FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Noida

“There is no task that cannot be done!” – Professor Jones Mathew, Jaipuria Noida

Faculty in the area of Marketing Management, Marketing of Services, Consumer Behaviour and Product and Brand Management, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, Professor Jones Mathew speaks about his love for Marketing as well as his philosophy of “immersive education”.

Professor Mathew’s love for Marketing was born while he was pursuing his MBA from BIT, Mesra, Ranchi (Class of 1989). However, as he says his calling as a teacher came in 2008 when, during a stint as VP (Sales & Marketing) in an Indo-US Joint Venture Company in the fitness industry, he ended up training an entire sales force from scratch. “It is then that I discovered that I loved teaching and training and felt the urge to take it up as a career.”

Professor Mathew then shifted to Academia in 2009 and then finally joined Jaipuria Noida in 2012. On his reasons for joining Jaipuria Noida, Professor Mathew says ‘In the NCR region, Jaipuria Noida occupies place of pride among PGDM institutions. The large number of aspirational students, talented faculty colleagues, four campuses, a strong reputation for academic excellence, a proactive Director, and a congenial work environment were the main reasons I joined Jaipuria, Noida faculty family and chose to teach here.” And his experience at the institutes has further firmed his belief “Teaching at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida has been different from teaching at other institutes. At Jaipuria, the well set organised systems for teaching and mentoring students foster an ideal academic environment and give immense academic freedom to faculty for course designing and delivery”.

In fact, on his first working day on campus, the Jaipuria Noida Director asked him to plan the Sales Management and Business Development course he was requested to anchor – thereby ensuring that students get to learn the latest practices. “Another important feature is the “Uncampus” strategy where geographically distant campuses of Jaipuria Institutes are all connected by a common curriculum. This has helped develop a strong consistency in the “educational delivery” according to Professor Mathew.

Professor Mathew’s pedagogical technique is what he calls “immersive education”. Unlike traditional learning technologies, Immersive Education gives learners a sense of “being there” and greatly enhances the learning experience. Thus, students are encouraged to live the marketing experience in everything they do – watching movies and advertisements, getting into the market to do their projects…creating videographs of interesting consumer behaviour insights, treating case studies as the next best thing to the real thing, and being extremely participative in class. “Students must be able to explore, relate and apply on their own. That is the objective of immersive education,” he says.

The Professor, who did a PhD from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi in 2015, has several publications to his credit like The Vanca: Dilemmas of an e-Commerce Entrepreneurial Start-up, co-authored with Dr. Pinaki Dasgupta and published by the Ivey Case Foundation, Canada, 2015, which he feels might be his best work. This is because “the case covers the areas of entrepreneurship, marketing and sales, role of IT as an important backbone of a 21st century e-commerce organisation and a quick idea-to-market implementation strategy.”

Professor Jones Mathew who believes that there are no shortcuts in life says that mentoring has always been a passion for him. In fact he says that likes to go beyond mentoring and move to sponsorship of students. On his roles as a student sponsor he says “I have sponsored students under the mentoring initiative and recommended them to industry managers in specialist areas such as Marketing Analytics and Digital Marketing through my network. This entails finding suitable job opportunities/summer internships (in addition to the college’s own efforts) as per the mentees’ preferences, then helping them link up with suitable industry professionals, helping them frame their letters of intent, writing letters of recommendation vouching for the candidates’ suitability and then following up with the industry persons till the student is placed either for SIP or final placement. I have also sponsored faculty and ex-mentees to get selected in foreign universities for teaching and higher studies respectively on the strength of Letters Of Interests and Letters Of Recommendations created by me.”

Jaipuria-Noida Taught Me That Hard Work Counts But Smart Work Pays

I joined Jaipuria-Noida after three years of work experience at Ebix which is based in Atlanta. My job profile was that of a data quality analyst and I had to handle and audit data. Ebix, Noida, was where I learnt the nuances of managing myself in the corporate world. I learnt that even though hard work is what counts, it is smart work that pays. It was here that I learnt the importance of building up personal relationships with everyone around me.

I graduated in Electronic and Communications Engineering from Agra. I joined Jaipuria-Noida, because this was the only institute which provided specialization in Operations. The things I learnt at Ebix greatly helped me at Jaipuria-Noida. I was able to maintain my relationships with the members of my study groups. I believe that having had a first-hand experience of the corporate world, I was able to apply my learning in a realistic manner. This is something that freshers have a problem with. I was able to represent myself in a better manner at Jaipuria, thanks to my applicative skills.

I will be taking up Operation Skills and Total Quality Management next year because I wish to expand my knowledge in the field. I am doing my majors in Operations and Marketing. I believe that Ebix and Jaipuria-Noida are similar in that both of them are people-centric. Ebix is extremely employee-centric and Jaipuria, student-centric. Thanks to being at Jaipuria-Noida, I have been able to considerably expand my knowledge which has greatly strengthened my corporate knowledge as well.’

Jaipuria Noida: An Architectural Marvel Of Integration And Harmonization For Better Education.

You become what your surroundings are. Learning is a constant process and it happens all the time. “This has been the guiding principle behind the establishment of Jaipuria Noida and it gets reflected in every aspect of the institution, from architecture to curriculum,” says Dr. J.D. Singh, Director General of Jaipuria Noida. “When we are in harmony with the surroundings then everything integrates and this marriage of elements brings out desired result–all round development that eclipses the best in the world,” adds Dr. Singh.

A student during the course spends considerable amount of time on the campus. It has been scientifically proved that one’s ability and interest to absorb and retain information is very much affected by the surroundings, ambience, atmosphere and space available. “We have always believed that in the campus there should be freedom to breathe, freedom to think, freedom to interact,” highlights Dr. Singh while explaining the thoughts that went into designing the architecture and finalizing the curriculum.

Even before you enter the premises of Jaipuria Noida, you get to see the wave that creating ripples in the education world. Well, we are talking about the façade of the campus building which is in the shape of a wave. “This is the wave of learning and every wave of learning says, mitigate the one which has gone by and acquire the fresh one that is coming up,” explains Dr. Singh.

The moment you step in, you get a sense of tranquility in the greenery and free space of campus. You don’t bump into the concrete building; rather big lawn is waiting to embrace you. When you walk through the big corridors, gentle cool breeze will re-energize you. “Every effort has been made to keep students in touch with essential elements of nature—fresh air and sunlight. There are places in the campus where students indulge in group activities like seeing sunrise and sunset while sipping a cup of tea and chatting with friends,” tells Dr. Singh. “The idea essentially was to let people think big, thinks fresh, remain fresh and carry on”, recounts Dr. Singh on the necessity of relaxing in order to be creative and more productive.

Dr. Singh says that when students join Jaipuria Noida, they come with overload of information which bogs them down. Here they are taught the art of unlearning and emptying their cup of knowledge, so that they can retain what is taught to them in the campus. The entire teaching pedagogy and curriculum is designed on the art of isolating the relevant from the not so relevant.

The library, apart from the books, has a lot to teach the students. Here stones teach wisdom lesson if you care to pay attention. It is like a beach inside. “Stones on the river bed or beaches are polished. In the library too, same stones will always keep on reminding that knowledge is a never ending process and we can never claim to have known it all, but the process of acquiring knowledge will polish us, make us shine. Like the flowing water, new creative thoughts should also keep flowing. Importantly, one should keep moving forward” concludes Dr. Singh.

“Jaipuria Indore is a wonderful management institute which focuses on one’s overall development to make one professional and presentable”

When it comes to communication skills, Geet Malhotra is second to none; not just in the Jaipuria Institute of Management fraternity, but in the entire city of Indore. In the past, Geet has worked with leading Radio Channels of the Times Group and Dainik Bhaskar Group. More recently, after joining Jaipuria Indore, Geet was the winner of the Campus Jockey Hunt of MyFM 94.3, held in November 2011. Clearly, Geet is hardly ever at a loss for words; but ask him to describe his experience at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore and you find him tongue-tied. This is not because he has nothing to say, but because he hardly knows where to begin.

“The experience of staying in Jaipuria Indore is actually beyond words. You can only understand the value of life in Jaipuria Indore if you stay here, with the beautiful landscape all around. It’s a fully-residential campus, and living here 24 x 7 with friends, studying and enjoying all the passions of life is absolutely fantastic.”

An Indore-bred boy, Geet Malhotra is a Commerce graduate from the Renaissance College of Commerce and Management, Indore. He is a trained tabla artist and writes, composes and sings his own songs as well.

“Jaipuria Indore is a wonderful management institute, which focuses on one’s overall development to make one professional and presentable. There is immense scope for extra-curricular activities within the campus. Before joining Jaipuria Indore, I had worked as a core team organiser in Ganga Avtaran, an event organised by the Paridhi Art Group in association with the Uttarakhand government. I was able to build on my organisational skills in Jaipuria Indore by being an organiser for the ENCORE 2 Fest and the National Business Olympiad at Jaipuria Indore. Over and above this, I was also the main event coordinator for the student exchange programme across all four campuses of Jaipuria Institute of Management, called MILAN.”

Geet’s exposure to organising large-scale events at Jaipuria Indore came very handy during his summer internship with Zeeco Media Private Limited, where, as the supervisor of an 18-member team, he successfully organised Gulli Premier League in the NCR region. This widely acclaimed event was sponsored by RadioCity 91.1 FM.

Geet Malhotra, who is currently specialising in Marketing at Jaipuria Indore, is looking forward to a career that harnesses his creative as well as organisational skills.
