With more than 35 years of multi-functional corporate experience, Professor S.P. Garg is regarded as a great asset to Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur. Professor S.P. Garg has had some spectacular assignments in the corporate world, such as AGM, New York office, and Chief Executive of Fiji territory at the Bank of Baroda. Even during his corporate stint, Professor Garg always had a passion for teaching. He had various instructional assignments for educating young managers while at Bank of Baroda, including that of the Principal of Bank of Baroda Staff College for Regional Rural Banks, in Lucknow, from 1982 to 1985.

“After superannuation in 2009, I decided to cherish this passion for teaching and joined Jaipuria Jaipur as full-time faculty. So far, I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. I teach students from the point of view of their employability and career growth in the corporate world. This requires a lot of creativity and enthusiasm.”

Professor Garg’s areas of core competence in teaching are Banking, Strategy Management, International Business and Corporate Governance. He does not believe in touching subjects, which he does not feel passionately about, as he believes that passion is the most important ingredient in teaching.

“I strongly believe that students must be provided with skills to handle real-life situations. This is the persistent demand from industry, as has been highlighted at various forums. I have been a student of great management gurus like Ravi Mathai, Samuel Paul, Ishwar Dayal, K.K.S. Chauhan and Kamla Chaudhari. Just like them, my philosophy is to ‘make teaching relevant, purposeful and rewarding’. The case study method, taught to me by the Father of case study pedagogy, Professor Vora, at IIM (A) is my real application in Jaipuria Jaipur.”

Apart from a being a Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB), Professor Garg’s academic background lies entirely in the field of Agricultural Sciences. This includes a Post Graduation in Agricultural Sciences and Programme for Agri-Business Management from IIM Ahmedabad. His multi-faceted background makes him capable of handling a variety of roles at Jaipuria Jaipur – from Chairperson, MDP, Training and Consultancy Centre (Executive Education) to Chairperson of the Disciplinary Committee.

“I am happy that the corporate management and the Director of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur entrust me with responsibilities besides teaching. I have also been entrusted with the task of organising the flagship ‘3rd National Workshop on Export –Import and Forex Mechanism’, some time in Nov-Dec 2012. ‘Jaipuria Jaipur Thought Leadership Lecture Series’ is also something that I oversee. These lectures are a great value addition to ‘Brand Jaipuria’ and a real contribution to society. Dr. V. S. Vyas, an eminent economist, and 2nd lecture by Dr. Anil K. Khandelwal, a transformational leader, delivered the inaugural lecture. I was delighted with the encouraging response and the appreciation.”

Professor Garg believes that every single class should be organised with a clear-cut purpose for both student and teacher. That being said, he is also involved in the all-round development of his students at Jaipuria Jaipur.

“Nothing is more delightful to me than alumni of Jaipuria Jaipur seeking my advice and guidance. I often receive emails or calls on aspects of promotion, change of jobs and also on how to handle day-to-day operational problems. It gives me the confidence that my involvement with students is on the right track.”

Nowadays, Professor Garg is fascinated with new learnings in the field of Strategy Management and the latest approaches adopted by organisations. A nature lover, he also uses his spare time visiting religious places and reading turnaround success stories of organiations and leaders. All this helps him motivate his students at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur as well.
