Jaipuria Noida launches Information Technology Club (iTops) and creates a platform to help students stay with IT

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida recently inaugurated an Information Technology Club for the benefit of its students. Called iTops, the club is another initiative from the B School to offer the best amenities to its students and offer them a comprehensive learning environment. Information technology is obviously an integral part of every management professional’s life in today’s corporate environment, in one way or another, and the club will aim to hone these skills amongst students, preparing them for the challenges that lay ahead.

The big launch of the club took place on the 4th of September, 2014 and it turned out to be a much talked about event. “Technology is a word that describes something that doesn’t work yet,” according to Douglas Adams, the famous writer who fuelled the curiosity for technology with his imagination. And the inaugural event had many young minds from Jaipuria, Noida display these two attributes; curiosity and imagination, in abundance, which definitely is a positive sign for the new club.

Proceedings for the day began with the welcome of Chief Guest Mr. Pankaj Madan, National Marketing Manager and Guest of Honour, Mr. Abhinav Shikawat, Chief Marketing Executive; both from HCL Info system Ltd, a leading name in the industry. Things then started on a bright note with the traditional lighting of the lamp by faculty members, Prof. Durgansh Sharma, Prof. Lalit Sharma and Prof. Richa Misra. Like in the fast paced world of Information Technology, things got underway immediately after as the members of the club were thrust right in the middle of action.

The very first activity of the club was to explore and understand The Power of Micro Blogging. A competition held on this highly relevant topic set the ball rolling as the members of the club were divided into groups of five each. They had to present a blog on some of the most talked about topics in the recent times. The subjects ranged from FIFA Fever on Facebook to Women Empowerment in India, digital marketing to Infrastructural development in the country. Completely charged up with the mission, the participants gave the task their best shot.

Judges comprising the chief guest, the guest of honour and faculty coordinators had a tough time on their hands to select the winner. But finally it was the group that wrote the blog on Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS that won the competition. The bloggers on the topic of FIFA Fever were runners up. As the activities ended on a high, Prof. Richa Misra and Prof. Lalit Sharma presented mementos to the guests. Prof. Durgansh Sharma offered the vote of thanks and urged students to make the most out of the club and take it to greater heights.

But that already seems the agenda for the members of the club, who are thrilled to have the opportunity to come out on iTops. Abhinay Mishra, PGDM 2015 said, “I completely appreciate this initiative taken by our institute and am looking forward to all the learning I can get from it.” Another member of the club was of the opinion that, “Information Technology is the way forward for all professionals and the club will equip us with the latest that will help us in our management careers.” That in itself would be purpose served for an exciting and ambitious club like this one.

“My Favourite Brand” at Jaipuria Indore was about a fun exercise to bring the basics of Branding home

Richa Puri and Prof. Aditi Naidu

An out of the box classroom exercise was held for the students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore recently as it not only worked on their communication skills but made them aware of concepts like brand loyalty and value as well. Organized by the Marketing club of the institute “My Favourite Brand” was an activity that hit the point home with the students as they related their own personal experiences. Thus the initiative served its purpose of helping students understand the importance of users’ connection with brands and marketing aspects involved in the process.

The task in front of the students was fairly straightforward; they had to talk about their favourite brand for two minutes. But as they talked about their love and loyalty for their chosen brand they could see the bigger picture as they realized what consumers look for when they build a bond with a particular brand.

Needless to say, students put their best foot forward during the contest and came up with arguments that were quite becoming of budding management professionals. Vivek Pathak, student of the 2014-16 Batch who spoke about Dettol as his favourite brand was adjudged the winner. “The brand has been used by my family for a long time. Whenever there are cuts and bruises in the family, Dettol is a trusted name,” was his winning reply. His reward for winning the contest was a book on Branding, which he intends to put to good use at the earliest.

Other participants who talked about various brands like Apple, Dove, Red Tape Shoes and more, might not have won a book on the subject but they certainly went back home richer in understanding of branding. They were also awarded Certificates of Participation but it was the huge learning experience this activity offered them that the students cherished the most. The exercise turned out to be a fruitful one also because the participants’ communication skills were called into play and they learned to put their points across in an effective manner.

“They are uneducated, but they are well versed in their job. They are carrying forward a 125 year old system!” Mr. Pawan G. Agarwal, Director Mumbai Dabbawala Education Centre, explained with a smile. He was talking about managing and coordinating the large fleet of dabbawalas in Mumbai. He adds, “For them, work is worship. They are punctual and self-motivated; hence, the job of managing them becomes trouble free”. The interaction took place on the 20th of September, 2014 at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. Mr. Agarwal is hailed as a management guru and international motivational speaker. He has shared his immense insights into supply chain management on various platforms. The session at Jaipuria Lucknow was conducted by CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) and YI (Young Indians). Mr.Pawan G. Agarwal was joined on stage by Mr. Kunwar Himmat Singh (Associate Vice President- Nestle India Limited), Mr. Gaurav Prakash (Chair, Yi Lucknow Chapter), Mr.Divij Narain (Co-chair, Yi Lucknow Chapter and Director Speed Motors Pvt. Ltd), Mr.Alok Shukla (Deputy Director, CII, UP State Office) and Dr. Pankaj Gupta (Director General, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow).

The session began with the guests lighting the ceremonial lamp, invoking Ma Saraswati, the Goddess of Learning. Mr.Vipul V. Gaur, Chair Yi Yuva, Lucknow Chapter, delivered the opening address and invited Jaipuria students to learn from the experienced and knowledgeable guest speaker.

Dabbawala is a person in India, most commonly found in the city of Mumbai, who is employed in a unique service industry. His primary business is collecting freshly cooked food in lunch boxes from the residences of the office workers, delivering it to their respective workplaces and returning the empty boxes back to the customer’s residence by using various modes of transport. The Dabbawalas scripted their own history by a showcase of excellence in customer service for 125 years. They have garnered a lot of global attention from noted personalities, such as Prince Charles and Richard Branson, earned Six Sigma and ISO certification, and, in the process, have become a case study at Harvard Business School.

The Dabbawala Foundation and the Happy Life Welfare Society have now jointly launched a campaign, ‘Share My Dabba’, an initiative to get food left over in dabbas to hungry street children, using just a tiny ‘share sticker’ and the extensive dabbawalanetwork. Every day, 200 thousand children on Mumbai’s streets remain hungry, and every day, 2 of them die of hunger. The Mumbai Dabbawalas deliver 120 tons of food everyday out of which 16 tons is left uneaten. Explaining the initiative, Mr. Agarwal said, “This is where the initiative kicks in. We have distributed a set of stickers that reads ‘share’, with our customers who can stick it on their uneaten dabbas which will then be sorted and shared with the needy.”

Apart from the complicated logistics of delivering dabbas, Mumbai as a city brings with it several challenges like monsoons and public transport. “The dabbawalas”, says Mr. Agarwal, “face every challenge with commitment and enthusiasm. We have a strong determination and for us the ‘Customer is God’, so we try our best to make them happy. Degrees and knowledge are secondary but working passionately is important. Very important. We are not working for Six Sigma but for customer satisfaction. Our main mode of transportation is local trains and still our service remains uninterrupted throughout the year. ” Mr. Agarwal concluded the session with a remarkable suggestion: “Honesty, loving, caring, and being truthful are the qualities not only of a Dabbawalas, but those that should also be practiced by others.”

“Marketing Management is a lot about M-A-N” and Mr. Prabhat Sinha, Zonal Manager, Paiggio Motors Pvt. Ltd. elaborates on it at a session held in Jaipuria Lucknow

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow recently held a Marketing Management session for its students to learn more about the subject and its practical implications. That’s because the venerable Mr. Prabhat Sinha, Zonal Manager (Sales development), Piaggio Motors Pvt. Ltd., led the session held on 6th Sept. Mr. Sinha is an expert in the field with years of experience under his belt, which he enthusiastically shared with the gathering

The session was focussed on Sales Process and Consumer Behaviour in the Automobile Industry. Since Mr. Sinha is a renowned name in the industry, he was just the right person to help students understand various concepts and their practicality and functionality in the real world. Throughout the session, he tried to cover wide ranging topics from the sales process, which includes customer loyalty, customer satisfaction and repeat sales.

As the gathering settled in amidst much anticipation, Mr. Sinha sought to explain some basic ideas related to Marketing Management. According to him, it depends on M-A-N, a term commonly used. “Money, Authority and Need are these factors”, he said at the beginning of his talk. “The biggest challenge is to generate needs in the market”. He then went on to offer effective solutions that professionals in the field can use to resolve most Sales and Marketing issues.

Mr. Sinha stressed that there were four ways to generate enquiries into the market of commercial vehicles. He called them the CORD technique: “C- Counter, O-Outdoor, R-Reference, D-Database.” Through various examples, he tried to help students understand how these techniques and several other concepts of marketing management are applied in the industry, which helped them better understand the CORD techniques application in the business world.

He also focussed on the importance of knowing different types of customers who influence the automobile industry. Elaborating further on that, Mr. Sinha said, “There is one customer who is interested in buying the vehicle but chooses your competitors’ drive. One who doesn’t have any vehicle but has an interest in buying one. Also, one who has no vehicle and absolutely no interest in buying one.” He further offered advice on how to deal with each customer, which is surely something that each prospective employee in the field needs to know.

After offering a basic understanding about customer insight, Mr. Sinha moved on to the Sales Process, breaking it down to simple and relatable terms for students. “Suspecting, prospecting, advice/analysis, negotiation, close and order are the different steps that are involved,” he added. Finally he summed up the session by putting an emphasis on Enquiry Segmentation and Demonstration for the right customers, using an AAI approach of Approach, Awareness and Interaction.

The session itself was a useful interaction with an experienced industry expert as Ayush, PGDM 2016 pointed out. He added, “It was a brilliant opportunity to hear from Mr. Sinha who shared his knowledge in a simple manner, which made it easy for us to understand.”
