Jaipuria Noida STUDENT Speaks

The strength of belief and encouraging words- a lesson to learn from Pushpendra’s PGDM journey at Jaipuria

“One of our professor of Information system in the first trimester during our ITM classroom session asked us a simple question- “Is there anyone here who has not worked in any Microsoft tool ever in life,” recalls Pushpendra with a smile on his face. “And I was the only one who had raised his hand, confessing that I had not and it took almost the entire class by surprise. My professor suggested immediately that I have to work really hard to ace up. That particular moment taught me a lot,” adds Pushpendra. By the time he was wrapping up the course, this Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida boy of Class 2019 had scored the 2nd highest in the subject.
The Jaipuria Institute of Management classrooms are really interesting spaces with myriads of life transforming stories and experiences embedded in them. Students come from across entire India, spend their 2 years pursuing excellence and in the process- leave their indelible marks in the growth story of the B-school and students like Pushpendra are perfect examples. However, what makes the learning ecosystem of a B-school like Jaipuria absolutely unique are the people themselves- they celebrate each other, and hold each other up in times of failures and successes. Each and every student contributes to the life of their peers and all of it in absolute humility and earnestness! It almost comes naturally to a Jaipurian- to stand as a rock by its team or teammate, as if it is a part of the b-school’s very DNA. And that is exactly what Pushpendra did for his friends and his friends did for him in return. How?
Be it managing the study group or giving proxy to friends busy in placement processes, Pushpendra did not deter from his responsibilities as a team member or a friend and when his turn came, his peers did not disappoint him either. “I was at the Group Discussion round of Amazon and I desperately wanted to make it to the organization. However, things didn’t work out in my favor despite all the hard work I had put into it and the rejection had me hit hard to the effect of losing all self-confidence. Recruiters were continuously visiting campuses and I did not have any ounce of interest left in me to sit for any other process. But my friends did not give up on me. IDFC First Bank arrived the subsequent week and they insisted I take the test. I was absolutely reluctant but they would not give up and pushed me to go ahead,” remarks Pushpendra who is now one of the new Management Trainees in the Sales Office of the organization. He had not informed his father about it till the HR declared his name among the finally selected candidates. “I was scared of disappointing him the second time, so I went from Noida to Jaipur campus for the selection round without informing him and when I finally got the job and informed him, he was pleasingly surprised,” says the boy who started with IDFC First from April 15, 2019.
However, nothing has been more inspiring for Pushpendra Singh Rathore than his mentor Prof. Ajay Bansal. “He always said- I will do something great in life and not just stop at getting a placement, and I will do whatever it takes to ensure his belief in me does not go to waste,” he says.
Pushpendra believes Jaipuria Institute of Management’s 2 years taught him to be a good human being above everything else. Team work, CSR activities, selflessness are just among hundred other things Pushpendra thinks his PGDM has taught him. He had arrived at the B-school in the summer of 2017 with the hope of gaining as much knowledge as possible in his specialization, perform as many Live projects that 2 years could offer and secure a good placement. And now that he is graduating from the school, he feels “I have almost all boxes of my check-list, ticked green.”

Alumni Speak Jaipuria Noida

10 years since graduation- Shreyasee fondly recalls her days at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida; as a topper, a student, a friend and an aspiring professional

As we took the elevator to reach Mindteck Business Services floor where Shreyasee Sinha, the Project Manager – Global Service Delivery & Infra  sits, we were mulling over our last encounter with her. It was the annual alumni meet of Jaipuria Institute of Management. We remembered her as the topper of Class 2010 with a voracious appetite for success. She had spoken to us for full 30 minutes about what it takes to make one’s mark felt in the domain of Sales and Marketing- post a PGDM education and what a delightful conversation it was! We were expecting to meet the same person- only more successful this time. And as the elevator door slid open- there she was, extending her hand to welcome us once again.
Shreyasee has been the kind of student at the B-school who never wanted to settle for anything but perfection. She left no opportunity slip her by for the two years of her PGDM. In fact, alumnus Swapnil Tiwari and Shreyasee had together initiated the first ever Marketing Club of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida which is now one of the most active student driven committees of the B-school and the first thing Shreyasee asked as we stepped into her office was- “how is the club working now? Are we in good hands?”
Having specialized in Marketing, Shreyasee’s work primarily revolved around the domain of Sales and Marketing. She started with All e Technologies and went on climbing the subsequent rungs of the ladder. With a very cohesive outlook towards problems and their solutions, in no time did she start making her natural passion for the domain translate into successful projects’ delivery for client like Pepsico.
Shreyasee’s perception towards Marketing as a domain is straightforward and simple. “You got to be agile and analytic in your approach if you want to make room for yourself in this space. There’s intense competition and of course, it is not going to be easy ever, so whatever you do, you got to do it very well or you will remain mediocre as a performer,” she explains. And having spent 2 eventful years with All E and 6 years at ESQ as Assistant Manager, Shreyasee moved to Mindteck that provides product-engineering solutions and IT services to several Fortune 100 companies, universities and government agencies across the world, in January, 2019.
As we asked her about her fondest memories during Jaipuria days, she recalls fondly about the first outing with her friends at the B-school. “We were 12 of us who went to Shipra Mall in Noida to bond over burgers. We spent hours chatting, losing track of time and by the time we started for the hostel- there was no commutation available. We remember walking 2kms at a stretch to reach campus and the friendship we forged in that walk- stayed with us throughout.” According to Shreyasee, “Jaipuria has all the ingredients it takes to help you with the correct Launchpad for your career. Even a decade back when we were attending the B-school, our professors used to adopt some of the most innovative forms of teaching to make the classroom experience exceptional. I worked with them for a long time even after graduating- on various projects and I must say, their unique perspective to subjects and sectors helped me evolve as a professional,” concludes the alumnus who feels extremely proud to see how far her B-school has come over the years.

Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, Prannoy Roy, Vishwanathan Anand, Motilal Oswal and Mohandas Pai are among some of the distinguished Indian personalities who completed their education in Economics and Commerce and are legends in their areas of interest. However, it is not easy to simply choose a career! A lot goes behind making a decision that you would in all likelihood, not regret in your life and as studies indicate, your profession decides majority of your actions in life. But with work roles and nature of jobs changing at unfathomable speed today, it has become all the more intricate to make career decisions with absolute clarity. 1. A career in Sales and Marketing
Every industry in the world has to grow and expand in terms of its size and profitability. Quite similarly, consumption of resources too is increasing drastically. Businesses are getting more skill-oriented. Therefore, demand for good sales and marketing professionals who can create the needs and market the products or services are in constant rise. In such a scenario, it is wise to opt for a career that is in high demand and intensely competitive. However, post your Commerce degree, if you take a work-ex in the field of Sales and Marketing and then ace it up with a power-packed MBA, you open for yourself the doors to career, options such as- brand manager, marketing strategist, marketing researcher, market analyst and what not!
2. A career as a Chartered Accountant/ Chartered Financial Analyst/ Company Secretary
If you are a commerce graduate, then you’ll naturally have your paths open for any of these courses: Chartered Accountant (CA), Company Secretary (CS), or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). However, before opting for a particular course, you must know the difference between each of these courses and the nature of jobs you will be exposed to.
3. A career in Human Resources Management
As you wrap a B.Com. degree and opt to pursue a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), you are in for yet another phenomenal ride. You can join in the office of employment and placement or compensation and benefits or recruitment or labor relations or training and development. Senior HR Managers handle multiple roles in their ranks. And the pay-checks? Exceptionally rewarding as well.
4. A career in E-Commerce or the new jobs of the 2020
E&Y’s latest report- “Future Jobs in India: A 2022 Perspective” states that 9% of the Indian population will be deployed in new jobs that do not exist today. And in this category, e-commerce organizations will contribute in massive hires. A B.Com. graduate with his/her skills in numbers, quant and data crunching abilities are obvious fits to these newly evolving roles in the digital world. Their B,Com. degree opens gateways for them to be hired as Digital Analysts, Data Analysts, supply chain management, product management, to name a few.
5. A ticket to the world of BFSI
Considered among the conventional job roles, once you graduate as a Commerce student, your entry to the world of Banking, Financial services and Insurance becomes almost a but-obvious. The typical Commerce syllabus across Indian universities and colleges include Economics, Accountancy, Business Studies, Statistics, Mathematics and Computers. Therefore, it is not surprising to see that major BFSI organizations across the country have Commerce graduates calling the shots across departments.
5. A career as an academic
Indian culture considers teaching and education as a noble profession. If you are inclined to this profession and wish to develop a formal career, you need to complete teachers’ training program/ B.Ed. If you wish to take a step ahead and teach in Universities or Colleges or anything equivalent, you need to clear NET and have a post-graduate degree. Commonly, graduate students start teaching in private colleges as a guest faculty or on contract bases and simultaneously pursue post-graduation or prepare for NET.
6. A career in Event Management
Event Management as an industry is on the move! With exponential growth in events across the world, the demand for appropriate professionals is on an upward rise. A successful event requires a lot more than the people involved it. It is about flawless planning; strategizing, handling finance and getting the logistics work in its favors. A Commerce graduate is often seen as an appropriate fit for Supply Chain or Event Management companies simply because of the skill-sets they get to bring to the table. With a holistic knowledge of how businesses work, a B.Com. graduate hits the ground running as an Event Manager.
7. Among million other things- starting up on your own
B.Com. when topped with a fine MBA, becomes a combination that is relevant across all the industries. Latest trends have shown that Commerce graduates are not just seeking jobs but are creating jobs as well. Be it opening your own travel agency out of sheer passion to travel or simply starting up a bakery shop from your garage, a Commerce graduate with his/her knowledge in Business can run the long mile to scale the next billion-dollar company for the country.
So, while you are on the crossroad of making one of the most decisive choice for our career- we suggest, observe your interests, give room to your passion, and consider your aptitude. No stream is not “good enough”. You just need to know- what is for you!

Down the memory lane with Jaipuria Alumnus – Devyani Sinha, Global Head Human Resources, Nucleus Software

Ms. Devyani reminisce the decade back story at Jaipuria “In those days, when we used to enter the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow campus we had to walk roughly a distance of 500 mts. before reaching our classrooms. And during that walk, we used to come across the campus Maggi point, where an old gentleman used make the tastiest Maggi I have ever tasted,” recalls Devyani as she talks about some of the fondest memories from her days at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. As a part of the second Batch of Jaipuria, Lucknow, Devyani Sinha the Global Head Human Resources (VP), Nucleus Software has some amazing stories to narrate. And we could not resist the temptation of gathering around her and sit down over a steaming cup of coffee to hear her talk of what the initial years of Jaipuria, Lucknow was like and how the B-school has evolved in the last two decades.
The Class of 1996-1998 used to study in the class that was situated within Seth M.R. Jaipuria school campus. “ The B-school was at its did not have its own building at that point in time. It was all very new- a new set-up; initial days. It was almost like going back to school days,” mentions Devyani with a bright smile on her face. “And imagine how far we have come now! There is hardly any Ranking in the Indian B-school space that does not recognise Jaipuria Institute of management, Lucknow to be among the leading B-schools of the country today,” adds the alumnus who was taken aback when she had returned to her B-school in the year 2008- a decade after graduating from its premises.
Devyani illustrious career covers TCS, Onicra, Usha Com and NEC’s HR offices prior to taking the office of the Global Head Human Resources VP at Nucleus Software in the year 2017. In fact, Devyani spent 9 years at NEC Technologies India Ltd. as General Manager- HR (Lead) before making the big bold career move. Clearly, she has seen HR evolve as a domain in the Indian landscape and with each change, Devyani has ensured to keep aligning her skill sets with that of her professional goals as well. Starting as a mid-level manager HR in 2000, Devyani has climbed from strength to strength and she thinks- “agility, flexibility and a killer survival instinct are critical to help one find their feet in the world of Human Resources.”
Devyani’s work revolves primarily around looking for strategies and activities around how to increase inflow of talent and how to reduce outflow of talent from the organization. Her work in daily basis includes operational and strategic involvement alongside building business and client relationship. And in all of these “the Jaipuria education comes handy till date because we were taught the fundamental principals of managerial subjects in ways we just cannot forget. There was tremendous thrust upon the concept of learning by practicing. I remember Prof. Luthra who used to pay attention to students’ weak and strength areas individually. In fact, she used to call me during lunch hours and ask me to speak on any topic under the sun for a stretch of 10mins and exercises like that leave long lasting impact in young minds in unimaginable ways.”
Devyani last visited the campus 3 months back and was thrilled by the energy of the students and the pace with which the campus has grown over the years. “I was overwhelmed to see the kind of work Jaipuria Institute of Management is doing to give India some really brilliant leaders of tomorrow,” she says.

What did Jerry Maguire mean when he said “Show me the money”?

“Show me the money,” said the persuasive Jerry as he tried hard to motivate his new business partners. But was Jerry Maguire marketing or was he selling? Tricky in this case, isn’t it?
Often times, we think we know the difference between Marketing and Sales but the two concepts work very closely across organizations. And yet, in certain organizations they are departments that don’t even communicate with each other without affecting the growth of the business. So what is it? What differentiates the two? Let’s contemplate this question for a moment.
Without Marketing, you would not have leads, or rather; prospects to follow-up with, but yet without a good sales strategy, your conversion rate may upset you.
If we break it down to basics, selling is product focused and is wholly producer driven. Sales are the action part of marketing and functions with a short-term goal in mind – to achieve the market share. The ultimate goal of any sales activity is to maximize profits by maximizing sales. On the other hand, Marketing techniques are based on facts like the customer will prefer to buy a product of superior quality, and this approach acts as the guiding light for the marketing team to understand the customer’s needs, study the market, and analyze the competitor’s position and product.
Fundamental differences between Sales and Marketing
Both Marketing and Sales are largely practiced in the market and still rank as the most popular choices. Let’s discuss some of the key differences between the two –
Marketing is when you do everything to connect with your target audiences and persuade prospects, while the sales process involves doing everything to close the deal and get a contract or agreement signed by your prospect. Both are crucial to the success of a business and no business can function without either of the processes. If you strategically combine both the roles, you are in all likelihood- in for a blood rush!
Your marketing plan should be incorporated with strategies that can be measured to track the prospects and work towards persuading them. On the other hand, the sale process involves interpersonal interaction. It is often done by networking, one-on-one meetings, and cold calls. Think of the whole process like this, your marketing efforts begin the process of moving a potential client or a prospect closer to the sale. If marketing is carried out effectively, the same prospect can seamlessly be moved from the status of a cold lead to a “warm level.”
Seeking Quality Education for the Long-run Play
Marketing is more than simply a function – it is a discipline and a mindset. It is way of envisioning the world that is consumer-centric, ever-evolving, and insight-driven. Similarly, sales are more than surpassing your own activity expectations and quotas. Sales is about focusing on the customer’s needs, persuading them to purchase your product, and having a one-on-one interaction to keep them engaged. However, in reality, no professional is born with these skills. Business schools in today’s age focus on training students with a multi-disciplinary, innovative, and research-based approach to educate and develop the next generation of front-runners.
The Role of B-Schools
Jaipuria Institute of Management – Lucknow, Noida, Jaipur, Indore takes a novel approach to educate students and prepare them for the challenges that the cutthroat Marketing and Sales world might pose.
Jaipuria’s full-time PGDM students are trained with real-life examples and data from companies, government agencies, and non-profits to work on practical problems. PGDM grads with these skills are highly sought after by multinationals in the following sectors – healthcare, technology, banking, and consulting.
The point is- you need to understand the difference before you opt for the area of your specialization or work! Don’t confuse between the two- at any cost.

Jaipuria Noida STUDENT Speaks

Jaipuria Institute of Management to Amazon- does Ambuja Tandon of PGDM Class 2019 feel ready and why?

When Ambuja chose to do a PGDM post her undergraduate degree, she had her eyes absolutely fixed on certain things and getting a placement with Amazon was one of them. It has been 20 months since. Ambuja Tandon of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida had to change a great deal about her. She struggled with Mathematics and Statistics as subjects to begin with and Ambuja clearly remembers how tough it was to cope with other students who had Commerce and Science in their higher secondary. “I had to focus on Maths and Stats the most and needed to motivate myself continuously to get to the fundamentals of these two subjects. My mid-term performance in Maths had me absolutely embarrassed but I realized, I have to put my act together and do whatever it takes to up my game,” explains Ambuja as she starts talking about her highs and lows of last two years.
Amazon had multiple rounds before the HR declared the final results and Ambuja clearly remembers how her late grandfather’s face surfaced in her mind, right that very instant. “I was overwhelmed beyond words,” she says and why would not she be? From event management at the B-school, to assignments, projects, internships and spending months preparing for making it to Amazon, there was nothing that this girl did not do to make it to this American multinational technology company. “I started by working on my soft skills, and then developing acumen for managing things through real life situations before I could sit with all my confidence at the Amazon interview,” she says.
Ambuja thinks Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida helped her evolve as a human being. When she got associated with the CSR committee of the B-school, she was not really sure of the enthusiasm she would be able to bring to the Club however, as time passed and Ambuja started getting involved with the Grace Home kids’ well-being. It took her very little time to realize the importance of self-evolution in order to stand amidst the crowd. “Adding to this major take-away was also the constant support that I received from Prof. Shalini and Prof. Nidhi. I remember this one time in my last two years when I was absolutely low on my self-confidence and they called me, counseled me and simply showered some amazing compliments and I was back on my feet- dealing with the issues that had brought me down in the first place,” elaborated Ambuja.
She will be joining Amazon as its Team Manager and she feels she is ready for her responsibilities. Ambuja was once given the task to organize a blood donation camp at the B-school, and lead the entire team from start to end. “I was hesitant! I was new to the entire set-up and something as significant as this could not be a joke. But I kept no stones unturned and delivered a super-hit event,” and Ambuja thinks that the skill-set of leadership is going to come extremely handy at her new workplace. “Almost 80% of our classroom assignments had to do with working in team. And by first year, we had to learn almost all subjects that a manager would need in her kitty, and I think these two edges will act as further enablers for me,” she stresses.
