Engaging with industry experts to look into the future of the Automobile industry

As a part of its formidable industry immersion culture, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore invited one of Indore’s most prominent businessmen of the Automobile sector. Mr. Ashutosh Mishra, President of Sanghi Motors, visited Jaipuria Indore on the 2nd of February 2013, for an interaction with the students. Mr. Mishra is one of the most respected names in the automobile consumer dealership space, having held prominent positions with companies like Hyundai, Maruti and, as of now, with Tata Motors. In his interaction with the students of Jaipuria Indore, Mr. Mishra provided a detailed overview of the automobile industry in India.

“Automobiles set our pulse racing; they attract a lot of young minds. The history of the Indian automobile industry dates back to 1897 and today, India is the ninth largest automobile industry in the world. And guess what? The low levels of vehicle penetration in India still provide immense opportunities in our automobile industry, making it one of the top three lucrative markets in the world for automobile giants. Companies like Nissan and General Motors have created blueprints for the export of 5 Lakh cars that will be manufactured in India, with an expected investment of over 30,000 crores.”

During the hour-long interaction, Mr. Mishra classified the automobile industry into various segments, and shared some important features about the marketing of automobiles, including pricing as the major contributor to branding and sales.

“Innovation might be new to most sectors, but not automobiles. Ever since it began, automobile companies have either grown big or perished, depending on their innovation quotient. The health of the commercial vehicle sector is an indicator of the health of the economy of a country. Apart from the Asian economies, sales in the automobile industry across the globe have stagnated. The major threat in the automobile industry is the global crisis, and that is why Asia is quickly turning into a battle-ground for automobile giants.”

Mr. Ashutosh Mishra dwelt in great detail on the growth drivers of the automobile industry, such as the development of navigable infrastructure (roads and highways), the critical factor of growth in the middle-class segment of an economy, increased investments by global players, and vehicle and components export.

“Can you believe where the next big thrust of car manufacturers in India is? Maruti Udyog is going ahead full throttle with a 6500 crore investment in the second-hand car segment, Hyundai is pumping in more than 3800 crores and Tata motors is investing 2000 crores in the small car segment. While passenger car markets will always have growth potential, the commercial vehicle segment has also shown great recovery, especially in India, after withstanding the effects of the global financial crisis.”

He advised the management students of Jaipuria Indore to continuously gauge the technological environment of the automobile industry.

“Opportunities for the automobile industry lie in tapping into the ever growing consumer demands and, undoubtedly, alternate fuel sources.Trends like fuel efficient cars, NVH isolation, lower CO2 emissions and the growth of a niche market in tier-2 cities hold a lot of promise in the future. The weakness in the industry is not about the buying power, but revolves majorly around the lack of proper infrastructure and not much improvement in the after-sales services.”

Mr. Ashutosh Mishra’s interaction was rich in cases and examples. In fact, he even concluded his session with a small caselet on the Tata Nano, leading to an energetic discussion among students on how it could be converted into a success.

Jaipuria Indore hosts blood donation camp on campus

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore organised a blood donation camp in association with the M Y Hospital on its campus at Dakachya, Indore on January 30th , 2013. The event saw the entire institute turn up as blood donors, including students, staff, faculty, spouses and friends. M Y Hospital will use the collected blood for children with Thalassemia, who need regular blood transfusions.

Addressing the gathering, the Director of the Institute, Dr. J. P. Upadhyay, said, “Blood donation is the greatest of all donations, as it saves the lives of people”. Encouraging the younger generation to donate blood, he continued, “It is the right time to give blood, as you’re young and every contribution you make augurs well for the future of our nation”. He lauded the coordinators for the camp, Prof. Pooja Kushwaha, Mr. Gautam Pandey and Mr. Rahul Bairagi, for creating this opportunity for every donor.

There were several first-time donors like Ankit Chaurasia, PGDM Class of 2014, who shared his experience saying, “I was initially a bit skeptical about donating blood. But seeing the response of my fellow students, I realised this was my best chance to start contributing to a larger cause and I made up my mind to donate. I feel really proud of myself and will be a regular blood donor.” There were regular donors in the student body who encouraged the first-timers. Vasundhara Bharadwaj, PGDM Class of 2013, said, “I’ve been donating blood since my junior college days. It’s healthy, fun and most of all, makes you feel very good. It’s just a needle prick, and after that, it’s all simple”.

Citing the statistics about the need for blood in India, the doctors from M Y Hospital said, “There is need for ten million units of blood, whereas we have only five million units. Every drop counts.”

Dr. Upadhyay closed the camp by saying, “We thank our donors for their participation and will continue to associate ourselves with such initiatives in the near future. This is in extension to our CSR initiative for the nearby villages, Ugam and Dayitva. Perhaps the next camp will include the nearby villages and we can incorporate further health tips for the villagers as well. This is just the start; we hope to do better for society and our students, always.”

Jaipuria Noida STUDENT Speaks

Mr. Anurag Sharma, deputy general manager of Reebok, shares tips on the retail sector with students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida

In its constant attempts to align its students to emerging industries, Jaipuria Noida recently brought in one of the most widely experienced professionals of the Retail industry, Mr. Anurag Sharma, to interact with its students. Mr. Sharma, who is currently Deputy General Manager with Reebok (India), which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the $4 billion Reebok International – has more than 13 years of experience in the Retail industry. With a series of case studies based on his experiences, Mr. Anurag Sharma elaborated on what innovations mean in the retail industry.

“I’ve been with Reebok for nearly 11 years now, starting out as an Assistant Product Manager for Greg Norman (Golfing Brand), moving onto Product Manager for Rockport, and finally ending up with my current profile. I can assure you that with the kind of competition that we’ve seen in these times, we would not have survived had we not innovated. Even merging into the Adidas Group was a sort of commercial innovation, in keeping with the times.”

A product of National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, Mr. Sharma emphasised that the current era of uncertainty is basically an opportunity for management graduates, like his audience at Jaipuria Noida, to look deep within themselves and follow their hearts.

“After passing out of NIFT in 1998, I started out with ITC, shifting within a year to Arvind Brands, handling Operations for the denim brand, Lee. Right through school in Lucknow and college as well, I’ve always been an athlete. This is why I was looking out for an opportunity to work with a fitness brand, which happened in 2001 in the form of Reebok.”

Given his fit and toned physique, nobody at Jaipuria Noida was surprised when he told them that he was a regular at the Reebok gym, and has run the Delhi Half Marathon fives times in a row.

“It is nice to see budding young retailers at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, full of enthusiasm and inquisitive about the nuances of retail. With the FDI in single brand retail opening up, new players will very quickly be entering the Indian space. The laws are not very strict or defined in this sector as yet, so you will have to choose your best bet after a lot of study. Stay focused and keep the big picture in mind while you work towards your dream. And please read retail journals regularly; because if you miss, somebody else will hit! You always need to be on your toes to constantly deliver.”

Having travelled extensively across the U.S., Europe and the Far East, Mr. Anurag Sharma brought a much-needed global perspective on the Retail industry to his address to the students of Jaipuria Noida.

“Retail was at a nascent stage in India in the late nineties, but those of us who were well clued in on the Indian and global fronts, knew very well that it had a long positive road ahead. As management students, you should be able to read the opportunities that markets provide you, especially the ones that are yet to boom. ‘Get in early, and grow quickly’ – that should be your mantra.”

The interaction with Mr. Anurag Sharma, DGM, Reebok (India), is part of the sustained industry immersion programme that management students of Jaipuria Noida are exposed to round the year.
