FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Lucknow

“Corporate today look for ‘Life-Skills’ more than anything else. That is why HR students should – right from day one – begin by being honest.”

In a free-wheeling chat, two students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow interview Dr. Jaya Chitranshi, Professor of HR. They speak to her about the trends in HR, and what the future holds for them. The two students, Owais Khan and Tuhin Sharma, decided to document their conversation with Dr. Jaya Chitranshi, for the benefit of those who are pursuing HR, as well as aspirants who are preparing for the entrance to Jaipuria Institute of Management.

Owais – Thank you for your time Ma’am.

Professor Chitranshi – (smiles) You are always welcome. Students don’t have to seek my permission for a chat.

Tuhin – Ma’am, there are a lot of reports that HR is the most difficult domain for recruiters, even when they are choosing from the top-most management colleges. Is this correct? If yes, what do the recruiters look for when hiring an HR manager?

Professor Chitranshi – Any recruiters coming to a top B-school like the Jaipuria Institute of Management or the IIMs or ISB, are not really trying to gauge your knowledge; they know that the curriculum and faculty take care of that part. They also know that students of top B-schools like Jaipuria Lucknow are very well groomed and have regular personality development capsules, and have learnt to take that for granted. You see, HR is a domain where a very high level of integrity is needed. Today, the HR department is viewed as a business partner in a company. Therefore, what the corporate is looking for are the ethics, attitude and experience of students. They are looking for ‘life-skills’ more than anything else. That is why HR students should – right from day one – begin by being honest, and be good humans. It is the only way you can be good at your job.

Owais – Yes Ma’am. We often heard you speak about this in class. So, over and above the curriculum at Jaipuria Lucknow, can you guide us on the qualities that newcomers to the HR domain should work on?

Professor Chitranshi – Over and above the ones mentioned above, positive attitude, flexibility and willingness to work on assignments which seem tough are important qualities. Ofcourse, domain knowledge is a must.

Tuhin – Till a few years back, a separate HR department was unheard of, and now it is almost indispensable. In fact, it was looked upon as a comparatively ‘soft’ domain, where women who have family commitments could fit in. How and why is HR becoming increasingly important in organisations?

Professor Chitranshi – A major reason is to be able to measure the value of the ‘hire’. A couple of decades ago, everything was dependent on Certification. Economies and organisations were simpler, and the numbers of higher educational institutions were few and mostly government funded or monitored. Quite a few things happened together. The opening up of the Indian economy coincided with the IT or Knowledge Revolution. The buzzword earlier was ‘production’; now it has become ‘innovation’. Today, certificates are of very little consequence. Organisations are looking for people who are creative, can challenge the status quo and can find new ways of doing things and come up with new products. That is why HR has become so important.

Owais – Thank you Ma’am. That was very insightful. What would be your message to future or aspiring students of Jaipuria Institute of Management who would like to pursue HR?

Professor Chitranshi – Assess yourself well. Don’t join HR because you want to, but because you are built for it. Remember that techniques and strategies taught to you are not the end of the world. Be ready to apply certain basic principles of life, which actually govern the area of HR. Remember that you are dealing with people – be genuine and humane. Only then can you expect them to give you results.

Tuhin – Thank you Ma’am. You are an inspiration for all of us. On my part, I assure you that I will try my best to live up to the expectations of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow.

Alumni Speak Jaipuria Jaipur

Jaipuria Jaipur taught me to perform to the best of my abilities and not worry about the results

Amit Mathur works at the Jaipur branch of the Indian Overseas Bank as an Assistant Manager in the marketing department. This makes him part of Jaipuria Jaipur batch of 2011 alumni body, whose members spread across India. He keeps in touch with his friends via different social networking sites, video chatting, email and of course, phone calls. They support each other by comparing their new jobs and actively discussing growth prospects. A sense of community is not all Amit has retained from Jaipuria. He feels that learning is a continuous process, and Japuria has taught him to perform his best and not think of the result. It has also strengthened his belief that good and hard work pays off. Through a large number of projects at college, be it the NRHM-UNICEF project at Sawai Madhopur, RUIDP project at Jaisalmer, KGK and RSRTC, he got exposure to the latest technology and learning’s. One memory that stands out for him is getting a standing ovation from the director and other members of KIIPL (KGK) for his project, which gave him a great sense of confidence. Amit feels lucky to be able to carry these qualities forward into his professional life.

However, after leaving Jaipuria, Amit learnt a few harsh lessons of professional life. His first company did not give him the exact job profile he wanted, and he had to take the difficult decision to resign in order to join the Indian Overseas Bank. In those moments of despair and frustration, Amit found that he could lean on old teachers like Professor Bhargava, and other classmates. In times like this, he also felt grateful that he had taken a class on Social Responsibility, taught by Dr. Ritu Singh, which made him sensitive to other people’s problems, especially the underprivileged. Even today, he spends time with students of various special schools through some NGOs and tries to bring some joy to their lives by celebrating several occasions with them.

Amit feels as if every moment spent at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur was tremendous for him and that he enjoyed every second spent on campus. He feels it is not only academics in which Jaipuria is far ahead of other institutes, but also in the exposure provided to students in those two years. Another highlight for Amit was when he conducted Association of Asian Pacific Operational Research Societies APORS 2009 under the able guidance and leadership of director Dr. Subhash Dutta. The 5 days of APORS was fabulous for Amit and he worked round the clock to make it a successful event. He met a number of senior officials and researchers who are pioneers in their fields, and learned a lot from them. It is for this, and many other reasons, that he will always look back at his time in Jaipuria with great fondness.

Guneet Ahuja gives a behind-the-scenes look at the formation of the Finance Club at Jaipuria Noida

I am proud to announce that the Finance Club at Jaipuria Noida was inaugurated on the 7th of August, 2012. The Dean, Associate Dean and members of the Finance Club were present for the interactive and energetic first meeting. To kick-start the event, members did a little role-playing, attempting to bring out the role of finance in our day-to-day lives. It was followed by a poem recital, which motivated all the listeners present. I then had the privilege of addressing the Finance Club members and outlining the kinds of activities we could undertake in the coming year. I was also happy to hear many suggestions from those present. Finally, Professor Prabhat Pankaj spoke to the gathering, and his heartfelt words were very encouraging to us.

Now that the inaugural event is over, I can take a moment to express my gratitude to all the people who helped make this happen. As everyone knows, there is always a lot of effort behind the scenes to make any event successful. The name of the club, the logo and the motto has been decided after a lot of deliberations. We have settled on the name ‘Hiranya’, which means wealth. We truly do believe that knowledge enhances our skill-sets and makes us better professionals, and it is for this reason that we have kept our motto – “Shared Knowledge Leads the Way.”

Organisationally, the club will be divided into three central committees, led by Vice Presidents, who will in turn report to the Club President. I am proud to announce that this year’s Club President is Abhishek Pramanik from PDGM (A). The first committee is the External Committee, led by Saransh Garg, PDGM (B), and will look after external activities including guest talks, panel discussions, alumni interactions and other such events. The second committee is the Internal Committee led by Mayuri Datta, PDGM (S), and will look after games, debates and quizzes. The third committee is the Research Committee, which will encourage students to write finance articles, undertake small research projects and produce a newsletter. Umesh Yadav, from PGDM (B), will head this committee.

In the coming year, we are very confident that our Finance Club, Hiranya, will go from strength to strength. However, none of this is possible with the active interest and support of the student body, and for that reason I encourage all of you to come and attend our events, submit your articles and join the Club. After all, knowledge is profitable!

Jaipuria Indore STUDENT Speaks

Aditi Sharma doubles her goals at Jaipuria Indore.

For Aditi Sharma, joining Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore has been a natural step in an already exciting career. Now in her second year, she has chosen a dual specialisation in HR and Finance, with an eye to join the HR department of a renowned company after graduation. Her time at Jaipuria Indore has allowed her to develop and expand her already established love for HR, but in order to achieve greater heights she has also added Finance as her major subject.

Aditi has a Diploma in Aviation, Hospitality and Tourism from the Frankfinn Institute of Air Hostess training. The course helped to hone her skills in the art of client servicing and also gave her exhaustive training in developing communication skills, customer service, safety drills and personality development. Soon after, she was placed with Guest Service Assistance at the Taj Banjara, Hyderabad. Aditi left that position to pursue a Bachelors degree in Tourism from IGNOU, while she worked at Divine Ventures, a travel agency partnered with makemytrip.com.

Aditi’s decision to join Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore was based on its reputation as a leading business school in India and its excellent faculty; she knew this is where she had to go to build on her experience. She has enjoyed being on campus, which she feels is “alive with activities and the hustle-bustle of an academic curriculum”. Aditi really enjoys the extra curricular activities on offer, ranging from sports to cultural, and is actively involved with National Entrepreneurship Network and with operating an evening school in Dakachaya village. Student-driven events like the Business Olympiad, Budget Seminar, Encore, Milan and other events have allowed her to polish her organisational skills, connect with people and have also provided a platform for career opportunities.

But it is her classroom learning that has really inspired Aditi. In particular, she feels that the classes of Professor Dheeraj Mishra and Professor Priti Bakshi have encouraged her to take up finance along with HR. Added to her classes, her internship placement at JUSCO Ltd. in Jamshedpur has helped her develop a deeper understanding of HR deliverables. One of her teachers, Professor Kanak, even visited her during her internship, impressing both Aditi and JUSCO with the seriousness and support given to her by Jaipuria Indore .

Aditi’s experience at Jaipuria Indore has not just been impactful because of the new subjects she has explored, or the inspiring faculty she has met. The teaching methodology has made her understand real life scenarios and her capabilities within those contexts. With regular mock interviews, GD sessions, aptitude tests, extempore debates and quizzes, Aditi feels very prepared to face the eventual job hunt. At the same time, being at Jaipuria Indore has exposed her to E-learning, and through Chisel Programme, she has had the opportunity to interact with key players in industry.

Now, with a renewed sense of confidence instilled in her by a forward-looking institute and on-ground work experience, Aditi is eager to graduate with her double specialisation and join the world of working professionals again. But even as she does, there is no doubt that she is going to miss her time at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore!

FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Indore

“A teacher should not only encourage students to participate, but should give them the confidence to come to the forefront and lead.”

It’s hardly a surprise that Professor Sainy, who has taught marketing and brand management extensively, understood the current trend in educational methods early on. “The learning environment has changed from being teacher-centric to student-centric,” she believes, “and a teacher should not only encourage students to participate, but should give them the confidence to come to the forefront and lead.”

Assistant Professor at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore, which she joined in 2010, Prof Sainy’s credentials are impressive. She holds a Ph.D from Vikram Ujjain (M.P) on ‘The Effect of Service Quality on Customer Loyalty in Retail Outlets.’ This is a subject she has expertise in, having taught facets of marketing over the past 9 years. Her classes have included marketing management, consumer behavior, branding, retail, rural marketing, services marketing, advertising, as well as branding and marketing management.

Wedded to her belief that learning is a continuous process and has no end, Professor Sainy has ensured that she does not rest on her laurels. She has published both research papers and case studies extensively since 2005. Some of her recent work includes ‘A Study of Factors Affecting the Selection of B Schools by Indian Students’ (2010), ‘The Impact of Demographic Variables on Ethical Behaviour of Employees at their Workplace’ (communicated for publication in the South Asian Journal of Management) and ‘A Study of Factors affecting Stock Price Volatility: Perception of Stock Brokers’ (accepted for publication in the Indian Journal of Finance).

In order to keep her work dynamic and original, she regularly attends both seminars and workshops that help her deepen her understanding about how brands interact with customers. This includes keeping abreast of new social media practices, as well as entrepreneurship. If that were not enough, she also coordinates the recruitment process at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore and is the Chair of Student Affairs there. She also serves as Programme Director and member of the institute’s anti-ragging and disciplinary committee.

The secret to a successful tenure is not just in finding the right environment to excel in. Professor Sainy enjoys teaching at Jaipuria Institute because of its “set rules and academic rigour” which she believes helps to give “immense opportunities for grow both as a teacher and researcher”. This enthusiasm is transmitted to her class as well, as she mixes theoretical inputs with industry examples and class discussions. This strategy, she feels, keeps the class motivated, which is immensely gratifying. And in the end, just like the strategies she teaches for keeping products interesting for consumers, Professor Sainy’s constant innovation keeps her classes fresh for her students!

Jaipuria Lucknow STUDENT Speaks

“Being a science student, accounting and finance were new to me. But the faculties, and my batch-mates at Jaipuria Lucknow, helped turn them into my strength.”

“During my first year at Jaipuria Lucknow, I realised that my inclination was more towards Finance subjects. I enjoyed picking up all kinds of information about Finance from the newspapers, TV, Internet or discussions with colleagues at Jaipuria Lucknow. By the end of the first year, I had decided that I would specialise in Finance. Banking became my dream sector.”

In 2011, Jayanti cracked her summer internship with the Union Bank of India regional office, Allahabad. Her project was ‘Assessment of working capital requirement of export finance with special reference to carpet export’.

“My project mentor at Union Bank of India was Mr. Sanjay Narayan, Senior Manager, Credit. Under his guidance, I was able to learn a lot about Banking Finance, which further strengthened my interest and inclination towards Finance. The best part was that if I needed some clarification, I could pick up the phone and call up my faculty guide at Jaipuria Lucknow, regardless of the time of day.”

This summer internship played a major role in grooming Jayanti for the banking sector; not just in terms of knowledge about finance, but practical exposure to the sector as well. It prepared her well for the placement season in Jaipuria Lucknow, especially her interview with Oriental Bank of Commerce.

“The interview panel initially asked me to introduce myself and there were some questions regarding my family and educational background. This made me quite comfortable with the interview. Then, there were some questions on finance subjects, but very soon the interview turned into a discussion on my summer training project. Once this happened, I was able to take the interview to a desirable conclusion.”

Jayanti believes that ‘being confident’ is the mantra for facing any interview. She feels that the placement process is a mix of success and failures; patience and determination is necessary to succeed. Ultimately, hard work always pays.

“Being a Science student, Accounting and Finance were new to me. I did face some difficulties but gradually, with the help of faculty, the well-managed teaching pattern and my batch-mates at Jaipuria Lucknow, I was able to turn these subjects into my strength. During the placements, extra classes were conducted to align us with the expectations of the industry, which proved to be very useful.”

Jayanti believes that life in Jaipuria Lucknow is absolutely amazing; she feels it has completely shaped her professional path as well as her personality. She fondly remembers Talaash, a fest which is more like a talent hunt from among the first year students. Over her two years at Jaipuria Lucknow, she participated in numerous events, and won the 2nd prize in badminton. As a member of the alumni committee of Jaipuria Lucknow, she had the privilege of coordinating alumni meets for various chapters.

All in all, Jayanti is very happy with the decision she made about studying here at Jaipuria Lucknow.

Jaipuria Jaipur Placement Update

“My two wonderful years at Jaipuria Jaipur ended on a high note, with a good placement and package!”

Garima Mathur, who recently graduated from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur has just joined Genpact as a Management Trainee and is working with the coveted Capital Market Group within Genpact. As Garima herself acknowledges, getting into this group within Genpact is really tough.

“Placement season started in Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur in November 2011. Every year, Genpact is the first company that comes for recruitment to Jaipuria Jaipur. Luckily, we had been prepared beforehand, through presentations in our college, to make us aware of the various Companies coming for recruitment. The interactions with the alumni also helped a lot.”

Garima was focusing on Genpact, as she felt it was a great starting point for a career in Finance.

“Marketing never interested me. Genpact being the first company on campus, everyone who wanted a Finance profile was trying to crack it. I was tense, yet confident; Finance, after all, is my strength.”

The Genpact recruitment process was divided into two rounds. Only those who cleared the GD round were called for a face-to-face interview.

“My interview went on for an hour. I was asked many questions relating to accounting, cases, and Genpact as an organisation.”

Since Jaipuria Institute of Management has a centralised placement system for all its campuses, quite a few of the recruitments were in Jaipuria Noida. Having cracked Genpact, Garima Mathur looked no further, and was spared all the travelling around.

“During the placement season, there were numerous exercises organised by Jaipuria Jaipur – preparing separate CVs for different companies and profiles, mock GDs and mock interviews. The faculty was rigorously involved in preparing the students, right down to giving feedback on our performance, where we lack, what we have to prepare. Sometimes prominent professionals from the corporate world were invited to our college to take mock GDs and interviews. Guest lectures from these experienced professionals really helped us know more about the real corporate world before we faced the recruitment process.”

No wonder Garima feels that, with a good placement and package, her two wonderful years at Jaipuria Jaipur ended on a high note!

Mugdha Ahluwalia from Jaipuria Noida batch of 2012-2014, looks back at her first month in the institute.

When one decides to enrol for a PGDM programme, one doesn’t really think about how tough life can get! From day one, life at Jaipuria Noida has been both challenging and amazing. Lot of things are happening all around me and I am having the time of my life. It’s been one month at Jaipuria Noida and the time has really flown. If you ask me, the moments that stand out for me on campus are when it is a beautiful rain- soaked evening, I have a cup of coffee in one hand and case studies in the other. Studying may not seem like the most fun activity to a casual observer, but even academics become fun in Jaipuria Noida.

It has been a roller coaster ride, one that has come with a huge learning curve. Every day, I get to learn from my professors and peers. Lectures are very creative here. Working in teams on projects and on various assignments helped me understand team dynamics better, especially when stringent deadlines had to be met. The first thing I learned here is ‘Time Management’, the single most important skill required when doing a PGDM.

Jaipuria Noida is a special blend of a modern life and traditional values. It is an enriching experience here, where emphasis is laid on our overall grooming. Despite the demanding academic schedule, I spend time playing sports and improving my communication skills, something that ensures that each day is delightfully full of activity. We have many clubs to keep us going: Music, Literary, Dance, Media Relations, Debate, E-cell and Dramatics are the ones that top the charts.

On the other hand, we have academic clubs too – like HR, Finance, Marketing, Operations, etc.

All these are a part of life for me already and I could go on about them, as there are so many events taking place on campus. However, I’ll stop typing and head off to push myself further towards perfection.
