Eligibility criteria for Common Aptitude Test (CAT)

As per the official eligibility criteria of CAT, the candidates for the exam should meet the following parameters –

  • A bachelor’s degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent CGPA from a recognized institute or university.
  • There’s no age limit to appear for Common Aptitude Test (CAT) 2021.
  • The candidates belonging to SC/ST/PWD category need to score a minimum of 45% in bachelor or any discipline from a recognized institute or university.
  • The students who have appeared for their final year bachelor’s degree exam with the required percentage and are awaiting results can apply for CAT 2021.

Important announcement on eligibility criteria for writing CAT 2021
The CAT Centre has received several queries from candidates regarding their candidature due to the “promotion/pass” certificate awarded instead of the “marks” certificates in the last two years (pandemic years) of their bachelor’s program. Currently, the CAT application requires candidates to meet eligibility criteria of at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA [45% in the case of candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Disability (PwD) categories]. This has raised queries in the application process for CAT2021.
In view of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and resulting disruptions in the evaluations across the country, the CAT Committee has made the following exceptions for CAT2021.
1. Candidates in the final year: Candidates with “promotion/pass” instead of “award of marks” certificates in any of the last two years of the bachelor’s program can enter the “Promotion or Pass” option in the application form. This will allow the candidate to complete & submit the CAT 2021 application form despite the requirements of minimum eligibility criteria (45% and 50% [or equivalent CGPA] respectively). This eligibility relaxation is also applicable to those final year students with an “award” of marks.
This exception is available only to candidates who are completing the bachelor’s degree this year or are in the final year bachelor’s programme (graduation years – 2021 and 2022)
2. Candidates graduated in 2020 and 2021: Due to the implementation of point 1, and considering that there could be different evaluation patterns adopted by different universities across the country due to the covid-19 pandemic, the CAT Committee has decided to remove the minimum percentage of marks (45% and 50% [or equivalent CGPA] respectively) for appearing for the CAT 2021 exam.
This exception is made to ensure parity to candidates who have completed their bachelor’s degrees in 2020 and 2021.
Note: This announcement is only applicable to the eligibility criteria for writing the CAT 2021. Candidates are advised to look at and follow respective institution-specific admission policies.

Reservation

As per the legal requirements, 15% of the seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates, 7.5% for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates, 27% for Other Backward Classes candidates belonging to the “Non-Creamy” layer (NC-OBC), up to 10% for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) candidates and 5% for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwD).
As defined in The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPwD Act 2016), “Person with Benchmark Disability” means a person with not less than forty percent (40%) of a specified disability where t h e specified disability has not been defined in measurable terms and includes a person with disability where the specified disability has been defined in measurable terms, as certified by the certifying authority. “Specified disability” means the disabilities as specified in the Schedule of the RPwD Act 2016. How to Prepare for CAT with no Physical Coaching?

We have all been hearing about the term “global crisis” for some time now; through the recession, political turmoils, etc. But this year when the Covid-19 pandemic struck we realized the true meaning of the word. The impact has been universal and in several instances, devastating. If you are preparing for the crucial CAT entrance then you have felt the ripples of the effect too. But as they say, every challenge and crisis also presents an opportunity.
You might have been locked down in the house without access to physical coaching as you prepare for CAT 2021. But you can look at these unprecedented times as an avenue to unlock your true potential and fool-proof your results, which are your ticket to top B Schools in the country. How? For starters, don’t be unnerved by the idea of not getting physical coaching to rely on. There are many instances where CAT aspirants have done brilliantly through self-study.
One of the biggest advantages CAT candidates have during the period of lock-down is that you can solely focus on your preparations. In usual circumstances, you will be juggling several responsibilities including traveling to college, coaching classes, etc. Of course, there are many distractions along the way. But the imposed isolation is an opportunity to open the doors to some of the best management institutes in India through self-study.

Simple Tips to prepare for CAT without Physical Coaching:

  • The Social Dilemma: Yes, we recommend watching the new Netflix documentary by that name; but that’s not what we mean here. Studies have suggested that people’s usage of social media has gone up drastically during the lock-down. While you are isolating at home, make sure you practice some isolation from online platforms as you prepare for the CAT. Self-isolation with self-discipline should be your mantra.
  • Give yourself a break: Usually, it is recommended that CAT aspirations have a strict study plan to get through their preparations in time. But these are not usual times, and be kind to yourself if you are not able to stick to a rigid routine. Give yourself a break when you feel like you need it. Flexibility will be the key to work towards your goal, and remember, it’s also an important attribute for future management professionals.
  • Be the cool CAT: Let’s not underestimate the psychological and emotional impact the pandemic has had on us. As you throw yourself headlong into your CAT preparations try and take time off to unwind. While you follow all safety protocols, you can go out for a walk in the neighborhood or watch a movie, talk to your friends. It will help you de-stress a great deal.
  • Get Material-istic: Yes you are going to be deprived of physical coaching, which is something your predecessors had the benefit of. But now you can pick your study material and make it count for you. Yes, it’s a challenging task but researching the material is also a smooth way of getting acquainted with it. Incorporate video lectures that you can easily find today, into your study material.
  • Study Groups are vital: For CAT aspirants it normally means spending time in the college library, campus, or home, studying together. But now you can take advantage of social media platforms of management educational institutions to widen your scope of study buddies. It’s the perfect platform to brainstorm, understand simple ways to solve certain problems, discuss schedules and issues you are facing. Look at it as a strong support group.
  • Focus on individual sections: It is recommended that you create separate study times for each of your CAT sections. It’s a great time to pick up a novel of your choice to enhance Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability. The practice is the only way to perfection as far as Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning is concerned. Figure out ways to do mental calculations as you prepare for the Quantitative Aptitude section.
  • Mock it online: If you are preparing for the CAT for the first time then mock tests acquaint you with the exam structure and type of questions to expect. You might have familiarized yourself with the structure with the previous attempt but still, need to assess your preparations before the big days. That’s where online mock tests come into the picture, which can be taken in the early stages of your preparations to modify them accordingly.

Yes, Covid-19 has made physical coaching impossible for CAT 2021 aspirants. But in a way, it has also evened out the playing field. You alone are in charge of your success. Focused self-study offers the silver lining, which can help you claim the golden ticket to the best business schools in India.

New entrepreneurs need to have a handle on managing teams and getting the best out of them, which is something you learn through these assignments.
    5. Platform to exhibit Talent: B Schools also offer you an excellent opportunity to showcase your skills on dynamic platforms including college fests. Student clubs are excellent training grounds to sharpen your leadership skills.
    6. Understand Trade Tricks: Organizing seminars and workshops is one thing, participating in them and rubbing shoulders with who’s who of the business world is quite another. Through these B School conferences and seminars, you learn tricks of the trade from the experts. Entrepreneurs who have been there, done that, can warn you of the pitfalls and inspire you to succeed.
    7. Network: B School campuses are also a hub of contacts with experienced professionals, academics, entrepreneurs along with those who can make waves in the future – your peers. This cohort of focused and driven students can be your advisors, sounding boards, collaborators, focus groups, customers, and thus a strong network asset.
    8. Confidence: Launching a startup involves impressing future partners and investors alike. Your PGDM courses boost your credentials and make a strong first impression on your behalf. They will see you as someone who has learned the ropes, understands the world of business and is ready to take the plunge. Simply put, it instills confidence in them for you.
    9. Risk-Taking Ability: Many “business gurus” will tell you that entrepreneurship is all about taking risks. While it’s true that launching any startup involves risks, management programs also teach you to mitigate them. As your risk-taking abilities are encouraged you will be in a better position to assess them and make the right moves for your business.
      1. Incubation Centre: Top B Schools in the country also have special initiatives to hone entrepreneurial skills and mindset amongst students. Jaipuria Institute of Management (Lucknow, Noida, Jaipur, Indore) has E-Cell that conducts related activities throughout the year. The aim remains to shape and nurture entrepreneurs of tomorrow.

How to Build your Profile for MBA

Learning doesn’t happen by chance; it has to be attained and seen as a step towards your goals. If that goal is to scale the corporate ladder or become an entrepreneur then securing MBA admission to a Business School is the big milestone in that direction. Over 3000 B Schools admit more than 5,00,000 aspirants every year in India. But the catch is that aspirants don’t always get picked by the business school of their choice. If you want to be chosen by top management institutes in the country, you need to give yourself an edge over other candidates. It’s a task accomplished by a strong MBA profile that is a cut above the rest.

What are the elements of an MBA profile?

Before you start building an impressive MBA profile, you need to understand its different elements that include:

  • Your academic performance through college, academic achievements, the academic institution you have graduated from.
  • Your co-curricular activities like paper and journal presentations, NTSE, Olympiad score, involvement in student and college clubs.
  • Extracurricular activities and achievements in the fields of singing, dancing, arts, filmmaking, photography, sports, and more.
  • Any positions of responsibility you have held during school and college years, organizing events, leading a project, etc.
  • Your work experience, the duration, role, and responsibilities you have handled, projects what you have been part of.

How does your MBA Profile impact your B School prospects?

There are three significant ways in which your MBA profile can make a powerful case for you with top B Schools in India.

All management institutions in the country have their criteria for admissions. They can change every year but the fact is that top business management colleges have a preference for students, who can showcase diverse all-around abilities. If your MBA profile reflects that then you have a better chance of getting a call from renowned B Schools.

Your MBA profile will be considered closely during the Personal Interview. This is the make-or-break stage for the Business School admission of your choice. Your profile will give the interviewers leads for questions they ask you during the PI, which include your career aspirations etc. You need to be completely honest and well-versed with your profile.

Not many B School students realize this but it is their MBA profile that also influences their summer internship placements. Your first internship will be a few months into your program, which means your resume hasn’t grown much. Recruiters will look at your MBA profile to shortlist you for the roles they offer.

Steps to building a standout MBA profile

  • Not all students have a clearly defined MBA goal when they are in school or early years of college. So you may not have actively worked towards building your profile for an MBA, and that’s perfectly okay. As they say, there is no point in trying to re-do the past when you have a glorious future ahead of you. You still have time to work towards creating an impressive profile with your achievements, interests, and accreditations.
  • Top B Schools have MBA students from varied backgrounds. If you have a background in IT but aspire for a corporate career in finance, then you can do an MBA/PGDM in Finance and send out a clear message through your profile with finance-related certification courses and another diploma in Financial Services.
  • Taking specialized courses in MBA Marketing, Analytics, Finance, etc. never goes amiss with B Schools. And the good news is that they are easy to apply for today. Renowned institutions like Wharton offer them apps like Coursera for your benefit. Or, try Harvard and MIT’s edX!
  • If you are in college, take the initiative to become a part of student organizing committees, cultural activities, and events. It will create that well-rounded personality image that B Schools find appealing.
  • You can also present yourself as a future manager with a strong social conscience and ethics by getting involved in CSR activities, NGO projects, etc. These platforms are a huge learning experience for future MBAs.
  • Working professionals can focus on activities and projects that are aligned with their MBA interests. If you want to build a corporate career in Human Resources then you can highlight your work experience being part of teams and even leading them.
  • Your MBA profile should showcase your passion and intentions as much as your abilities. When you manage to achieve that goal, you can stand out from other applicants and get yourself a seat at the table of top management Colleges in Noida, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Indore in India.
