Industry visit to HPCL plant proves to be a valuable learning experience for students of Jaipuria, Indore

During the Oil & Gas Conservation Fortnight, held between 16 and 31st Jan by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) Indore (LPG bottling) plant, students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore had an opportunity to visit the HPCL plant. The purpose was obvious- students were to be educated on how huge plants function. This perfectly timed visit accomplished just that.

The purpose of the fortnight long celebration is to spread awareness about the conservation of Oil and Gas. Mr. Ravi Bhushan Bhattacharya, Senior Plant Manager, took things further by discussing alternative practices employed by HPCL and its diversified activities to deal with limited resources. He then focussed on LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) properties, usage, and how we can conserve Oil and Gas so that our future generations don’t suffer.

Mr. Anand then took the students around the plant, which is semi-automatic, equipped with flame proof machineries and other fire safety mechanisms. The company spends a total of 55% of total revenue on safety measures, as inflammable materials are involved at every step of the process. During the tour, all aspects of the plant’s activities were explained by Mr. Bhattacharya – from plant safety to the wide range of operations and processes. Finally, he talked about the PAHAL Scheme introduced by the Government, which is being implemented in metro regions. He went through its list of benefits, and how this new initiative affects the lives of locals and energy production of the future.

Students were not only excited to see LPG cylinders being filled at the designated station, but they were also eager to hear that there are several exciting opportunities for them in the field of energy management. As his parting shot, Mr. Bhattacharya asked students, “To realize the practical learning from this industry visit and make the most out of it. I myself have felt invigorated in the company of students so willing to learn.” This surely was a learning experience – students returned from the plant with an insight into its functioning and operations.

“The discipline that Jaipuria taught me has helped me succeed in my career”, says Manpreet Singh Lamba who completed his PGDM from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. A 2010 batch alumni, Manpreet is employed with Mancer Consulting Services, the organization that offered him the position of management trainee during the campus recruitment. Since then, he has grown to the position of Team Lead/Assistant Manager.

Manpreet is convinced that an MBA today can be extremely helpful, especially one received from a good school like Jaipuria: “A college education provides with basic skills. Mr. Yatish Wahaal talks about his meteoric rise and how Jaipuria Institute of Management helped him soar to towering heights of success

Saying that Mr. Yatish Wahaal has done Jaipuria Institute of Management proud would be an understatement. The fact that he is the winner of the first Chairman’s Medal given to alumni of the institute illustrates the significance of his professional achievements. A student of the 2007 batch, Mr. Wahaal remembers the fresh feel of Noida campus, and he credits the institute for giving him the right skills needed to make giant strides in his career. His success has led him to his current position as the CEO and Director of Nayati Healthcare & Research Pvt. Ltd.

Here, Mr. Wahaal talks about his professional growth and his institute’s role in his success. “I am really indebted to the house of Jaipuria because I feel that some of the very basic qualities they have instilled in me have resulted in the achievements that I have made,” he tells us. “It’s the passion for education, and not profits, that drives the institute.” He has, of course, reaped the benefits of his education, illustrated by his placement with Centurion Bank of Punjab. Mr. Wahaal bagged the placement at an interesting time for the bank – it was an in its expansion phase and his placement offered him a tremendous learning experience.

Since then, Mr. Wahaal has worked with Haier Appliance, a Fortune 500 consumer durable company, at a time when it was just setting up a base of operations in India. This was another position that gave him the experience needed to help him on his rise up the corporate ladder. He has also worked on several top rung projects, including the privatization of IPL, a gig for Sultanate of Oman and helping Sahara group acquire the Grosvenor House. He admits that it’s been a rewarding career so far and attributes it to the platform laid out for him by his institute.

Talking about his time at Jaipuria, Noida Mr. Wahaal says, “They offer plenty of scope to students to derive value from their education. Besides classroom learning, we did a lot of case studies, research work and industry visits that were really helpful. One of my most memorable experiences was working with Café Coffee Day with one of our professors. We did a live exercise at one of their outlets and helped create support material, including the idea of a signature CCD tune that worked towards their brand enhancement.”

Mr. Wahaal believes that it was exercises like these that brought him closer to his consulting career, which is his focus in the long run. Today, Nayati Healthcare & Research Pvt. Ltd. does its work in Tier 2 and Tier 3 areas where there is no network of doctors and medical professionals. The idea is to take healthcare to patients in a model that’s economically viable and sustainable. “It’s something I am passionate about and want to do for those around me, Mr. Wahaal says. “I am indebted by the Chairman’s Medal given to me; however, I also look at it as a sense of responsibility.”

Going down memory lane and reflecting on his academic days at the institute is not always easy for Mr. Wahaal, as it fills him with a wide range of emotions: “There are many great memories attached to those times. But, what I appreciate the most was that our institute took our suggestions on board, like when we asked for help in learning a foreign language. Upon this request, the institute quickly organized French lessons for its student body.” And, in a parting shot to current students, Mr. Wahaal says, “The institute offers you a phenomenal platform, make the most of it and avoid taking short cuts.” With his experience, both as a student and a professional, students would be wise to listen to these words.

Jaipuria Indore Placement Update

With the placement season in the last stretch, around 92% of students from Jaipuria Institute of Management get placed successfully

There is still time for the formal closing of the placement season for B-Schools, and Jaipuria Institute of Management has already managed 92% placement across its four campuses. It’s a remarkable achievement simply given the size of the batch: 680 students in its four campuses, of which 626 have already been placed. And, the fact that the placement season has drawn some of the biggest names in the corporate world and resulted in handsome packages for its students is the icing on the cake.

Jaipuria Institute of Management had a solid placement record last year and the bar was already set high. This year, the institute is well on its way to achieving another major feat, and 100% placement by the end of the season might well be in the cards. The possibility of 100% placement was acknowledged by Mr. Amit Attry, VP – Marketing and Corporate Relations, who was present at the press conference organized by Jaipuria, Indore to talk about its placement record.

Jaipuria Institute of Management follows an Uncampus placement process, which ensures centralised recruitment for students across all its campuses. This unique strategy seems to have its rewards ‒ with the help of its strong network of recruiters and alumni, the institute has managed to fetch the phenomenal success. According to Mr. Attry, “To date, more than 230 companies have already visited Jaipuria for recruiting graduates and dozens of them are in pipeline.”

Some of the big names in this year’s placement process are: Deloitte Consulting, Ernst & Young, Grail Research, S&P Capital IQ, KPMG, Nestle, Colgate Palmolive, ITC Ltd, Asian Paints, Berger Paints India Limited, Zomato, Rockstand Digital, HT Media, Axis Bank, Deutsche Bank, IndusInd Bank, Citi Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland, Vodafone, LG, Sony India, Genpact, Tech-Mahindra, Apollo Tyres, JK Tyres, Madura Garments, Hindware, Landmark Group, Orient Electricals and CROMA Retail (TATA Group Company).

Clearly, this shows that a good mix of companies from different fields, including Finance, Retail, FMCG, Consulting and IT, have looked to Jaipuria Institute of Management for a new batch of educated employees. That has offered more options to students, most of whom have managed to bag placements in the field of their choice. Mr. Attry is clearly pleased with the progress thus far: “We are not only happy with the number of recruiters we have got, but their versatile nature as well. It’s something we’ve strived for and the results are showing.”

While many of the students have been placed in Human Resources and Research fields, Marketing and Sales still rules the roost and has been a popular profile offered for students from the institute. Marketing and Sales profiles included some of the highest placement packages. Two students from Noida campus and one each from Jaipur and Indore were recruited by a Digital Media Company for a handsome package of Rs. 8.9 lakhs p.a. The average package for the placement season this year stands at Rs. 4.7 lakhs p.a, even amidst the turbulent economic scenario.

Some of the other important highlights of the placement season this year include the fact that around 15% of students placed had more than one offer in their hands.

While several big name Indian and International companies recruited candidates during the placement season this year, there were a few local companies that managed to get the attention of students as well. For Rashi Singh from Jaipur, the option of working with Jaipur Rugs – a carpet manufacturing company that aims towards creating socio-economic development opportunities for all, was the perfect option. “Besides working for a good cause I will be operating in the area that I am familiar with,” Rashi says.” It will definitely help me in my future endeavours with the company.”

The placement season this year has given students a lot to cheer about, including those who have already been placed and others who might very well be in the near future. Jaipuria, Noida and Jaipuria, Indore seem to be ahead in the race with the number of students to be placed reaching single digits. And, with the kind of companies that are expected to continue to join the recruitment process, things are looking promising for students and the overall placement record of the institute.

Jaipuria Institute of Management has been a leading light in the field of management education in the country since the inception of its Lucknow campus in 1995. Over the years and across campuses in Lucknow, Noida, Jaipur and Indore, the institute has been striving for excellence in education while focussing on an impeccable placement program for its students. And, with the results that are being seen this placement season, all the hard work is paying off for all involved.

“I want to leverage my SIP to learn real life skills”, shares Arpan Ojha, Class of 2015, currently interning with Grasim Industries Ltd.

Arpan Ojha of the 2015 batch has just finished his first year of the course and has been selected for an SIP by Grasim Industries Limited. Arpan is delighted with the opportunity and says, “Grasim is a great chance for me. My selection was based on a personal interview and I feel my work experience of 15 months held me in good stead there”.

Jaipuria Institute of Management assigns mentors to all students in order to ensure that they don’t stagger in front of their SIP challenges. Arpan intends to leverage this help to optimize the work opportunity: “Having a mentor is going to be extremely helpful at this juncture. I am looking forward to seeking her guidance to prepare reports and also to create precise questionnaires for data collection”. Arpan’s focus on the course and SIP comes from the realization that to grow in the industry a professional MBA degree is an imperative. Not only it adds to a student’s profile but also creates the necessary understanding of the industry. He also needed to get a clear knowledge of the sector: “I wanted to understand the inner intricacies and trends of the FMCG sector and, hence, decided to pursue a PGDM”.

Arpan has joined Grasim as an intern and his first assignment will be to identify the challenges and threats in the market for Prim Kitchen Wet Wipes. He will be visiting the shops and dealers of the product to create this report. He will also take on Sales and spend a lot of his time as an intern in the field along with the sales personnel of the organization. He is excited and expects to learn a lot from this SIP: “I am going to try and make the most of this SIP to learn real life skills that will help me perform in my chosen field. The key learning I am looking forward to is learning how to deal with dealers and shopkeepers, how to penetrate into a market with a new product, how to make consumers aware of a product, and, if a competitor is selling the same product at a lower price, how to push the customer to purchase ours instead. I have always wanted to get a hands-on experience to learn all this and more”.

Born and raised in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, Arpan believes the SIP will bring him closer to his dreams – professional as well as monetary. He believes that his hard work and commitment will get him a pre-placement offer of 3-6 lakhs per annum. Arpan is convinced this SIP will open the doors to a magnificent professional life.

Rashi Sharma from Jaipuria, Jaipur gets placement with a local business with a great cause

Having grown up in the Pink City herself, Jaipuria, Japiur wasn’t an unfamiliar name for Rashi Sharma. A few of her friends were already studying there, and she was familiar with the various activities and fests that the institute sponsors for its students. Hence, when she decided to move from her science background to the dynamic world of management, she didn’t have to think twice before joining the institute. And as things have turned out, it’s the best decision she could have taken, especially with the news that she landed a job with Jaipur Rugs- an NGO with the vision of creating a society where equality, justice and peace prevail through socio-economic development opportunities for all.

Jaipur Rugs is a growing local company, and one that gives Rashi a fantastic opportunity to further develop her career. She believes that the strong placement programs at Jaipuria Institute of Management, where students have various options in front of them, is a tremendous benefit. Thanks to that, she will be working in a local company in a position that suits her personality to a T: “I am quite excited about my role as a project co-ordinator with Jaipur Rugs Foundation,” a visibly thrilled Rashi says.

If you ask her about the key responsibilities her job will involve, Rashi rattles off an expansive list: “Part of my job would be identifying, developing, and maintaining strong relationships with funding organizations. I would be assisting with preparing and reviewing grant proposals. I will also be conducting presentations on research work and findings at conferences, which I am quite excited about too.”

Rashi’s time at Jaipuria Institute prepared her well for this position, notably in her ability to be an effective public speaker and presenter. Acknowledging this, Rashi says, “All the presentations I had to make might have seemed like hard work at that point in time, but they were important to build my confidence. We were also made to take part in several activities that worked on our personalities and made us who we are today.”

Rashi will be the first to admit that it wasn’t easy going in the initial stages, especially since she came from a Science background and struggled with understanding management concepts. However, over time and with her dedication, she managed to bridge the gap between science and management. But she’s also mindful of the fact that she would not have managed it without the help of her faculty members who were accessible to her whenever she needed them. In addition, Rashi feels that working with students from different backgrounds also helped her immensely.

As Rashi starts off on her professional journey, does she have any advice for her juniors? “When you are on the job you don’t have time to learn; the time to learn is now,” she says. “All I will ask the juniors is to make the most of the brilliant learning opportunities they have at the institute and go after their dreams.”

Content in corporate governance is more important than its structure and mere compliance to regulatory framework is not governance.” He then went on to urge the youngsters to participate actively in the functioning of corporate governance.

Dr. Pankaj Gupta, Director General, Jaipuria Institutes of Management gave a vote of thanks and the IIC 2013 Souvenir was released. But the gathering’s appetite had just been whetted and they were looking forward to the next sessions with great anticipation.

Mr. N.C. Bajpai, Chairman of State Planning Commission on the other hand said, “As far as corporate governance is concerned, there is a structured internal accountability whereas in state government, we have diffused multi point accountability. Good governance coupled with technology accelerates development, ensures equity and entitlement to people.”

VALEDICTION

In this session, Dr. Anil Khandelwal, Former Chairman and Managing Director, Bank Of Baroda, shed light on how success can be achieved, making his audience sit up and take notice. He said, “Those who do not face rejection will never be entitled to personal growth; facing pain and rejection makes you successful.” He drew on his personal example where he almost lost his job when politicians criticised him for using orange colour in the new logo of Bank Of Baroda. He said it was seen as his allegiance to the BJP. But Dr. Khandelwal was quick to respond to the criticism as he said, “I’ll remove the colour in the logo as soon as you remove the colour in the Indian flag.” Thus he concluded that higher the risk one takes; greater is the chance of gain.

It was the right note for the conference to end as it had been enriching for the participants who were looking forward to take the ideas they learned to their classrooms and future careers. Said Mansi Srivastava “Not every day, do you get a chance to listen to such well known speakers who are experts in various fields. This conference gave us this opportunity and it’s an experience I won’t forget.” And it indeed turned out to me a memorable experience for many.

Innovations are a way of life at Jaipuria Institute of Management

‘Quality before Scalability’ is an oft-heard mantra, but nowhere does this hold as true as in the business education scenario in India. At the turn of the millennium, management institutes were sprouting in every nook and corner of the country. But thirteen years down the line, we notice that very few actually lived beyond a decade. One of those who not only survived but actually thrived – and is today recognised as a formidable brand -is the Jaipuria Institute of Management. Raised in the mid-nineties, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow was established by stalwarts from the domain of education from the pre-independence era. During its fledgling years, the management of Jaipuria Lucknow observed, studied and understood the dynamics of the Knowledge Revolution, and embedded this deeply into its DNA. So, by the time the second campus came up in Noida in 2004, innovations had become second nature to Jaipuria Institute of Management. It is for this reason that Jaipuria is today known for producing managers and leaders who are essentially Knowledge Society compliant.

“Frankly speaking, Jaipuria Institute of Management has come this far only because of its ability to innovate and keep up with the times, and at a very fast pace,” points our Dr. Prabhat Pankaj, Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur. “Student Councils, the Individual Development Plan through a strong mentor-mentee programme, increasing focus on industry connect, taking administrative decision-making right to staff and faculty, 24 x 7 accessibility of academic resources to students through E-learning, and social media tools… all such innovations are deeply ingrained within our DNA now. I strongly believe that in the UnCampus philosophy, our years of innovation have come together under one umbrella. All the four campuses are seamlessly integrated, allowing free exchange of ideas and events, and leading to unprecedented collaboration between students, faculty and staff.”

At Jaipuria, any time is a good time to bring in an innovation; new ideas don’t wait for the next academic year. Come winter, and Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur will be launching the ‘Winter Social Internship’ through which students will be interning with village panchayats or NGOs for a variety of purposes. Many a time, events happening within the campus inspire innovations. For instance, campus life after classes was always interesting, but a couple of years ago, the concept of ‘Life-after-6’was introduced formally, bringing in a series of value added activities. Today, foreign language classes and guitar classes during the 7-8 PM slot are big hits! The ‘Midnight Reading Hub’ is turning out to be another ‘happening’ innovation at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur.

The atmosphere at all the Jaipuria campuses is quite informal, with teachers acting more as facilitators and students being encouraged to think things through. With knowledge easily available through the internet, Jaipuria’s faculty focus more on the emotional aspects of students – acting as friends and guides and always keeping the learning process high on the  ‘fun quotient’.  Therefore, most of the teaching in Jaipuria campuses happens beyond the four walls of the classroom, in lush green lawns or on industry sites.

“Innovations in Jaipuria Institute of Management often are a natural outcome of the needs of the time,” says Dr. Rajiv Thakur, Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. “Technology and this generation’s behavioural choices have a major impact on how education is imparted on Jaipuria campuses. This has led to a paperless mode of education. Infact, the latest Jaipuria campus at Indore is completely digitaland has been from its inception because of the lessons picked up from other campuses. Societal demands ensure that traditional folk art and theatre very often become the medium for imparting education in sections where chalkboards prove to be ineffective.”

Jaipuria’s legacy of pedagogical innovations has now reached the threshold of being a game-changer. This year, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, will be critically examining SIP projects from a completely different perspective. The aim will be to identify atleast half-a-dozen projects that can be ‘game changers’ for the industry and to actually create breakthroughs.

Interestingly, the management of Jaipuria Institute of Management believes that one of the major reasons behind their success is that right from the beginning, everyone within the folds of the Jaipuria campuses believed they worked for a B-school second to none. Belief generates hope, and hope generates enthusiasm and ownership. This ultimately generates outcome. All campuses of Jaipuria Institute of Management are among the top 5 in their respective regions. Jaipuria Lucknow is ranked 4th best among all B-Schools in North India. Riding on its hugely successful legacy of innovations, the management of Jaipuria is quite confident of producing managers who are well ahead of their times.
