Tip 1: Make an early start

For some of you, this could be a return to academia from the workplace. While we appreciate the thought behind gaining work experience before attending PGDM, it is equally important to brush up on skills lying dormant like quantitative aptitude and the ability to take notes.

We encourage our students to have pre-PGDM reads (we already have our course pedagogy available), as it would give you a head start if you could glance over the syllabus and the books. It would be beneficial to crack your first semester.

You are joining the program with a lot of knowledge and experience. Don’t let them get in your way of acquiring new knowledge. Learning to unlearn is essential as it helps you grasp new concepts and solve business case studies much better.

Tip 2: Build relationships and make friends

At Jaipuria, we encourage building relationships and growing together. Mentor-mentee, batchmates, roommates, friends, and so on, we wouldn’t like to put a tag on the connections. The more, the merrier. Use the days at the school to network, and just don’t bury yourself in books. Participate in the symposiums and conclaves and make genuine efforts to widen your circle.

Many assignments will involve group work, like, let-it projects, market research, surveys, Business Orientation Programme (BOP), or even your summer internship project reports. It’s fun to do them in groups. Speak with students from previous years and your professors, as you never know who could become a future business partner, advisor, or even a lifelong buddy.

Tip 3: Make the most out of your management graduate status

Pursuing a PGDM program allows you to ask questions, so go ahead and use that card at every opportunity. With market research exercises, you can get interviews, collect data, attend workshops & conferences, and open up opportunities to connect with the founders of organizations. Use the student tag to explore new frontiers, meet business leaders and identify which stream you want to soak yourself in.

Tip 4: Keep Pursuing your Interests, Inside and Outside the Program

A lot will be going on in your PGDM program: assignments, case studies, symposiums, clubs, and so on. We encourage our students to participate in academics to the fullest while exploring and pursuing their latent abilities.

Maintaining your interests and hobbies can help you cope with the academic pressure while bolstering your sense of self as you progress through the program. Also, doing anything unrelated to the PGDM program might help you clear your thoughts and adequately understand the program’s issues.

Tip 5: Make learning fun

Finally, it’s not only about studying. Mix it up from the first day: take a break from reading and listen to some of the finest podcasts for management students; attend lectures, seminars, and workshops; watch TEDx talks and use online learning aids. Explore as many different learning streams as possible so that you may arm yourself with information from a variety of sources.

Let’s Crack the GD

Now that your CAT/MAT/XAT is done and dusted, the next step is to prepare for the Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interviews(PI), since you should receive your interview letters soon. A GD gives even good orators the jitters.

What is a GD? 

A Group discussion as the name clearly states is a discussion on a given topic within a group. GDs are conversational in nature as opposed to a debate where you need to prove your point. In GDs responding with logical, relevant points that add to the discussion or counter the popular arguments is as important as listening to other participants. A good GD is one where all participants in the group get a chance to put forth their ideas.

The most confident of the lot is usually super conscious not to over speak in the GD, and students who find public speaking challenging fear this will pull their scores down.

We have compiled some best practices to enable you to perform to the best of your ability.

Gather your points

Starting a group conversation does give one a head start, but do that, only when you have assembled and organized your thoughts.  Start by speaking clearly to the entire group. Usually, there’s some time given to prepare. Jot down all significant points that come to you. Also, keep in mind any outlier statements you would like to add. There’s a good chance that someone else will speak on the points you have jotted, so you can fall back on the unique points to add value to the discussion. Finally, remember that people will pay attention to you if your arguments are relevant, clear, and concise.

Stay Grounded

When expressing a point, it’s important to have a decent, polite, and respectful tone. For this, one should focus on vocal modulation that is the speed and pitch of one’s voice. Make sure you are not too loud, nor too faint. Do not be in a hurry to get your points over with, neither should you wait until the end of time for a chance to speak. It’s also essential to understand the difference between aggressive and assertive behavior. It is not advisable to engage in one-on-one verbal arguments. However, one can gently disagree with others.

Observe, listen and speak

When the GD is already going on, pay attention to what others are saying and come up with new ideas on the spot to make your case. This will take a lot of work, but this can be mastered with a lot of reading and mock GDs with friends. If you do not get a chance to speak, ask the group for an opportunity to put forth your points. Also, invite others who haven’t had the chance to speak.

If you’re given an abstract topic, think outside the box and develop as many different interpretations as you can. Assessors enjoy hearing alternative points of view and new ways of thinking.

Do not overstep your time

An average GD lasts about 15-20 minutes, thus speaking for 30-40 seconds 5-7 times should be ideal. Think about what you’re going to say before you say it. You’re being heard and assessed. Don’t make the same argument twice or be too long or irrelevant. Intervene respectfully if someone else is traveling down a path that isn’t relevant.

Avoid personal opinions

Personal viewpoints and personal experiences or your observations from them are usually not relevant in a GD. Stick to facts and remain objective throughout the discussion. Make it easier for others to contribute. Don’t just ramble on and on about your personal beliefs. Keep in mind that this is a group conversation. Allow other people to talk as well.

Group discussion is not just for cracking your entrance for MBA admission, but also for conquering your dream job. It helps you overcome your shyness and brings forth your point of view to the forefront. GD enables you to think in fresh and diverse ways. It is a great opportunity to assess and accept altering viewpoints.  GD assists you in gaining a better grasp of your own strengths and weaknesses.

Jaipuria Institute of Management organises 2nd e-Convocation

Jaipuria Institute of management organises 2nd e-convocation on 17th July 2021, 1023 students awarded Postgraduate diploma.

17th July, New Delhi: Jaipuria Institute of Management, India’s top MBA colleges efficaciously concluded its academic sessions of 2020-2021 with its 2nd E-Convocation inviting tremendous participation from graduating students, distinguished guests, faculties, and alumnus across four campuses from the institute. The annual e-convocation was graced by the honorable Chief Guest for the occasion, Mr. Rashesh Shah, Chairman and CEO, Edelweiss Group.

A total number of 1023 students from Lucknow, Noida, Jaipur, and Indore campuses were conferred with their management degrees through video conferencing. Despite the slow economy, Jaipuria Institute of Management managed to place 945+ students across its four campuses in Lucknow, Noida, Jaipur and Indore in leading companies this year and the placement is still on for the rest students.
The graduating batch was offered various coveted roles in E-commerce, FMCG, Retail & Manufacturing, Banking and Financial Services, Insurance, Analytics, and Consulting. Some of the leading corporates include Flipkart, Deloitte, Henkel, HDFC etc.

Addressing the students during the convocation, Chairman, Shri Sharad Jaipuria &, President of Integral Education Society welcomed all the graduates of the 2019-2021 batch and said “The world has gone through a period of inadequacy, change, adjustments but at the same time the world is adapting to the new ways of living, working, sharing and being. Mr. Jaipuria quoted an example of ‘farmer burring a seed but at the same time, it is planted’ instead of feeling buried. The change in learning style and adapting to Zoom is itself an infinite hope, and passed the best wishes virtually to the batch”.

After the welcome address Vice Chairman, Mr. Shreevats Jaipuria shared the progress report of the Jaipuria Institute of Management for the year 2020-2021

“It is my privilege to report the progress of our institution – Lucknow, Noida, Jaipur, and Indore during the academic year 2020-21. In spite of various challenges including the unprecedented time of the Covid-19 pandemic Jaipuria Management institute showed resilience and adaptability in their response and achieved placements close to 90% of its students. We have tried to continuously serve the interest of our stakeholders especially our students during these uncertain times. 230 companies have completed their recruitment process so far including blue-chip and new-age companies. The institution has also received recognition from Indian and international recruiting agencies.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India has ranked our all four campuses among the top 75 and the third campus among the top 100 management institutions in the country including all IITs and IIMs and we look forward to 2020-21 rankings which are going to release very soon. We believe that our students must have global exposure and for the same, we have collaborated with the Ara Business school in New Zealand and a business school in France. In the summer of 2020, when Shivani decided to take admissions for an MBA at Jaipuria Institute of Management, she had a bucket list of things to do on campus.

The one that topped her list was “making memories for life”. But because of the pandemic, her classes were held online regularly until now. Though learning never stopped at Jaipuria, all these months Shivani eagerly waited for the campus to reopen.

So, when Jaipuria Institute of Management decided to reopen the campus from January 2021 for physical classes, Shivani of the PGDM/MBA course 2020-22 batch was more than excited.

“The start of physical classes fills me with excitement and eager anticipation of who will join me in my courses and where our discussions will take us,” Shivani says.

2.24 x 7 Learning Environment: Learning is divided into three phases—pre-learning, learning, and post-learning. Technology enabled online platform is created as part of pre-learning preparations. Flipped videos on core concept building are made available to students. As part of post-learning reinforcement, students can access recorded classroom sessions through mobile app and moodle platform. The classroom learning is a lot discussion and activities based where students take active part in deliberations. Pedagogies adopted in classroom is aligned to promote active learning. It is evident that learning works well for students when conditions are created in pre-phase and reinforced in post-phase. A bit of care and help offered to students in organizing their learning tends to enhance the possibility by several percentage. Jaipuria understands how learning works for students and how it can be made more practical and hands-on.
3.Beyond Classroom Learning: Learning centricity is all about capturing all possible spaces where students tend to learn, both in formal as well as non-formal mode. Research suggests that 40-60 per cent learning for students occur outside classroom. A range of programs designed to sub-serve the goal of learning, fall outside the classroom. This is indeed important as to how we create engagement platforms for students. Opportunities to lead by example, learning-by-doing, and learning-by-watching make students really take charge of their own learning. Platforms such as Hot-Coffee-Hot-Issues where students discuss on current issues over a cup of coffee, WAVE (Written and Verbal English) where students practice spoken and written English, and Seminar where students present their research work to a larger audience do serve duel objective of capturing learning and enhancing confidence. Discussion Forum and Peer Learning activities do tend to bring in contemporariness and opportunity to bring in day-today happenings into the fold of learning.
4.Global Exposure: Learning from global practices, visiting places and meeting people are indeed very critical for developing personal vision. Jaipuria creates ample opportunities for students to develop vision and macro view for their personal growth. Exchanges and visit opportunities have been created under MoUs with top class institutions in France, South Africa, New Zealand, Dubai, Singapore, Finland, Bhutan, and USA. Our students recently visited France, Dubai, Singapore, South Africa and similarly we received students from US, New Zealand, and France. Our students completed summer internship in Bhutan and created e-marketing plan for rural enterprises. Students from France is studying with us for full trimester exchange and similarly our students are scheduled to visit them for full term. The emphasis is on creating long term exchange opportunity for our students.
5.Outlining Graduate Attributes for life-long-learning: Quite unique to to our MBA program, the Graduate Attributes (GAs) are set to define the outcome in terms of what a student would develop in context to knowledge-skill-attitude (KSA). These competencies transcend beyond the program and tend to inculcate life-long-learning in students.. The graduate attributes are brought down and assimilated into what is called Program Level Outcomes (PLOs). This provides a larger picture about the objective of the program and what the program is expected to achieve. This also provides guideline for curriculum design, delivery and assessment of student learning. This mapping also indicates what Jaipuria as a responsible institute is contributing to the life of students in the pursuit of well being of family, society, and the entire nation.

Good attitude, coupled with hardwork helped PGDM’s Sulaxmi of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow come a long way

“There is a thing about trust. It helps you achieve great many things,” believes Sulaxmi, the PGDM graduate of Class 2018 of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. Sulaxmi just bagged herself a placement with Capital First and she couldn’t thank her faculty and mentors enough. For her, “had it not been for their unwavering support and the trust of my mother, the journey would have been incomplete.”

From the moment you start speaking to Sulaxmi, you realize, the humility and simplicity with which the girl approaches life. Thankful to circumstances, friends and kins at every step, Sulaxmi happily sidesteps all the personal effort and hard work she has put in her 2 years of PGDM. When asked, what is it that she wants to do with her first salary that she would be drawing from Capital First as a Associate Credit Manager, she remarks “Family first! I want to send them gifts as token of my appreciation. They need to know how important they have been throughout, for me.”

The Kanpur girl wishes to bring to her organization her undying spirit. “I want to stabilize relationships and enhance the levels of cooperation, collaboration, and trust that exist between people by interacting with others personally, competently, and effectively,” she elaborates.
