Jaipuria Lucknow hosts its 19th Annual Convocation

A Management Institute is evaluated based on the academic performance of its students, student placements and alumni. The excellent student performance during 2013 to 2015 and the alumni produced, was witnessed at the Nineteenth Annual Convocation held on the 2ndof May, 2015, and graced by Shri Bibek Debory, the eminent Indian Economist as the Chief Guest. Chairman, Shri Sharad Jaipuria, Vice Chairman, Shri Shreevats Jaipuria, Director of the Institute, Prof. Ashraf M. Rizvi, the esteemed members of the Board of Governors and the Academic Council of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow, were also present at the occasion.

Shri Sharad Jaipuria welcomed the Chief Guest, other dignitaries and the congregation. Prof. Ashraf Rizvi spoke of the milestones achieved by Jaipuria Institute during the academic tenure of 2013-2015. He extended his warm wishes to the graduation class, while also encouraged them to be goal-oriented and value-based in their approach to life.The Chief Guest, Mr. Bibek Debroy, while congratulating the students for their success, expressed the hope that they “get what they want” in life rather than “want what they get”. Speaking on the subject of education, he emphasized the need for an education system that encouraged entrepreneurship and the need for a transition from ‘licensing’ to ‘regulation’ in the system.

A total of 306 students successfully completed various programs: 2-year full-time PGDM;2-year full-time PGDM (Financial Services);2-year full-time PGDM (Retail Management); and 3-year part-time PGDM programmes. The diplomas were conferred on successful candidates by Shri Sharad Jaipuria, Chairman, Board of Governors of the Institute.The ‘Student of the Year 2015’ trophy was presented to Nikita Mehra for exceptional scholastic performance in the various two-year full-time Post Graduate Diploma in Management program. She was also conferred with the Chairman’s Gold Medal; Angita Bordoloi and Khushboo Jagtiani walked away with the Vice Chairperson’s Silver Medal and Shoumi Bhattacharya was awarded with the Director’s Bronze Medal in the full-time PGDM Program.

Pooja Srivastava was presented with the Chairman’s Gold Medal in Full-time PGDM (Financial Services) Programme and Sarvjeet Kumar Dubey was awarded the Chairman’s Gold Medal in full-time PGDM (Retail Management) Programme. Ananga Das was given the Chairman’s Gold Medal in Part-time PGDM. Three Alumni were awarded the distinguished Alumnus Award.

“Did you forget an answer in your PI or could not speak in GD? Words of advice by Dr. Prabhat Pankaj, Director, Jaipuria Jaipur on how to tackle the situation.”

All management aspirants who want to a bag a seat at a top B School have to navigate the crucial Group Discussion and Personal Interview. These are important opportunities for candidates to make a lasting impression. Dr. Prabhat Pankaj, Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, reveals the secrets that can help students ace the selection process. Shedding light on the importance of the GD he says, “It’s not only meant for assessing the candidate’s knowledge of current affairs, but also to measure his or her ability to respond to their teammates.”

However, he is quick to point out a GD with low intensity participation does not reveal much, while one with hyper and temperamental participants kills the very purpose. That’s something his institute realized early, which led them to begin to focus on Case Analysis. According to Dr. Pankaj, there are several benefits to CA: “CA allows a candidate to live a virtual situation where there is a need for making decisions. The candidate has to take a stand which reveals her/his overall perception, personality, decision making ability, and ability to construct arguments.”

Dr. Pankaj also has advice for those who might not be in tune with the topic of discussion and, therefore, might struggle to make an impact. In those situations, he believes that the best strategy is to wait and listen carefully to the others in the GD before presenting a counter-argument. He states, “The first mover is not always an advantage unless you are able to make a meaningful beginning. There is an ‘interjector’ advantage. An interjector presents contradictions through good examples. There is a ‘leadership’ advantage, wherein one can bring the discussion back on track.”

However, all the efforts made by students in the GD can come to a naught during the Personal Interview. Dr. Pankaj says that’s because the two are completely different processes. “GD is about your ability to put forward points, contextualizing them, and convincing others,” he explains. “The PI does not depend so much on instant preparation, but a lot on how you have been thinking about those questions. Besides that, body language is important: sit straight, look into the eyes of the interviewer while answering questions. Dress appropriately and wear a smile.”

For those who tend to go blank during the interview, Dr. Pankaj has some helpful tips as well. He suggests, “Never look blank, or scratch your hair. The best way is to ask for time to recall the answer. Keep your cool and focus on finding the answer; but if you can’t, accept the fact that, unfortunately, you are not able to recall the answer just now. The interviewer will move on to the next question and it will not be considered a negative, especially if you could answer subsequent questions.” Now, that’s pretty helpful advice that management candidates can benefit from.

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur extends resources to rural learners

On December 14th, Parivartan, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) club of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, in association with Gram Panchayat of Vidhani, organized an Education and Employment Consulting Workshop for students studying in standard VIII and above. This free workshop was held at the Government Secondary School Vimalpura, village Vidhani, and it’s aimed to educate students in rural areas about employment opportunities and making the right choices when it comes to a career path.


The one-day workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Prabhat Pankaj, Director, Jaipuria Jaipur and coordinated by Dr. S. K. Pandey, Dr. Shubha Johri, Dr. Vikas Indoria, Mr. A. K. Tiwari, and Mr. Prakash Sharma. The CSR club student members were in full attendance, participating with their usual interest and enthusiasm. And, they were instrumental in the coordination of the workshop and its activities.


The event began with Jaipuria students extending a warm and traditional welcome to the school children, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat and other family members from the village. They were then told about the aim and vision of the workshop, which was, in the end, a resounding success. Rohit, a student member shared his thoughts: “It was an interesting experience that helped me understand the optimization of resources. We got along famously with the children and the interactions were wholesome and fruitful. The children expressed an overwhelmingly positive response to this initiative.”


Talking about the initiative, Bharti said, “I clearly understood the concepts of identifying gaps and finding solutions through this CSR initiative. Jaipuria Institute of Management is providing free education to children in the village who have great talent but lack awareness due to their low levels of communication skillsand limited access to technology.” Looking at the potential of students, the Institute hasplanned a full course on computer efficiency and communication. The classes will commence soon, with the students of the Jaipuria family having the opportunity to travel to the villages and educate the students about the emerging fields of study and career opportunities.

First International MDP on Financial and Inventory Mangament held at Mumbai conducted by Jaipuria Jaipur

An International MDP for senior government officials of Bhutan was conducted on “Financial and Inventory Management” at Mumbai15-17 December 2014. It was done in collaboration with Institute of Management Studies, Bhutan.

The MDP covered various aspects on Financial and Inventory Management touching upon basics and shared the contemporary trends in the field which was well appreciated by the participants .The MDP was spread across three days .The first two days covered major aspects of Financial management. The day three had sessions on inventory management.

Participants Profile: There were 16 participants in all and they hailed from various National Conservation projects sponsored by the government .They were on positions like Project Accountants, Store In-charges and Officers in various government projects.

Methodology: The three day MDP was held in a very interactive and participative manner. It was designed keeping in mind the expectations shared by them. Lot of group work and case analysis made the sessions very informative and aimed towards specific learning.

Later the participants had field visit where they saw historical monuments in and around Mumbai.
The participants enjoyed being in Mumbai and acquiring knowledge of latest innovations in architecture and technology prevalent in India.

Culture Exchange: It was also an opportunity for us to know about the culture and traditions of Bhutan and while Bhutan is one of the smallest countries in the world, its cultural diversity and richness are profound. As such, strong emphasis is laid on the promotion and preservation of its unique culture. By protecting and nurturing Bhutan’s living culture it is believed that it will help guard the sovereignty of the nation.

Faculty Development Program on “Mentoring the Mentors” hosted by Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur

“God did not create you to be alone. He deposited skills, knowledge, and talents in someone out there who is expected to mentor you, teach you and encourage you to go high…”

A two-day faculty development program on “Mentoring the Mentors” organized by Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur was an effort to revaluate and re-analyse the importance of “Teachers”, as outlined in the above passage. The role of faculty is indeed to teach, inspire, and take students to the next level. It is also proven that having a good Mentor early in one’s career can make a difference between success and failure in any field. Mentoring, therefore, is an important tool that helps us bring the best out of our students so they can reach their goals. With a focus on the aforementioned themes, the two day FDP was successfully organized at Jaipuria Institute of Management. It was beneficial for all who attended, and it offered an opportunity for faculty members to improve their individual mentoring skills, and it helped the institute develop a more effective method of mentor/mentoree organization.

The two day FDP was facilitated by Raj Shankar, Founder Ichiban Consulting Group and an expert on Strategy and Entrepreneurship. The program was attended by Dr. Prabhat Pankaj, Director Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, and the entire faculty pool of the Jaipur Campus along with Prof. Rajesh Sharma of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida.

The program was inaugurated by Dr. Prabhat Pankaj who shared the value of having a Mentoring process in Jaipuria and the importance of effective Mentoring in students’ holistic development. He also shared the history of Jaipuria and its contribution in the field of management education.

Vishnu says, “Jaipuria is equipping me with the competitive edge I need today”

Vishnu Bajania explains what influenced his decision to attend Jaipuria Institute of Management: “In today’s competitive world, technology is developing faster than ever and the demand for skilled and powerful managers is more than the B-schools are able to create. In such a scenario, I chose Jaipuria for my post graduation in management because I was sure it would equip me with the competitive edge I need to succeed today.” It looks like Vishnu made the right decision. He was selected by “bookmyshow” as an accreditation associate for his Summer Internship Project. The institute recognizes the modern pressures and rising competition and has been successfully placing students in diverse industries and roles, enabling them to be industry ready when they step out.

Vishnu has joined “bookmyshow” at a handsome stipend. His basic responsibility is to make accreditations cards for the vendors and staff members who will be there on the day of the IPL match. He shares, “It is a position that requires a lot of hard work. There are hundreds of vendors and staff members from different companies like Pepsi, ITC, IMG, Set max, DDCA etc.” The associates have other responsibilities, too; therefore, they need to have strong multitasking skills. They sort out queries, keep track of the forms, handle the data, attend workshops, and print cards.

The selection process was not easy, and Vishnu believes that Jaipuria gave him the right training that he needed in order to grab this opportunity. He has evolved as a professional in the past year, which has also helped: “I think that my sincerity during the time of interview, my communication skills, confidence and creativity in my resume enabled me to stand out in the interview. We have been trained to stay very organized at Jaipuria, right from day one.” Jaipuria puts a strong emphasis on the holistic development of its students. To ensure a sterling performance during the course and eventually a student’s lifetime, the institute has a robust mentoring process in place. Vishnu has been working with his mentor, Prof. Sonali Singh, Assistant Professor, Jaipuria who has helped him with communication skills, group discussion ability, interpersonal skills and interview skills. He is also helping him design and write his SIP report.

Accountability is one lesson Vishnu has learned in the first few days of his SIP. He believes this is his most important learning so far. And, of course, a happy and ambitious Vishnu is looking forward to his first stipend as well: “I believe in hard work and with this hard earned money, I first want to party!”

Student Deepak Meedha of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur is an entrepreneur by heart and is all set to get his dreams realised

Deepak Meedha, a current PGDM student of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur aspires to have his own event management company someday ‒ that is the motivation that pushes him to make the most out of his education and internship. Born and raised in Rajasthan, he opted for an MBA at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, hoping to turn his dreams into reality. He has made steady progress so far, with the latest achievement being a Summer Internship Project with Pearson that includes a handsome stipend per month along with a work profile he wanted to. Obviously, Deepak is very excited about this opportunity: “I am looking forward to my SIP with Pearson that I have bagged after a stringent selection process. I believe self confidence, work experience and quick response helped me get this SIP. Of course, we are made to learn all these right from first day inside the classroom at Jaipuria. Every assignment subtly underlines the necessity of integrating confidence and spontaneity.” He further adds- “That this is a paid experience adds to its already huge value in my perspective! I am going to share my first pay with my family and am waiting to get started”.

At Pearson, Deepak will be managing events. Just what he wanted! His primary job role includes budgeting and scheduling events. Explaining his responsibility, Deepak states, “I will be working as a team lead with a five member team. Our aim is to positively impact the admission numbers for the organization, as well as ensure branding for it”.

Deepak belongs to Bikaner, Rajasthan. He is an entrepreneur at heart and is striving hard to learn to manage situations and people in a professional role. His decision to join the management program was based on this need, as well as advice from his family and mentors.

Deepak believes Jaipuria Institute of Management is one of the best decisions of his life. Not only is he acquiring the required skills, but he is also being supported to hone these skills in the work environment. “I am continually supported by my mentor from Jaipuria, and during my SIP I plan on continually seeking his guidance. “My SIP gives me the opportunity to understand the dynamics of real corporate rigmaroles,” says Shubham, PGDM, Class 2015 of Jaipuria Institute of Management who is currently interning with Pearson

“I just want to learn as much as I can, in this limited period of two months”, says Shubham Barthwal, PGDM Class of 2015, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, who recently bagged a Summer Internship Project in Marketing and Event Management with Pearson. He is going to be attached with the marketing division during his internship, and will work on Pearson’s brand perception in the market through events specifically targeting children and their parents. Shubham explains the responsibilities of his position: “The objective is to reach the customer where Pearson’s reach has been limited. We will be marketing through events, and the important thing is to manage the event within the purview of the budgets that are allocated to me and my team”. The team gets together in the morning and plans for the day. A lot of time is also spent travelling around the Pearson school campus to understand the target audience and their locality in order to identify the venue for the event. The arrangements are meticulously managed by the team, and events are executed to perfection in the evening.

Shubham has been assigned a mentor Dr. Abhijit Nair, Associate Professor, Jaipuria Institute of Management, to help him optimize this opportunity. He says that there are some differences between the classroom and the corporate world: “Customer perception, sales, marketing are broad concepts, which when we learn in the classroom create an impression that things always have to be done in a particular way; however, in the real world there is scope for alternative ways. One has to be inventive and innovative while remaining knowledgeable of the industry”. A good SIP is a great way to learn, relearn and experiment. “There is a gap between academia and industry so far as student competency is concerned. It is important that the student work closely with the mentor during SIP who helps the student bridge the gap and become relevant in the industry”, explains Dr. Nair.

For Shubham, this paid SIP brings an opportunity to learn outside the classroom. He wants to learn how to adopt effective business practices, and to adapt to different work environments. This SIP has certainly opened the doors to professional world for him: “I feel confident today and want to share this happiness with my family. I am going to buy gifts for my family with my first pay and hopefully all our dreams will come true”.

The recent Industrial visit organized by Jaipuria Jaipur at Ginni International and Richlite Pvt. Ltd. exposed students to plethora of industry practices

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur recently organized industry visits for its students of PGDM Batch 2013-15, which turned out to be an enriching experience for them. The students had the opportunity to visit two reputed industries in Neemrana, Ginni International and Richlite Pvt. Ltd., on March 31st. This experience helped students get practical industry exposure and see how the concepts they learn at the institute are put into practice.

Ginni International Ltd. is a leading textile factory in Neemrana, Rajasthan and focuses on manufacturing denims. The highlight for the company is that 80% of its products are exported while only a 20% are sold locally in India. The company also employs 2000 workers, making a huge difference to the local economy. Richlite Pvt. Ltd., on the other hand, is a newly set up Biscuit manufacturing company, which today is doing its best to grow its market share.

Ginni International was the first stop on the day for students where they were briefed by HR and Training Manager Mr. S. K. Jena. He talked about the task of managing a large workforce and training them to work with the machines. The factory visit was an eye-opening experience for students as they got a chance to witness the process of making Denim and grill fabric. Students also realized the importance of seminars – the company organizes seminars on a regular basis to keep the morale of its workforce high.

One of the students, Ashish Kumar Mishra, pointed out, “We got an insight into the working environment of the company and how it functions. We also got information related to practical aspects of the concepts learned in our programme, which simply cannot be visualized in classroom lectures.” According to student Tuhina Rani, “The chance to interact with industry associates, sharing their views and concerns for workers and the understanding of the production process, made the experience truly worth it.”

The group then headed to Richlite Ltd. where they could witness the process of making biscuits firsthand. Right from converting raw flour through various stages of mixing, moulding, baking, cooling and packing, students observed all the processes involved and gained important insight into them. The General Manager, HR, then talked more about the training program the company offers its employees. Students also learned about motivational initiatives for workers and initial marketing techniques used by the company.

With Richlite Ltd. being a new organization, it was interesting for students to see how it planned to grow in the future. They were told about the long term plans the company has, which made a lot of sense to future management professionals and aspiring entrepreneurs in the group. One of them, Shweta Parihar, had an interesting take on the visit: “We discovered a whole new world today and it made one thing clear; it’s easy to eat biscuits but very difficult to make them.” Clearly, the students had come back with some food for thought.
