5 Skills you need to clear any Group Discussion and Personal Interview

The real purpose of holding group discussions (GD) and Personal Interviews (PI) in the MBA admissions round at leading MBA colleges is to test applicants’ “communication skills, knowledge of topics, thought process and leadership impact on the audience in order to complete their list of accomplishments and offer admission. Anyone who has good communication skills and knowledge of current events and believes that these skills are sufficient to pass a group discussion is wrong because there are a few other things that are needed to crack GD. Before dealing with the most important group discussions (GD) Tips and expert advice, it should be clear to you that if your communication skills are good and your behavior in the discussion is positive and consistent, then you are prepared to show your leadership skills to the group without being arrogant.

Group discussions test the knowledge, communication skills, and coherent flow of thought necessary for a candidate to lead on current issues. A healthy debate leads to the selection of one or more candidates from the group on a particular subject in a group discussions (GD) round. The discussion helps the group to make a specific decision or come to a conclusion.

Find below 5 Skills you need to clear any Group Discussion and Personal Interview

Lead the discussion

Your contribution to the discussion is the way you communicate with others, define your role in the group, and influence how others see you. By initiating a discussion, you can get the attention of the crowd without being judged. A discussion gives you the opportunity to hear the thoughts and ideas of other students.

Having a discussion is an essential skill for a well-rounded speaker. To this end, it is important to take into account the characteristics of effective discussion conditions that promote interaction and engagement in small groups.

Relevance is the key

Give structure to your ideas and listen, bring the group together when they stray, give a new dimension to the topic, build someone who takes a different point of view and give credit to other participants. Allow the participants to introduce themselves, whether you set up an icebreaker or have two students introduce you. Discussions are a powerful mechanism for active learning, and facilitating discussions allows participants to explore new ideas and recognize the value of others’ contributions.

5 Skills to crack Group Discussion and Personal Interview

Active Listening

A good listener has greater chances of winning over others. Just speaking throughout the discussion doesn’t make you better. Listening Skills are Essential for the group discussions (GD) round, so carefully listen to what others have to say. You should learn to give others a chance to speak. If the speaker is making an eye-contact with you remember to acknowledge him by nodding your head, so that the speaker is aware that his listeners are listening to him and paying full attention. This will also show that you are vigilant and are an active participant in the discussion. Unless you listen well, it will not be possible for you to add value to your content and communication.

Listening offers you the opportunity to summarize the Group Discussion on each and every aspect.

Good communication skills

It is a must. Improve your communication skills, the better you are in them the easier it will be to make yourself clear and to score well in this round.

Body gestures

Remember, it is not just the mouth, it is your body gestures which when in sync with speech, make others understand what you are trying to say. The panelists observe the way you sit and react in the course of the discussion. Body gestures are very important because your body language says a lot about you. In a GD, sit straight, avoid leaning back on the chair or knocking the table with a pen or your fingers.

CAT Results: What to expect and next steps

Greetings from Jaipuria Institute of Management.

CAT 2021 results are going to be released in the coming week and we are sure you must be eagerly (and somewhat nervously) awaiting them. With the DILR section being on the slightly difficult side this year, we expect scores to come mostly from the Quantitative Analysis section of the question paper.

Date of CAT, 2021: 28th November | Total no. of registrants: 2.31 lakhs

Here are a few tips that will help you to understand the results and prepare for the next stages.

Checking your test score

The process for checking your CAT 2021 score is as follows:

  • CAT 2021 Results with the overall percentile will be sent to the candidates through SMS on their registered mobile phones.
  • CAT 2021 Result in detail can be downloaded from CAT website www.iimcat.ac.in on the date of CAT 2021 results.

Step 1 is to click on the ‘Download Scorecard for CAT 2021’
Step 2 is to ‘Login to View/Download Application Form/Score Card’. Enter your CAT 2021 registered user ID and password and click on login.
Step 3 is to click on the icon ‘Score Card’ in the next window that opens before you
Step 4 is to click on ‘here’ in the message displayed ‘Click here to download your scorecard’. Your CAT 2021 Scorecard is downloaded and you can now take the print of the same as well.

Understanding your test score

The result of CAT 2021 will be announced in the form of percentile and section-wise & overall scaled scores.

Scaled scores are raw scores (marks scored on the basis of correct and incorrect answers in each section) moderated for the assessed difficulty levels of each slot in which the CAT was conducted. This is done to even out the differences in the difficulty levels of each slot’s test paper. The Scaled Scores of Section-1 (Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension); Section-2 (Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning) and Section-3 (Quantitative Ability) are not additive.

To put it very simply, Percentile scores are a representation of how many people are behind you based on your overall scaled score. For example, if there were 200 people taking a particular test and your score places you in 4th rank. That means there are 196 people who scored less than you. This means that your percentile is 196/200 or 98.

This is what your scorecard will contain:
• Your personal details like Name, Address, Photograph, Date of Birth, Email ID
• CAT 2021 Registration number/User ID – Both should be the same
• Your category – General/OBC/SC-ST
• Gender – Male/Female
• PWD Status
• Date & Time of CAT 2021 exam
• Section-wise CAT 2021 exam Scaled Score and Section-wise CAT percentile score
• Overall CAT 2021 Scaled Score and the overall Percentile score
• Important Instructions related to CAT result
What next

Once the results are announced, each B-school will announce a cut-off score. Interview calls will be issued based on this cut-off. IIMs and Non-IIM member institutions independently decide how to use CAT 2021 scores on the basis of their own selection process. The scores are to be used only for selecting the candidates for their Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) program.

On the basis of the CAT 2021 Cut-off list, the candidates will be short-listed for the second stage selection process comprising of – Group Discussion (GD), Written Ability Test (WAT), and Personal Interview (PI).

Remember that in addition to the CAT score, your Class 10, 12, graduation marks will also count. In addition, preference points are given to certain categories such as female candidates, candidates with work experience, etc.

Make an assessment of the B-schools that you wish to realistically apply to. Your assessment will be based on factors like college rankings, quality of faculty, placement track record, MBA course fees, alumni strength, location, etc.

Validity

Of course, you know your CAT score isn’t going to be valid forever. The CAT 2021 result will stand valid only till December 31, 2022. You got to select your preferred B-school by then.

Also, no query regarding the issuance of the CAT 2021 scorecard will be entertained by CAT Centre 2017 after the validity date.

Tips for the admission rounds

Personal Interview (PI): Preparation for PIs involves improving 3 very distinct aspects: a) technical knowledge; b) verbal communication skills (tone, language, diction, etc.); and c) body language (posture, appearance, etc.)

Group Discussion (GD): Preparing for GDs involves developing knowledge about topical events as well as preparing for a hypothetical business situation. To learn how to structure arguments, develop listening skills. Remember GD is not about dominating but convincing. Skills that are evaluated include presentation, listening, comprehension, leadership, and problem-solving.

Written Ability Test (WAT): WAT is about more than just a candidate’s writing skills. Coherency, clarity of thought process, and clarity of expression are tested here. Essays, Statements of Purpose (SOPs), etc. are forms of WAT.

Self-assessment is most important in preparing for WAT. This will help you to formulate your thoughts in a manner that comes through as honest, clear, and logical. Beyond this, being focused on creative writing skills, improving grammar, and practicing sharp writing is important. The best source for all these is reading and practice.

We wish you all the very best in your application journey.
Be ready to crack the right B-School.
With best regards,
Team Admissions

Anxiety of IIM CAT – Story of a CAT Aspirant

CAT is closing in and things ain’t looking as good as I may have thought of in the first place. Every mock test I have done has continuously shown an upward trend in terms of the way my scores have moved. Fine, but there is this heavy headedness as the date closes into bell the CAT. I want to sleep but I seem to run out of ideas of how to go about it. I want to keep practicing and I am wondering if that is the way to go especially in the last few days. I want to gorge on fast food and oily brilliance of Indian snacks and people around me ask me not to mess with my system. There are the neighboring uncle and aunt who are worried about whether I would do well. My friends are concerned if I would go into depression and my pals from the training place are considering barring me from all conversations and chat groups as I keep reminding them of the approaching day.

I guess it is about the way I am looking at things. I am a morning person and I have got an afternoon slot for the examination. Exactly at that very precise moment in the afternoon when I love to look at the world with a slumber vision. And my pal who is a hard-core afternoon/evening sorta person has got the morning slot. Murphy lurking is head into matters that do not need the laws to be applied. I reckon, this whole funda of morning /afternoon/night persona – all of it is just pure mumbo-jumbo without much depth in them. I mean I have seen my dad being a complete night person most of my life. But when he had switched his job and had an early morning shift the whole equation changed and changed fast and without a single hiccup. He just did what he is supposed to do without a hassle. Just switched. It is like what Nietzsche says if you know the ‘Why’ you can live any ‘How’.

The same goes for the oily food or the paranoia of other people or fear of impending depression or any of those matters. It is all inside my brain. There shall be talking a lot of noise all around because again I have showcased to everyone that this is important for me. I have shown everyone my fears. I have laid it out to everyone around how I approached this whole examination from the beginning and how close to my heart it is for me and how it was important for me in every step of the way. Now that the day is coming closer, I reckon, it is me who has been scattering the fear and paranoia more than anyone else and seemingly everyone is playing along and when I receive that extra nudge I am feeling, holy mother, even they believe the same.

In reality, people are just allowing my own thought process to beam back at me with much more power.

The CAT examination is just an entrance test to take admission in MBA/PGDM that checks for my aptitude, my language skills, my speed at thinking and getting things done, my management of time and my ability to prioritize, and my knowledge about my own self especially my skills. My being a morning person, afternoon person or an individual with extreme anxiety has nothing to do with anything. Because the coolest individual, the healthiest one and the brightest one everyone gets the same opportunity and everyone gets the same amount of time and space and every other thing. So it is about just letting go of all these illusions and noise and just getting it done. It is like a Nike slogan – Just do It. And it is nothing but that.

All those hours of practice, all those hours of mentoring, all those hours of my wonderment and then add to that my own aspiration to be a contender who is worthwhile for this examination, I reckon that is good enough to give the best shot that I have.

Well, pray for me, and yes, I am having a Samosa while I write this, and a glass of Diet Coke (which in my readings has 98% water- Ha). I will bell the CAT and good luck for everyone else with the bell.

What is better: Make a Guess or Skip a question in CAT 2021?

CAT is a management exam conducted by IIM to take admission in MBA. One single question in the CAT exam can make or break your career. What if you are stuck between yes and no to answer a certain question? This is one of the most common issues that CAT aspirants face.
Each student is different but there are certain common lines that can be drawn to mark answers to a particular question especially, when you have reached up to 50-50 in choice. There are some methods that can be adopted in the following ways:-
Approximations: CAT, as any other competitive exam, demands solutions in fixed timings. Solving sums with exact numbers would be time-consuming. Here the solutions usually come with approximations, to save time and increase the number of attempts. This method can be applied to mark an answer if we are relatively sure of two choices.
Trial and Error: This is done where no rule or shortcut technique applies. Usually, this is done while solving problems that have answers that are feasible to guess. It is a shot in the dark.
Type in the Answer (TITA) type of question is the change you need to look out for in CAT exams as it does not have negative marking. 30% of questions belong to TITA, thus making them the easiest question to score from.
Each student is different from another and so is their ability to solve a puzzle. So, don’t go by others. Their capacity to figure out the right answer is their capacity at the end of the day. As for you, your caliber is different from theirs. Here are the four categories of a question –

  1. It seems you can calculate the right answer and that too in less time than solve it right there.
  2. It seems a question is difficult yet can be solved though it will take time; keep it in the review zone. Solve it later.
  3. It seems that the question is too difficult, don’t touch it.
  4. While solving a question, if you feel caught at a certain point, keep the question in the review zone. Solve it later.

The smart usage of time

  1. Attempt the section which you are confident at. So at least the possibly solvable questions do not remain undone.
  2. Then get the job done with the questions that you solve but they are believed to take a bit more time.
  3. Give two minutes to solve these questions but if it appears that the solution is still not on its way, leave the question.

A quick walkthrough

  1. Read the question. Solve it if it appears easy.
  2. Keep the question in the review zone if you think it’s going to take a bit more time.
  3. If any question is too difficult for you, don’t waste your time on it.
  4. If you are not able to solve a question beyond a certain point, keep it in the review zone, come back later.
  5. And last but not least – mark only when you know the answer with no scope of doubt.
  6. Do not make wild guesses.

CAT 2021 is just a few days away and aspirants should start preparing from now. The idea is to get the hang of answering the questions with accuracy. The other (last-minute) choice is to be able to guess an answer by:

  • Understand what the question wants from you
  • Examine the options provided
  • Eliminate the far-fetched options
  • Choose the better fit between the options left (if any)
  • Fish out your answer from the question itself

When a candidate is stuck with a question, s/he tries to judge with the luck factor. Relying on guesswork isn’t advised as it may reduce your percentile. Remember about the negative marking i.e. one-third of marks are deducted for every wrong answer. Learning the art of choosing the best strategy to solve a management institutes exam is essential.

Are you Applying for a B School? Avoid These Mistakes

If you have always aspired to have a successful corporate career or want to embark on an entrepreneurial journey, then a Business management School offers you the opportunity to make your dream come true. Management institutes in India are the training ground for future managers and leaders of the corporate world. You paid all your attention for CAT to get a chance with the best B Schools in the country to take admission in PGDM and pursue your MBA. But as the CAT is out of the bag, you can’t overlook the crucial next step.

Applying for a B School gives you the power of choice, which should be exercised carefully. Several steps are involved in picking the management program that suits your specific interests and career goals. “One size fits all-management-aspirants” MBA programs are now a thing of the past. Want the best platform for your career dreams? Avoid these common mistakes that many MBA hopefuls make and regret later.

CAT is not the end of the world

Every year there is an emphasis on CAT score as an entry ticket to the top rung B Schools. But academic experts remind us that it’s neither a guarantee for your admissions nor is it the only entry route you can take. If your CAT score disheartens you. Bolster your prospects by appearing for other entrance exams like XAT, MAT, and CMAT which can gain you entry into top rung private colleges like XLRI, Jaipuria Institute of Management, GIM, and more.

Research, research, and research more!

Your research about different aspects of learning at a B School is the key to securing the best admissions. Common mistake aspirants make is go by the past reputations, brochures, and campaigns by B Schools. There is no better reliable source than talking to alumni and students of any management institute. Your research should also focus on the faculty strength, industry network of B School, etc.

It’s important to go beyond placements!

Another common mistake MBA aspirants make, is that they focus only on the placement record of a B School. While it’s true that placements are crucial to get a head-start in your career, if you are looking for its long-term success and satisfaction, you should look beyond the placements. It’s also important to understand that many B Schools highlight their excellent placement records but there is more to it than meets the eye.

The game of specializations!

What are the specializations offered by the B School? Are they in keeping with your interests? These are questions you need to ask yourself before applying for a program. IIM Bangalore offers MBA in Business Analytics, which is a recent trend. Jaipuria Institute of Management has a unique PGDM in Financial Services, MBA in Retail Management, Services, and MBA in Marketing Management. These MBA equivalent PGDM programs at Jaipuria offer sectoral specialization within the specialized program in Consulting, Supply Chain, Online Retail, Capital Market to name a few from the lot. You can choose niche specializations in keeping with your goals.

Niche programs have a tendency to take you higher

If you aspire to start your entrepreneurial journey or want to take your family business to the next level, then you might want to consider programs that are aligned with your paths. Many B Schools like SPJIMR, Jaipuria Institute of Management, MDI are among few B-schools known for their Entrepreneurship programs. It would be a mistake to not consider a program that has courses on entrepreneurship or B Schools that have entrepreneurship cells. Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida in Delhi NCR entrepreneur and innovation cell has been the launchpad for the successful launch of several startups by students in recent years.

Do not forget to prioritize diversity while looking for the best classroom

When you are assessing B Schools to pursue your dreams, are you thinking about campus diversity? Experts stress that studying in an environment where you interact with students from different academic backgrounds, those with past work experience etc. can lead to an enriching learning experience. You could be making a huge mistake by overlooking this factor when you are applying to B Schools.

Grow well!

B Schools are not just about academic excellence but your overall development as well. Some of the leading names in the industry are extremely well-groomed personalities. And their personalities have been shaped on campus through several extracurricular and industry-focused activities. As an aspirant, applying to a B School without knowing about its student clubs, festivals, industry interfaces, alumni network, and other extracurricular initiatives would be a folly.

Avoiding these mistakes will take you a step closer to the best B Schools that are the best fit for you. Then it’s up to you, in the interview room to present yourself as a candidate, who will be a valuable addition on the campus, to secure your seat.

Ultimate preparation tips and tricks to excel in IIM CAT Exam

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a computer-based MBA entrance test for admissions into the IIMs and several other prestigious B-Schools in the Country. It evaluates you on Quantitative Ability (QA), Verbal Ability (VA) and Reading Comprehension (RC), Data Interpretation (DI) and Logical Reasoning (LR). Common Admission Test (CAT) is Conducted on a rotational basis by IIMs.
Here we are with some ultimate preparation tips and tricks to excel in IIM CAT exam:
1. Analyse the mocks
Instead of focusing on the number of mocks taken, one should focus on analysing the depth and outcome of these mock tests. You’ll know the solutions of what you could not solve and also how you could have scored better, if you were able to attempt it aptly.
2. Plan your own strategy
It’s inspirational to read the experience of those who have performed well in the past, however, it doesn’t mean you follow their strategy blindly. It’s important to have a strategy that suits you to bell the CAT.
3. Do not run after cut-off scores
Very often, aspirants run after attaining the cut-off scores of their dream B-schools and simply focus on obtaining it. However, if you want to have an ambitious target, aim for a 100 percentile. This may not lead you to the actual score, however, it’ll help you maximize your efforts to get what you want.
4. Adhere to the timelines
Candidates often find it difficult to attempt the entire paper in the allotted limited time period. Hence, it is important to focus on time management at the time of preparation than at the time of the final exam. Follow a strict clock when you are preparing to learn timeliness.
CAT result
The CAT results would be announced in the first week of January. Based on the cut-offs and scores, the participating institutes can be shortlisted for further selection rounds. With such a stiff competition, cracking CAT is not a cakewalk. So, arm up and suit up for the battle CAT.
