Jaipuria Lucknow STUDENT Speaks

Nikita Mehra is thrilled about winning the Student of the Year Award and discusses how her institute prepared her for a professional journey in Finance.

“Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow has been a great experience and the best thing to have happened to me till date. Hence, I wanted to take the moment to thank each one of my faculty team and friends who have supported me on every step of the way.” These are the words of Nikita Mehra, student of Finance and Marketing, who won the student of the year award along with the prestigious Gold Medal. For her, the moment was made truly special because she made her teachers and father, who was present for the Convocation Day, proud of her achievements.

Nikita admits that she had taken a year’s break after her BBA before coming to Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. So, she had to put her head down to get back into study mode and learn from the best. “The institute helped me realize talents that I didn’t know existed in me,” she says. “Who would have thought I would be performing in street plays? I thoroughly enjoyed that and learned from every experience. I would also like to thank my mentors and faculty members who were always accessible to me and guided me through the journey.

For Nikita, the journey with the renowned B School culminated with a placement with Capital IQ, a financial research company. She is filled with excitement about her future role and is raring to go. “The main factor that differentiates Capital IQ from other research firms is the manner in which it presents the data. I am proud to be a part of this company,” she says before adding that she would like to be working with the same company five years from now. But Nikita wants to be respected for her work – for her, esteem is more important than money.

Nikita came to Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow because her friends who had studied at the institute told her about it. On her Convocation Day, she had a new set of friends that she met at the institute hooting for her. Meanwhile, she had realized her dream of making a strong entry into the world of finance. “The institute has state of the art facilities and offers you opportunities to explore real corporate life. You are told how things work and I can see its advantage now that I have started working because I can relate things to every class of mine,” she ends excitedly. This connection between the classroom and corporate life is what the institute strives to impart to students. It is quite obvious that this approach can prepare students for the many demands of a professional career. Nikita, with her student of the year award and prestigious Gold Medal, is a perfect example of the success of this approach to education.

FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Lucknow

“Operations is emerging as a hot employment sector for non engineers as well !”Advises Professor Chib, Faculty Operation Management, Lucknow.

In addition to being a well-known name in academia, Professor Vinod Kr Chib has a lot of industry experience. He has been at Jaipuria for 11 years, and the courses he teaches focus on different areas of Operations, including Supply Chain Management, Logistics Management, Quality Management, Managing Service Operations, and Projects Management.

Prof. Chib is passionate about his area of expertise. Explaining the course, he says, “Operations are all about actions and performing. It involves planning, making decisions and then performing with suitable measures to get the best out of the available resources. If you don’t perform appropriately, you will never get the best results. In one word, Operations is simply the systematic conversion of business plans into reality by action. It focuses on quality production, timely delivery, minimizing costs and wastes and maximizing profits for the individuals or the organization.”

Having spent 24 years in operations, Prof Chib has witnessed key changes in the industry. He believes that quality has become paramount today; he also feels that the customer has grown more discerning. Manufacturers now understand that there is awareness among customers regarding their rights for quality, value for money and timely delivery of any product or services. Therefore, shoddy products and services are completely out of the question in the current scenario.

Often students think that Operations is an engineer’s domain. Dispelling the misconception, Prof Chib says, “The Operations industry is open and has attractive options available for any student with any background during graduation. Operations are at the core of all the activities by Finance, HR and Marketing. The success of various activities, like the collection of the raw materials from the suppliers, sales, delivery of the products at the retailer’s door step, is possible due to appropriate Supply Chain and Logistics Management.”

Professor Chib offers more insight on the job profile of a management trainee employed in Operations. According to him, an Operations manager best fits in the area of Supply Chain and Logistics Management, due to the emerging domain of e-commerce. All major players including Amazon, e-bay, Just-Dial, Snapdeal and Alibaba deal with Supply Chain and Logistics Management and prefer recruiting professionals from the same background. “Even, students from IITs and IIMs are showing their interest and scrambling to join the E-Commerce Sector”, quips Professor Chib.

A dedicated professional, Professor Chib understands the need for an individual to continue learning and improving their professional skills. He is pursuing a PhD in management and encourages students to consider Operations as an emerging career option. He sees the field of Operations growing, and he feels that the job opportunities will continue to be present.

Reading a million papers all life yet not knowing how much goes behind the entire process?

On the 28thof February, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow organised an Industrial Tour to Yash Papers located in Faizabad for the vibrant community of its young managers. The manufacturing plant, which opened its doors in 1981, is owned by Mr. K.K Jhunjhunwala. The plant specializes in manufacturing packaging papers. The company works towards the organizational objective of replacing plastic bags and making a more eco-friendly product that can help improve the health of the environment.

The students were extremely excited about the trip, because they knew that it was an opportunity to see the day-to-day operations of a large business. “‘Time is money” is not only an adage, today it’s the crux of making a business economically viable”, explained Sama Mehdi. “Therefore, businesses prefer to employ students who can quickly bridge the gap between academics and industry”. She thought that the practical experience gave them a good understanding of how the business functions.

Yash Papers is headed by Mr. Ved Krishna, Managing Director. Mr. Krishna runs the paper mill with a focus on a B2B business model. The company supplies packaging paper to almost every food packaging giant in the market, including Pizza Hut, McDonalds, CCD, and even soap packaging industries. The raw materials used are the leftovers of sugarcane and wheat husk. The plant is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and it uses QCS (quality control system) to make sure the paper they manufacture has quality texture and meets the expectations of their buyers. Specialized in making poster papers and craft papers, this mill recycles allwaste that can be utilized. The motto of Yash Papers is “Work more with ideas and make the world more eco-friendly”.

Mr. Krishna believes these industry visits are important for students as they gain an understanding of the hard work involved in businesses: “The more the institutes integrate with the industry, the more the students get to know about the reality and importance of hard work.” Training freshers is a time-consuming task, and this is something that Mr. Sumant Pai, H.R. Head, Yash Papers know well: “It takes time for a new-joiner to adapt. Training and targets are given to the freshers to get acquainted with the system”. Prof. Ankit Mehrotra, Chairperson, PGDM, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow adds that such visits not only give the student an exposure to the business world, but they also add valuable experience to a student’s resume. Linking theory to practical work is often not possible in the classroom, and, according to Dean, Mr.Dheeraj Mishra, these visits fill that gap, At the same time, Prof. R.K. Ojha feels that these visits trigger new thought processes for students :“students get an opportunity to relate their learning with practical operations in the industry. They generate new queries in the classroom and seek solutions for the same.”

The students were thrilled to have the opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and they reiterated the views of their faculty and the industry professionals. “It was an important experience for me”, said Harsh Pandey. “I learned about how a successful company works in synergy, and I learned about the sense of responsibility that all employees have”. Jaipuria continues to train its students in the most industry-relevant manner, creating management professionals who are ready to shoulder any responsibility.

The magical Mumbai Dabbawalas in Jaipuria Lucknow

Write up courtesy: Nikita Srivastava amd Pallavi Tiwari

“They are uneducated, but they are well versed in their job. They are carrying forward a 125 year old system!” Mr. Pawan G. Agarwal, Director Mumbai Dabbawala Education Centre, explained with a smile. He was talking about managing and coordinating the large fleet of dabbawalas in Mumbai. He adds, “For them, work is worship. They are punctual and self-motivated; hence, the job of managing them becomes trouble free”. The interaction took place on the 20th of September, 2014 at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. Mr. Agarwal is hailed as a management guru and international motivational speaker. He has shared his immense insights into supply chain management on various platforms. The session at Jaipuria Lucknow was conducted by CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) and YI (Young Indians). Mr.Pawan G. Agarwal was joined on stage by Mr. Kunwar Himmat Singh (Associate Vice President- Nestle India Limited), Mr. Gaurav Prakash (Chair, Yi Lucknow Chapter), Mr.Divij Narain (Co-chair, Yi Lucknow Chapter and Director Speed Motors Pvt. Ltd), Mr.Alok Shukla (Deputy Director, CII, UP State Office) and Dr. Pankaj Gupta (Director General, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow).

The session began with the guests lighting the ceremonial lamp, invoking Ma Saraswati, the Goddess of Learning. Mr.Vipul V. Gaur, Chair Yi Yuva, Lucknow Chapter, delivered the opening address and invited Jaipuria students to learn from the experienced and knowledgeable guest speaker.

Dabbawala is a person in India, most commonly found in the city of Mumbai, who is employed in a unique service industry. His primary business is collecting freshly cooked food in lunch boxes from the residences of the office workers, delivering it to their respective workplaces and returning the empty boxes back to the customer’s residence by using various modes of transport. The Dabbawalas scripted their own history by a showcase of excellence in customer service for 125 years. They have garnered a lot of global attention from noted personalities, such as Prince Charles and Richard Branson, earned Six Sigma and ISO certification, and, in the process, have become a case study at Harvard Business School.

The Dabbawala Foundation and the Happy Life Welfare Society have now jointly launched a campaign, ‘Share My Dabba’, an initiative to get food left over in dabbas to hungry street children, using just a tiny ‘share sticker’ and the extensive dabbawalanetwork. Every day, 200 thousand children on Mumbai’s streets remain hungry, and every day, 2 of them die of hunger. The Mumbai Dabbawalas deliver 120 tons of food everyday out of which 16 tons is left uneaten. Explaining the initiative, Mr. Agarwal said, “This is where the initiative kicks in. We have distributed a set of stickers that reads ‘share’, with our customers who can stick it on their uneaten dabbas which will then be sorted and shared with the needy.”

Apart from the complicated logistics of delivering dabbas, Mumbai as a city brings with it several challenges like monsoons and public transport. “The dabbawalas”, says Mr. Agarwal, “face every challenge with commitment and enthusiasm. We have a strong determination and for us the ‘Customer is God’, so we try our best to make them happy. Degrees and knowledge are secondary but working passionately is important. Very important. We are not working for Six Sigma but for customer satisfaction. Our main mode of transportation is local trains and still our service remains uninterrupted throughout the year. ” Mr. Agarwal concluded the session with a remarkable suggestion: “Honesty, loving, caring, and being truthful are the qualities not only of a Dabbawalas, but those that should also be practiced by others.”

I am Richard George, and I think from now on the word that describes me the best will be “Jaipurian”. I understand that students of Jaipuria Institute of Management transform their efforts into fruitful results and that’s what I would like to do. I was born in Gorakhpur but raised in Lucknow, so studying on the campus of the institute here has worked out well for me.

I would like to think that I have always been an excellent student, and I was looking for a college that will encourage me to excel further. I found that Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow would be the best place to bring out my talents and transform my personality. I believe it will prepare me for the competitive environment of the corporate world.

The orientation program at Jaipuria, Lucknow was the perfect example of learning while having fun. We had a chance to hear from big names like Mr. Navneet Sakera, Mr. Jagdish Kini and Mr. Achal Rangaswamy. They not only made us question our dreams, but they also broadened our horizons and motivated us to pave the road with hard work to achieve our goals.

We were taught to manage our minds rather than time, which was quite helpful. We also learned to have the right approach to achieve our goals and how to refine our minds to grasp various concepts and ideas. The importance of good communication skills was drilled into us and I believe these are the qualities for true managers who are at the top of their game.

There was an amazing session of “Eagles cocoon and Self-Clarity”, which was very insightful. FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Lucknow

Dr. Shubendra Parihar talks about the academic rigour at Jaipuria, Lucknow and makes some startling revelations along the way

Dr. Shubendra S. Parihar, Assistant Professor at Jaipuria, Lucknow is often referred to as “Mr. Dependable”. A renowned name in industry and academics, he teaches Marketing at the institute and is extremely popular amongst students. The institute focuses on academic rigour for shaping management hopefuls, while ensuring that its faculty members follow interesting teaching pedagogy in the classroom. Dr. Parihar, who also doubles as Chairperson of Admissions, in many ways is the epitome of the teaching philosophies that the institute holds close to its heart.

Dr. Parihar is known for its forthright demeanour and refreshing candour, which is obvious when he admits that the demand for PGDM programs has gone down in recent times. “Like other institutes, Jaipuria Institute of Management has to take measures to make its program relevant to the industry and aspirants,” he says. “There is an initiative of multi-level vetting of the course curriculum of its electives offered. Firstly the curriculum is vetted across all the four campuses then by the industrialists and the practising managers and finally by the alumni.”

According to Dr. Parihar, the role of a PGDM program and the way it is perceived by the industry has changed drastically today. It is a skill development program where recruiters pay 20% attention to content knowledge, while 80% focus is on student skills and persona. That is the reason Dr. Parihar believes that major work needs to be done in this area of overall development of students. He stresses the importance of student engagement programs that gradually help build requisite skills, which is what the industry is looking for.

Dr. Parihar is a passionate academic, who is the first in his family to join the corporate world. But today he also wears many hats given his vast industry experience. He is an avid researcher, having published several notable papers, and is currently working on his book, “Mall and Event Management”. The book talks about how Indian malls are Xerox copies of malls in the US, which don’t make sense in our economic setup. That’s why they have become places to hang out with the family rather than shopping destinations.

This is an interesting and relevant idea for a book, and the solid research it contains has always been a strong point of Dr. Parihar’s work. Research also plays an important role in the academic life of students. Are there steps taken by him to promote research amongst future management aspirants? “Research is an important aspect of both learning and teaching,” he replies “It’s as important for faculty as it is for students. But as faculty you have to read a lot, immerse all your senses in studies and then manage them to get involved in research.”

And how important is industry experience to faculty members? Dr. Parihar offers a clear answer: “To teach business you need to know and experience it. My industry experience definitely gives me an edge in the classroom sessions. You can look at it as added flavour of chutni, achaar and papad to your meals.” The ever-smiling man then talks about his own experiences in the industry and how they have allowed him to help students with their queries and doubts in classrooms.

There are many who believe that the success of a B School depends on the quality of students it has for its programs. As Chairperson of Admissions, how does Dr. Parihar select the right students for his institute? “Besides their past academic skills, students should be judged on their written and oral skills,” he tells us. “Their analytical and decision making skills should be taken into consideration as well. All institutes want the top students for themselves, but things have changed with the demand for PGDM programs dropping. Hence, I focus on students who have high appetite for learning.”

FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Noida

At Jaipuria Noida, despite the multi-dimensional pressures of the turbulent environment around, ‘excellence’ is a continuous journey.

“At Jaipuria Noida, despite the multi-dimensional pressures of the turbulent environment around, ‘excellence’ is a continuous journey. A journey which aligns us together in pooling resources of the institute as well as the people to achieve superior levels of performance and adding value to even to the last member in the Jaipuria family.”

Reflecting back on what Jaipuria Noida achieved during the year 2013, we all derive greater satisfaction in witnessing that the institute not only continued doing its best in core areas of activities, for which Jaipuria Noida is well known, but also could set landmarks of achievements on many new fronts opened up during the year. Some of the highlights are as follows:

For the first time, during 2013, students from over 17 states joined courses at the campus justifying a legitimate national footprint to our institute. Needless to mention that it paved the way for vibrant and richly diversified peer group learning.

Industry developed a greater level of confidence in the skills and capabilities in Jaipurians, as a result, started showing up for campus placements as early as in the month of October ’13. Our students reciprocated well and didn’t disappoint the recruiters. By the end of December’13 companies having diverse needs of the industry, picked up our students in larger numbers. The year created a path breaking trend and contributed to appreciable momentum in placement activities and in turn generated greater confidence in our students.

As far as teaching learning process is concerned, far reaching impacts could be made because of the initiatives taken up by our faculty and staff colleagues who devoted their heart and soul in reaching out to the last student and making them industry ready. The approach was to provide adequate subject knowledge along with outside class room interventions like mentoring and conducting sessions on general awareness, behavioural and communication skills etc. Industry oriented interventions ensured that students perform better in selections and conversions during placements.

Establishing of Centre for MDP and Consultancy was a landmark decision during the year. Conducting over 36 MDPs with PSUs and other private sector organizations within a short period after its inception, was a remarkable achievements made by the MDP Centre.
Commencement of the Ph. D. programme in association with MLSU, Udaipur was yet another highly satisfying achievement, with 10 scholars joining the first batch and with the course work already in progress.
Intensified efforts were made towards internationalization comprising of student and faculty exchange as well as visits by faculty from overseas Universities.
Publication of research papers and award winning Cases in conferences and Ivey publications by faculty members, awards and accolades won by our students in various events outside and initiatives taken in reaching out to the society outside campus boundaries truly established new landmarks in the annals of Jaipuria Noida.

Besides the eminent guests from across industries, media, academia and the government who graced the various successful conclaves and conferences, two significant luminaries in Shri Rajnath Singh ji and Shri Yashwant Sinha ji enthralled the audience with their charismatic presence and words of wisdom they shared. We as a Jaipuria Noida family of faculty, staff and students collectively share the proud moments of these accomplishments of the year 2013. Aspirations drive us as individuals and as professional to excel in life.

Similarly, Excellence is an aspiration for institutions as well. Challenges nevertheless is firstly to define and discover ’excellence’ which is purely contextual. Aligning individual and institutional aspirations towards ‘excellence’ is the second most important challenge. At Jaipuria Noida, despite the multidimensional pressures of the turbulent environment around, ‘excellence’ is a continuous journey. A journey which aligns us together in pooling resources of the institute as well as the people to achieve superior levels of performance and adding value to even to the last member in the Jaipuria family.

Year 2014 is going to be no different in these terms but we are determined to make it different in many other ways which will enable the Institute to scale up higher trajectory of growth and reach closer to a vision of becoming One among the Top 35 B schools in the country in next five years. Creating an environment conducive for Thought Leadership and Research, Industry (society) centered teaching-learning, establishing a Centre for entrepreneurship in its truest form to create entrepreneurs and promote innovation and skill development, Jaipuria Centre for Industry -Institute partnership and Internationalization are few of the identified areas on which we shall be focusing in the year 2014 and ahead. We feel confident that as a vibrant family with well-focused purpose, we shall be making a great beginning in the new year and achieve new milestones in our continuous journey to excellence!
