“Geography has made us neighbors, History has made us friends. And Economics has made us partners,” said John. F. Kennedy once. That’s the wide ranging impact of the subject; from our day to day life to world politics. There are some who might consider Economics a dry topic, but Dr. Vrinda Jain displays tremendous passion for it. The senior faculty member who has been with Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida for years teaches Managerial Economics, Economic Environment of Business and International Economics. Here she talks about her love for the subject and her association with the B School.
Dr. Jain developed a liking for the subject early on in her academic journey. The passion was honed as she pursued her Economics (Hons) from Delhi University. She was fascinated with topics like how does money come into existence, the role of Reserve Bank of India, and policy framework. Looking back on her tryst with Economics, she says, “These topics made me more curious about the subject. I did my post-graduation and Ph. D in Economics because I wanted to dig deeper into this fascinating world. My Ph. D was on International Trade because I was keen on knowing why countries trade, why some of them have common currency etc.”
These questions are extremely relevant in today’s world of globalization. As countries depend on each other, important questions about protectionism imposed by the US, India’s anti-dumping duties etc need to be looked at. Dr. Jain believes that Economics cannot be overlooked by anyone, least of all future managers. Since 2005, she has been trying to impart this knowledge to students at Jaipuria, Noida. “It is up to the faculty members to make the subject more interesting to students. When they come back to you with questions or show a keen interest, you know that you are reaching them.”
And though Dr. Jain says that her Ph. D in International Economics has opened new avenues for her, she gets true satisfaction from working with students and making a change in their lives. She has the fire in her to explore a lot more in areas of research, consultancy and training but imparting her knowledge to students is her driving force. “At Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida we are not just into career coaching. We do our best to enable professional learning and personal grooming in our students. Being closely associated with students as a mentor or in the role of a program director is quite satisfying and stimulating,” she says with the same passion she has for Economics.

Knowledge of management concepts builds a strong foundation for future managers. With practical training they get insights into the corporate world. But if they struggle with Business Communications, they cannot express their ideas and impress. To focus on this key aspect of overall grooming of managers, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore organized a session on Business Communication on 23rd September. Facilitated by Dr. Charu Dubey, Faculty of Business Communication, the session brought together renowned names from Piramal Enterprises Limited and led to an interesting discussion.
Things don’t end in just internships at Jaipuria Institute of Management. The b-school has the culture of helping students go through relevant internships and then assimilate and analyze the experiences to optimize learning. They sit through elaborate SIP presentations in the presence of academicians and industry professionals, who offer valuable feedback. Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore recently organized the activity for its PGDM 2016 – 18 students and it had important takeaways for them. The Placement & Corporate Relations Team invited experienced industry names like Mr. Sanjay Yadav (Hotwax System), Mr. Girish Vasmatkar (CSC Indore), Mr. Prakalp Matta (Kalani Group), Ms. Pallavi Soni (Impetus), Ms. Sushobhita Hirve (Exide Life Insurance), Ms. Jahanabi Goswami (Impetus), Mr. Vibhraant Yadav (Eicher), Mr. P. Chandrashekhar (Agility), Mr. Sunny Gupta (Anylinux Work), Mr. Prafful (Equitas), Mr. Kushal Gayakwad (HFFC) and Mr. Ratnadeep Sharma (Wittyfeed) for the big day.
Akshat and Aarushi specialized in Finance and Marketing respectively and were first among students who got placed in Deloitte, besides receiving the highest package of their batch.
The popularity of Digital Marketing made this particular session particularly interesting for the students. Pragnesh spoke about his responsibilities in this exciting field and walked students through aspects of client pitching, proposal preparation, negotiation tactics, and client service. He spoke about how undergraduate specializations do not matter in this field and how important it is to build domain expertise in Digital Marketing for success. He also discussed the current trends such as banner ads, jacket ads, video ads, email marketing, and dynamic emails.
‘A detailed study on the availability and reach of the channels of Discovery Communications India in South and West India’ was the theme of Nimisha’s project. Nimisha had to track the non-availability of the channels in designated weeks and get them functional by talking to the FPRs. “I would start the day by reading news from media industry and carry out data analysis, interpretations, and connect with FPRs to trace any discrepancies. I also did an analysis on chrome data of non-availability of channels and competitor comparison,” she talks about the tasks that brought valuable experience.
Nimisha is a Jaipurian after all! Given that it was her first close brush with the corporate world, especially in the media industry, there were bound to be challenges. Getting feedback from the FPRs was one of the biggest challenges, and required perseverance from her in the form of regular emails, calls and text messages. “But throughout my internship I was there with the belief that I was learning something new through these challenges. I was prepared to work for long hours, do more than what was required and go that extra mile to deliver on my responsibilities,” she adds.
Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore has developed a distinctive mentorship program that assists students seeking additional leadership, be it in the fields of academia or business. This mentorship program combines academic and industry experience to create a bridge for students as they transition from the academic environment to the corporate environment. The goal of the mentorship program is to ensure that students get the most out of their experience at the insitute, while being able to take their acquired school knowledge and transforming it into knowledge that they can take into their corporate life.
