Jaipuria is the best Launch-pad for a student aiming to have a life in Entrepreneurship

Piyush Kumar is living his dream – he owns a garment manufacturing and export business, which he named ‘Magic Asia’. Piyush, a Jaipuria Institute of Management alumni and member of PGDM batch 2006-08, always had his sights set on achieving his entrepreneurial goals: “I always had this dream that I have to do something of my own. However, I began my career with Blue Star Air-conditioning through a campus placement. I was a fresh graduate, and I learned a lot from my seniors. After that, I moved to Panasonic and grew to the position of Area Manager. Armed with this experience, I decided to set up my own business”.

Piyush appreciates the need for a good institute, a program with a lot of opportunity and accomplished faculty; however, he believes success actually lies in the hands of the aspirant. He likens the process to being provided with a launch-pad. After the initial thrust, the rocket, he says, has to travel the trajectory on its own. “I think an MBA is a necessity today; but the fact is that one needs to have a degree from a good college, supported by good faculty,” he tells us. “More importantly, however, is the desire to learn, which comes from within and helps a person succeed. I believe that to move up to the next level, you need to have a thrust within.”

Piyush believes that it’s easy for students to forget that learning is actually what a student does and experiences through work rather than theory alone.“Assignments and projects are the best way to learn during a program like PGDM,” he says. “I still remember my Summer Internship Project where we were asked to make a presentation on what we learned after completing the SIP. It has stayed with me, and I believe it was one of the most important takeaways from my time at the institute.” College life, Piyush says, gave him opportunities to explore his own potential. For instance, he never thought he had the capability to organize a SPIC MACAY event in Jaipuria. “It was the first such event at the institute and I was surprised to be assigned to it,” he says. “I coordinated the entire process and learned a lot from it”. Piyush describes his journey so far as an exciting roller coaster ride that, to say the least, has been fantastic. This roller coaster ride has landed him at the pinnacle of his career as an entrepreneur. And, students and alumni alike could learn a lot from his experiences and advice.

During the Oil & Gas Conservation Fortnight, held between 16 and 31st Jan by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) Indore (LPG bottling) plant, students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore had an opportunity to visit the HPCL plant. The purpose was obvious- students were to be educated on how huge plants function. This perfectly timed visit accomplished just that.

The purpose of the fortnight long celebration is to spread awareness about the conservation of Oil and Gas. Mr. Ravi Bhushan Bhattacharya, Senior Plant Manager, took things further by discussing alternative practices employed by HPCL and its diversified activities to deal with limited resources. He then focussed on LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) properties, usage, and how we can conserve Oil and Gas so that our future generations don’t suffer.

Mr. Anand then took the students around the plant, which is semi-automatic, equipped with flame proof machineries and other fire safety mechanisms. The company spends a total of 55% of total revenue on safety measures, as inflammable materials are involved at every step of the process. During the tour, all aspects of the plant’s activities were explained by Mr. Bhattacharya – from plant safety to the wide range of operations and processes. Finally, he talked about the PAHAL Scheme introduced by the Government, which is being implemented in metro regions. He went through its list of benefits, and how this new initiative affects the lives of locals and energy production of the future.

Students were not only excited to see LPG cylinders being filled at the designated station, but they were also eager to hear that there are several exciting opportunities for them in the field of energy management. As his parting shot, Mr. Bhattacharya asked students, “To realize the practical learning from this industry visit and make the most out of it. I myself have felt invigorated in the company of students so willing to learn.” This surely was a learning experience – students returned from the plant with an insight into its functioning and operations.

Jaipuria alumnus Mr. Divya Mehra, VP, Service (IG), Controls & Audits, Religare stresses on the importance of practical learning for today’s managers

“My journey with Jaipuria Institute of Management has been great because of all the amazing things I have learned there. Both the theoretical and practical learning that I got from the institute has led me to the place in my career where I am today.” These are the words of Mr. Divya Mehra of the 2003 batch, and the place he is talking about is that of Vice-President, Customer Service (IG), Controls & Audits, Religare. We talked to him about his academic years, the role of the institute in his grooming as a professional and the challenges he faces in his work sphere.

As the VP of a top brand, Mr. Mehra is in a position of huge responsibility; this is a challenge in itself, but it’s something he thrives on. The Marketing and Finance major from the institute today handles controls, audits and inspections at Religare. Talking about his work tasks, he says, “One big challenge is stress because it’s everywhere. It could be because you have to interact with people that you might not gel with, or deal with deadlines. It’s not the stress but how you choose to deal with it that proves your mettle.”

Mr. Mehra is candid in his admission that it was his education at his B school that prepared him for the road ahead in his career. He re-iterates the fact that he has been able to implement whatever he learned at the institute in his professional life. This is something he feels has given him the opportunity to go far in life: “One big take away from my time at the institute was that whatever situation you are faced with, you cannot shy away from it. If you are willing to face it head on, there’s every chance that you will be able to sail through it,” he says practically.

Of course, Mr. Mehra’s experience and overall personality was also moulded by cultural activities that his institute promoted. He talks about the importance of such initiatives, saying, “Besides the curriculum and classroom learning, I benefited from being a part of the cultural activities. I was the culture secretary and started a cultural committee that hosted several events; I also was able to meet new people from various colleges. It has given me so many beautiful memories, in addition to an experience of a lifetime.”

After going through the B School and management degree route himself, does Mr. Mehra think it’s a requisite for those who want to make it in the corporate world? He has seen the industry closely today and is that something employers look from new candidates? “While it’s not a necessity it can certainly take you to the next level,” he says. “I count myself lucky to have done my PGDM from a renowned institute that created an ideal launch pad for me.”
