Quality management graduates will see a very high demand over a short term in the next few years, says Dr. Harshavardhan Halve, Director Jaipuria Indore

As a young Asst. Professor with Jabalpur Univesity – also known as Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya, Dr. Harshavardhan Halve was asked if he could take on the task of designing absolutely new computer courses – vocational and Post Graduate Program – in the university. This was the mid-nineties and a Diploma in interdisciplinary areas comprising computer and management was rather new to the Indian context. When he accepted the challenge, little did Dr. Halve know that it would be a defining moment of his career. Not only did he go on to introduce these course in Jabalpur University; the PG Diploma in Computer Management became the first programme in Jabalpur where 60% students were placed.

“I started this program with the aim to narrow the gap between demand and supply of talent,” recalls Dr. Harshavardhan Halve, who has just taken over as the Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management Indore. “For an academician, working for professional education it is essential to gauge market needs in terms of skilled manpower and try to develop new courses to cultivate skills in the aspirants. For example in IT industry the need for business analysts is increasing, as the challenges of expanding markets are increasing. That was the reason of developing a course to enhance skills in the area of business analysis.”

Ever since, Dr. Harshavardhan Halve has earned a name for alligning courses and colleges to industry. As a result, whichever institution he has served, has seen a marked improvement in placements; both in quality and quantity.At SPJIMR, Dr. Halve managed the Master’s in IT program with Virgina Tech, while during his 8-and-half year tenure at IMT, Nagpur, there was hardly any aspect of campus administration that he hadn’t combined with his academic responsibilities.

“Theory and practical are two parallel linesthat don’t often seem to meet each other. Therefore you have to practice the art of alligning them to each other. Academics and Administration are a similar combination and one needs to learn skills of both sides by practicing it simultaneously.”

It is probably for this ability that Dr. Harshavardhan Halve has been singled out to steer Jaipuria Indore.

“Jaipuria Indore is the only campus in Indore which has a national presence,” says Dr. Halve, throwing light on his areas of focus as the Head of the youngest Jaipuria campus.“It boasts of being one of the most modern facilities in the zone. None of the nationally known brands have a presencein Indore. For a PGDM campus, 5 major parameters observed globally – infrastructure and living experience, industry interface, intellectual capital, pedagogy and placements. Take a look around and you’ll see that Jaipuria Indore campus is at par with best B-Schools in India. The only requirement is to communicate this to the community. We want to position ourselves as one of the top B-school of central India and we have already started working towards it.”

Dr. Halve comes to Jaipuria Institute of Management Indore, directly from Goa Institute of Management, where he was the Professor – POM/ IT.

“This shift will give me a chance to own full administrative activity and responsibility. It provides me with the challenge to grow with a national B-school.”

Dr. Halve believes that India has come a full circle. While many view the upswing in the market for core Engineers, Dr. Halve feels that it is only to the advantage of focussed Management professionals.

“In early 90’s India started globalization and privatization and began opening its market to the world. This increased the concept of automation and led to a huge demand for Engineers, IT professionals and MCA’s. In the next decade, the challenges shifted towards effective administration; and hence the unprecedented demand for MBA’s. The market did slow down owing to the global phenomena and now that it is picking up again, it is clearly inclined in favour of innovation and innovative services industry grooming, like Whatsapp, Flipkart, Google, etc. This has again created a need for skilled Engineers and IT professionals. It is for this reason that Engineers and IT professional are shifting to their core education.Yet, the need to manage these industries require far more efficient and effective managers.”

Dr. Halve pinpoints that the demand will be balanced in coming years for both Core Engineering and Management. This in turn, indicates that the management spectrum is due to see a bull run in the short term.

“My Favourite Brand” at Jaipuria Indore was about a fun exercise to bring the basics of Branding home

An out of the box classroom exercise was held for the students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore recently as it not only worked on their communication skills but made them aware of concepts like brand loyalty and value as well. Organized by the Marketing club of the institute “My Favourite Brand” was an activity that hit the point home with the students as they related their own personal experiences. Thus the initiative served its purpose of helping students understand the importance of users’ connection with brands and marketing aspects involved in the process.

The task in front of the students was fairly straightforward; they had to talk about their favourite brand for two minutes. But as they talked about their love and loyalty for their chosen brand they could see the bigger picture as they realized what consumers look for when they build a bond with a particular brand.

Needless to say, students put their best foot forward during the contest and came up with arguments that were quite becoming of budding management professionals. Vivek Pathak, student of the 2014-16 Batch who spoke about Dettol as his favourite brand was adjudged the winner. “The brand has been used by my family for a long time. Whenever there are cuts and bruises in the family, Dettol is a trusted name,” was his winning reply. His reward for winning the contest was a book on Branding, which he intends to put to good use at the earliest.

Other participants who talked about various brands like Apple, Dove, Red Tape Shoes and more, might not have won a book on the subject but they certainly went back home richer in understanding of branding. They were also awarded Certificates of Participation but it was the huge learning experience this activity offered them that the students cherished the most. The exercise turned out to be a fruitful one also because the participants’ communication skills were called into play and they learned to put their points across in an effective manner.

“The reputation of Jaipuria Institute of Management precedes itself,” says Richa Puri who hopes to add value to its sterling brand image.

I was pursuing my degree from Bhopal when I heard about Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore. I knew it was a relatively new institute but ever since its inception, the school’s reputation has been growing by leaps and bounds. From my friends to kins, everyone was talking about the new Jaipuria campus of Indore and the quality of education that it has been delivering to its students. When I visited the campus, I instantly made up my mind that this was the institute where I would follow my management aspirations.

The campus made me feel at home. It has been 18 days since I have come here but I have not missed home even once. The orientation program was very helpful and different workshops like theatre, yoga and aerobics have built my personality. My self-confidence has received a major boost already. The ambience of the institute and the activities it undertakes creates a platform for students to learn every step of the way.

The early stages of the orientation programs brought many prominent speakers to the campus. It was brilliant to get an opportunity to learn from such imminent personalities. The faculty members at the institute are guiding us at every step. I think the mentorship program is a nice concept because it helps us understand the basic aspects of being managers, and it outlines ways to improve ourselves individually and as part of a team.

The educational system followed by the institute has interesting concepts of teaching and it doesn’t rely only on bookish knowledge. It grooms our personality as a whole. Every moment I spend on campus I feel proud to be a part of the Jaipuria family. The infrastructure, facilities and resources add to my learning. Jaipuria, Indore has a brilliant brand image and I will definitely try to add value to it.

“Jaipuria Institute of Management is very student-centric”, says Meeta Malik who claims to have found a second home on the Indore campus.

I hail from Jabalpur and have spent most of my life there before I came to Indore for my PGDM. I believe that life is a book and for me a new chapter has started with Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore. I am looking forward to this new chapter because the institute has a unique education culture that gives me the opportunity to evolve at my own pace. It works towards my overall development, and I feel it will make me a better individual.

The 15 day induction program has already brought about a change in me. The session began with helpful advice from experts in the field, and several activities were also conducted for our benefit. The institute has already changed my notions about education because I have realized that it’s not just about classroom learning. I love the fact that the institute focuses on peer learning.

Jaipuria Institute of Management gives you diverse opportunities like IMP CHISEL (winter internship programme), Summer Internship Programme and also IDP (Individual Development Programme), in which every student is groomed to develop his or her overall persona and become a successful manager. We get to learn a lot not only from the experienced faculty members but industry experts as well. Also, I am very excited about the mentorship program where each faculty member is assigned 5-6 students to mould them into future professionals. Undoubtedly, the B-school’s curriculum and daily operations are very student-centric, giving students the maximum exposure and primary importance.

The student life at the institute is fun and engaging. You get to be a part of several activities that are student-driven and work towards building leadership skills. This is the first time I am living away from home, but Jaipuria, Indore has welcomed me with open arms. I have found a new family on the campus.

CSR Initiative led by students of Jaipuria, Indore seeks to improve the City’s traffic situation

January 24-25, 2014: Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore, organized and implemented a two-day CSR initiative with the objective of improving the traffic situation in Indore. The initiative, named ‘Better Traffic in Indore’, was conducted in association with the Indore Traffic Police. Prior to the event, students were given traffic related training by the Indore traffic police at the Traffic Thana in Indore.

During the event, students, wearing Jaipuria t-shirts, in teams of four to five were stationed at ten major traffic junctions of the city.

Banners carrying the theme of the event were displayed near the students’ positions. At their respective traffic junctions, students handed chocolates and Jaipuria pens as a token of appreciation to those who followed safe traffic norms, such as wearing seat belts or helmets. Traffic violators, on the other hand, were provided with pamphlets that contained statistics of road accidents in Indore, as well as appeals to follow traffic rules. Some students went a step ahead and asked many who were not wearing seat belts to wear seat belts; the motorists, surprisingly, agreed to do so! At other junctions, students were seen taking an active role in managing traffic, which included making drivers stop at red light signals. The Indore traffic police constables at the traffic junctions served tea to the students in appreciation of their service. The ASP, Indore Traffic Police, and Ms Anjana Tiwari, who personally witnessed the actions of the students, appreciated their efforts. The event also received press coverage in some newspapers in the city.

Chandrakant Lovanshi, from Khandwa, M.P., lands a job with Capital IQ, Hyderabad and finds a foothold in his dream sector

“I was looking for an organization in the field of Research & Analysis. When I heard Capital IQ was coming for campus placement, I applied immediately because finance sector is exactly where I want to start it all from,” says Chandrakant Lovanshi. This headstrong PGDM student from Jaipuria, Indore chased his dream with gusto and managed to bag a job as a Junior Research Associate with the Hyderabad based company.

This is no small feat for the boy from the sleepy town of Khandwa, who has been on the road for more than a decade pursuing his academic aspirations. The Biology graduate was keen on making a mark in the world of management and focused on Jaipuria, Indore as the institute where he could realize his goals. Although he had heard a lot about the B School, he did his homework by visiting the campus in order to make sure that it was the right fit for him.

“I realized that Jaipuria, Indore was the best place for me to go to because of the brilliant learning environment and fantastic infrastructure it offers,” says Chandrakant, who is specializing in Finance and Marketing. “Given my background, understanding management concepts was initially difficult for me. But thanks to the support of my faculty and friends I have a good grasp of the subject now.” It was this understanding of the concepts that he believes held him in good standing during the selection process for the job. After having gone through a written and general aptitude test, he was put through three rounds of interviews. During the interview process, his confidence shone through, which is how he managed to bag the coveted job with Capital IQ. “Two years at Jaipuria, Indore have prepared me to face any kind of challenges,” he says with a smile on his face.

Jaipuria Institute of Management has always strived to make its students industry-ready and for Chandrakant the process involved being a part of several initiatives, including the Media Relations Club. He also went through an exhaustive Summer Internship Project with SIDBI, Mumbai, which he believes gives him the confidence to take on the role of a corporate professional himself. “I am really impressed with the curriculum offered by the institute as it focuses on the overall development of an individual,” Chandrakant says. “It has a culture of learning, which has helped me immensely. Not only did I get exposed to the business world, but I also managed to work on my overall personality.” He even goes on to recommend the program to future candidates, as he believes it gives them a much-needed competitive edge.

Now that he has had a head start in his professional journey, Chandrakant wants to work towards a successful future ahead. In five year’s time he hopes to be working in a leadership position handling important projects. But he also has a long term plan, which is a desire to work with a big International organization. And the way this Finance-minded individual is going, you shouldn’t put your money against it.

Further Jaipuria Inodre in association with NHRD network will be organizing the National HR Summit in the month of November and Business Quiz competition for Under Graduate and Post Graduate students in the month of January.
