Two years back, little did Girish Chaple of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore know his first job was going to be with Landmark Worldwide on a package of 16 lacs p.a.

Girish Chaple of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore had his one eye fixed on getting his 2 years of PGDM come to a fruitful end but to wrap it with a package of 16 lacs wasn’t quite what he was expecting! At the moment, Girish is sitting on cloud 9. After all, it’s his first job ever in life and it’s with none other than the San Francisco headquartered Landmark Worldwide.
Like many engineering students, Girish picked a Management programme in the year 2015 to accelerate his career. He arrived at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore with hopes of getting the nuances of Management correct. The first few months on campus had its sets of hiccups for him- settling down in a new place doesn’t come naturally to everyone; however, Girish treated it all as blessings. “There has always been something to learn at every conscious hour within the campus,” elaborates the man who is going to be part of a global group in no matter of time.

“I did my winter internship with TP Impex where I was essentially involved in the Distribution Mechanism of the company. It is there that I received the clarity pertaining to what specialization I wanted to opt for,” mentions Girish when asked about an Engineer’s choice to join an FMCG company. Girish is cut out for a Marketing profile. Did you ask why? Well, he is the kind of guy who keeps calm on the face of crisis but has the attitude of a go-getter in him. He doesn’t cringe under extra responsibilities and he is an optimist- a born one. While being a crucial member of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Club, Girish could be spotted working within a team set up, leading from the front. Naturally, his penchant for communication made him focus towards Marketing as a potential profile.

However, his tryst with Marketing as an interesting area started happening when he attended his first summer internship with Pantaloons as a Department Manager in April 2017, for three months. It was an internship opportunity that Jaipuria, Indore brought to him. Girish says- “It was magical! I started figuring out where to dig my teeth while communicating with a client and how to solve for the problems at hand.” No wonder, Girish aimed for the moon and didn’t have to settle for the stars.

But you would be wrong to assume it all came easy to him. No, Girish did face rejections from a couple of companies to begin with. “When I was rejected by few, I got the bigger picture, the perspective! I realized I had to prepare more, bridge the gap between industry expectations and my understanding. Prior to Landmark, I prepared religiously about the company and my profile,” says a committed Girish.

With industry sessions, backed by a rigorous, relentless curriculum and supported by a team of super helpful faculty Girish’s two years has been a wrap- of memories, goodwill and success!

How many Management professionals actually consider joining Academia post their MBAs?

A conversation with Jaipuria, Noida alumnus Prof. Dharmendra Pandey who is currently in the Faculty of Marketing at Amity Business School

Dharmendra Pandey unlike a lot of other Management graduates was always tad different- even as a student inside the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida’s classroom. While others would listen to speak, Dharmendra listened to analyse. Like his friends from Class 2006, he had dreams of being absorbed by the industry yet he had one eye fixed on the larger scheme of affairs. He thirsted for knowledge- the kind that could help others as well.

Having finished his Bachelors in Arts with a first division, Dharmendra had opted to do a PGDM in the year 2004. He joined Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida and thereafter, made it to India Mart as Sr. Executive, Client Servicing. He worked his way to the higher rungs of the ladder and stayed there for 19 months. Even though he didn’t have much reason to quit, he was irked with the same itch- to not satiate in terms of knowledge. While his colleagues were opting for promotions and fighting tooth and nail to beat the blues of the white-collar jobs, Dharmendra headed to Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation for an M.Phil. in Management. Therefore, it comes as no surprise to learn that this 2006 alumnus of Jaipuria Institute of Management is today a Faculty of Marketing in Amity Business School, Lucknow. He is also pursuing his PhD alongside.

Walking the less-trodden path- from Pantaloon Retails India to Faculty at a Business School

“During the early years of the millennial, things were different. The corporate world was demanding but not this brutally demanding either. Today, there is no one thumb-rule to success. You need to keep abreast with everything that is latest- to beat the odds and survive on top of the games,” says Prof. Dharmendra. He was working as Asst. Dept. Manager with Aditya Birla Fashion retail- brushing his shoulders amidst opportunities of maximizing business for the organization and strategically working towards cost reduction. Every day he would see his Management education tested for good and it was then he tried to test the waters of higher management education- to perform better.

What and who aided in the process and served as inspiration to Dharmendra? He believes the passion and inspiration was always there- “thanks to his faculty members at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. I think they are the best assets in academia. My faculty members were always updated with the best knowledge, research skills and motivated us beyond words. In fact, research acumen is integral to academia, and I have gained it through them. They were also simple and humble, which is a quality I want to imbibe,” he says thoughtfully.

Prof. Dharmendra has seen both worlds; industry and academia, inside out. He asserts that industry is changing rapidly but claims that B Schools like Jaipuria Institute of Management are keeping up with the times. According to him, data science is the biggest industry trend, which is why future managers need to possess analytical skills.

In the context, he reveals how his alma mater is evolving and shaping industry leaders, “I see that Jaipuria Institute of Management is aggressively bringing industry context to education. There are skills based and specialization courses in the PGDM program. They also liaise with alumni better and use their inputs to advantage,” he says.

So what is the scope and growth prospect for management graduates in the coming years? Prof. Dharmendra who keeps a close eye on placement seasons at B Schools is of the opinion that since 2014 the market has improved and so have job opportunities. While manufacturing sector has shown a gradual growth, service sector has boomed in the past five years. He urges students to make the most out of these opportunities when he says, “Update your skills and have a go-getter attitude. There will be no dearth of opportunities for you. I also think the focus should be on entrepreneurial skills because this is the right time for start-ups. Things are definitely looking up.”

Building a Sentosa Island to veg-burger with chicken pieces in it, the International Study Programme was a "wow!" for Jaipuria, Jaipur's Shubham

It’s hilarious how certain fundamental concepts differ dramatically from land to land, country to country! Shubham Mittal and his friend from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur was on an International Study Programme (ISP) this November in Singapore- for an entire week. One day, they walked into a departmental store at the Lion City- they were hungry. Having decided to buy a vegetable burger, Shubham reached to the store Assistant to get one. He handed Shubham a big, fat burger, mentioning- “here’s your veg burger Sir, with very small pieces of chicken in it.” Shubham couldn’t help but burst into a fit of laughter!

This is the thing with learning Management by trotting the Globe! From culture, to language, to ethics to way businesses are addressed- your eyes open to a whole new perspective- a whole new landscape of understanding Management. Shubham experienced just that!

“Now that am back to the classroom, I feel I have become an even more careful listener. I am starting to look at concepts from varied dimensions and that is helping immensely. Adding to it is the fact that I saw real-life, how other countries value time and knowledge,” elaborates Shubham whose team submitted a thick and insightful project on “what will it take to make something similar to a Sentosa Island in Jaipur?”

Over the one week trip to Singapore, Shubham and team from Jaipuria Institute of Management did not only attend talks around “Innovation Management” from professionals of Microsoft, Hotel Park Royal and Govin Academy Pte. Ltd. but also had to research on one topic each- as teams. “The final task was to submit a report and a group presentation post attending all the lectures and sessions in Singapore. The project given to our team was to study the Sentosa Island and to make a report as to what it would take to make a similar destination spot in Jaipur,” elaborates Shubham Mittal.

We scooped and dug out data, read a lot of reports around Sentosa, talked to locales of Singapore, discussed with PGDM students of schools we visited, brainstormed in team and tried to solve for the most essential question- fund and cost!  Understanding Sentosa Island is a Public – Private Investment having corporate giants invested heavily alongside government, our project attempted to problem solve for it in the Indian context. 

However, what still stays as a highlight for Shubham from the trip is the fact that he was able to gather high praises for his inputs pertaining to Team Management. While attending a class at S.P Jain Global Business School, Singapore, Shubham’s ideas on the topic had the faculty applaud him and put him in her network.

Preparing the international stage- Jaipuria Institute of Management signs vital MoU with Rennes School of Business, France, continuing its “global” journey

Today an MBA is practically irrelevant if it doesn’t make its student ready for the global stage. Jaipuria Institute of Management understands that! With an eye on prepping its PGDM students for global careers, Jaipuria Institute of Management recently signed a MoU with Rennes School of Business, France, with the objective to lead to effective collaboration between the two renowned educational institutes. Shri Shreevats Jaipuria, Vice Chairman of the B School signed the General Agreement of International Academic Cooperation with representatives of the triple-accredited French counterpart.

mou1An initiative driven by Dr. Prabhat Pankaj, Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, the agreement allows students from both institutes, pursuing their courses in Management and Business streams to travel across continents for a semester of studies. As a part of the exchange program, students from all the four campuses of Jaipuria Institute of Management Noida, Jaipur, Lucknow, Indore will get to choose from the list of courses at the Graduate Credit Transfer level offered by Rennes School of Business, France.

Besides the opportunity to study in a foreign environment and interact with peers from all over the world, students of Jaipuria Institute of Management will gain 20 to 30 ECTS credits. Another highlight of the exchange program is that students will not be charged any extra tuition fees. It’s also interesting to note that the agreement works at different levels of the learning experience, which can be customized for students of both countries.

To further optimize the association. management aspirants from Jaipuria Institute of Management can get their specializations, which coupled with the transfer of credit system, would lead to a Master of Science degree from Rennes School of Business. From International Luxury and Brand Management to International Marketing, there are various options students can choose from. There’s also a two-week summer program that students can look forward to.

Since internships are compulsory for the MSc programs, students will also get useful support from the French B School. It thus promises to offer students of Jaipuria Institute of Management a stepping stone into the International corporate sphere. The two educational institutes will also share learning resources, according to the MoU initiated from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur. It will also be the operating campus for the MoU, which will lead to a fruitful exchange between both B Schools.

Jaipuria Institute of Management signs MoU with Skyline University College, University of Sharjah, UAE – writing a new chapter in international relations in education

On 11 December Skyline University College, University of Sharjah, UAE and Jaipuria Institute of Management signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see wide-ranging academic collaboration between the two institutions in the coming days.

Grounded in the sharing of knowledge, skills, and expertise, the MoU will facilitate faculty and student exchange at post graduate levels and joint educational programs and research activities. The MoU seeks to establish a robust framework for learning across borders to enable international exposure for students pursuing education in the two institutions. Shared goals, flexibility of approach, and the cooperative vein of this MoU will help to establish a unique platform for valuable academic and cultural interactions.

The MoU establishes closer international ties for mutual benefit between two institutes of excellence and repute: Jaipuria Institute of Management, which offers PGDM programs at four world class campuses in Lucknow, Noida, Jaipur, and Indore, and Skyline University College, which believes in responding innovatively and effectively to train human resources and fulfil the educational needs of a range of industries.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Amitabh Upadhya (Dean, Skyline University College, Sharjah, UAE) and Mr. Shreevats Jaipuria (Vice Chairman, Jaipuria Institute of Management). Dr. Kavita Pathak (Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida), Dr. Poonam Sharma (Dean, International Relations), Professor Ashok Advani (Executive Member, IRC), and Professor Ajay Bansal (Programme Director) were present on the occasion. 

Welcoming the distinguished delegation, Dr. Kavita Pathak outlined the similarities between India and Dubai, their multi-ethnic and multicultural strengths, IT prowess, and the common vision of bolstering the economy by improving the quality of education. Sharing the vision, Dr. Amitabh Upadhya stressed, ‘One of the key solutions to be one of the top 30 countries in the world is to challenge overwhelming change in education.’ Expressing his desire that this MoU be implemented and practiced in the long run, he hoped the association with Jaipuria Institute of Management would prove fruitful for both the institutions.

With the promise of constant endeavours to nurture the bond, there was further discussion on the possibility of setting up an Immersion Program for students of both the institutions. To honour and commemorate this signal partnership, a memento was presented to Dr. Amitabh Upadhya.

Inspired by its guiding principles, Jaipuria Institute of Management has taken another bold step to strengthen its offering of holistic management education.

Alumnus Shreyasee Sinha of PGDM Class 2010 of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida talks about “what it takes to begin with Sales”

Year 2010 saw Shreyasee Sinha graduate from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. She received her first job offer from All E Technologies while at campus and she had walked out of the school, promising it to come back again. 7 years flew by and life kept her on the toes with the big and small things. Regular family commitments, long work hours, deadlines, the never-ending shifts of “being there” for people and what not! The young girl who had started her professional sojourn as a Business Development manager years back is today an Assistant Manager with ESQ- a very reputed IT solutions company in India. We asked Shreyasee, how does it feel to be back to your alma mater once again? Pat came her reply-

“It all started from here and now that I reflect and critically look at things- my life and the school’s have been growing hand in hand- towards more promising futures!”

Busting the myth- starting with Sales

“At Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida we were taught the value of independence. We were taught how to make the best use of it,” says Shreyasee. Whether it was her first salary that was spent on buying gifts for loved ones or being a student in the classroom, “all of it has been formulative in ways. We were never stopped from experimenting and pushing our own boundaries.” Result? Jaipuria’s alumni today are in commanding offices all across the world.

Shreyasee’s first job had her experience B2B Sales and she had to make sales pitches for clients. From there she moved to customer management. So how was Sales as a vertical for a young and aspiring girl to begin with?

“If you want to have a career in Marketing, it is absolutely fine to start in Sales. You will learn about the world and human psychology in difficult ways but nothing like it,” she adds positively. “It brings the best out of you when you start with the hard part first.”

Now seasoned in the industry, she reveals what it takes to make your mark in the professional sphere.

  • Firstly, you need to be a team player. You cannot survive in any role as an individual and have to work with people
  • Secondly, you need to have an analytical bent of mind to be able to face any situation in your professional life- be it in Sales department or Finance
  • Finally, it’s important to have comprehensive knowledge of the industry, your competitors, the market, etc. You cannot afford to limit or satiate yourself in today’s market. This one skill-set will enable you in decision making process- tremendously

So all you young professionals out there, debating between whether to take your Sales profile or settle for humbler, comfortable beginnings, Shreyasee is someone who indicates what hard work can bring to the table!

Jaipuria Institute of Management's students learning Management within the fastest growing economies of the world- Singapore

The impact of a global stint while pursuing your Management education is undeniable! And Jaipurians just experienced one such, at Singapore- amidst students of Nanyang Business School and Nanyang Technological University, various industries, workshops, Singapore Stock Exchange and what not! With a more-than-exciting one week on the foreign soil, PGDM students of Jaipuria Institute of Management across all the fur campuses- Noida, Lucknow, Indore and Jaipur soaked in an experience of a lifetime- within an economy that is growing at GDP per capita of US $60,000.

However, the trip wasn’t for everyone! After initial nominations, the four campuses’ students were chosen based on their CGPA for the non-credit program, which has a lot to offer every step of the way. To ensure that they get the most out of the program, the participants were put through informative sessions before they set off to Singapore. They were then divided into smaller teams with a group leader and faculty coordinator for effective learning through a diverse range of activities planned for the program. From a session on ‘Innovation Management’ by Dr. Anand Govindaluri, CEO and Founding Director of Govin Academy Pte. Ltd, Singapore to academic visits to Microsoft Operation, Singapore, S.P. Jain School of Global Management; dynamic activities highlighted the program every day.

Innovation Management remained the overall theme of the program as students absorbed latest business practices and trends in different fields. They had a fruitful trip to the Singapore Stock Exchange, where they learned more about operations and functioning of one of the most exciting financial platforms in the world. Trips to Nanyang Business School and Nanyang Technological University gave them the opportunity to interact with and learn from globally experienced faculty members. They also benefited from their interactions with students from foreign business schools as they exchanged notes about shared and different experiences.

All through the week long program students were in the lap of luxury as they explored local culture and sites to the fullest. After all, Singapore is a city in the East that holds its own against any top Western powerhouse. From the best restaurants and cafes to popular sites like Marina Bay, Universal Studios, Sentosa Islands and more, students feasted on the local marvels and had a lot of fun on their trip as well. However as they visited each of the sites, students also realized why Singapore is a world class city. Through sessions on these sites, they learned firsthand how innovation plays a part in boosting the infrastructure and overall function of a place.

Taking a cue from these sessions, all 15 teams then had to work on projects that were part of the Certificate Course in Innovation Management. Marina Bay Sands, Universal Studios, Sentosa Islands and Singapore City Infra were the projects students worked on with great enthusiasm. At the end of the program, they also had to submit a report and a make a presentation of their findings. They were marked on different parameters and were judged for their presentation skills as well. Teams from Jaipuria, Lucknow bagged the top three prizes while one team from Jaipuria, Jaipur sneaked onto the podium as joined third prize winner.

The winning teams won gold plated pure silver medals with Jaipuria Emblem and Certificates of Excellence for each member of the team, with the first prize winning team getting Rs. 20,000 and the first runner up team taking home Rs. 10,000 as well. However all teams agreed that the experience they had was the true reward from the program. The winners were felicitated at the Women Entrepreneurship Forum held at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow.

When an International faculty visits your campus, you pick his brains about global roles for future managers, demands of the industry and tips to make yourself stand apart. And Dr. Ashish Chandra is not just another faculty member from a foreign university. The winner of the Outstanding Professor Award given by the University of Houston – Clear Lake Alumni Association in 2015, he is clearly a favorite with his students. With over 20 years of teaching experience and more than 75 research papers under his belt, the marketing expert with a niche in Healthcare Management, he is just the right person to give future managers a roadmap of what lies ahead.

Prepare for the future smartly

Dr. Chandra was at Jaipuria Institute of Management recently conducting a course on Marketing and OB. He brought his vast experience to the table as he offered students valuable insights about markets abroad and how they can prepare themselves for global manager roles. He also had some practical advice for students when he said, “Three years from now you won’t be working with the people sitting next to you right now. But at the end of the program, when you are looking for placements, they will be your biggest competition. The key is to grow into an environment of healthy competition while finding your own identity.”

Important attributes to impress future employers

Dr. Chandra has the same rationale when it comes to teamwork. He asserts that for college projects students should be thrown into diverse teams because that will be the scenario for them in a professional setup. Your future employers want to know whether you can work in a team that you have not picked for yourself. “Besides being a team player, you need to be flexible. How mobile you are willing to be can go a long way in determining your value in the world of Marketing. Your communication skills are crucial too because sometimes you need to be an educator for commercials. You need to educate your audience about the products,” he says.

How to navigate through initial career stages

Over the course of two decades, Dr. Chandra has seen many young graduates go on to build successful careers. But he asserts that students cannot expect to be completely happy as soon as they get their hands on the Marketing degree. He believes young graduates need to have a passion for what they do, and they can’t realize whether they fit in till they start working. “You have to know that the first few jobs will be rough, and no job is perfect anyway. As marketing professionals, you have to go out there and experience things. Don’t quit because you don’t like a job; the gap in your CV reflects badly. Every experience counts,” he adds on a profound note.

Amandeep Singh Kohli of Jaipuria Institute of Management had a winner's smile when the offer from Deloitte arrived

Amandeep Singh Kohli had heard about Jaipuria Institute of Management from close quarters. His cousin is the B School alum, who got a plum campus placement and is on a successful career trajectory. He sought for a similar fate for himself and came to Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. After a two year transition from a novice to an industry ready professional, his career is headed in the right direction. He has bagged placement with an International giant like Deloitte where he will be working as a Tax Consultant. Here’s a walk down the road to his perfect corporate launch.

Gaining the experience and confidence

Amandeep calls his stint at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow as an exploration of his strengths, talents and abilities. Throughout the period of two years he was put through the paces with different activities that built his confidence and prepared him for the challenges he would face in the corporate world. “Early on during my time at the institute my stage fear was completely eliminated. The B School also took every possible step to ensure fantastic placements for all of us. We were given tips and training to make the most out of these opportunities,” he reveals.

Winning over the interviewers

While his B School training had made Amandeep confident going into the placement process, it was up to him to deliver on the D Day. And when you are in contention for a job with a brand like Deloitte, things can get daunting. But according to him, the key lies in staying calm and going through the interviews with a smile. “I had to go through a technical and Director round, but they were mostly trying to find out if I was flexible and ready to fit into their organization. I think my confidence and sense of humor kept them engaged and won me the job,” he claims.

Working with a ‘star’ brand

Amandeep always had a dream of working with a top corporate brand, which has now come true. Starting your career with a globally recognized name is a huge opportunity that few fresh graduates get. He also understands that it is a huge responsibility and wants to do his best to deliver. “I feel very prepared for this new phase in my life. I will take on the challenges I face in my work day with confidence and a smile. I don’t want to plan far ahead and take my time to explore the possibilities that come my way,” he says brimming with confidence.

Want to bag placement with International giant like Amazon? Sraboni Mustauphey tells us how exposure at Jaipuria, Noida made it possible

“Jaipuria, Noida taught me that an opportunity could be big or small, but the outcome is always huge and fruitful. It is the place that actually facilitated many such opportunities and enabled me to grab them with both hands. That’s the reason I am where I am today,” says Sraboni Mustauphey, student of PGDM 2016 – 18. The advantageous position she finds herself in today is definitely an enviable one. After all, how many management graduates get placed with an International powerhouse like Amazon. Here she reveals how the exposure offered by her B School made this ‘miracle’ happen.

How it all started

Sraboni dreamt of a corporate career and wanted to be best prepared for interesting job profiles. She knew that a B School would offer her platforms to develop her personality and transition into being a professional. After diligent research, which included speaking to a faculty member of the B School, she became a part of the Jaipuria family. “I think right from the orientation days when I became aware of the vastness of the curriculum the learning never stopped at Jaipuria, Noida. There is a certain rigorousness and dynamism to learning at the B School, which has prepared me for the workplace experience and challenges,” she says.

Gaining confidence for the placement interview

Sraboni talks about different industry oriented initiatives including guest lectures at her B School, which gave her the confidence to interact with the professionals. According to her, being selected by her choice of firm for her desired job during the SIP was one of the highlights of her PGDM stint. Another highlight would come soon after with her placement with Amazon. “I think I was completely confident when I went for the interview and didn’t put myself under undue pressure. I answered all questions honestly and stayed true to myself. All four rounds of PI judged us on leadership and decision making skills, and I made the right impression,” she adds.

What lies ahead?

Sraboni claims that she hasn’t been able to wipe the smile off her face since the news of her placement. After bagging their dream job, who would! In her People Management and Operations Management role, she will be working with a team of 20 associates handling customer queries and logistics. She is raring to prove her mettle in the professional sphere and leaves us with last bit of insight from the placement interview. “I think all Amazon needed to know was how willing I was to work and mold into their environment. They tested my attitude towards crisis situations, but the key is to stay calm and believe in yourself,” she concludes.
