Industry-student interface is a “must”, says Jaipuria’s Asst. Prof. Vinod Kumar Chib

With 24 years of experience in the corporate world, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow’s Assistant Professor Vinod Kumar Chib believes that industry interface is “a must” for management students. So it’s no wonder that he loves to take students on field trips to various industries, where they get first-hand, face-to-face exposure to the industrial world.

“Almost 80 per cent of boys and 95 per cent of girl students have never been exposed to such big activities and production plants in their lives,” said Asst. Prof. Chib. “They remain mesmerised and claim that this is one of the only and most major of exposures outside the institute campus, where they get to see corporate activities with their own eyes.”

Due to his years of experience as a production and quality control manager with companies such as Britannia Industries Ltd. and later on with the general insurance sector, Asst. Prof. Chib is able to share his own shop-floor knowledge with students and connect industry-related live issues with the course.“Today students have a different perspective towards studies, they are knowledgeable, like to have fun while studying and expect good placements. The best way to ensure their participation in the classroom is by their involvement in discussions. With my industry experience, I engage them with live issues from the corporate sector connected to what is in the course, thus making their participation very interesting.”

To get students involved in these real-life situations, he first outlines the chapter to be covered in class, details its relevance to the course and then takes a current issue or problem facing industry and connects it to the course. This sparks enthusiasm and participation from the students. “They feel proud of sharing their observations on those issues” said Asst. Prof. Chib. “At times, I am amazed by their analytical minds and active participation. In short, I make them realise that they are at the core of the problem and they have to find the solution to the problem. It prompts them to participate actively.”

As part of the operations management faculty, Asst. Prof. Chib is working on a few papers covering topics in operations management and insurance management, as well as working toward his PhD. His responsibilities at Jaipuria, Lucknow also include: Chairperson, Faculty Co-ordinator – Library Activity Committee, Group Co-ordinator Library User Satisfaction Committee ( all four campuses ) and being a member of the Purchase Committee, Student’s Welfare Committee, PGDM Part Time Committee and the National Conference IIC-2012 Promotion Committee. He has little time to spare.

Recalling one of the prouder moments in his life, he said he wrote a joint research paper with his son on a petroleum engineering problem. “My son provided the technical details of the paper and with my engineering background, we prepared the paper and presented it at the International Conference at PDPU, Petroleum University, Ahmedabad. The contents of the paper were well received by the industry doyens, as it was a huge cost-cutting and saving technique for the industry.”

As a result, his son came to the attention of the petroleum sector and he says, “Today, I am the proud father of the first fishing engineer of Indian origin in the world, a sector totally controlled and dominated by foreigners (of non-Indian origin ).”

Jaipuria Jaipur STUDENT Speaks

“Over the years, ‘Jaipuria brand’ has grown considerably. Since i wanted to take admission in a college which is near ajmer, Jaipuria Jaipur proved to be the best option for me.”

Anmol Agarwal, who has joined Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur in the 2012 academic session, hails from the city of Ajmer. Anmol has always been very good at Math, and after finishing his schooling from St. Pauls’, he pursued an Engineering degree in Computer Science from Government Engineering College in Ajmer. After clearing Engineering with a score of 72.5 per cent, Anmol knew that he could make it to a top-notch B-school anywhere in the country. But owing to family matters, he could not go very far from Ajmer. That’s when he heard about Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur.

“Over the years, ‘Jaipuria brand’ has grown considerably. Since I wanted to take admission in a college which is near Ajmer, Jaipuria Jaipur proved to be the best option for me.”

Having been pretty active on the extra-curricular front, Anmol has really come into his own in Jaipuria, Jaipur.

“My hobbies include playing football and table tennis, and I love hanging out with friends. Jaipuria, Jaipur has helped me channelise my strengths right from Day 1. During the induction programme, some sessions were really good and very interactive. So far, I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of a skit, Ad mania – the Ad competition, various sports and have even been one of the anchors at the recently held International Conference at Jaipuria, Jaipur.”

Anmol finds the faculty at Jaipuria Jaipur extremely knowledgeable, and with just the right mix of industry and academic orientation.

“It really feels great when teachers appreciate my work – Professor Lokesh Vijayvargy especially, because he trusts me a lot. Since Professor Vijayvargy is also from an Engineering background, he understands the kinds of challenges that engineering students face in adjusting to Management classes. Professor Shailesh Rastogi is also a wonderful teacher. His style of teaching is a bit different, but sometimes it works wonders. Of course, Professor Rastogi teaches Finance, and that is why he uses varied techniques to simplify the complicated topics. We’ve had some sessions with Professor S. P. Garg on Inquest, and his way of teaching is very corporate and democratic.”

Anmol says that his only expectation from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur is for it to give him his deserved shot in life. On completing his management education, he would like to be a part of an organisation that can take his practical learning even further. According to him, that is something that will hold him in good stead in the long run.

“I came from the retail industry, not only did Jaipuria Noida prepare me for a much bigger role, but it also ensured that I was ready for the finance and banking industry.”

Prashant Sharma passed out with the latest batch of managers (2012 batch) from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida and has now been placed with Indian Bank as an Assistant Manager. A product of TAFS (The Air Force School), Subroto Park, Prashant completed his BBA from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 2009, but instead of going for his MBA immediately, he decided to get some work experience.

“After my graduation, I worked in store operations with Jumbo Electronics at their outlet in the GIP (Great India Place) Mall, Noida. My role was on the floor, and required round-the-clock interaction with customers. This experience turned me into an extrovert in my professional life. I became quite comfortable about dealing with people from different strata of society.”

After gathering this valuable 13-month work experience, Prashant decided it was time to go for an MBA and take his career to the next level. After carefully going through all his options, he zeroed in on Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida.

“Those were the two most enjoyable years of my life. We worked hard, but partied even harder. In fact, I still remember the subgradation for not having made an 80% attendance. The most enjoyable part was preparing presentations with a group, and regular outings to Shipra Mall. I’m still in touch on Facebook with all my friends.”

Prashant finds his new station in life, as an Assistant Manager in Indian Bank, exciting and challenging. Four months into his job, he is seeing a huge learning curve in understanding different avenues of the banking industry in the effective execution of his tasks. From talking to Prashant, it is evident that his sense of gratitude to Jaipuria Noida cannot be explained in words.

“I came from the Retail industry. Not only did Jaipuria Noida prepare me for a much bigger role, but it also ensured that I was completely ready for the Finance and Banking Industry. More importantly, it gave me the necessary discipline and attitude to make this transition smooth. As a part of the Banking Industry, I deal with a very different group of people, whose needs are financial in nature.”

Prashant feels that Jaipuria Institute of Management’s greatest strength is its ability to make its students competitive. He recalls the numerous occassions on which he was pitted against strong opponents, especially at the NEN (National Entrepreneurship Network) competition.

“The NEN competitions are challenging, and it is a test of creativity, intelligence, out-of-the-box thinking, teamwork, leadership qualities and a burning desire to win. There are more than 200 events over seven days, and the panel of NEN officials judges every college. Events are as per the themeand require the involvement of the Host College, external participants and sponsors. We beat teams from BIMTEC, IIT Delhi, Amity University, Delhi University and the Asia Pacific Institute to become the national champions. Me and my team members – Abhijit, Mitali, Roli, Jaspreet and Vikram – are all recognised as Entrepreneurship Leaders by NEN.”

Prashant is positive that within the next five years he will be able to grow to the level of a Branch Manager at Indian Bank. He firmly believes that Jaipuria Institute of Management has given him all the skills he needs to climb to great heights.
