Mastering in Quantitative Ability: Tips & Practice for CAT

Know All About Common Aptitude Test (CAT)

Common Admission Test, commonly known as CAT is a Management Based Entrance Exam, conducted by the Indian Institute of Management each year, to get an admit in the Management Programs from top B-Schools in India. The test is designed by the prestigious IIMs on a rotational basis each year. It is considered to be one of the most competitive entrance examinations in India, where over 2 Lakh students appear for the test each year.

QUANTITATIVE ABILITY

The third and final section of the CAT Examination is Quantitative Ability. As compared to the previous two sections, Quants is one section, where there is always a surety of being able to attempt questions with better accuracy. The difficulty level of this section is also certainly not very easy, but the approach toward each and every question is pretty straightforward. Each and every question in the Quants section is based on the concepts of topics covered in the Section.

Some common topics covered in Quantitative Ability are

  • Arithmetic- Fractions, Percentages, Profit and Loss, Time and Work, Time Speed and Distance, Ratio and Proportions, Averages
  • Number Systems- Integers, Factors and Multiples, Divisibility, HCF and LCM, Remainders
  • Algebra- Equations, Inequalities, Surds and Indices, Logs, Progressions, Functions
  • Geometry- Lines, angles, triangles, circles, quadrilaterals, polygons, areas, volumes, and coordinate geometry.
  • Mensuration- Measuring geometric figures, such as areas and volumes of 2D and 3D shapes, are covered in this category.
  • Modern Mathematics- Probability, permutation, and combination, set theory, and basic concepts of statistics.
  • Trigonometry- Concepts of trigonometric ratios, trigonometric identities, and solving trigonometric equations may be part of this section.
  • Number Theory- Properties of integers, divisibility, factorials, remainders, etc.

The questions asked in this section are generally straightforward, you just have to understand and interpret the question properly to be able to understand the problem and solve it accordingly.

We will divide the preparation again into 3 Phases – Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced

BEGINNER

We start off from the basics. This will include revising the above-mentioned topics from NCERT Math Books from Class 6th to 10th. CAT Does not include questions from higher Math like Calculus. Go through the topics in your textbooks and solve the Examples to get a grip on the formulas and concepts.

Also, some basic calculations like-

  • Learn Tables from 1-20
  • Learn Squares from 1-30
  • Learn Cubes from 1-15
  • Learn Reciprocals from 1-30 (i.e. 1/1, ½, 1/3…..1/30)

To complete the Beginner phase, it should not take you more than 15 Days at max.

INTERMEDIATE

During the Intermediate Phase, we shift our focus to the Study Material for Quantitative Ability and start solving the material topic by topic. During the Intermediate phase, we will also start taking Topic-Wise and Section-Wise tests as we progress through the syllabus. The Intermediate phase for QA should not take more than 2 Months at max.

ADVANCED

In the advanced stage, we are now going to focus only on testing and analysis, attempting only Tests in this stage. It is again very crucial to understand that Analysis is just as important. Analysing tests will act as Automatic Revision for you and you will not have to allocate time separately to revise whatever you have studied.

CAT Test Pattern

CAT is a Computer Based Aptitude Test. The test contains questions of two types- MCQs and Non-MCQs.

As per CAT 2022, the format of the test is as follows-

  • Mode- Computer-Based Test, Online
  • Test Fee- INR 1200/- for SC, ST, PWD and INR 2400/- for Other Students
  • Each year, one IIM is nominated to Conduct the entire Application and Testing Process
  • Total Questions- 66
  • Question Format- MCQ (70%-75%) and Non-MCQ (25-30%) or TITA (Type in The Answer) Questions
  • Total Duration- 120 Minutes (40 Minutes Per Each Section)
  • Sections-

Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension- 24 Questions, 40 Minutes

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning- 20 Questions, 40 Minutes

Quantitative Ability- 22 Questions, 40 Minutes

  • Marking Scheme (+3) For Correct Answer, (-1) for Incorrect Answer. Negative Marking is applicable only on MCQ Based Questions. Non-MCQ or TITA Questions do not carry any negative marking.
  • The score is released in Percentile (%ile) and not marks. Percentile is basically a rank. Percentile states how many students are below oneself. For Example- If I score a 90%ile, it means that there are 90% of students below me in the test, or out of 100, my rank was 10, meaning I am above 90 students.

The Management Graduate Mindset

After all the hardships of going through a tough selection process, and getting into one of the most coveted management schools, you are now ready for the next phase of your life. We understand if you are nervous and excited at the same time. Many of our alumni felt the same way. We’ve found that a segment of our students makes an early mark in their PGDM journey with us. And it surely is a good idea to prepare further and get a head start on your PGDM program at Jaipuria Institute of Management.

So here are five tips that can make you the early bird at B-school

Tip 1: Make an early start

For some of you, this could be a return to academia from the workplace. While we appreciate the thought behind gaining work experience before attending PGDM, it is equally important to brush up on skills lying dormant like quantitative aptitude and the ability to take notes.

We encourage our students to have pre-PGDM reads (we already have our course pedagogy available), as it would give you a head start if you could glance over the syllabus and the books. It would be beneficial to crack your first semester.

You are joining the program with a lot of knowledge and experience. Don’t let them get in your way of acquiring new knowledge. Learning to unlearn is essential as it helps you grasp new concepts and solve business case studies much better.

Tip 2: Build relationships and make friends

At Jaipuria, we encourage building relationships and growing together. Mentor-mentee, batchmates, roommates, friends, and so on, we wouldn’t like to put a tag on the connections. The more, the merrier. Use the days at the school to network, and just don’t bury yourself in books. Participate in the symposiums and conclaves and make genuine efforts to widen your circle.

Many assignments will involve group work, like, let-it projects, market research, surveys, Business Orientation Programme (BOP), or even your summer internship project reports. It’s fun to do them in groups. Speak with students from previous years and your professors, as you never know who could become a future business partner, advisor, or even a lifelong buddy.

Tip 3: Make the most out of your management graduate status

Pursuing a PGDM program allows you to ask questions, so go ahead and use that card at every opportunity. With market research exercises, you can get interviews, collect data, attend workshops & conferences, and open up opportunities to connect with the founders of organizations. Use the student tag to explore new frontiers, meet business leaders and identify which stream you want to soak yourself in.

Tip 4: Keep Pursuing your Interests, Inside and Outside the Program

A lot will be going on in your PGDM program: assignments, case studies, symposiums, clubs, and so on. We encourage our students to participate in academics to the fullest while exploring and pursuing their latent abilities.

Maintaining your interests and hobbies can help you cope with the academic pressure while bolstering your sense of self as you progress through the program. Also, doing anything unrelated to the PGDM program might help you clear your thoughts and adequately understand the program’s issues.

Tip 5: Make learning fun

Finally, it’s not only about studying. Mix it up from the first day: take a break from reading and listen to some of the finest podcasts for management students; attend lectures, seminars, and workshops; watch TEDx talks and use online learning aids. Explore as many different learning streams as possible so that you may arm yourself with information from a variety of sources.

All these activities will result in you gathering a wealth of information in your arsenal and make you more adaptable to different situations. The knowledge and experience will come in handy during the placement season, making you a wholesome management hire.

To new beginnings

Allow yourself to unwind! Take a week off before the commencement of the program and retrospect on the purpose of joining the PDGM program. Don’t pressure yourself to excel at all the clubs and events, prioritise what you want and also balance a vibrant social life and go by your strength.

Also, at Jaipuria Institute of Management, we ask all our students to focus and work on their mental and physical well-being. We look forward to welcoming you to our campus and are excited to watch the transformation of future business leaders.

Crack Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) for CAT 2023 Exam

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is an annual management entrance examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM). It serves as the gateway to prestigious management programs at top B-Schools across India. Desgned by the esteemed IIMs on a rotating basis, CAT is renowned as one of India’s most fiercely competitive entrance exams, attracting over 2 lakh aspirants each year.

Total of 20 Questions in 40 Minutes

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), in the past few years, has been one of the most challenging Sections of the CAT examination for most of the students. The difficulty level for this section particularly has been quite unpredictable.

TIPS TO CRACK DATA INTERPRETATION AND LOGICAL REASONING (DILR)

Some common topics covered in this section are-

  • Tables
  • Graphs (Bar, Column, Pie Charts, Line Charts)
  • Number and Letter Series
  • Caselets
  • Cubes
  • Venn Diagrams
  • Clocks and Calendars
  • Logical Sequencing
  • Syllogism
  • Binary Logic
  • Blood Relation
  • Linear, Vertical, and Circular Arrangement

PREPARATION FOR DATA INTERPRETATION AND LOGICAL REASONING (DILR)

The preparation strategy for DILR however, is a little different from what we do in VARC and QA.

The questions in the actual exam in the past few years have been hardly direct, requiring the students to apply multiple concepts and interpretations to be able to solve the question sets correctly.

To master this section, there is only one solution and only one strategy- PRACTICE.

CAT Examination has not followed any set pattern like VARC or QA in DILR in terms of the composition and break-up of the questions on the basis of the topics included.

The section will carry 4 Sets with 4 to 6 Questions for each set.

It is suggestable that we thoroughly complete the basics of each topic covered under the DILR Umbrella in the span of 2 Months. Post which, we start taking Section Wise tests in both the Intermediate stage and Advanced phase of preparation moving on to Topic-Wise and Section-Wise Mock Tests with gradually increasing difficulty levels.

Again, testing is important, but so is the analysis of each and every test, laying focus on the incorrect questions and unattempt questions.

Post the completion of the Basic Phase, the Intermediate and Advanced phase needs to be followed religiously till the day before your Actual Exam.

Becoming the Perfect Candidate for your ‘Dream Job’

Becoming the Perfect Candidate for your ‘Dream Job’

When the placement season comes around, it can only mean one thing for students- Time to gear up. All that study, preparation, and project submissions (courtesy of sleepless nights) finally come full circle. With hopes and aspirations, candidates get ready to enter a shared space with the recruiters seeking to crack the code and grab that ‘dream job.’

However, the digital transformation in the last decade and the onset of the pandemic have drastically influenced the way industries work. Functions that did not exist until a few years ago (example: Data Scientist, Business Intelligence Analyst, etc.) are now becoming in-demand roles.

As market trends continue to evolve, the learning experience has to grow beyond the classroom walls. Students need to be provided with training that develops their business acumen and enables them to stay abreast of market trends.

So, how do aspirants become head turners and catch the attention of the recruiters?

Grooming Talents for New-Age Roles

Getting a plum job by the end of the final year is at the top of the bucket list of every MBA aspirant. Students enroll in colleges with the goal to secure the best ‘in-market’ roles. For that, they need to be equipped with the latest industry trends and demands. With trends such as Web 4.0 knocking around the corner, recruiters’ preferences have changed over the years. Companies now look for tech-savvy individuals who possess an aptitude for digital adoption. Jaipuria’s current placement season was steered by many new-age profiles such as Spend Analytics, Product Management, Business Analyst, Data Science Trainee, Solution Advisor, and more. Jaipuria continues to redefine its placement journey towards new milestones.

Consulting Jobs Hold the Lion’s Share

It is no secret that if one wants to get a high-paying and fancy job, consulting jobs are the way to go. Leading consulting companies visit the top B-Schools to find and recruit the best suitable candidates. In the 2022 placements, over 35 percent of the hiring in Jaipuria came from consulting which includes key market leaders such as Genpact, Accenture, Nielsen IQ, Hackett Group, HCL, etc. Moreover, over 150 Jaipurians were selected for roles in the Big 4 Accounting firms- EY, Deloitte, and KPMG.

This success is influenced by Jaipuria’s pedagogy which focuses on developing the learner’s listening skills (thereby knowing what to ask) and open-mindedness (to challenge their assumptions). Through a holistic teaching mode, students learn to execute interpersonal skills to build and strengthen relationships, giving way to efficient collaboration.

Becoming a Recruiter’s Choice

Whether one wants to believe it or not, this is the age of analytics jobs. Leading companies are continuously on the lookout for subject-matter experts in this domain. Recruiters seek candidates who possess a strong business understanding knowing how to apply analytics for a business solution.

Jaipuria’s experiential learning approach, ‘Workshop Mode,’ focuses on strengthening the business acumen in individuals by exposing them to real-life industry situations. By blending holistic aptitudes with a corporate touch, talents at Jaipuria become assets across various verticals, with Jaipuria becoming a hub for talent acquisition. With a continuous learning approach, Jaipurians have repeatedly scripted success stories, recording a spectacular performance in the 2022 placement season.

What Are You Waiting For?

When an MBA aspirant searches for the best B-Schools online, bagging a dream role at a dream company is probably at the top of their bucket list. Master the STAR Technique to Ace any Interview

Tips and tricks to face and ace the behavioral interview

It is totally fine to feel butterflies in the stomach when interviewing for a job, especially when you are still a college student. You have limited experience, and it is probably the first time you are facing a panel of big wigs. However, the interviewers are well aware of candidates’ emotions at this stage. Remember, they are here to select, not reject.

Basic Preparation Goes a Long Way

Besides being punctual, greeting interviewers with a smile, and following social etiquettes to the T, take a measured and careful approach while giving an interview. Experienced interviewers often pose hypothetical questions like ‘How will you handle a situation when one of your future teammates is non-cooperative?

These kinds of questions are known as situational interview questions. You can crack them easily if you master the STAR approach, an acronym for Situation, Task, Action, and Result.

STAR Technique – The Key to Unlocking Behavioural Questions

The STAR technique would stand you in good stead even when behavioral interview questions are posed. Behavioral interview questions place you in scenarios that you would have been in the past. These questions usually seek answers to how you got yourself out of a tricky situation. Besides answering situational and behavioural questions, the STAR also gives you valuable tips on keeping your answers brief and direct.

Well Prepared is Half the Job Done

Before facing the interview:

  1. Remind yourself of the activities you fared well in, particularly those that relate to the job description.
  2. Always ensure that the answers portray you in a positive light.
  3. Remember to explain one event thoroughly without mixing up several incidents.

There will likely be specific questions around the competencies for the position you are being interviewed for, so it’s best to prepare for such questions by noting down a suitable event in advance. Remember to answer in the context of all four parameters of STAR. Talk about the Situation, the Task to be resolved, what Actions you took, and the Results when answering the questions. Later, describe it in detail, highlight the most challenging part, and tell them the actions you took at that time and how you arrived at a solution. Once you have answered, pause and wait for the next question.

Honesty is the Best Policy

Even if you failed, tell them the truth, and explain how you got close to resolving it by taking the right approach. Interviewers usually want to see how you would approach a particular situation. Do also understand that when an interviewer poses a behavioral question, they look at how you positively portray failures.

However, it would be best if you never resorted to exaggeration. Do not show your team or teammates in a negative light. Job interviewers always prefer to hire honest and positive people.

Finally, practice answering hypothetical questions by putting yourself in an interviewer’s shoes. Do not rest until you are happy with the result.

Conclusion

Successful candidates have testified to the efficacy of the STAR technique, making it decidedly the best strategy for facing an interview. Moreover, it creates a system that candidates can easily remember when they respond to interviewers. This method makes you feel prepared and cautions you to be brief while answering.

So go ahead and rock that upcoming interview—no more butterflies in the stomach.
