Supply Chain professionals have great job opportunities waiting for them. Explore with President’s Award Winner Prof. Prashant Gupta of Jaipuria, Jaipur how and why?

“One of the most important skills we try and instill in management students is Time Management,” says Prof. Prashant Gupta, Area Chair & Professor, Operations Management & Strategy at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur. That’s something the award winning Professor and author has done himself in his career spanning over four decades in both industry and academia. We talked to him about his experience and expertise in the field and tried to get into the mind of the Perfectionist.

The President’s Award winner has also bagged the Best Professor in Operations Management’ in Asia’s Best B-School Awards, by CMO, Asia in 2011. Prof. Gupta has tried to achieve perfection in everything he has done in his career but remains modest when he says, “It was something I was taught early in my life by my teachers. My industry career was with companies that produced defense equipment and precision products like watches. It was a combination of organizational requirement and self-motivation that guided me.”

He has brought the same approach to management education where he has worked with renowned B Schools that required continuous updation of knowledge, and excellence in contents and delivery. He elaborates on his stream of expertise and teaching practices. “Operations and Strategy areas are dynamic in both content and practice, which requires frequent changes to the course. I start every session with News of the Day to relate it to concepts, use case studies, discussions and projects that require industry inputs to keep things relevant,” he explains.

Prof. Gupta also talks about the constantly evolving world of Supply Chain Management and the opportunities it offers to new graduates. “Today competition is not just between organizations, but supply chains as well. Globalization, shortening product life cycles, proliferation in variety of products, and customization are putting great pressure on organizations to manage their supply chains effectively. That has led to an increase in employment potential in the field with FMCG, Healthcare, Manufacturing, Quick Service Restaurants and other sectors,” he says.

According to Prof. Gupta some of the job profiles in the field that management professionals can aim for include Operations or Manufacturing Manager, Logistics Manager, Warehouse Manager, Production Planning Manager. He also mentions the consulting roles with companies like IBM, Accenture, Infosys, HCL and TCS. “The opportunities will grow in the coming years. You have to know that engineering background is desirable but not necessary. Having basic knowledge of Operations and Marketing management, ERP and business analytics is helpful,” he suggests.

And how does Jaipuria Institute of Management prepare its students to meet the demands of the industry? For Prof. Gupta it begins with revising the syllabus every year with industry, academician, alumni, faculty and student inputs, but goes way beyond that. “We focus on regular industry interaction through guest lectures, seminars, conclaves, field projects and corporate visits. There is emphasis on discussion on current cases, research papers, videos of lectures to be reviewed by students, experiential learning through time spent at retail outlets and industry internships,” he draws out a map of strategies that groom successful professionals of tomorrow.

Today as she is about to set off on her journey as a professional she traces her steps back to the personal and career transforming two years of her life.

How it all began?

A BCA graduate, Madhurima knew that she had to up her game to make it into the corporate world. Jaipuria, Lucknow’s reputation reached her through her seniors and she decided to take the plunge. “I could see myself fit into a few roles after I completed by PGDM – FS. I was particularly interested in finance research and marketing, and the institute groomed me. I have to say the last two years have been life changing,” she says thoughtfully.

Industry-focused training does the trick

According to Madhurima, one of the major highlights of studying at the institute is that it emphasizes on giving students a peek into the corporate world. She mentions industry expert sessions, visits, and of course the SIP to make her point. “I did my SIP with First Call India Equity Advisors and it was such a huge learning experience for me. I had to do equity research of 10 FMCG companies, which I thrived on,” she adds confidently.

Placement preparation

Madhurima shows immense gratitude towards her institute and its placement cell for helping her with every aspect of placement. She recounts the special placement prep as she says, “We were encouraged to read Economic times. Right from public speaking skills to body language; everything was taught. I think my placement interview was quite stressful, but I stayed calm through it. The composure and clarity was because of the preparation I had.”

Life as a Professional

While Madhurima admits that she has found her dream placement, she quickly adds that being able to enhance her skills at the institute meant the world to her. And now she steps out into the real corporate world filled with confidence. “I will be working as a Compliance Officer (risk) with the company. Nitin Joshi, Jaipuria, Noida alum on driving his career through different industries to a senior position with Avis

“My fundamentals of business management were shaped at Jaipuria, Noida. The basics of Marketing and Business always remain the same; they just morph into different forms with time,” says Nitin Joshi, alum, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida and now Senior Manager, Marketing – Avis. The institute allowed him to explore and express himself exactly the way he wanted. And that to him is one of the main reasons he has managed to chalk out his own path in the corporate world.

The Non-conformist

In his career that started with Bennett Coleman, Nitin has explored different industry sectors and worked with names like India Mart, Kingdom of Dreams, Myles Cars and now Avis. He admits that switching industries and brands might not send out the right signals to recruiters, but he doesn’t conform to such notions. “I have been fortunate to work with some of the leading brands in their respective industries. It helped me broaden my horizons on the subject as dynamics differ,” he states.

Mantras for future managers

B School graduates enter the corporate world with dreams in their eyes and the drive to prove themselves. Nitin, a seasoned professional has practical advice for them. “Forget your inhibitions and avoid being judgmental or building stereotypes about peers and work,” he says.

Talking about his own learning experiences as a professional he adds, “Read, write, recite and repeat the topics of your interest. Cross functionality networking within an organization helps. Importantly, hold an opinion on things that matter to you.”

Marketing – then and now

As an experienced marketing professional, Nitin is well placed to throw light on the changes in the field and the impact of Social Media, digital marketing today. “Digital marketing is to brands what stand-up comedy is to comedians; you get instant feedback. Traditional media has its advantages and the two can complement each other if used smartly,” is his take on the matter.

Nitin believed that this was the field he would excel in and his hunch turned out to be right. Today his biggest reward as a professional is to be able to do what he loves.

Almost a decade since Jaipuria

Nitin is a student of the 2007 batch at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida and recounts debates, presentations, sports, interaction with Industry mavericks as his confidence builders. His time at the institute has been instrumental in his journey. “It’s a great place to build a strong foundation as a management professional. It has grown manifold in the past years and is moving in the right direction,” he ends on a note that fits perfectly with his own career graph too.

If you got an aim in mind, start from Day one to prepare for it

“If you got an aim in mind, start from Day one to prepare for it,” says Jaya Singh from the 2014-16 batch of Jaipuria, Jaipur, currently working with Vodafone

Jaya has joined Vodafone India as an ET with a salary package of Rs. 4.3lacs p.a. She shares her Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur’s experience and how it has helped her reach where she is today.

B.Com and then PGDM. Was it an obvious choice?

Not really. For me it was a desire and an unquenched thirst for knowledge that made me consider PGDM in the first place. I come from the City of Nawabs, Lucknow where I did my B.Com (Hons.) from Lucknow University. Even before finishing my UG, I knew I had to learn more. It was this very desire to learn management skills and have a good stepping stone for my career brought me to closer to Jaipuria Institute of Management’s PGDM. I did my research around B-schools but something just clicked naturally with Jaipuria, Jaipur and I didn’t have to look back since then.

Was joining Jaipuria Institute of Management, a decision worth the dimes?

Every penny worth the dime spent.
I have seen a huge change in my abilities and personality. I am more confident now as a person. My presentation skill has improved immensely. My communication skill has gone better by leaps and bounds. Plus, when I see my batch mates from Lucknow University who did not pursue the PGDM or similar post-grad studies, they are struggling in jobs that do not help them better themselves.

These two years have given me many memorable experiences- including a wonderful trip to Manali with my batch mates, the celebrations after the placements, my 1st position in Kho-Kho, Cricket at National Level Sports Meet held at the Institute and the 1st position in Dance Competition in ABHYUDAYA Jaipuria, Jaipur, my internship with Genpact, to name a few. To top it all I made great friends.

How is working with Vodafone coming along?

At Vodafone, my key responsibilities include managing Distributors and DSEs, visiting the retailers and generally managing sales and distribution. I feel my 2 years of Management studies have prepared me well for these responsibilities.

From where it all started:

I come from the beautiful state of Assam. I was born and rasied in Guwahati and completed my school from Gurukul Grammar Senior Sec School. I have done my under-graduation from Guwahati University and then decided to opt for a higher management course.

Even after all options, why choose Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow?

I reserahced and looked into all the options I had at hand to pursue my higher Management education from. However, Jaipuria Institute of Management any day stood out from the rest. The reason I joined Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow was to explore and enhance the self-management skills that are needed in the corporate world. The journey traversed so far with the B-school:

My Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow’s journey has been dotted with wonderful experiences. A lot of credit definitely goes to the excellent teaching, the interactive sessions with the wonderful faculty, practical approach towards learning that Jaipuria Institute of Management advocates, and the endless scopes of self-evaluation and improvement provided at every bend and turn here.

Where next?

I will be joining Deloitte as a U.S Tax Consultant. I am mentally and physically ready to take on the role. The academic experience here at Jaipuria, Lucknow has helped me a lot in terms of developing a promising personality, learning effective communication skills, helping me understand core areas in terms of career goal, and learn professionalism and organizational ethics. These are the reasons why a reputable PGDM course is essential in today’s world. I am also confident that this will take me towards my long-term goal of managing a larger team in a powerful, decision-making role.

What worked for you during the interview with Deloitte?

You mean what went right in the interview for me? Well I was myself and I maintained my formal, professional best. I was thorough with my Summer Internship project and summary and I did spend a lot of time to research on the company background and understand the profile on offer, better.

Any advice to juniors?

In terms of my advice to juniors, I would say- be truthful to what you learn, make the most of the wonderful faculty around you, and enhance your personality each day because I feel an appealing personality with the right kind of attitude can take you the other side of the table easy. Confidence and a pleasing attitude can take you very far.

How true is it that without quality there’s only so much branding can do for organizations?

We asked Dr. Poonam Sharma, Professor- Marketing, Jaipuria Institute of Management

With over two decades of work experience in Marketing and Branding, Dr. Poonam Sharma, Professor – Marketing at Jaipuria, Noida is a definite expert in the field. Her deep insight into the subject is expressed when she says, “Transforming a brand into a socially responsible leader doesn’t happen overnight by simply writing new marketing and advertising strategies. The company must learn how to engage its consumers with authenticity and transparency.” And she applies similar mantra to classroom interactions, taking her point across effectively to students.

Loved by them as a mentor and a friend, Dr. Sharma has devised unique strategies to keep things lively and engaging in the classroom. She lets us in on the secret of successful classroom environment. “I try to use examples, videos; break the monotony in the classroom and encourage students to interact. You have to realize that students don’t have long attention spans, but they participate in discussions and are involved. It helps them understand the concepts better. Learning in classroom can actually be a lot of fun too,” she says with a smile.

Dr. Sharma has worked with several big names in the industry and academia, including international universities. She brings this experience to the table for her students to learn and grow from. She also keeps them abreast with the latest in the field, which is constantly evolving. “Communication and responsible brand behavior of companies will make consumers believe that the organization is not just about profits but is also for larger interests of society. Only a sustained effort will win brand credibility with customers, and all other stake holders,” she states.

However, according to Dr. Sharma, without quality there’s only so much branding can do for organizations. She cites the examples of brands like Apple, Ferrari, Toyota, etc while saying, “They have managed to build credibility over the years on the back of the quality they offer. But at the same time, all good stories need to be told, which is why branding has to be strong.” She is trying to tell some too, through her research, after having already published 18 case studies and papers. She is presently working on “Responsible Branding: That’s The Tom’s Mission”.

Ask her about major differences she sees in academic culture in India and abroad, given her own experiences with foreign universities and she says thoughtfully, “Collaborative approach is big in the West; they set up expectations and tie up with the corporate. The onus of learning there is completely on students and focus is on practical exposure. Things are changing in India as well, and we are slowly getting to that level.” With her approach to education and learning, Dr. Sharma is definitely playing her part.
