The Management Graduate Mindset

After all the hardships of going through a tough selection process, and getting into one of the most coveted management schools, you are now ready for the next phase of your life. We understand if you are nervous and excited at the same time. Many of our alumni felt the same way. We’ve found that a segment of our students makes an early mark in their PGDM journey with us. And it surely is a good idea to prepare further and get a head start on your PGDM program at Jaipuria Institute of Management.

So here are five tips that can make you the early bird at B-school

Tip 1: Make an early start

For some of you, this could be a return to academia from the workplace. While we appreciate the thought behind gaining work experience before attending PGDM, it is equally important to brush up on skills lying dormant like quantitative aptitude and the ability to take notes.

We encourage our students to have pre-PGDM reads (we already have our course pedagogy available), as it would give you a head start if you could glance over the syllabus and the books. It would be beneficial to crack your first semester.

You are joining the program with a lot of knowledge and experience. Don’t let them get in your way of acquiring new knowledge. Learning to unlearn is essential as it helps you grasp new concepts and solve business case studies much better.

Tip 2: Build relationships and make friends

At Jaipuria, we encourage building relationships and growing together. Mentor-mentee, batchmates, roommates, friends, and so on, we wouldn’t like to put a tag on the connections. The more, the merrier. Use the days at the school to network, and just don’t bury yourself in books. Participate in the symposiums and conclaves and make genuine efforts to widen your circle.

Many assignments will involve group work, like, let-it projects, market research, surveys, Business Orientation Programme (BOP), or even your summer internship project reports. It’s fun to do them in groups. Speak with students from previous years and your professors, as you never know who could become a future business partner, advisor, or even a lifelong buddy.

Tip 3: Make the most out of your management graduate status

Pursuing a PGDM program allows you to ask questions, so go ahead and use that card at every opportunity. With market research exercises, you can get interviews, collect data, attend workshops & conferences, and open up opportunities to connect with the founders of organizations. Use the student tag to explore new frontiers, meet business leaders and identify which stream you want to soak yourself in.

Tip 4: Keep Pursuing your Interests, Inside and Outside the Program

A lot will be going on in your PGDM program: assignments, case studies, symposiums, clubs, and so on. We encourage our students to participate in academics to the fullest while exploring and pursuing their latent abilities.

Maintaining your interests and hobbies can help you cope with the academic pressure while bolstering your sense of self as you progress through the program. Also, doing anything unrelated to the PGDM program might help you clear your thoughts and adequately understand the program’s issues.

Tip 5: Make learning fun

Finally, it’s not only about studying. Mix it up from the first day: take a break from reading and listen to some of the finest podcasts for management students; attend lectures, seminars, and workshops; watch TEDx talks and use online learning aids. Explore as many different learning streams as possible so that you may arm yourself with information from a variety of sources.

All these activities will result in you gathering a wealth of information in your arsenal and make you more adaptable to different situations. The knowledge and experience will come in handy during the placement season, making you a wholesome management hire.

To new beginnings

Allow yourself to unwind! Take a week off before the commencement of the program and retrospect on the purpose of joining the PDGM program. Don’t pressure yourself to excel at all the clubs and events, prioritise what you want and also balance a vibrant social life and go by your strength.

Also, at Jaipuria Institute of Management, we ask all our students to focus and work on their mental and physical well-being. We look forward to welcoming you to our campus and are excited to watch the transformation of future business leaders.

A Feather in the Hat – Jaipuria Noida's Dr. Shivani Bali’s Research got Patented

Blockchain-based Drug Traceability System for Pharmaceutical Supply Chain is now patented on her name by Govt. of India.

Research is an integral part of Jaipuria culture. Faculty members here are deeply engaged in numerous research activities. One of the recent research that got its due recognition is Dr. Shivani Bali’s, research titled Blockchain-based Drug Traceability System for Pharmaceutical Supply chain which is now patented in her name by Govt. of India. In a conversation, the Professor of Business Analytics and Programme Director, PGDM (Service Management) at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida shares the background behind her research. Excerpts:

The consumer of any pharmaceutical drug always has a question, “Is the drug genuine or fake?” Currently, there is no technological solution available to this question. The only way to ascertain the genuineness of a drug is via lab tests, which are definitely highly accurate, but they generally take days to provide the answer. This patent provides a traceability system based on blockchain technology that will distinguish between original and falsified drugs.

A survey done by the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that there are more than 1 million deaths yearly due to counterfeit pharmaceuticals. The World Health Organization estimates that 50% of the drugs that are sold are counterfeit and 90% of drugs purchased online are not from the country from which the website claims it to be. Falsified drugs don’t do the due treatment that the patient needs and this in many cases can lead to risky consequences. Imperative nodes of the supply chain can distinguish between original or falsified drugs as they would be able to track the pharmaceuticals to their provenance. The imperative nodes can gain transparency regarding pharmaceuticals and if it has been altered, replaced, it also helps in inventory management.

When a drug is delivered to the pharmacy, pharmacists and consumers can easily trace it down through the supply chain and also the information if the drug has not met the standard parameters at any step in the chain as they will have full access to the supply chain. They can find out whether the drug is coming from a factory that is authentic or has been planted in the middle of the supply chain. Blockchain reduces complexity, hence it becomes more feasible to track and trace drugs.

Kudos to her research, in fact, it was one of the most awaited solutions that the pharma industry and the consumers were looking for.

Ikroop Kaur Kalra’s PGDM specialization is Marketing and she is now the new Asst. Store Manager to one of India’s celebrated retail fashion brands

There were 20 students from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore campus who sat for the Aditya Birla Fashion & Retail’s interview process. “Each one of us were focused and absolutely determined, with everything we needed to outshine in the selection, however, I was sure I wouldn’t be beaten at any cost,” remarks Ikroop who is going to get on-board with India’s leading fashion retail house as a Assistant Store Manager to begin with.
Ikroop was tested throughout the selection. With one question coming after the other from across the interviewer’s side, Ikroop knew she had to keep calm. However, the trickiest was- “why don’t you join your father’s already established business and make more in it?” And, she had her answers up her sleeve. The girl from Bhopal wishes she had just dealt one question a bit better and that was- “what are few things you would want to do to motivate your stuff?” But, what matters is- it all ended well.
Being an Assistant Store Manager, Ikroop would need to look after achievement of sales target, store operations management, focus on the requirements of the customers, ensure customer service quality, and everyone at store. As she had opted for Marketing as one of her specializations, she feels completely at home with her new roles and responsibilities. “At Jaipuria, Indore we are trained in a very immersive ecosystem and curriculum. I have been imparted with both theoretical and practice oriented concepts under Retail Marketing. Field visit to Big Bazaar and other departmental stores were organized to impart us with clarity on- how stores are managed. We were taught how various concepts of Visual Merchandising work, retail shrinkage, retail formats and layouts, ruture retail trends like Bit coins, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, etc.,” explains Ikroop while talking about her strength areas and how she will add value to her organization with a sound PGDM education in her kitty. Adding to all of it, her summer internship with HDFC bank during her first year at Jaipuria, Indore had her taste the corporate world where she could open 8 savings account in 45 days. Experiences like that are invaluable indeed!
Ikroop was at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida campus when the news of her final selection arrived. “I was overwhelmed with phone calls from my friends and colleagues and it was after 15 or 20 minutes that I could finally call my parents about the offer from Aditya Birla Retail and that was when I felt complete,” she says.
This dynamic, young and ambitious Jaipurian is all set to begin her corporate sojourn from 4th February, 2019 and she wishes her teachers to remember her as a honest, disciplined person with a good presence of mind.

All set to start with Deloitte as a Tax Consultant- Pankaj of Jaipuria, Indore talks of his final placement and friendship.

“It is unbelievable the kind of friendship I experienced these two years of my PGDM in Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore,” says A. Pankaj Rao who was welcomed with beats of dhol by his friends when he got back to campus after cracking the placements with Deloitte. “When you are attending B-school miles away from home and got limited pocket money to spend, you understand the value of teamwork and friendship,” adds Pankaj nostalgically as he is all set to start his journey with the Fortune 500 Company in few days.
Pankaj was asked a very interesting situation question during his interview- “imagine a situation where you have been allotted multiple tasks by two of your superiors. Which would you choose and why?” The Jabalpur boy gave it few seconds and replied- “I would use my discretion to understand the priority and get the tasks wrapped accordingly.” The panel from Deloitte took heed. And with 6 other colleagues of Pankaj waiting their turn to be selected, Pankaj got the offer to become the next Tax Consultant of the company.

His job would primarily revolve around- filing tax returns for clients, developing healthy relationship with clients and communicating information within various departments and Pankaj feels quite ready to garb on his new role. “I have always been enamored by the adroitness of Mr. Vincent Thomas, our Training Associate at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore who dedicatedly helped us during the whole placement process. His communication skills and ability to multi-task are few skills I want to imbibe in myself,” exclaims Pankaj when asked about that one person who touched his life professionally in last 2 years of PGDM.
7th September, 2018 shall stay close to Pankaj’s heart. He was sitting in the auditorium waiting for the senior Management of Deloitte to declare the results. Something in Pankaj’s heart knew he has made it but he needed to hear it. And his name was announced. “The remaining is blur in my head. I remember hugging my elder brother tight and calling my mother home with tears of joy rolling down my eyes,” explains Pankaj.
With newer responsibilities awaiting him at Deloitte, what is the man going to miss the most about Jaipuria, Indore? “The people I met here and the friendship we forged,” were his parting remarks.

For Ayush Mishra of Jaipuria, Noida, the next few years of life is going to be about hard work, followed by spending evenings and weekends at Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Ferrari World, Atlantic, so on and so forth. After all, he has received his job offer all the way from Middle East’s renowned supply chain and logistics company- Zen Global DMCC.
The moment when the news arrived
“It was 15th October and I was attending my Inventory Management class. It was around 2:30 p.m. when a UAE number flashed on my mobile screen. I could feel my heart thumping inside me. I excused myself from class to receive the call and as soon as I took the phone close to my ear, a voice from the other side asked- ‘Am I speaking to Mr. Ayush Mishra?’ Even before I could reply, arrived the news- ‘I am calling from Zen Global DMCC and I wish to inform you that we are willing to provide you the employment with us at 18 lacs p.a. Is it fine with you?’ My joy knew no bounds,” narrates Ayush while explaining how it felt on first hearing about his new job offer.
The Varanasi boy- his stumbling blocks and his wins

Before Ayush sat for the interview with Zen Global DMCC, he had applied at SRF Ltd.- a manufacturing company located in Gurgaon. The competition was fierce. After that I was asked to handle a situation where after a point in time, the situation demanded me to lie. I did. And they immediately pointed out- ‘yes, you are caught! You just lied.’
Of course, Ayush could not make it to SRF Ltd. but his win was- the lesson he brought back home from the incident. “Next time I am asked this question again, I will draw the answer from my strengths,” says Ayush smilingly.
