The newly appointed Dr. Dayanand Pandey, Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida shares his plan to make the B School a global force

In the last few years, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida has cemented its place as one of the top B Schools in North India. Stunning placement record, strong faculty, and alumni pool are just some of the factors behind its meteoric rise. It has been keeping no stone unturned in its endeavor to evolve continuously so that its students keep up with the latest industry demands. And now the B School aims to explore new territories with its new Director, Dr. Dayanand Pandey set on building an even stronger global connect than before. With certification programs from London and Switzerland under his belt and teaching stints in India as well as Dubai, he has focused on helping the B School achieve his global ambitions. We find out about his plans in this interview.

A Cutting-edge curriculum for industry-ready students cannot be underestimated

Dr. Pandey brings over two decades of experience in industry and academia to Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. He has seen rapid changes in the industry first hand, especially as the professor of Finance. He believes that if the curriculum doesn’t imbibe the changes, students would be at a serious disadvantage. “As the Director I would like to see how our curriculum can reflect the paradigm changes in the industry. I would also like the curriculum to have a global connect because then we will be able to do students’ profile the justice it truly deserves,” he says strongly.

Strengthening the faculty pool stands among Dr. Pandey’s top to-dos

At Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida Dr. Pandey wants to continue teaching students sharing his experience with them. He realizes the importance of having a strong faculty team to help the B School achieve its goals. While he reminds us that with around 40 faculty members for about 600 students, the faculty team remains strong, he wants to keep enhancing it continuously. “I am trying to create more space for research faculty as it will add to the intellectual base of the institute. Hiring will be a continuous process and I will keep building this valuable resource of the B School,” he adds.

Expect global expansion by leaps ad bounds

Having worked in different countries and global environments, Dr. Pandey is aware that today’s managers should be able to work in multicultural setups. With student and faculty exchange programs, getting International corporate professionals on the campus, he wants to realize the global vision. “I want to make sure that Jaipuria, Noida is connected with the best corporate companies and campuses all over the world. I want the results to show in student intake and placements as well. While our placement record is excellent, it will be good to see more foreign recruiters. So I will look to tap into markets like Dubai, Singapore, and Hong Kong,” he reveals.

A major emphasis on holistic growth

Dr. Pandey strongly believes that having in-depth knowledge of a subject can’t be the only value addition to managers of tomorrow. They need to be strong personalities, who can express themselves in the best possible way. He plans to launch more initiatives for the overall growth of students. “I will always encourage my students to participate in various kinds of activities like debates, case studies, music, sports, drama, and more. At the same time, I want to imbibe values into the students because I think success without ethics can be hollow. One has to look at the long-term roadmap for future managers,” he adds thoughtfully.

And that’s something Dr. Pandey definitely seems to have in place. He believes in giving freedom to his faculty members and students, who will be encouraged to walk in for meetings with him whenever needed. With his experience, global vision, and the open-door policy for feedback he will undoubtedly be opening new doors of success for Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida.

How Social Media & Google Search Can help (or Hurt) you in Job Hunt

Are you out of work? You have to hunt out for job now/ Have to change your job. The first thing that comes to mind when you are looking for a new job is putting together a good CV. Yes, you are thinking absolutely right. But this has today become little old-fashioned. Today internet is quite popular with job seekers. In the earlier days, an only way to know about the candidate for interviewer was to read the piece of paper written by the candidate himself called CV aka Resume aka Curriculum Vitae.

A CV used to be a piece of paper- essentially but played a very vital role in deciding a candidate’s destiny. This paper acted as a guessing piece for prospective employers to know your past, present and identify how as an employee you would turn out in future.

It has been quite some time that the new CV is in the town called – Google. All one needs to do is type your name into search engine of Google, and alas what you see if you are anywhere closer to internet which is likely to be… be it FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, your past and present employers sites or any other world of online media much about this can be visible (based on your privacy controls) and they know about your virtual life in and out. Ironically statistics proves that across the globe 35 % to 66 % people are rejected by employers based on findings through Google about them. The causes of rejection can be anything from bad grammar to spell errors, obscene language to bad words for previous employer, or it can be any incongruous content. At the same time your Google presence creatively; impressive network and demonstrated professionalism ay help you to fetch the job very easily.

Are you zapped? So was I. when I thought about it. Today we just cannot imagine our life without Google. Here’s a small piece of advice for all young aspirants to manage their Google CV well. You can oversee your Google search, Fill in your details completely wherever possible, and magnify your online presence.

1. Oversee

Sketch your own personality. The one you would like to be drawn to your prospective employer. The list of adjectives that add acclaim to yourself needs to be identified. It can vary from being professional to disciplined and hardworking; confident to well connected; trustworthy to cheerful disposition just to name a few. Once you have made up your mind, Go and Google yourself. Go to all the possible pages that are visible on first 50 or 100 searches and edit / delete anything that you may feel contradicts the image you wish to carry out. If you find something contradictory, and you don’t know how to remove the same, use again Google for it. Google definitely had answers for your complicated queries and step by step instructions to follow. Be 100 percent assured that you are the only one who needed this, there are many more earlier than you have already had similar doubts. Pick the latest ones from the search options and follow the same.

2. Fill In

For this piece of portion I advise fill the fill in the blanks wherever possible, even the bullet points, sub points. I mean to say, fill in every minute details possible, until and unless you got solid reason to leave them blank. On sites like LinkedIn, Twitter definitely ensure that you fill it completely and keep it updated, since an outdated profile will only make you unprofessional.

3. Magnify it

How one can increase his virtual aura is important to note. There are several ways to do it.

Blogs: Today people right about themselves, their own thoughts, comments about the world’s latest happenings. If you don’t have one, its ok, start one today based on the expertise you carry and keep updating it on regular basis. Still don’t know how to go about it – again guru mantra is go Google it. There are over 200 million blogs in the world; all one needs to do is to find out how to avoid the identity crisis. Employers generally prefer to see concrete and expert opinions on your blogs rather than philosophical writings.

Twitter: for some writing in 25 words is in thing. Blogs have become outdated for them. Texting and tweeting have become so popular that if you go for it, brevity becomes your identified skill.

YouTube Videos: Many prospective employers wish to see your presentation videos. Use your smartphone to get some videos clicked for you and create your repository on YouTube. You may use various other options available on the internet, but YouTube is the best one that can be utilized.

Forums: the organized groups on the subject matter are formed on the internet and are available on various social networks are the right places to be in. Join the one that fits you apply and where you can speak up on regular basis and demonstrate that you are an expert in the subject/ area.it is a wise decision to get noticed as a specialist through these forums.

After this one can really feel that he/she already had a resume which is just a click away and Googling really going to be an important decision-making attribute.

Four FMCG Marketing Trends That Will Rule 2018

Students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, which is one of the top b schools in Indore, delved into n insightful study on game-changing trends in the FMCG domain. 2018 seems like a sunny year for FMCG companies. How?

Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector in India has grown from USD 31.6 billion in 2011 to USD 49 billion in 2016. In the last quarter of 2017, the revenue in the sector grew by a whopping 17%. Predicted growth suggests that the FMCG sector will reach dizzying heights of USD 103.7 billion in 2020. Clearly, there is a lot to play for in the sector for businesses and brands; especially for the ones who want to win over the fast-growing consumer.

An interesting facet of the Indian market is that the rural segment contributes around 60% of the market share. Over the next ten years, the revenue for FMCG in the segment is set to grow ten times. Yes, ten times! So, what does it take to woo the dynamic Indian consumer? How can professionals who are making their way into the industry know the pulse of their audience? Here’s looking at the top FMCG Marketing Trends for the year 2018.

It’s important to realize that food fads are fickle, but trends in the industry have a longer shelf life. They are driven by social, cultural, and political factors, and they go on to dictate the marketing strategies for FMCG brands- in every possible way. Keeping a tab on the trends allows managers in the field to devise, and improvise strategies to good effect.

Health and wellness to get their due

HealthThere is a growing awareness amongst the consumers about their well-being. People are increasingly taking their health seriously but fast-paced lives make their tasks difficult. For brands to make an impact, they will have to offer health benefits on a platter and suited to consumers’ convenience. With the launch of wellness brands and products catered to users’ lifestyles, the focus will be on their usability and convenience.

Personalization is the key

POINT 2Consumers are already asking, ‘what’s in it for ME?’, and the emphasis on the “Me” is only growing further each passing day. Personalization is the way forward for FMCG brands. Yes, the strategy comes with a cost but also has immense benefits as it offers brands insight into consumer behavior. In 2018, you will see FMCG marketing gurus coming up with novel ways to ensure that their brands have a consumer-specific impact.

Experiential marketing leads the way

PONT 3Millennials and Gen Z consumers are growing in numbers, and with them, they bring their unique demands out of FMCG products. A recent study showed that they are keener on experiences rather than the product so that they can be shared on various social media platforms. Online marketing is definitely the way to tap into this audience, but in 2018 brands will have to emphasize experience sharing to attract consumer attention.

Broader perspective

POINT 4Today’s consumer is getting more discerning than ever and is looking at the bigger picture. Socially conscious products and sustainability are going to be the buzzwords in the FMCG market in 2018. The impact is being seen in India as well and brands will have to make a point of reminding audiences of the exotic elements in their products, craftsmanship, planet-friendly manufacturing, etc. Marketing moves will have to be directed to appeal to the conscience as well.

With consumer behavior evolving at a fast pace, brands have to keep up with the marketing trends that will have their sway in 2018. And what is Jaipuria Institute of Management doing to keep their PGDM courses graduates up to date in this frenzied world of Change?

This best B-school in India fosters a very Research-centric, practice-based approach in its Marketing department. Leading practitioners and academicians deliver the course. From Prof. B.D. Jaipuria Indore Placement Update

From Jaipur to Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore and now, to Emami India

Jaipur to Jaipuria, Indore and now, to Emami- the Indian Conglomerate Company headquartered in Kolkata

Ashish was sure he would make it to Emami. There was absolutely no speck of doubt in his heart. While he stood outside the Personal Interview room waiting for his turn with the senior professionals of the company, all he could think was “I have cracked it already,” and he was not even done with the final round. Such is the power of confidence and why wouldn’t he be! “After the kind of training we are exposed to at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore, we learn to withstand stress and steam- no matter the situation,” says the PGDM student of Class 2018 of the B-school.

Ashish arrived at the Jaipuria, Indore campus in the year 2016 with hopes of a promising future. When Emami happened to him, the Jaipur boy was happy beyond words. However, now that he looks back, “it wasn’t all a cake walk.” In fact, to make it to the Indian conglomerate headquartered in Kolkata, Ashish had to face his shares of hardship. After his rejection from TATA Motors Finance, he was taken aback. He had prepared for everything but hadn’t quite imagined the initial hiccups that life could offer. “I was taken aback when I couldn’t make through the GD of TATA Motors Finance. I was prepared every bit, however, I kept my focus right,” and eventually, Emami happened.

Ashish had to clear two critical rounds with Emami. The first was his favorite- Group Discussion round. “It was meant to analyse our Psychometrics and the Personal Interview followed. The PI tested our situational and technical knowledge,” and once he received the news of his placements in Emami’s Sales and Distribution team, he couldn’t thank his two years old decision of doing a MBA enough. “I saw my PGDM help me evolve as a more confident and outgoing human being. In fact, my summer internship with Pladis Global acted as a cherry on the icing,” explains Ashish.

He spent 75 days of his summer in the year 2017 at the leading biscuit, chocolate, confectionary company- Pladis. Immersed in a global professional set up, sales and logistics, Ashish gained a lot of insiders’ views on how to unfurl and project products to a broader target audience in the market- for real. He worked closely, day in and out with senior professionals of Pladis and gathered knowledge where he could see classroom PGDM theories, getting practiced to help brands connect to a wider set of audience. “The HR of Emami took a lot of interest in my internship and asked me series of questions around it,” says Ashish while explaining the importance of professional summer stints. “I was selling Pladis’ products in 47 degrees Celsius- under the scorching sun of Rajasthan”- needless to say, experiences such as these can’t (or, let’s say- don’t) go to waste, ever.

Ashish is now all set to join Emami- the 25,000+ employees’ company; the pioneer of the beauty and fairness cream industry of India.

Prof. Masood Siddiqui of Jaipuria, Lucknow, making PGDM classroom sessions way more insightful

An undying quest for knowledge has Prof. Masood Siddiqui of Jaipuria, Lucknow complete 25 research papers, making PGDM classroom sessions way more insightful.

Whenever you ask students about Prof. Masood Siddiqui of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow, you have them all unanimously agree “he is an academician you would never be bored of.” Indeed, once you speak to him, you would be thrilled by the kind of knowledge and insights he brings to even ordinary discussions. The man with around 25 research papers in his name and more than 230 citations (8 h-index & 7 i-10 index) under his belt, we asked him “do you remember the first research paper you ever wrote?”

It was the year 2006, right after Prof. Masood had entered Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow as a Professor in Decision Science & Operations. He had attended numerous research conferences. However, he wasn’t convinced if he was ready to formulate a paper together. With encouragement coming his way from the former director of Jaipuria, Lucknow Prof. Subrata Chakrabarty, Prof. Masood developed his first paper ever- “SODA and Cognitive Mapping-A Paradigm Shift” and it immediately got published. What a day! Since then, of course there has been no stopping this academician.

With a smile on his face, almost always, Prof. Masood is known for his amiable behavior and interpersonal skills. You would often see him engaged in insightful conversations with groups of students in the corridor post classroom sessions. His teaching technique is considered highly interactive by the PGDM natives of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. Especially because he draws heavily from his research work and tries to back theories with meaningful findings. For instance, at the latest Management Science/ Operations Research session, he taught the students how to incorporate qualitative parts (human feelings, conflicts, motivations, etc. in quantitative operations research models. Needless to say, where does he get to bring these dimensions in the otherwise theory-driven PGDM course sessions? Of course, from the extensive researches, he conducts whenever he manages time.

“Well, it does get difficult sometimes to balance time. Honestly, I don’t think that I get to give optimum time for the research activities with classes and academic-administrative responsibilities. But I try using all spare minutes and oftentimes, night hours whenever I feel driven,” answers Prof. Siddiqui when asked about time and day management. However, to some curious minds such as his, these things almost come naturally.

He started his teaching career in the Dept. of Statistics, the University of Lucknow after qualifying CSIR-UGC JRF-NET Exam in 1994 since it was mandatory to take classes as a Junior Research Fellow during those days. Then he joined U. P. Govt. for three years (1996-99) and returned back to academics with the joining of Lucknow Christian P. G. College in 1999 as Lecturer in Dept of Statistics. It didn’t end there. Prof. Masood says, “I also took up assignment as Visiting Faculty to a number of management courses including Dept of Business Administration, University of Lucknow. I joined Jaipuria, Lucknow in 2005 as Senior Lecturer and here I am, 12+ years in pursuit of more education.”

So in what ways did the B-school help, Prof. Masood Siddiqui of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow stay on top of his research work? “Research incentives, seed grants, infrastructure support, organizing research workshops, etc. are part of the Jaipuria functions, therefore, faculty are provided with a very conducive environment to continue their quest for knowledge,” elaborates Prof. Siddique before closing the conversation.

What did Dr. Ashish Chandra, Professor of Healthcare Administration, College of Business University of Houston – Clear Lakes, US do differently in the Jaipuria classroom ?

What did Dr. Ashish Chandra, Professor of Healthcare Administration, College of Business University of Houston – Clear Lakes, US do differently in the Jaipuria classroom?

The fact that Jaipuria Institute of Management has a rich and diverse faculty pool is well known. But the B School doesn’t rest on these pillars of its strength. To ensure that its students get global exposure, the B-school invites reputed International faculty members to deliver classroom sessions for its PGDM students. Recently, Dr. Ashish Chandra, Professor of Healthcare Administration, College of Business University of Houston, Clear Lakes, US delivered sessions on Marketing and OB across its campuses. For many, he is the final word in Healthcare Administration. We spoke to him about his passion for teaching and discovered the classroom strategies that make him a much sought-after faculty, world over.

Finding his calling in the US

A post-grad in Computer Science Applications from Banaras Hindu University, Dr. Chandra went to the US to do his MBA in pursuit of a lucrative career. It was during his stint in the US when he was assigned a teaching assistantship in a classroom that he realized his true passion. The MBA and Ph.D. in Social and Administrative Sciences / Healthcare Administration never looked back. “I didn’t know how much fun I would have teaching and realized that it was just perfect for me. I did some healthcare and marketing research projects for my Ph.D. and developed my niche. I also enjoy being an academic because I love the research aspect of it,” he says.

Developing his passion into his forte

Dr. Chandra has over two decades of university-level teaching experience in the US. He admits that management classrooms have evolved over the years and thus have his teaching strategies as well. He doesn’t believe in putting up PPT slides in the classroom because students can read them on their own. His approach is more discussion-driven. “Classroom discussions get students out of their comfort zone, which needs to happen for their future careers. Secondly, you need to offer them examples that they can relate to, otherwise, they will lose interest. Like at Jaipuria Institute of Management I have given examples in Indian context and that works,” he explains.

Deriving satisfaction from teaching

Worked, it certainly did. Dr. Chandra was a hit with the B School students and he believes that they wished he would come back for future courses was his biggest reward. He recounts his experience where he had to adapt his teaching techniques based on classroom size across campuses, as challenging but satisfying at the same time. “I am someone who believes that our biggest resources are not just faculty members. I value collaboration with students and look for opportunities to work with them on research projects, etc. Learning is a two-way street and there are a lot of gains from collaborative work for students and faculty members alike,” he says wisely.

Dr. Ashish Chandra, all the way from University of Houston

Dr. Ashish Chandra, all the way from University of Houston, for guiding Jaipuria Institute of Management students through college dynamics, placement goals, and early career stages

When an International faculty visits your campus, you pick his brains about global roles for future managers, demands of the industry and tips to make yourself stand apart. And Dr. Ashish Chandra is not just another faculty member from a foreign university. The winner of the Outstanding Professor Award given by the University of Houston – Clear Lake Alumni Association in 2015, he is clearly a favorite with his students. With over 20 years of teaching experience and more than 75 research papers under his belt, the marketing expert with a niche in Healthcare Management, he is just the right person to give future managers a roadmap of what lies ahead.

Prepare for the future smartly

Dr. Chandra was at Jaipuria Institute of Management recently conducting a course on Marketing and OB. He brought his vast experience to the table as he offered students valuable insights about markets abroad and how they can prepare themselves for global manager roles. He also had some practical advice for students when he said, “Three years from now you won’t be working with the people sitting next to you right now. But at the end of the program, when you are looking for placements, they will be your biggest competition. The key is to grow into an environment of healthy competition while finding your own identity.”

Important attributes to impress future employers

Dr. Chandra has the same rationale when it comes to teamwork. He asserts that for college projects students should be thrown into diverse teams because that will be the scenario for them in a professional setup. Your future employers want to know whether you can work in a team that you have not picked for yourself. “Besides being a team player, you need to be flexible. How mobile you are willing to be can go a long way in determining your value in the world of Marketing. Your communication skills are crucial too because sometimes you need to be an educator for commercials. You need to educate your audience about the products,” he says.

How to navigate through initial career stages

Over the course of two decades, Dr. Chandra has seen many young graduates go on to build successful careers. But he asserts that students cannot expect to be completely happy as soon as they get their hands on the Marketing degree. He believes young graduates need to have a passion for what they do, and they can’t realize whether they fit in till they start working. “You have to know that the first few jobs will be rough, and no job is perfect anyway. As marketing professionals, you have to go out there and experience things. Don’t quit because you don’t like a job; the gap in your CV reflects badly. Every experience counts,” he adds on a profound note.

He was delighted to declare that Jaipuria Indore has been excelling not only with student growth and development, but instrumental in the progress of the nearby villages and the city of Indore at large. Through industry-academic partnerships, the Institute is fast emerging on its own a center for promoting inclusive growth in the region. In spite of it being the very first batch of the Institute, the placements have been fantastic, with 65% students already suitably placed, and rest are expected to be placed shortly. Some of our recruiters are TV 18 (CNBC Awaaz), ICICI Securities, India Bulls, Polyplex, Uttam Galva Steel, WNS Global Services, Laurent and Benon, Tata McGraw Hill, Remorphing, India Mart Intermesh, Entrepreneur India etc. The Director was glad to share that the quality of summer placement this year was also much superior, with all 100 students of the Class of 2014 having found divergent SIPs.

Dr Upadhyay affectionately addressed the graduating students saying “I extend my hearty congratulations to you, the graduating students and am confident that your attitude of cooperation, flexibility, and readily taking up responsibility will give you a distinct edge in your career. I wish you all the very best for your future endeavors. May God bless you!”

Thereafter, awards were given to the deserving students for their outstanding academic achievements. The Chairman’s Gold Medal was awarded to Ms. Aditi Sharma, Vice Chairman’s Silver Medal to Mr. Anurag Srivastava and Director’s Bronze Medal to Ms. Juhi Sharma. Ms. Aditi Sharma was also the topper for Financial Management and Human Resource Management, whilst Mr. Anurag Srivastava bagged the Marketing Management accolade.

Shri Shreevats Jaipuria, Vice Chairman of the Jaipuria Group gave the vote of thanks. He injected a spirit of triumph and hope in the students, saying “Even though this foundation includes technical knowledge of academic subjects, I hope you will realize that academics are only part of your learning here. As important if not more, is to develop a mindset for continuous learning. Even as there will be no examinations and quizzes anymore, you will be required to learn and relearn from real life situations every day. And again , this learning will not be restricted to finance formulae, and marketing techniques, but will require you to understand and manage people, their fear, their needs and their aspirations above all else”. He thanked all who were present for the occasion.

After the grand convocation ceremony, Mr Ramesh Agarwal’s feedback spoke volumes about the strides Jaipuria, Indore has made in a short span of time saying “I congratulate you, Jaipuria- Indore, on the outstanding success of the convocation, and the last two academic years. It was a real privilege to get to know your unique institution and the complete dedication the management shows for every student’s development”.

The Convocation Ceremony was an emotional moment for the family members of the students as their loved ones went on stage to receive their certificates. The gathering then proceeded for a group photograph and followed by lunch.
