Green ticks, green ticks and green ticks on the career bucket list. Bhavana Tandon and her journey post Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida

Bhavana Tandon was graduating from Jaipuria Institute of Management in the year 2014 and in her graduation ceremony, she had stated one thing clearly to her friend and family- “I see myself at par and competing with IIM graduates henceforth.” It has only been 4 years since then and Bhavana’s career has been witnessing meteoric rise. The young girl has taken three distinct moves in 48 months, each being better from the other.
Baffled by her speed to success- we recently interviewed Bhavana over a cup of coffee, cookies and heartfelt laughter at her home. Bhavana looked immensely relaxed, happy and contented but the fire in her eye- had gotten us amazed. For a girl in her mid twenties, Bhavana is clear and cut-to-the-point about her career goals. In fact, she has always been clear since she remembers. Prior to starting her PGDM journey with Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, Bhavana was already “The Best All-Round Student” of Daulat Ram College, Delhi University.
Within the span of two years of her PGDM itself, she rose to the position of the student VP of the Finance Club, Core Leader of the HR club, published various papers and articles around Finance, stood as the runner up of the “Six Feet Under”, attended the national Workshop on the Global Economy organized by the B-school, completed a compelling summer project with Shahi Exports Pvt. Ltd., emerged with the highest CGPA in her Finance specialization, so on and so forth. For a girl like her- a little training and some good mentorship was enough to do the charm. And so it did!
She walked out of the Jaipuria Noida campus with a placement offer from L&T Finance. She joined the company as a Management Trainee in the Mumbai office and within 8 months was made a Business Credit Analyst and shifted to the city of her choice- Delhi. Where others take a year or two conveniently to make the rise, Bhavana had it in 8 months. “After having the taste of both Branch & HO, I could finally move into the Small & Medium Enterprises Department of L&T Finance Ltd. at the Regional Office, Delhi and that had me immensely excited. The SME sector had me hooked to it since a very long time,” says Bhavana passionately. Two years passed in a whizz with L&T and she decided to shift her base to a more handsomely paying and gratifying opportunity.
In March, 2016 when Bhavana was contacted by Hero Fin Corp, her life had a big change ahead of her. They gave Bhavana the opportunity to join them as an Associate Credit Analyst where she had to sanction the Credit Facilities to SMEs which included clients within and outside the ecosystem. Not just that- she had to head a team. “When I reached Hero Fin Corp, I realized I have to pull my Jaipuria classroom lessons back from my memory to withstand the challenge ahead of me,” she adds. For the first time in her professional life, she had to head a team and she was nervous, but “I had a very good management education backing me there- my professors had taught me to be a sustainable leader whereas others were taught to merely lead.”
Currently Bhavana made another big jump to Indiabulls Housing Finance Ltd. and is the Area Credit Senior Manager. She deals with big ticket size loans ranging from Rs. 7.5 Crs to Rs. 15 Crs (Mortgages-LAP and Housing Segment) for North Region and as she hands us over the news, she remarks- “my career has been so far, so good.”

Eduroomz – A Story of Startup by 5 Jaipurians

Among the myriad tales of start-ups in India is a tale worth telling. This is a story of innovation, dream, tenacity and above all, of relentless motivation. This is the tale of Eduroomz.

“The greatest achievement was, at first, and for a time, but a dream.”
Napoleon Hill (from Think and grow rich)

Eduroomz was the dreamchild of Akshay, one of the 5 Jaipurians from the Lucknow campus who introduced the novel concept of providing classrooms to teachers. The journey of Eduroomz started as Akshay ramped up his team and implemented his idea on small- scale. While Akshay’s dream Start-up was just budding, Jaipuria’s MiDCOM BUSINESS CHALLENGE came as a boon to his team as they were given an opportunity to present their business plan. How could their dreams fail them? They won the title and were awarded a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakhs!

“If you have zeal to succeed, you have all you need to succeed”- is what Eduroomz believe in. Eduroomz provide rooms on rent to teachers who wish to impart knowledge but lack space to make their visions a reality. So if you are a teacher and have students with the desire to teach, Eduroomz has a room for you! The best part is the nominal cost, which is as low as Rs. 49 per hour. As a token to contribute to the society and not hinder the stream of knowledge from flowing, even in absence of monetary benefits Eduroomz is determined to provide rooms of knowledge to the weaker sections of society. So if you see an air conditioned classroom at Rs. 49 per hour (irrespective of the strength of the class), flexibility in terms of timings and independent work space to teachers, you are looking at an Eduroomz!

The Eduroomz team comprises of 5 members. Since it’s a startup by students, role switching is common and in a way this strengthens the team to explore all operational perspectives.

Right from the very beginning, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow has provided an uninterrupted support to Eduroomz. Because the expert team could recognise potential in budding enterpreneurs, be it providing various platforms to showcase a plan, mentorship and guidance, or networking, Jaipuria has been a pillar of support to Eduroomz. Jaipuria has also been working upon the team’s request to incorporate an incubation centre collaborated with the U.P. government.

It’s not that there have not been obstacles in the journey of Eduroomz. When it comes to education, ideas and results often do not coincide. Eduroomz has endured the obstacles and has built up a robust client network. Eduroomz is Lucknow’s well- knit network with well-equipped classrooms, conference halls, computer labs and study lounges. Eduroomz own 50+ properties with more than five thousand teaching slots in a month, where the priority is to provide teaching by experts at affordable prices.

Eduroomz is still experimenting to include other services, planning to expand its horizons over the next decade and create a niche where online teaching is taking over offline classrooms.

The most unanimous message that these young entrepreneurs wish to convey to those who aspire to have a start- up of their own someday is to be assured that no matter how meticulously they plan, their plans will fail, but the key is to plot a new scheme every time the old one is reduced to ashes. They also suggest stepping out and analysing the needs of target customers instead of planning in isolation because the key to a successful start- up is knowing the demands of target population and targeting them. Jaipuria is glad it could provide aid to these young minds and is committed to their success throughout their journey.

Good attitude, coupled with hardwork helped PGDM’s Sulaxmi of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow come a long way

“There is a thing about trust. It helps you achieve great many things,” believes Sulaxmi, the PGDM graduate of Class 2018 of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. Sulaxmi just bagged herself a placement with Capital First and she couldn’t thank her faculty and mentors enough. For her, “had it not been for their unwavering support and the trust of my mother, the journey would have been incomplete.”

From the moment you start speaking to Sulaxmi, you realize, the humility and simplicity with which the girl approaches life. Thankful to circumstances, friends and kins at every step, Sulaxmi happily sidesteps all the personal effort and hard work she has put in her 2 years of PGDM. When asked, what is it that she wants to do with her first salary that she would be drawing from Capital First as a Associate Credit Manager, she remarks “Family first! I want to send them gifts as token of my appreciation. They need to know how important they have been throughout, for me.”

The Kanpur girl wishes to bring to her organization her undying spirit. “I want to stabilize relationships and enhance the levels of cooperation, collaboration, and trust that exist between people by interacting with others personally, competently, and effectively,” she elaborates. But just what kind of training does she have in order to achieve any of it? The classroom pedagogy at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow consists of unique mentorship programme, diversified peer group, highly experienced faculty, strong industry exposure, and individual development programs. These couples with a state-of-the-art campus have helped Sulaxmi rise above her dreams.

Learning “Business Strategy” with Bela Badhalia- the CEO of Adbhut Jewellery, a day at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur

Over the last decade, women entrepreneurs have long broken the glass ceiling and have been critical drivers of the economy in India. At a latest industry interaction, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur had the opportunity to hear from the dazzling and dynamic Ms. BelaBadhalia, the CEO of Adbhut Jewels who has been the recipient of multiple awards and accolades in the field of Jewellery design, business and execution.

“In order to fulfill your dreams, you need to dream first. And oh, make friends with the failures,” quipped the speaker while sharing her life experiences to the students. Her speech revolved around the importance of effective strategy to run successful business ventures. “Strategy is an action plan and should be drawn keeping long term perspective in mind,” remarked Bela Badhalia.

Enumerating the challenges poised by the latest economic changes in India, she insisted students to stay in touch with the strategy of the company or the organization they are working with. “I had to change my plans and strategies during the time of demonetization. The sudden government policy introduced limit on monetary value for purchasing jewellery, therefore, I had to almost change the product portfolio within the wink of an eye and it would not have been possible had I not stayed in close touch with the Strategy of my business. You need to align your business goals with the vision you had started the business with, in the very first place.”

She further shed light on various aspects of strategic management by stating importance of setting vision and mission for the organization, choosing a product/service depending upon the market, making detailed analysis of external environment and organizational strengths, and to formulate strategies to meet the desired objectives. She advocated setting SMART goals and to break the long-term goals into annual goals to achieve them.

Bela Badhalia is also known for Dyuti- a start up initiative for generating employment for women in the jewellery industry. Passionately fighting for women rights and fetching means to bring women empowerment, Bela Badhalia’s Dyuti served as a complete inspiration for the PGDM students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur.

Jaipuria Lucknow STUDENT Speaks

Prachi of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow talks of her fears, her fights and her wins- now that her PGDM journey comes to a successful close

Prachi was only few days old in the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow campus and she had to face one of her biggest fears- public speaking. “I was nervous. It was my first presentation and I could feel my sweaty palms and dry mouth. I started and ended it within two minutes and I stood on the stage, completely blank and frozen,” articulates Prachi while talking about the most embarrassing moment from her Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow’s journey. “But, honestly, that day taught me a lot,” adds the 23 years old who stood tall in front of the interview panel of Deloitte recently and returned home with an offer letter declaring her latest recruitment by the company. .

Prachi is about to join Deloitte from May 27, 2018. Her 2 years of PGDM taught her various life lessons but the most important of them all were- “Leadership skills, strategic thinking and presentation skills,” elaborates Prachi. In fact, it was these three qualities that held her in good stead in front of the Deloitte panel. At Jaipuria Institute of Management, students are trained to stand ready for the professional world, from the first day they set their foot on campus. .

Prachi recalls- “we were tested and vetted by our faculty individually prior to placements started in full-swing in the Lucknow campus. When my one to one interaction day arrived, I was bombarded by faculty with questions for almost 30-40 minutes and I was out-of-breath, exasperated and all over, thinking of the answers. In fact, even the easiest answers were eluding me and it was then that I realized I had to prepare more.” .

It was 8pm of a certain evening in March and few students were called in the conference room. Prachi was one of them. She had just finished her final round with Deloitte and with multiple apprehensions, she took her steps towards the room, fearing- “I might not have made it through.” However, she was wrong. All I could think when my name was read out was about my mentor. I couldn’t thank him enough or helping me whatever little I could, so far.” So what does this young girl intend to do with her first salary? .

“I want to spend it on my mother,” says Prachi with a broad grin on her face.

Locating the nemesis and beating it right on time- Mansi, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow on her making it to E&Y

“My two cents on placement season in B-schools: boy, it isn’t for the meek hearted!” says Mansi with a chuckle. She has recently bagged herself a plum job with the multinational professional services firm- E&Y. Even though the PGDM girl from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow already had a pre-placement offer from the company she interned with- SMC Global Securities Ltd., she had her eyes fixed on joining a Fortune 500.

Mansi’s friends trust her easy. She says, “that’s may be because I have tried to be around for them, whenever needed and that is a quality my parents had taught me, very early in life.” In fact, not just her friends, even the hostel warden was disappointed when Mansi had decided to find herself a separate accommodation post her 1st year on the campus. “She wanted to put me in-charge of the hostel duties and it was then that I realized how what you give- comes back to you in more meaningful ways than you can ever imagine,” explains Mansi. She adds- “be it my mentors or my faculty or my guides, I have tried to live up to their expectations and it was only around February of 2018, when the placement season started, that I could feel things falling apart.”

It wasn’t a joy ride early 2018 for this brave, young and dynamic girl. Having put her best in academics and extra-curricular, she had her confidence soaring high by the time the first recruiter stepped on campus. “I was rejected. One company after the other,” says Mansi with a smile on her face. With the first recruiter, she couldn’t crack the Aptitude Round. She sat for the second one and she could crack the Aptitude Round but not the GD round. The third process was equally disappointing. And she knew all along her nemesis- the tragic flaw. “Over confidence! I was being over confident because I thought I knew it all.” By the time Mansi’s 23rd birthday arrived, all her friends were placed. With a heavy heart, Mansi sat down to reflect on the latest rejections.

“My mentor Prof. Abhay Kumar Srivastava knew how to spur me right. His exact words were- had I been wrong in thinking you were the best? And that was enough to do the wonders,” exclaims Mansi. She promised him that very moment- “I would be placed by the end of this month, you have my words.” She burnt the midnight lamp, focused and determined to achieve big. 21st March arrived and Mansi had a mail in her mailbox with the offer letter all the way from the E&Y office, stating- “You have been hired. Welcome onboard.” Imagine the joy after the entire struggle!

So what are the few things that Mansi’s PGDM journey of two years with Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow teach her? “If I have to list them down in order of importance, they would be- discipline, knowledge across domains, and the importance of being a good human being, no matter the situation or the circumstances,” concludes Mansi sipping the dreg from her coffee mug.

This wonderful go-getter joined E&Y on 9th of April and shall be back on campus to collect her diploma on the day of her Convocation.
