2 rejections in the GD round and the power of bulletproof preparation- Nimish of Jaipuria, Noida talks about his placements with Marico

There’s nothing more stressful for a B-school student than the beginning of the placement season. And adding to that is the steam of being placed with not just a company but also a great one at it! For Class 2019’s PGDM student Nimish Kumar Sangal things have been no different. He started to feel the heat when things stopped going his way towards the end of 2018.
“I sat for two organizations and were rejected in their GD rounds. I was scared beyond words. I knew I have it in me but something was just not working out,” elaborated Nimish as we started asking him more about his lows before the good news from Marico came in. In Nimish’s words- “I was losing confidence but I realized, I can’t simply give up so easy. In fact that was one of the first things I was taught at my Orientation at my B-school. I just should not give up without putting a hard fight. So I started specifically preparing myself for outperforming in GDs. I would read about techniques, practice oration, consume every bit of relevant news, research on the art of speaking, and spend good amount of time to introspect on my weaknesses. Sometimes you see, you got to go to the root of the problem to solve it.” Needless to say, when Nimish sat for his third interview, he had the placement offer swinging in for him- all the way from Marico!
Marico is one of the leading Indian FMCG companies that clearly and boldly states its employer-employee philosophy right at the outset- “At Marico, we have no employees; only a group of members determined to prosper and grow with the company.” And Nimish strongly believes that he could not have hoped for more from the first job of his life. But does he feel prepared enough to join the organization as one of its Territory Sales Manager?
“My two internships in life have been real blessings for me beside the extraordinary delivery of the Jaipuria, Noida’s PGDM,” remarks Nimish. Last year Nimish interned with TATA Chemicals as a Territory Sales Officer. His project was on- “Driving the Efficiency of Salesman and Promoter led Outlets,” and he also had the opportunity to do a Live Project with Big Bazaar where as a sales trainee, he could learn a lot about people skills, how to convince customers, how to cross targets and react to critical analysis or feedbacks from team members. “In fact, my Marico interviewers were highly interested in each of these details. My interview almost revolved around my SIP,” he adds.
With the pedagogy at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida that stresses highly on national and international case studies, live projects, simulations, learning through market surveys, research and gaining from experiential learning modules, it becomes a given that a Jaipurian evolves as a street smart professional by the end of their PGDM. “And I think the expertise and resources of a premier B-school decides a lot for you,” says Nimish with an air of confidence around him.

Law and then PGDM- how does Shivika think it worked for her?

It’s funny how the little mischievous moments stay in heart far longer than the gravely serious ones. And Shivika Perti reinstates the same feeling as she says- “now that I am all set to step out of campus, all the silly things we did as students make me want to stay more.” Shivika is about to join Godrej as a Management Trainee in a matter of few months and as graduation time is coming closer, class 2019 is wrapped with a sense of nostalgia and Shivika is no exception. “We would wait for the attendance procedure to get over and then try figure out excuses to bunk the lecture no matter how interesting the session is; you know how it is in student life right?” quips the girl from Lucknow who arrived to Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida to pursue her PGDM.
Shivika had completed her internship with Amul and the summer stint needed her to increase the demand of Curd and Buttermilk in South East Delhi. “I already felt prepared for Godrej because the job responsibility corresponds to that of what I had experienced with Amul already,” and complementing that further is Shivika’s Law Degree with specialization in Corporate Law.
When Shivika sat for the interview with Godrej, she was clearly asked- “why did you even opt for joining an MBA while you could have already joined the corporate world with your law degree,” and she was ready with her answer. “I wanted to complete my education in every way possible. While Law taught me about various functional verticals of the corporate world, Management gave me the overall perspective,” answered the girl confidently. In fact, Shivika strongly thinks that her recruitment with Godrej will also help the organization gain from her skill-set and she adds further, “in my opinion, all law graduates must pursue a Management program for fine-tuning their careers and enter the industry with clarity.”

Team Head at Amazon. A significant CTC. The amazing Amazon to begin with!

Starting at a CTC that any young graduate would be envious of, Mishita Singhal of Class 2019 of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur is embarking on her journey with Amazon as a Team Manager from May, 2019.
The selection round with Amazon was “quite hectic”, as Mishita describes. And why would it not be! After all, Mishita was applying for the largest e-commerce marketplace and cloud-computing platform in the world- Amazon. “There were around 200 people who sat for the process and there were GDs, personal interviews, panel interviews back to back, but then I was free before lunch,” explains Mishita. And the same day she had another interview lined up on campus with Careers 360.
This cheerful Ajmer girl has always been career focused but she had opted for a PGDM in order to specifically learn three things- business strategies, good management and the art of networking. “I was never very confident about my capabilities and I strongly think, my PGDM made me confident about who I am and more aware of my potential. My peers believed in me immensely and my faculty stood as rocks beside me. There was no way that the prayers of so many people could go in vain,” says Mishita while explaining the role of a PDGM program and a premier B-school.
Mishita was asked innumerable questions throughout the selection process but the panelists took major interest in her summer internship. She had interned with ITC Rajputana in 2018, while pursuing her PGDM and her internship primarily revolved around figuring out- “Employee Engagement Activities Impacting Employee Effectiveness and its Direct Relationship to Cost.” However, the trickiest question of the lot was- “why should we hire you when you can easily join your family business and earn way more than what we are offering you?” Clearly, Mishita had some thinking to do!
Her work at Amazon would test her in People Management and her number crunching abilities. “I have specialized in HR and Marketing and think my work is in absolute sync with what I studied and what I majored in,” mentions Mishita happily while talking about the way Jaipuria, Jaipur has prepared her to face the modern-day corporate humdinger.

Joining the Swiss transnational food and drink company- a conversation with Kartik, PGDM Class of 2019, Jaipuria, Indore

Kartik took a deep breath when the recruiters from Nestle asked him- “so imagine yourself as your best friend. Now, how would you describe Kartik Khandelwal- things about him which are great and things which aren’t so?” Of course it was no ordinary question, especially when you were actually expecting your domain knowledge to be under scrutiny from right, left, center and out. Karthik gathered his thoughts, and tried to look at himself as a detached observer. Entire 35 minutes on phone was about his personality. “Nestle first round of interview was all about figuring out their potential employee’s humility, team working spirit, honesty, commitment level and attitude towards life,” says Kartik of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore.
Raised in Indore itself, Kartik Khandelwal arrived at the B-school with the objective of making a mark for himself. “I was confident that I will get a good placement but I never thought that it would be one of the highest salary packages from my class,” elaborates the man who is joining the Swiss transnational food and drink company headquartered in Vevey, Vaud, Switzerland. Kartik had already interned with Britania in the year 2017 and has interesting ideas around boosting Sales in the FMCG sector. He did another internship during his PGDM with Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore at Feedback Business consultancy Pvt. Ltd, New Delhi. The summer internship project was on market research and served as great help during this placement process. His key work at Nestle would involve Setting and achieving sales target, developing of assigned territory and addition of new outlets.
So how does it all feel to Kartik now that he is about to join Nestle? “I got the news on 18th December, 2018 roughly around 3.30 P.M and I just remember hugging a colleague from Jaipuria who was standing right next to me,” remarks Kartik who then ran to find his phone and make a call at home. For Kartik, it was not just about being placed at a great company but also about the relevance of the profile he was offered. “My specialization is in Marketing and Finance and the office offered at Nestle is in a great sync where marketing as a specialization will make me understand the market better and finance will help me in managing sales, discounts, and preparing market intelligence report,” he adds.
And now with days coming close to graduating from the school and walking into the corporate world, what are the few things Kartik is going to miss about his Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore life? “Oh plenty! But the most memorable moment from hostel life has been the night we friends played pranks on others by pulling on ghost avatars. We created insane scare and goodness, that was crazy fun!” chuckles Kartik who means to preserve all the memories and lessons experienced at the B-school and make use of them in the highs and lows of life.

Making it to Deloitte- How did the B.Tech. + PGDM with dual specialisation combination act as the perfect fit?

Kushagra Saxena was the first person called inside the interview room when interviewers from Deloitte had arrived on the Jaipuria Institute of Management’s Jaipur campus. He sailed through the Technical Round and was made to wait for 6 long hours till his turn came for the second interview round. Every bit of his body was hurting from fatigue and immense anxiety but he knew, his patience will take him to the organization he has been preparing for, since so many years of his academic life.
This Jaipur boy had once read the American Charismatic- Joyce Meyer’s quote that stressed- “Patience is not simply the ability to wait – it’s how we behave while we’re waiting,” and that day, during the interview, he just could not shrug Joyce Meyer from his mind. He felt his interviewers are observing him and he needs to keep his calm and poise, no matter the circumstances. And Kushagra waited patiently.
Finally, his name got announced and he was the second last person to enter the interview room. “Even though I expected they might be exhausted by then, but it was completely on the contrary. My interviewers had multiple questions coming my way but the trickiest of them was- ‘What do you think makes you fit for the position of Associate Solution Advisor because you had also chosen marketing as one of your specializations?’ I knew this particular answer would decide the outcome of this interview and will make or break my dream.“

Kushagra had picked his specialisations very carefully. He opted for IT as one of the area and Operations & Marketing as another. And he used his foresight to even do a very strategic internship with Mahindra Special Services Group (SSG), New Delhi. Mahindra SSG is a corporate security risk consulting firm that helps organizations reduce risks and enhance competitive advantages and our boy from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur completed his summer internship project on- “Analysis of Risks and Risk Consulting Firms of India”. While Deloitte came in search of its Associate Solution Advisor – Financial and Risk Advisory, Kushagra’s summer internship experience seemed like an obvious fit to the position on offer. But what did Kushagra exactly answer to make his specialization in Marketing seem like an instant hit to the Deloitte interviewers? He said in simple words- “Knowledge in Marketing is a value add for all profiles, across all organizations. Plus, my internship being highly relevant to the job on offer and my specialization bringing the Midas touch, I believe I am fitter for this job than any other applicant present here today.”
On 5th September, (yes, Teachers Day!) the results were finally announced. A lot of students had sat for the process and 35 were selected for the first interview round. The numbers went on decreasing one round after the other and till the ultimate round- Kushagra survived. “Deloitte is almost every Management students’ dream company. When I had first joined Jaipuria, I did not know my PGDM would help me to reach this far. And the good part is, I will be utilizing both my qualifications- B.Tech. and PGDM at this profile offered by Deloitte.”
Kushagra’s profile will demand him to have sound knowledge of different computer languages alongside various Management skills to execute his daily tasks around identifying and evaluating complex business risks, testing and analysing emerging IT areas and much more!

“But having all said and done, I will miss my B-school for billion reasons. The fest, the conclaves, my responsibilities as the SPOC of MRC, pulling all-nighters to complete assignments, the Singapore trip, bunking class for Nahargarh fort, the silly conversations with friends, being awed by teachers and lecturers, Jaipuria, Jaipur has been everything for the last 2 years of my life,” says Kushagra nostalgically. The boy is now all set to become the new Associate Solution Advisor – Financial and Risk Advisory of Deloitte- the largest professional services network of the world.

The amazing part about it is- it was the first company she has ever interviewed with. She wrote a research paper and presented it in front of an entire panel at IIT Kanpur. Her paper was even selected and published in Scopus Indexed Journal. She further moved on to publish her second research paper, which got an overwhelming response at IIT Allahabad. As much as it is about gunning for the big jobs, it is about a sound education as well

A PGDM program that is transformative and student-centric in every way.
It’s all happening now. Businesses are changing. Challenges are growing. Opportunities are multiplying. The stakes are high. The important question at this point in time- is your MBA preparing you enough to beat the onrush of the shifting market?
In Jaipuria Institute of Management’s endeavor to make management education- an experience and an opportunity of a lifetime, we try to question, think, analyse, re-imagine and re-create almost everyday, in everything we do. Result? Our students hit the ground running. We do not train them for businesses, careers or jobs. We make them life ready. We teach them to think, learn and evolve which in turn helps them grow, both personally and professionally. With the help of our outstanding faculty and distinguished leadership team, Jaipurians are pushed our students to go beyond boundaries, geographies, thought patterns and practices. We show them the bigger picture, they painted the canvas with colors of their own. As of today, Jaipuria Institute of Management has been instrumental behind creating almost 8200+ socially responsible managers and citizens of the world. Here’s how!
1.Industry Connect: Creating close synergy with industry is our first priority and differentiator. We do it in multiple ways—1. Making industry guest session in regular courses compulsory, 2. Inviting industry professional to conduct workshops, 3. Singing MoU for full course delivery, 4. Ensuring purposeful summer internship in industry, quite often with stipend and a pre-decided project, 5. Conducting training and management development program for industry professionals, 6. Inviting industry stalwarts and experts in Academic Council and Area Advisory Board, 7. Organizing regular industry visits and commissioning live projects, 8. Assigning industry professionals as mentor to students. More than 200 such connect is made available to students in any given year which a huge opportunity for them not only to learn but also to create network.
Industry driven courses are run by IBM (software based analytics), BSE (financial and stock market), KPMG (six sigma and lean management), Thomas Assessment (Assessment centre), Fortis Hospital (Hospital Management), Genpact (Financial standards and reporting).
2.24 x 7 Learning Environment: Learning is divided into three phases—pre-learning, learning, and post-learning. Technology enabled online platform is created as part of pre-learning preparations. Flipped videos on core concept building are made available to students. As part of post-learning reinforcement, students can access recorded classroom sessions through mobile app and moodle platform. The classroom learning is a lot discussion and activities based where students take active part in deliberations. Pedagogies adopted in classroom is aligned to promote active learning. It is evident that learning works well for students when conditions are created in pre-phase and reinforced in post-phase. A bit of care and help offered to students in organizing their learning tends to enhance the possibility by several percentage. Jaipuria understands how learning works for students and how it can be made more practical and hands-on.
3.Beyond Classroom Learning: Learning centricity is all about capturing all possible spaces where students tend to learn, both in formal as well as non-formal mode. Research suggests that 40-60 per cent learning for students occur outside classroom. A range of programs designed to sub-serve the goal of learning, fall outside the classroom. This is indeed important as to how we create engagement platforms for students. Opportunities to lead by example, learning-by-doing, and learning-by-watching make students really take charge of their own learning. Platforms such as Hot-Coffee-Hot-Issues where students discuss on current issues over a cup of coffee, WAVE (Written and Verbal English) where students practice spoken and written English, and Seminar where students present their research work to a larger audience do serve duel objective of capturing learning and enhancing confidence. Discussion Forum and Peer Learning activities do tend to bring in contemporariness and opportunity to bring in day-today happenings into the fold of learning.
4.Global Exposure: Learning from global practices, visiting places and meeting people are indeed very critical for developing personal vision. Jaipuria creates ample opportunities for students to develop vision and macro view for their personal growth. Exchanges and visit opportunities have been created under MoUs with top class institutions in France, South Africa, New Zealand, Dubai, Singapore, Finland, Bhutan, and USA. Our students recently visited France, Dubai, Singapore, South Africa and similarly we received students from US, New Zealand, and France. Our students completed summer internship in Bhutan and created e-marketing plan for rural enterprises. Students from France is studying with us for full trimester exchange and similarly our students are scheduled to visit them for full term. The emphasis is on creating long term exchange opportunity for our students.
5.Outlining Graduate Attributes for life-long-learning: Quite unique to to our MBA program, the Graduate Attributes (GAs) are set to define the outcome in terms of what a student would develop in context to knowledge-skill-attitude (KSA). These competencies transcend beyond the program and tend to inculcate life-long-learning in students.. The graduate attributes are brought down and assimilated into what is called Program Level Outcomes (PLOs). This provides a larger picture about the objective of the program and what the program is expected to achieve. This also provides guideline for curriculum design, delivery and assessment of student learning. This mapping also indicates what Jaipuria as a responsible institute is contributing to the life of students in the pursuit of well being of family, society, and the entire nation.
Our placement testifies the rigour of our MBA program
Jaipuria Institute of Management’s quest for outcome-based education has led to stronger correlations between academic performance and placement performance of students. This is a testimony of the fact that emphasis on knowledge, skills, and attitude and its alignment with curriculum and measurement of learning thereof has resulted in improved student performance. Jaipuria students are able to crack national and international companies with good profile and high package (in the range of 18-20 lakhs per annum).

Alumni Speak Jaipuria Noida

Working with 5 brands, gaining 10 years’ experience in HR- alumnus Gaurav Tripathi talks about his B-school and the journey so far

Be it recruitment, employee engagement, training, talent management, employee relations, campus recruitment or organizational development Gaurav Tripathi has tested the waters of Human Resources in almost every capacity. An alumnus of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida’s PGDM Class 2007-2009, Gaurav has worked for four renowned organizations before joining LOTS Wholesale Solutions as Senior Manager, HR in September 2017.
The man is absolutely charming. Beside the decade long experience that he brings to the table, Gaurav has an air of integrity around him and the first few minutes of conversation is enough to make you realize that you are talking to a man who is extremely passionate about the work he does. And in the words of his colleague Mr. Vaibhav Goyal, Head – Retail Ops – People at Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail Limited, “Gaurav as a professional has his ears to the ground always and this habit of his has helped him to gain respect amongst the front end employees of the organization. He always approaches things with a solution in mind.” Aren’t those exactly the Must Have’s for a successful Human Resources professional!
Gaurav Tripathi joined Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida in the year 2007 and by the time he was wrapping his PGDM he was already hired by Godfrey Philips India Ltd. as a HR Executive. Since then, his professional journey had no looking back. Having spent 1 year and 5 months at Godfrey, Gaurav made a strategic move to Madura Fashion & Lifestyle. He joined as a Regional HR (North) in 2010 and handled MFL brands like Louis Philippe, Allen Solly, Van Heusen, Peter England, Planet Fashion & People. A promotion awaited and within 2.5 years, he was made the Asst. Manager HR. Gaurav spent 4 years at the organization and in the year 2014, interviewed with Pantaloons and was instantaneously absorbed by the company in the office as Deputy Manager HR before Gionee India happened in 2016. Needless to say, by the time Gaurav was looking for his next big move- he already had experiences gathered from three major sectors- Hospitality, FMCG and the Retail. Of course, you cannot stop talents like Gaurav Tripathi from shining bright in whatever they do!
But how did Jaipuria Institute of Management really helped this HR professional make his mark in the domain? “Well, while my BBA taught me the theories, my PGDM helped me with an active and experiential learning ecosystem. The Jaipuria pedagogy is full of with Live projects, group works, case studies, simulations, business games, internships and exchange programs. We were taught by some of the best minds in the world of management- both inside and outside the classrooms. Every bit of my 2 years at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida had me broaden my horizon of knowledge and understanding.”
Having said that, is college life all serious and no fun? As Gaurav would say, “I keep returning back to my B-school almost every second month. I interact with the juniors, meet my faculty, explore possibilities of alumni engagement, yet amidst all that, every time I pass those corridors or the residential blocks, I think of the nights we have spent in groups prepping for last minute assignments, drinking tea, fighting over extra rasgullas over dinner and what not! Those were definitely the best days of my life!”
So what would the alumni suggest to other aspiring professionals trying to find their feet in the competitive sector of Human Resources? “Push yourself to go beyond the textbooks. If you want to survive in HR, you got to be highly sensitive about cultures and learn to adjust and respect diversity. Also, it is essential that you learn t understand the organization first before you start to zig things in it. And of course, just 2 months summer internship is not enough to prepare you for the corporate milieu. Take up Live projects and real life case studies- beyond what is being taught in the classroom. Your ‘extra’ will decide where you land in life!”

5-Ways to Effective Management Education

Management education is about impacting output and seeking relevance.
How can that be achieved?
Shruti joined a premier B-school after struggling through several rounds of selection. She also faced plethora of advises on how to choose a B-school and how to crack GDPI. The amount of information she had to make through was at times so mind boggling that she was not able to decide between advices and between choices. B-schools websites are cluttered with information and most of them do not have clear focus. For a fresher like Shruti it was a kind of nightmare. CAT or MAT, IIM or non-IIM, PGDM or MBA are just few of several dilemma she confronted. Shruti came out victorious and made a right choice not so much because of oversupply of information but precisely because she knew what she wanted to do in life and why she opted to join a business school. Many students like Shruti would know that management education is not just about book-based study program and world class infrastructure but it is more about where it would lead to in terms of life, career and their own wellbeing. There would also be questions like—Whether it would give opportunity to be part of a solution? Whether it would give platform to challenge own self? Whether it would help linking with global community? Shruti would search for affirmative answers to these questions while looking to join a B-school. That is where a B-school like Jaipuria Institute of Management comes out as highly relevant.
Indeed, Jaipuria Institute of Management being a B-school committed to effective management education pays good deal of attention in 5-ways to ensure optimum benefits for management students:
1.Broader canvas of elective choices: New and upcoming areas must be tapped and offered as elective choices. Jaipuria Institute of Management as a progressive understands that and keeps on expanding the elective choices for its students. For example, digital transformation is impacting economy and society not only in terms of scale, scope and speed but also started impacting wellbeing of people. The curriculum on digital business must deal with both its operation as well as impact. A holistic approach to elective offering can make management education really effective.
2. Modes of offering courses must make students feel being part of it: Jaipuria Institute of Management recently experimented with a workshop based model for Design Thinking. Students were engaged in an experiential form of teaching-learning session where they learnt about Design Thinking by practicing through real time projects in a workshop. The experiment was highly appreciated and approved by students indicating an uptick in their understanding of the course. One needs to really question frequently- are we merely teaching in the classroom or are we open to innovative alternative ways of delivery? Workshop and seminar based courses are always great alternatives. Continuous innovation in teaching method and nurturing a mind-set in favour of blended learning (often a blend of off-line and on-line) can enhance effectiveness in a big way.
3.Learning often happens outside the classroom and can change the life of a student significantly: A B-school with conscious plan for capturing the learning beyond classroom can enhance the effectiveness in a lot of ways. Researches suggest that our generation of students learn 60-70 per cent from outside the classroom. A great blend of discussion forum, cafeteria talk, evening peer sessions, field study, on-the-job engagement, extended internship can maximize learning effectiveness. The best part about outside classroom engagement is that learner feels highly engaged and self-driven. The job of institution is to create such learning opportunities and make them both credit and non-credit driven.
4.Do not miss out on the global stage: A business education sans global relevance is not a business education at all. Today, managers are expected to make big decisions for bigger purposes. Unless they understand global norms, global practices, and global policies they are bound to be ruled out for the nex-big promotion. Plus, “life in a suitcase” is amost the norm of the day for successful Management professionals. It is important to be able to cope up in the international stage. Jaipuria Institute of Management has strategic international student excange programmes with top schools and universities across the world including Carelton University (Canada), Eastern Mennonite University (USA), Rennes School of Business (France), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA), to name a few. In fact, students recently completed their internship in Singapore and Dubai and returned to their classrooms at Jaipuria Institute of Management.
5.Industry integrated programs for value add: It is not very uncommon to find a MBA/ PGDM graudate today. However, what is uncommon and absolute dear to a recruiter is- the value add that the Management grad brings to the organization. Your PGDM/ MBA curriculum today got to have relevant certifications and value-add courses attached to it. Jaipuria Institute of Management offers Industry integrated programs in collobaration with KPMG, IBM and BSE helping students stay ahead of their peers and ace the game in their respective industries.
It can be reiterated that teaching-learning is a soul-to-soul communication and teacher and learner need to be in great sync to achieve effectiveness of outcome. Adding to that is the relevance of what you are teaching and how!
In a B-school, the process of learning must translate into effective outcome, impacting life and wellbeing of the learner. A B-school should urge its student to question, analyse, question again and then settle for an answer.
