Alumni Speak Jaipuria Lucknow

Deenbandhu Gupta, a veteran in the sales and marketing field shares his experience and what it takes for a successful career in this field.

Deenbandhu Gupta, alumni of the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow (batch of 1995-97)

With 17 years of work experience spread across three industries, Deenbandhu Gupta, alumni of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow (batch of 1995-97), started his career with a placement with Motor and General Sales Ltd., authorised dealers of Tata Motors. “I joined the company in 1998 and I was handling their Azamgarh branch,” he says. “It was the start of a job in which I had a great learning experience – one where I witnessed the launch of both the Tata Sumo, as well as power steering in trucks.”

With a career spanning durables to FMCG, and Insurance, which, as he tells us, “is really concept selling,” Gupta feels that he owes it all to his two years at Jaipuria Lucknow: “Our Founder Director at that time was Dr. NK Dhooper and his words to us hold meaning for me even today: ‘You are pioneers in maintaining the image of the Institute’. Consequently, I have always tried to live up to the exemplary standards set by my alma mater.”

Switching from the automobile segment to a career in the soft drink industry in 2001, the next four years saw Gupta as Area Volume Coordinator in Agra Sales and Marketing Services (P) Ltd. Here, he was responsible for the sales and promotion of products like Coca Cola, Fanta and Limca in Agra City. Talking about how his experience helped him grow in confidence, Gupta recalls the time when the CEO was slated to visit the market and he was assigned the task of increasing volume sales and the visibility of the products. “I managed 60-70 outlets in a period of two days for Brindavan Bottlers – bottlers for Coca Cola,” he explains. “At that time, we were facing some issues with 15-20 outlets. I managed to resolve the matter, with the help of some of my seniors in only one day.” Deenbandhu tells us that the focus was to persuade the shopkeepers to “keep their shops looking good for 72 hours as a goodwill gesture to solving their problems overnight.” In the end, the VIP visit went without a hitch. “It was a tough job but I managed it well.” For this, he thanks the lessons that he learned during his time at Jaipuria, Lucknow. “We were taught by an excellent faculty who was always at hand to guide us,” he says, reflecting on his time at the institute. “We learned that sales is essentially teamwork and if you work like the ‘boss’ you never get results. We also learned about leadership and how a true leader leads from the front.”

In 2005, Gupta decided to switch professional streams and join the Insurance sector – first with HDFC Standard Life Insurance as Business Development Manager and then with ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Ltd., as Area Manager. “It was being touted as the toughest sell, but I took it on as a challenge. I not only passed the test but I also saw promotions come my way!” he says, explaining that the basics of sales never change. “There are challenges in every industry. However, the job requires you to sell to customers – the products may differ, but the objective is the same.”

Gupta is currently employed with SBI Life Insurance in Mathura as Senior Branch Sales Manager. He believes that dedication, a passion for the work one does, and a firm grounding in the basics are qualities that have helped him get where he is today. He believes that success is dependent on the relationship between the leader and team members during and after working hours. “You must have an emotional connection with other employees,” he says, adding that developing relationships is an important part of the profession. According to Gupta, other qualities that can help a professional climb the career ladder are: “The capacity to listen; to question if you have any doubts; to leave nothing to assumption and interpretation; to lead from the front and to fulfil your role with utter professionalism.”

Despite his busy schedule, Gupta says he still visits Jaipuria, Lucknow – though not as often as he would like. “I will always be grateful for the lessons I learned,” he says. Lessons in the art of marketing and of looking at problems and opportunities holistically, that have brought him as far as he is today – and those that will certainly hold him in good stead in the future.

10th National IIC Annual Conference of Jaipuria, Lucknow brings together leaders from academia and industry to discuss ideas in Technology and Business

March 12th-13th, 2016: The 10th Annual IIC Conference of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow focused on the theme of “Technology and Business”. IIC stands for Interdependence, Integration & Co-creation, and the annual series was conceptualized in 2006 to foster an industry-academia interface through a discussion and analysis of ideas on major issues pertaining to sectors of India’s socio-economic environment.

Commenting on the choice of the theme, Prof. Vijay Prakash Anand, the Convener of IIC-2016, said that “Technology has been impacting the way business is done for quite some time now. It has not only created new business opportunities, but has also helped businesses to manage themselves better. Taking this into account, the agenda of IIC 2016 is to facilitate the dissemination of research-based knowledge, case studies and novel business applications related to technology and business among academicians and practitioners.”

Initiating the conference proceedings, Prof. Dheeraj Misra (Dean, Research and Development) spoke about how traditionally labour-intensive industries are transforming into capital-intensive ones. On the need for adaptability, he said “technological advances mean that it is not the fittest of species that survive but the one which is most responsive to change.”

The Chief Guest for the conference was Mr. Mrutyunjay Mahaputra, Deputy Managing Director and CIO, State Bank of India, who spoke about the need for technological innovations, in addition to describing the power of data analytics and delivery platform agnostics. His presentation also talked about the myths and realities of digital banking and the steps taken by SBI to use digital technology, future trends in banking and security challenges being faced.

The first technical session, moderated by Prof. Shyam Ji Mehrotra, focused on the theme of “Digital Banking”. The speakers for the session were Mr. Pramod Dixit, Deputy Director, Punjab National Bank Institute of Information Technology, Lucknow, Mr. Nayagam, General Manager (IT), Tamil Nadu Mercantile Bank, and Mr. Amar Habibullah, Co-Founder and Director, Trenserv Pvt. Ltd. The session highlighted how cash transactions are increasingly on the wane. On the growing unpopularity of hard cash, Mr. Nayagam said “digitisation has pushed the need of physical banks and paper money into the dustbin of oblivion.” He added, “though payment is being done through mobile wallets, in order to ensure security, commerce through a bank is more feasible. The future of the banking system lies in tracking the customer’s transaction pattern and in getting a holistic view of all of his earnings and expenditures.” The potential of Aadhar to bring about a paradigm shift in the payment culture was also discussed. At the same time, cyber security was highlighted as a major hurdle that needs to be overcome in order to increase the digital spread. Growing phishing attacks, skimming and keylogging and the precautions against each of these were discussed in detail.

The theme for the second technical session was “Role of Technology in Offering New Business Opportunities”. Mr. Naveen Luthra, Vice President, Group Strategic Alliances, askme.com and Mr. Kiron Chopra, Chairman and Managing Director, CR Rubber Products Ltd. RBI, Lucknow, were the speakers for the session.

E-commerce and the rising penetration of handheld devices in the shopping experience were cited as a very visible development. Also, the potential of ‘Internet-of-Things’- a connected network of machines, software and hardware, was discussed as a still untapped source of new business opportunities. Elaborating further, Mr. Naveen Luthra said “there would be a time very soon when machines would interact with each other, take care of human beings and would require very little human intervention. He concluded by saying that technology has become an embedded part of our lives and that is where new opportunities are born for the new generation.” Commenting on the disruptive power of technology, Mr. Kiron Chopra said “many traditional segments such as Photography, Messaging, etc. have all been disrupted in the ‘Age of Digital Conversion’ and more will continue to be.”

Day 2 of IIC-2016 built on the theme and momentum of Day 1. The first session was “Role of Technology to Understand Customers Better”. Customer empowerment through technology was discussed by the speakers, which included Dr. Yasho V. Verma, Managing Consultant, SAP, former COO, LG Electronics and former CEO, Onida, Mr. Arun Mehta, Global Head & Director, Data Management, Maersk Line and Mr. Pankaj Maheshwari, Senior Consultant, CSC India.

Mr. Mehta spoke on how one can get more business, bring in digital disruption, and manage and mitigate the risks involved with technology. He further mentioned some surprisingly innovative uses of technology, some of which are the study of the patterns of consumer behavior detected by devices using cognitive intelligence. As an example, he highlighted how Walmart’s analysis of a consumer helped them in increasing their business. He also mentioned that this top Fortune 500 company used video footage to study the expressions and responses of customers to the activity around any product, and figured out a correlation between placing two products together in order to increase the sales of both. Subsequently, comparing the earlier models of businesses, he explained how Information Technology has brought about a revolutionary change from log analysis to web analysis and further on to digital intelligence.

The fourth technical session of IIC 2016 centered on the theme “Technology for Innovation and to Gain Sustainable Competitive Advantage”. The speakers of the session were Mr. Pulkit Trivedi, Head of Industry – e-commerce biz, Google India and Mr. Naveen Tandon, Director, International External Affairs, AT&T.

Mr. Trivedi stated that “innovation is the most amused and abused lingo in the current market”. He highlighted that the segmentation of consumers is getting really difficult and the future is in the hands of artificial intelligence. He also explained how technology is disrupting the patterns of market penetration – radio took 110 years to reach 5 billion people, while smart phones took only 8 years to reach 5 billion people. Therein lies the power of technology. He reiterated that consumer behavior is very tough to predict and calls for the revision of traditional marketing books. The second speaker, Mr. Tandon, discussed the expectations from a policy framework and emerging technological formats needed to gain a competitive advantage. “A policy provides a vision and a roadmap for growth; so in order to be a critical and relevant player in the future, policy makers need to rethink their design, strategy, and operations in fundamental ways in order to ensure significant technological and socio-economic developments”, he explained.

The final part of the Conference was “Faculty Paper Presentation”. Prof. Kavita Pathak, Dean Academics, introduced the speakers of the session, which included Dr. Ravinder Kaur, Professor HR, Dr. Jaya Chitranshi, Faculty Symbiosis International University and Dr. Sindhuja Mishra, Associate Professor (Humanities), BBD, National Institute of Technology and Management, Lucknow.

IIC-2016 drew to a close with the valedictory session. After all of the sessions and eminent speakers, the participants went back enriched in the knowledge that no business can grow in isolation and that technology is the driver that brings business and its myriad stakeholders together. The opportunities that it creates should be looked at with optimism. Speaking about the impact of technology in his valedictory address, the Guest of Honour Mr. Bibhas Kumar Srivastava, Former Executive Director, Corporation Bank, said “Technology is not only helping companies in creating new businesses – it is also helping them in cost-cutting across various dimensions of business and thus helping them to be more efficient.” He also talked about the various banking facilities that are now available to customers because of mobile technology.

Jaipuria Indore Placement Update

"The professional and diverse culture on campus at Jaipuria Indore ensures a holistic learning experience," says Prathamesh Chaturvedi (Jaipuria, Indore Campus, Batch 2014-16).

Prathmesh Chaturvedi’s start to a successful international placement began with Jaipuria Indore’s summer internship program where he was placed with Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd.

Prathmesh Chaturvedi (Jaipuria, Indore campus, batch of 2014-6), was looking for more than just a B.Com degree. He wanted to add an MBA to his qualifications so that he could increase his business knowledge and managerial skills, take the right decisions and learn how to balance his professional and personal life. Selecting the right institute was thus an important decision. “There are a lot of Business Schools in our country, so after  much research on education portals and speaking with friends, seniors and family about which B-School would be more suited to me, I chose Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore. Its placement record and world class faculty only reinforced my choice,” he explains.

Today with a job in the Midcom Group, a leading telecommunications distributor in the Middle-East and Africa, Chaturvedi looks back at the placement process with a huge sense of accomplishment. “My placement officer always believed in me. It was under his guidance that I succeeded in cracking the interview – that took place through a series of Skype calls,” he recalls. Recounting how he was grilled in almost every area, this young man says that it was his confidence, honesty, his focus and preparedness that finally won him the day. His role in the organisation as Executive Trainee encompasses managing business with distributors and retailers across the African subcontinent, getting in new business, identifying new markets and business opportunities and much more.

“The managerial skills as well as soft skills that I learnt during the PGDM course with Jaipuria, Indore, as well as the basics of marketing and business management taught by the faculty are definitely going to help me in shaping my career,” says Chaturvedi. However, the start to his successful international placement began with Jaipuria Indore’s summer internship program where he was placed with Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd. (HCCBPL), Vadodara and Anand, Gujarat. “The subject of my project was, ‘Marketing Development using new Products for new Customers: An Exploratory Study’ and it was guided by my mentor and placement officer,” he says looking back on this period with pride.

And he has every reason to be gratified because at the end of his internship he was awarded “best performer among all the interns across all four Jaipuria campuses by the Area Sales Manager, HCCBPL, Central Gujarat. “It was all the result of the hard work and learning process at Jaipuria, Indore,” he admits.

Today, as he steps into a corporate career, this young man says that his all-round growth at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore has ensured that he is a far more focused, confident and down to earth individual. “It is the culture on campus, which is professional as well as diverse in terms of personality development and social activities that ensures a holistic learning experience,” he elaborates. Campus Coordinator of the CSR committee, Coordinator of the Marketing Club (AY 14-15) and part of the Student Excellence Council (AY15-16), Chaturvedi recalls his early days at Jaipuria Indore, “When we used to begin the day doing Yoga. This was followed by intense classroom learning, presentations, cultural evenings and group discussions. The involvement of the faculty throughout the degree, the mentorship, that helped me get this far… All these are experiences I won’t forget,” he says advising students to be determined and dedicated. “Be down to earth, keep trying to achieve better than your previous successes and you will get what you want!” Sage words from someone who’s been there and come out with flying colours.

Alumni Speak Jaipuria Lucknow

“Be it in the assignments or in the delivery of presentations, my years at Jaipuria, Lucknow taught me to push harder to get things done”

Kumar Saurabh Singh spent most of his formative years in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, a district known for its coal fields and energy plants. The youngest in his immediate family, Singh opted to study Commerce and Finance – areas of education that are very different from his family’s proclivity for Science. “This is a field that excites me because of its concept of profit and loss, which is applicable to almost everything,” he says.

Undecided about what he was going to do after he had graduated and after weighing the pros and cons between a degree in Chartered Accountancy and a PGDM, Singh chose the latter. “My reason was simple,” he explains. “A management degree would not only give me a proper insight in to the world of Finance but it would also give me a closer look at other segments like Marketing, Human Resources and Technology – all very essential to my all-round growth as well as my survival in the industry or in a core finance job.”

The young man says that he zeroed in on Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow (batch of 2011-13) because it was “not only a very reputable institute in the state, but also because it had an excellent placement record.”

Looking back on his time at Jaipuria, Lucknow, Singh says, “Those two years were the most constructive and unforgettable years of my life. It was the first time I had experienced living in a hostel, making lifelong friendships, adhering to tight deadlines for assignments and quizzes, making presentations and preparing for two exams a day!” He is also grateful to the “brilliant faculty, all of whom helped me learn the tricks of the trade.”

Singh recalls the supportive role that professors RK Ojha, Masood Siddiqui, Rashmi Chaudhary and Reena Agarwal played in helping him realise his dreams. But, as he adds, life was not all about academics – there were a host of “extra-curricular activities as well.”Winner of a gold medal at the Inter-college Football Competition, Singh also volunteered for annual festivals and was a part of the Alumni Committee. These activities gave Singh the opportunity to get in touch with his seniors and obtain their valuable insights. Extra-curricular activities, he says, are an essential part of an all-round experience: “They teach us a lot of things – how to work in a team, invent new moves, and be innovative and push harder to achieve new heights. I still pursue some of my hobbies to remain in a positive frame of mind.”

Recalling his summer internship program, Singh says he interned with the Bank of India’s zonal office in Lucknow. The subject of his dissertation was:“Comparison of Products and Services in Banking Industry and Customer Satisfaction”. This, he says, helped him understand the various products and services offered in retail banking:“My responsibilities included focusing on businesses, as well as individuals to identify the problems faced by customers. I also worked in various departments, including Marketing, Finance, Asset Recovery and SME Loans. In addition, I conducted a field survey in around five to six branches to analyse customer satisfaction levels.”

With an industry exposure of over two years, Singh confesses that his career has revolved around the Financial Services industry, which also happens to be his area of interest and expertise. “My first job was with Mahindra Finance (a leading Non-Banking Financial Company),” he begins.“It was a campus placement and I was posted in their Gorakhpur Territory Office as Management Trainee, Operations.”

Singh has since changed his job profile. He is currently employed with the Royal Bank of Scotland Business Services in Delhi in the capacity of Senior Process Associate. “It is essentially a desk job which not only concentrates on client services but also on process improvement discussions,” he explains. “As a part of a team, my role is collective as we have to meet deadlines and provide quality service at the same time. We also take up additional responsibilities as and when required, support business exigencies and extra initiatives and projects as per the unit’s requirements. This is all done to ensure that all process-related controls are in place.”

One of the biggest take-aways this young man says he got from his days at Jaipuria, Lucknow was in the areas of handling pressure and meeting deadlines. “Be it in the assignments or in the delivery of presentations, my years at Jaipuria, Lucknow taught me to push harder to get things done,” he says.

Singh’s advice to students wanting to pursue a career in finance is simple:“Know your strengths, identify the area in which you want to make a career and opt for subjects that can help you in that area.” For those wanting to explore jobs in the banking industry, his message is clear as well: “Banks today are opting for written aptitude tests so as to select the most suitable candidates. The qualities you need are good analytical skills, communication skills (verbal and written), team-working skills, an attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure.”

FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Jaipur

Finance unplugged – Dr Babita Jha casts new light on Finance

Dr Babita Jha, Assistant Professor,Finance at the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, talks about her novel approach to teaching subjects that are considered intimidating by many students.

Born and raised in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, Dr Babita Jha’s father was the Dean of the Government Veterinary College in Mhow. Dr Jha, however, did not follow the medical route. She graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, did her MBA in Finance and Marketing and followed this up with a PhD in Commerce.

Dr Jha who joined the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur as Assistant Professor, Banking and Finance, says that even though her subject areas (banking and finance) are considered intimidating by many students, her teaching approach ensures that students stay involved and interested. She says that she does this by “Extensively using cases and case-lets which bring alive a real world situation in the classroom and which students can also relate to.” She further ads “I also bring the latest financial data of companies into the classroom and then help students to analyse and interpret them. Since these are companies they have usually heard of, it makes the whole exercise very interesting.”

In her experience, she has observed that as students start analysing situations and interpreting them from a finance point of view, they become more interested and confident and increasingly want to build their careers in the financial side of a business. Those wanting to go into the banking sector get a better handle on the industry. They develop “the ability to think outside the box, solve problems, and predict and avert problems that have not yet materialised” Dr Jha explains.

Coming back to the complexity of finance as a subject Dr Jha explains that there are several students at the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur – as there are at B-Schools across India – to whom the study of finance during their PGDM can be difficult. However, as Dr Jha says, these students, mostly from non-commerce streams, think that finance is only about money, but that is not the case. It is therefore the responsibility of the faculty to “showcase the importance of the subjects and also their relationship to other specialised areas. Again, Dr. Jha’s focus on real world case-studies and problem solving helps students in understanding this.

Dr. Jha has been doing research in the area of finance and its application to solving real-world problems. That’s what motivated her to write a paper entitled ‘Micro Finance and Women Empowerment in India.’ Microfinance, as she explains, helps in the reduction of poverty and leads to the empowerment of women. However many women in rural India, including those who are poor, are unaware of the several initiatives taken by Micro Finance Institutions. “My paper focuses on this.” Currently Dr Jha is working on a paper relating to the Micro Insurance sector in India.

Dr Jha, who is glad to be part of the faculty at the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, says that the Jaipuria, Jaipur experience helps in “equipping students with new knowledge, new skills, attitudes, mind-sets and values. It has the best of quality infrastructure that leads to the overall growth in individuals. The Institute’s main area of thrust is on research and training, which is imparted to the faculty members and students on a regular basis.” The topmost B-School in Jaipur, the Jaipuria Institute of Management “believes in imparting quality education to its students,” says Dr Jha emphatically.
