query, and always extended her support during my SIP. This is how it has been at Jaipuria Indore throughout. During the first year, everything was new – new campus, new place, new field of study, and a completely new digital education philosophy. But with time we realised how well structured the entire system at Jaipuria Indore is. With the help of the faculty members and their unique teaching methodologies, I find myself far more confident and goal-oriented today.”

Nishchay has been a part of numerous extra-curricular activities at Jaipuria Indore. As a part of the Hospitality team, he has helped organise the National Business Olympiad in association with IIM A, and Encore 2. He was also a part of the 6-member CSR team that raised funds for a child’s operation under My FM’s ‘Ek Rupiya Abhiyan’. Nishchay has contributed and organized several cultural events on campus like “Jaipuria’s Got Talent” and “Milan” which is an annual meet held across all four Jaipuria campuses.

“It is a wonderful experience being a part of the only campus of the Jaipuria Institute of Management group which is 100% residential, with lush green surroundings and modern facilities. We have 24/7 Internet facilities with a mini library in the hostel. What more could an aspiring MBA ask for? Every evening is different here; with Yoga on some days and Dance on others. It’s really a pleasure being a part of Jaipuria Indore.”

Jaipuria Indore STUDENT Speaks

Peer learning is a large part of Jaipuria Indore”, says Anurag Srivastava

When one knows how, it is possible to overcome the toughest challenges. Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore ensures that the students know how to face the selection process of the summer internship projects and bag the most prestigious ones. Anurag Srivastava is specialising in Finance from Jaipuria Indore and he did his SIP with DLF Pramerica Life Insurance Co. He went through the standard placement process – a presentation by the student, followed by a group discussion and then a personal interview. Facing the interview panel was learning and a challenge, but Anurag did well and was selected. He shares, “Prior to the SIP interview, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore conducted several pre-SIP sessions to groom us to the level where it was possible to crack the interview process of a well-known company. These pre-SIP sessions boosted my knowledge level and also gave me a sense of the interpersonal skills that are required in an organisation.”

Anurag received a full-fledged training of 90 hours in Personal Finance, which he believes was his most important learning during the SIP. As he says, “With the awareness of personal finance I can make my own portfolio so that the money earned can be maximised further for future plans.”

Anurag has always had an inclination towards finance. He belongs to Kanpur city and did his graduation with mathematics as his core subject from DAV College, Kanpur. He loves playing chess, cricket and counter-strike games, and is an avid reader of motivational stories.

Moving away from home for studies brought with it the challenges that every young adult faces. He credits his faculty for his success in managing the challenges of the SIP. Their availability and support carried him through the toughest periods of training. He is also all praise for the learning environment provided by Jaipuria Indore when he says, “Peer learning is a large part of Jaipuria Indore, especially for students living in the hostel. We always worked together towards tackling an academic task such as a project, solving case studies, working on a business plan and much more. All this required us to have a quality-oriented approach towards management, and that was possible for me because of the faculty’s constant efforts. They made me realise my leadership potential.”

Jaipuria Indore also provided him with overall development opportunities like the ‘National Business Olympiad’ and ‘Jaipuria’s Got Talent’. “Life at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore is exactly what I expected before joining the institute. I wanted to study in a peaceful, youthful ambience and I got everything I asked for,” concludes a well-satisfied Anurag.
