“Jaipuria, Indore has brought about a beautiful transition in me, my attitude and personality. It’s the reason I have transformed from a nervous student into a professional with promise in a short span of time.” That’s how Nikita Gaur begins our interaction. She finds herself on the cusp of an exciting professional journey, having bagged a prestigious placement with the one and only Times Group. Here, she looks back on her enriching journey at the institute and remains positive about the road ahead.

According to Nikita, the unique teaching methodology employed by the institute’s esteemed faculty made her choose the PGDM program at Jaipuria, Indore. She believes it’s the best decision she could have made for her career dreams. “The fully residential program is structured in a way that every student learns in the classroom and beyond it”, she says. “Thus, you are enabled to think outside of the box, which is an important quality for all professionals who want to make a mark in their careers”.

Nikita also agrees that her institute helped her develop the skills that are needed to navigate the professional challenges of an ever-changing Indian economy. It was her industry-readiness that made an impact during the placement interview, which would eventually lead her to bag the coveted job. Talking about the learning experience at her institute, Nikita says, “The faculty members, staff and my classmates are responsible for the massive transformation in me. During the program not only have I learned about management, but there were important life lessons too.”

She insists that she will cherish and draw inspiration from these lessons in her professional journey. Jaipuria, Indore has encouraged her to be an individual. This is evident in the runner up prize she received at the Summer Internship Presentation competition, and also in the Ms. Fresher, Ms. Beautiful awards. The way that Jaipuria grooms its students into well-rounded professionals is what sets this program apart and gives us the edge”. And, looking at others in her field, she says, “I clearly see myself ahead of others who are my age and background that have recently graduated from management programs at other institutes”.

Over the course of two years, Jaipuria, Indore had become Nikita’s second home, one she is going to miss in the future. And, she feels it is important to hold on to the memories that were created during her time here: “There are hundreds of memorable moments during my time at the institute, where I have spent the best phase of my life so far. I am going to miss every moment spent here, good or bad. That’s because I believe even the difficult times were important because they have given me lessons to lead my life better”.

We ask Nikita if she has any advice for her juniors. She encourages them to chart their own path, while also keeping the legacy and rich tradition of their institute in mind. “As a part of the institute you will have access to the best faculty members, amenities and a learning environment that you need to get the most out of” she says. “I would also ask them to keep networking and stay in touch, because life will only become easier no matter where you live”. Her parting words, like her success at the institute, embody ideals that all students should strive to emulate.

Ayush Garg bags second place at an event held by IMA; discusses the beneficial initiatives by Jaipuria, Indore as the reasons behind his success

Ayush Garg, a student of PGDM 2015 at Jaipuria, Indore, recently did himself and his institute proud by bagging the second prize in a research and study event hosted by Indore Management Association. What makes his achievement noteworthy is the fact that his team had to fight off competition from 40 other teams who participated in the first round. Here, he talks about the competition and his passion for CIS, an initiative from his institute.

We begin with his newest achievement, and asked Ayush to elaborate on the nature of the competition. “It was all about a detailed presentation on your research and study performed to understand how we can reclaim India,” he tells us. “through various leadership requirements and convert them into management lessons.” Ayush’s management education gave him a solid foundation to succeed at this event; however, it also showcased another of his great qualities: his leadership.

The thing to note is that Ayush’s team consisted of juniors, which means he had to lead the way. It was a challenge he seemed to relish. He shares with us some of the times during the event where the team had to step up and elevate their approach: “The first instance was when we had to build a conceptual framework, which we then used to frame the overall presentation. Finally, we had to answer the questions posed by the judges during final round, which was challenging.”

There is definitely an air of confidence about the young man, and doing exceedingly well at a prestigious event might have a lot to do with that. But, according to Ayush, it was possible thanks to his learning at his institute: “Some of the things I learned here, including building a perspective on a topic, believing in yourself and presenting your ideas with confidence, helped me immensely through the competition.”

Ayush also talks about the Course on Independent Study, which was introduced as a part of the Jaipuria PGDM curriculum. It offers students an opportunity to study one less subject and carry out detailed research on a chosen topic. “I always wanted to explore and get deep into any particular subject matter, which drove me towards Social Commerce study,” he adds. “It’s a great opportunity for us students and I’m making the most out of it.”

While Ayush awaits the much deserved award (the ceremony is on the 7th of February), he dreams of becoming an entrepreneur and thanks his institute for instilling this belief in him. “Our institute started an entrepreneurship course, and there was the tie up with entrepreneurship promoting organization like NEN,” he says. “I would like to do something with everything we’ve been given, and become an entrepreneur in the education industry.” Ayush has his sights set on the future. And, judging by his early successes and the educational foundation provided by his institute, it is clear that he will reach his goals.

“If u want to learn what business actually is, the best way is to “startup” and learn in the process,” says Dr. Abhishek Nirjar, Director, Jaipuria Lucknow

“The standard general management or the MBA is all set to change.”

It is a privilege to find an academician as deeply immersed in business, as is Dr. Abhishek Nirjar. The incumbent Director of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow, Dr. Nirjar is well pedigreed – both as a student and a teacher. A doctorate in strategy and innovation management from Sheffield University (UK), Dr Nirjar has nurtured an entire generation of Management students from IIM Lucknow, MDI Gurgaon, and FORE School of Management, New Delhi, etc. Yet what fascinates him most, are startups. His direct association with startups is almost as old as his academic career itself.

“I’ve been with startups for 14-15 years now,” says Dr. Nirjar. “I started engaging with startups around 1999-2000. I saw it as a domain where novelty is always going to be created.”

Not surprisingly, he has witnessed ideas and projects by young entrepreneurs, much before they became regular in the world.

“There is this company called Octane Marketing in Delhi that has a technology product for generating mass mailers to the tune of lakhs. They sell it to the companies who have that kind of requirement. I am associated with them on the advisory board. Then there is a company called Fluid Axis based out of Kanpur, started by one of my IIM Lucknow students. They are into Marketing Research and Strategy Consultancy. They have been consultants to a number of small and medium enterprises that operate in very niche areas. They’ve been looking at scaling beyond Kanpur to Delhi and further in North India. That’s the reason I’m constantly in touch with them.”

Not just in the business world, Dr. Nirjar is well-known for incubating startups even in campuses where he teaches. As the Chairman of the Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship Group at IIM-L, he mentored students in launching Gossip and Byte – a snack bar. In time, GnB became a fierce competitor to the college canteen itself.

“If you want to learn what business actually is, the best way is to startup with something of your own and in the process learn . I remember, within 3 months of starting GnB, the participating students were able to see the practicality of each and every subject that they learnt in the very first year; right from Accounting, to Sourcing of funds, Inventory, Negotiating with vendors etc. and obviously – Selling.”
GnB is still a part of the IIM-L campus and has been doing fairly well.

“The best thing about being associated with startups is that on one day the idea is on paper and on the very next, you start seeing it take physical shape. And then you see it grow and of course, the pleasure you derive out of that is phenomenal. Yes there were a few ventures that didn’t work out that well, but that’s what is so great about ideas and execution.”

Incidentally, one of Mumbai’s 3 major online grocers – localbaniya.com – is a startup by Dr. Nirjar’s student, Amit Naik.

“I recall how Amit consciously opted to choose – and work on – his own concept. Everyone was working in groups. In a way, it helped him immensely.”

Dr. Nirjar has a clear plan for Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. He has taken on the responsibility knowing completely well that Brand ‘Jaipuria’ is a major contributor in management education, and holds a lot of promise.

“Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow is easily one of the top B-Schools in UP. My mandate is to see it amongst the‘Top 10’ private business schools in the country. It may seem tough, but I’ve accepted the responsibility because Jaipuria, Lucknow has all that it takes to get there. The academic program, the research, the input of the faculty has to continue being contemporary. Placements are going to be my main focus. Our bonds with the corporate and our alumni, and our ability to leverage this, will be the key to the climb. In the long term, this alone will improve the quality of intake during admissions.”

Dr. Nirjar believes there’s plenty of action coming the startups way, as the economy is headed for a hike. He intends making all the facilities available to students of Jaipuria, Lucknow to help them take off.

“We are going to encourage startups in the virtual world. Digital Media and E-Commerce are not just strong, but are surpassing traditional forms of business.Ventures on these lines can take off from the campus on a sturdy e-platform; all you need is a laptop and you can look to build a business! Currently, 18-20% students at Jaipuria, Lucknow are interested in startups. I’d like to see that grow to 40-50%. I am planning on setting up an incubation entity that can help students develop a relationship with startups within the campus. More students need to think positively about starting something of their own; put in efforts and possibly get much better returns than one may get in a paid job.”

Internationally, there has been a remarkable change in the attitude towards MBA in the past decade or so. Engineers – especially from the IT background – who used to form the bulk of Management graduates are going back to their core. With bigshots in Fortune 50 companies like Google, Apple, IBM have gone on record saying they want core Engineers over any other education, Dr. Nirjar feels that students should view their options carefully before zeroing on the right MBA for themselves.

“I think we are at the cusp of a significant paradigm shift. Some part of it is happening already. The online availability of courses that one may pursue from different university and different set ups are largely available for people who want just a degree. However, as I see it, MBA degree is shifting towards specialist and offbeat courses, niche-sector courses, Analytics, Luxury brand management, and sector-specific courses. Sports marketing or sports management was never important in our country. In just a couple of years, this has changed dramatically. The standard general management or the MBA is all set to witness change in the light of emerging challenges being faced by organisations.”

A recipient of the ‘Career Award for Young Teachers’ – that comes with a Research grant – by the All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi, Dr Nirjar has books on Entrepreneurship Development to his credit. He also has an invited chapter in the book titled ‘Advances in Information Resources Management Volume 6’ published by Idea group, Pennsylvania. He regularly publishes in Indian and International Journals, and is currently managing an AICTE-funded research project on innovation in large firms.

FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Indore

Quality management graduates will see a very high demand over a short term in the next few years, says Dr. Harshavardhan Halve, Director Jaipuria Indore

As a young Asst. Professor with Jabalpur Univesity – also known as Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya, Dr. Harshavardhan Halve was asked if he could take on the task of designing absolutely new computer courses – vocational and Post Graduate Program – in the university. This was the mid-nineties and a Diploma in interdisciplinary areas comprising computer and management was rather new to the Indian context. When he accepted the challenge, little did Dr. Halve know that it would be a defining moment of his career. Not only did he go on to introduce these course in Jabalpur University; the PG Diploma in Computer Management became the first programme in Jabalpur where 60% students were placed.

“I started this program with the aim to narrow the gap between demand and supply of talent,” recalls Dr. Harshavardhan Halve, who has just taken over as the Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management Indore. “For an academician, working for professional education it is essential to gauge market needs in terms of skilled manpower and try to develop new courses to cultivate skills in the aspirants. For example in IT industry the need for business analysts is increasing, as the challenges of expanding markets are increasing. That was the reason of developing a course to enhance skills in the area of business analysis.”

Ever since, Dr. Harshavardhan Halve has earned a name for alligning courses and colleges to industry. As a result, whichever institution he has served, has seen a marked improvement in placements; both in quality and quantity. At SPJIMR, Dr. Halve managed the Master’s in IT program with Virgina Tech, while during his 8-and-half year tenure at IMT, Nagpur, there was hardly any aspect of campus administration that he hadn’t combined with his academic responsibilities.

“Theory and practical are two parallel linesthat don’t often seem to meet each other. Therefore you have to practice the art of alligning them to each other. Academics and Administration are a similar combination and one needs to learn skills of both sides by practicing it simultaneously.”

It is probably for this ability that Dr. Harshavardhan Halve has been singled out to steer Jaipuria Indore.

“Jaipuria Indore is the only campus in Indore which has a national presence,” says Dr. Halve, throwing light on his areas of focus as the Head of the youngest Jaipuria campus.“It boasts of being one of the most modern facilities in the zone. None of the nationally known brands have a presencein Indore. For a PGDM campus, 5 major parameters observed globally – infrastructure and living experience, industry interface, intellectual capital, pedagogy and placements. Take a look around and you’ll see that Jaipuria Indore campus is at par with best B-Schools in India. The only requirement is to communicate this to the community. We want to position ourselves as one of the top B-school of central India and we have already started working towards it.”

Dr. Halve comes to Jaipuria Institute of Management Indore, directly from Goa Institute of Management, where he was the Professor – POM/ IT.

“This shift will give me a chance to own full administrative activity and responsibility. It provides me with the challenge to grow with a national B-school.”

Dr. Halve believes that India has come a full circle. While many view the upswing in the market for core Engineers, Dr. Halve feels that it is only to the advantage of focussed Management professionals.

“In early 90’s India started globalization and privatization and began opening its market to the world. This increased the concept of automation and led to a huge demand for Engineers, IT professionals and MCA’s. In the next decade, the challenges shifted towards effective administration; and hence the unprecedented demand for MBA’s. The market did slow down owing to the global phenomena and now that it is picking up again, it is clearly inclined in favour of innovation and innovative services industry grooming, like Whatsapp, Flipkart, Google, etc. This has again created a need for skilled Engineers and IT professionals. It is for this reason that Engineers and IT professional are shifting to their core education.Yet, the need to manage these industries require far more efficient and effective managers.”

Dr. Halve pinpoints that the demand will be balanced in coming years for both Core Engineering and Management. This in turn, indicates that the management spectrum is due to see a bull run in the short term.

Dr. Shubendra Parihar talks about the academic rigour at Jaipuria, Lucknow and makes some startling revelations along the way

Dr. Shubendra S. Parihar, Assistant Professor at Jaipuria, Lucknow is often referred to as “Mr. Dependable”. A renowned name in industry and academics, he teaches Marketing at the institute and is extremely popular amongst students. The institute focuses on academic rigour for shaping management hopefuls, while ensuring that its faculty members follow interesting teaching pedagogy in the classroom. Dr. Parihar, who also doubles as Chairperson of Admissions, in many ways is the epitome of the teaching philosophies that the institute holds close to its heart.

Dr. Parihar is known for its forthright demeanour and refreshing candour, which is obvious when he admits that the demand for PGDM programs has gone down in recent times. “Like other institutes, Jaipuria Institute of Management has to take measures to make its program relevant to the industry and aspirants,” he says. “There is an initiative of multi-level vetting of the course curriculum of its electives offered. Firstly the curriculum is vetted across all the four campuses then by the industrialists and the practising managers and finally by the alumni.”

According to Dr. Parihar, the role of a PGDM program and the way it is perceived by the industry has changed drastically today. It is a skill development program where recruiters pay 20% attention to content knowledge, while 80% focus is on student skills and persona. That is the reason Dr. Parihar believes that major work needs to be done in this area of overall development of students. He stresses the importance of student engagement programs that gradually help build requisite skills, which is what the industry is looking for.

Dr. Parihar is a passionate academic, who is the first in his family to join the corporate world. But today he also wears many hats given his vast industry experience. He is an avid researcher, having published several notable papers, and is currently working on his book, “Mall and Event Management”. The book talks about how Indian malls are Xerox copies of malls in the US, which don’t make sense in our economic setup. That’s why they have become places to hang out with the family rather than shopping destinations.

This is an interesting and relevant idea for a book, and the solid research it contains has always been a strong point of Dr. Parihar’s work. Research also plays an important role in the academic life of students. Are there steps taken by him to promote research amongst future management aspirants? “Research is an important aspect of both learning and teaching,” he replies “It’s as important for faculty as it is for students. But as faculty you have to read a lot, immerse all your senses in studies and then manage them to get involved in research.”

And how important is industry experience to faculty members? Dr. Parihar offers a clear answer: “To teach business you need to know and experience it. My industry experience definitely gives me an edge in the classroom sessions. You can look at it as added flavour of chutni, achaar and papad to your meals.” The ever-smiling man then talks about his own experiences in the industry and how they have allowed him to help students with their queries and doubts in classrooms.

There are many who believe that the success of a B School depends on the quality of students it has for its programs. As Chairperson of Admissions, how does Dr. Parihar select the right students for his institute? “Besides their past academic skills, students should be judged on their written and oral skills,” he tells us. “Their analytical and decision making skills should be taken into consideration as well. All institutes want the top students for themselves, but things have changed with the demand for PGDM programs dropping. Hence, I focus on students who have high appetite for learning.”
