The HR Conclave at Jaipuria Noida debated on role of HR- Centre or Circumference

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida is in continuous pursuit of all-round excellence in management education through narrowing the gap between academia and industry. To that end, the HR Club, IPSA, under the area of Human Resource Management organised a day-long in-campus HR CONCLAVE on the theme “HR – Centre or Circumference” on Saturday, 24th August 2013. While addressing a very relevant debate on the topic of HR – Centre or Circumference in the arena of Human Resource Management, the conclave aimed at providing an enriching experience to the student community from within Jaipuria Noida, as well as to sister campuses, particularly those specialising in HR. The conclave was well attended by the students and faculty of the institute, research scholars and members from the media. The attendees were both enthused and enlightened by the captivating speeches, presentations and deliberations of the highly knowledgeable and experienced panel members, who were top HR executives from a wide variety of organisations. They were divided into three panels, namely: HR as Strategic Business Partner, HR as Change Agent, and Contemporary HR Practices. The overall ambience of the carefully readied Auditorium-1 on the ground floor and the expectant mood of the eagerly waiting students of the institute seemed just right for the great day ahead of them. The following is a brief account of the event.

The conclave was inaugurated by the guests of honour, Mr. Gyanendra Singh (COO, Mancer Consulting Services) and Mr. Prashant P. Srivastava (HR Head, Orient Electricals of the CK Birla Group) in the presence of Dr. Rajiv R. Thakur, Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. The conclave was inaugurated with the traditional lighting of the lamp by the esteemed guests.

Dr. Rajiv R. Thakur welcomed the guests of honour and shared his thoughts on the theme of whether HR was in the Centre or Circumference, wherein he introduced theme and sub-themes of the conclave. Mr. Gyanendra, in his inimitable style, eloquently shared his thoughts in terms of how HR leads from the front in managing core HR functions and the value additions done by the HR stakeholders in the process. Mr. Prashant sounded very convinced about HR’s role at the “centre” of many organisations. He advised all HR stakeholders about how to align themselves for the three stages of an employee’s tenure in an organization – -the employee joining an organisation, being in the organisation and then exiting the organization. Both speakers concluded that in order to be in the centre, HR personnel must understand their responsibility towards the business, objectives and mission of the organisation.

After the inaugural session, the conclave proceeded to its first panel discussion on the theme ‘HR as Strategic Business Partner’. Dr. V. P. Singh (ED & Chief Pupil, Devyani International) opened the discussion and said that HR’s strategic role as business partner is more to do with economic value addition in the overall performance of the organisation. He deliberated that in every HR function, right from acquiring employees to their exit, HR people have to continuously ensure value addition. He said that merely knowing and performing HR functions is not enough; one would need to have diverse knowledge of other areas of operations, like production, marketing, sales and distribution. The other panelist, Mr. Rohin Dhar (HR Head, Amplifon India Pvt. Ltd.), engaged the audience by asking their views on how HR plays the role of business partner. While modifying the responses of students, he emphasised that HR professionals should work upon their credibility deficit. He said that HR plays a pivotal role in people planning and their management. Dr. Amar Nath Chatterjee (Adjunct Professor, Jaipuria Noida), while moderating the panelists’ opinions, deliberated that HR should not focus only on profit generation, but also on the growth and development of employees in the organisation. He shared couple of strategic business models which showed how HR could be aligned with the business of an organisation. He concluded the panel discussion by reflecting that that the theme of the conclave, ‘HR – Centre or Circumference’, was like asking him to choose between the head or the heart; in his view, HR embraced every corner of today’s organisations.

The second panel discussion involved stalwarts like Mr. Indranil Mitra (AGM-HR, NTPC) and Mr. Rajeev Kakkar (GM-HR, JK Group). While elaborating on the sub-theme, ‘HR as Change Agent’, both speakers emphasised the transactional and transformational roles of HR and claimed that the latter was the most instrumental in managing and implementing change in an organisation. They emphasised that HR people needed to be part of the change, while understanding the organisation’s needs and their implications. They summed up their thoughts by saying, “People don’t leave an organisation; they leave their bosses”.

The final and concluding panel discussion at the conclave was on the theme ‘Contemporary HR Practices’. Mr. NC Sharma (Director-HR, Country Inn & Suites) talked about the current trends in HR and shred his concerns about how new inventions like competency mapping, etc., were not yielding the desired results. He laid emphasis on bridging the gap between the employees’ skills sets and the organisation’s requirement. Ms. Parul Arora (Freelance Trainer & Academician and Ex. HR Lead, All e-Technologies) talked about performance-driven compensation, employee engagement and revenue generation by HR professionals as the need of the hour. She emphasised the role of the HR team in centre and advised her listeners that to manage HR, one needed to be with people and just not rest back in one’s cubical. Mr. Anshumal Dikshit (HR-Head, I-Gate Solutions) gave as his opinion that HR professionals must keep themselves abreast with the changes rapidly taking place in the economy and in the market. Only after that should they should plan and introduce new interventions in managing HR. He shared current fancy designations in the field of HR, such as “Chief Trouble Officer”, “HR BP”, “Chief Fun Manager”, “Hunter Valley”, etc., in organisations.

The students showed their interest and responded with great enthusiasm while putting up questions to the panelists and guests speakers. The conclave concluded with thundering applause and drew to a close with the vote of thanks proposed by Prof. Abdul Qadir (Coordinator – HR Conclave). Prof. Qadir acknowledged all those who contributed towards the grand success of the day-long conclave, with a special mention for the HR Club bearers and conclave organising committee, IPSA.

Industrial visits start right from Orientation at Jaipuria Jaipur PGDM 2013-15

In the scorching heat of the summer in Rajasthan, we were on a bus on our way to the very first industrial visit of the batch of 2013-15. The bus journey was a wonderful time for all of us to bond with each other. But as we entered the realm of the famed Kagzi industry, the carefree chitchat and random thoughts were replaced by an awed silence. Established in 1996, Kagzi is an ISO approved industry with a turnover from around INR 5 Crore to INR 25 Crore. It is a decades-old industry with export connections in Australia and Europe, setting an outstanding example of how even a small idea, when approached with confidence, can make a huge difference.

The buzz of conversations between 300 craftsmen, the sound of water mixing with the cotton balls, the hum of machines, the vibrant spreads and shreds of papers… all these activities united to make a wondrous spectacle. Clips hanging above drying sheets of handcrafted papers – beyond the reach of our hands – enthralled our eyes with the sheer beauty of colours. We experienced the delight of being in the presence of workers who answered our doubts and queries with humility of true artisans. There were ladies who were expertly sorting out the scraps and clothes, and then boiling and churning the scraps in huge machines with added colour. The scraps were then put on a sieving tray, wrapped on both sides with a cloth and pressed. After pressing, the paper was hung for drying. The excellent craftsmanship and creativity was worthy of praise. The diligence and dedication of the craftsmen towards their craft was truly inspiring for us and we watched them completely engrossed.

The owner, Mr. Mohammad Sharif – an entrepreneur who specialises in manufacturing and exporting handmade paper made from old scraps, clothes and used paper – is truly a great man, making the ‘best out of waste’.

While most visitors restrict themselves to visiting just the manufactured product outlet, the Kagzi factory opened its inner sanctum to the students of Jaipuria Jaipur. For me personally, the printing on the dried paper was the most eye-catching part of the process. We were told that the paper lasts for more than 10 years. Despite going through the entire manufacturing procedure, it was still dazzling to see the final product at the Kagzi outlet.

We returned with many memories that we would hold on to over time… till the next time.

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida enables and empowers rather than teaches,” shares Eureka Dandapath

Eureka Dandapath is a hands-on person. She believes in doing rather than theorising and that’s what she loves the most about Jaipuria Noida. “Jaipuria Noida lays more emphasis on practical application than on theory and for this it brings in the best people from the corporate world as guest lecturers”. An aspiring marketing professional, Eureka completed her B.Tech. in Information Technology from RCEW, Jaipur. Owing to the excellent corporate, academic and industrial exposure that Jaipuria Noida gives to its students, Eureka decided to join Jaipuria Noida to pursue a degree in PGDM (Marketing).

As part of the requirements for her degree, Eureka completed her internship with Wildnet Technology, Noida as a marketing trainee. She worked directly under the Global Marketing Head and believes that this made her learning immense. Throughout her internship, Prof. Nimit Gupta from Jaipuria Noida, who made sure that all her confusions were resolved, ably supported her.

Alumni Speak Jaipuria Lucknow

Anand Kapoor, listed by Forbes as one of the Top 100 Indian Leaders in the UAE, says the seeds of his success were sown during his days at Jaipuria Lucknow

For many, Golf is just another game. For Anand Narain Kapoor, it is the epitome of precision and skill. On the greens, Anand is not just conscious of his own swing, but is constantly gauging the dynamics of the game as well as the immediate and long-term challenges. Golfing sense, for Anand Kapoor, is synonymous with business sense… a business sense that has catapulted him to the Forbes’ list of Top 100 Indian Leaders in the UAE.

“My birth place is in the heart of Uttar Pradesh – Kanpur – and Jaipuria has had a lasting effect on my life. I have done my schooling from Jaipuria School, Kanpur and after my graduation from Christ Church College in Kanpur, I pursued a post-graduation from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. Iwas part of the first batch that graduated from Lucknow in 1995. The college had just been set up, and it was conscious of the factors that constitute good management education and it endeavored to provide the students with a transformational experience. Jaipuria Lucknow gave me the platform to learn the dynamics of the corporate world and empowered me to innovate and establish myself as a successful entrepreneur.”

The 40 year old Indian entrepreneur is currently based out of Dubai. After passing out of Jaipuria Lucknow in 1995, Anand moved to Uganda to work for an East African Bank. After spending time understanding the local business climate, he set up a FOREX bureau in Uganda. In 1999, he purchased a 40 acre site on the banks of Lake Victoria near Entebbe in Uganda and started growing and exporting rose stems. He further consolidated his business by taking over an international school in Uganda. However, the best was yet to come.

His biggest venture to date came with the birth of MiDCOM, the telecommunications arm of the Midland Group. In Africa, he secured the distribution for Nokia in Rwanda and set out to establish a deep distribution network. Alongside growing MiDCOM from 2004, Anand also continued to diversify his business portfolio by foraying into Real Estate. He set up a state-of-the-art commercial complex in Kampala, Uganda, and followed it up with Kololo Greens, some of the most luxurious residential apartments in Uganda. He also initiated a commodity trade division involving sugar, rice, paper and tyres. With a formidable presence in 12 countries, Anand Kapoor’s company is now a prominent player in the Indian, African and Middle Eastern markets. His most recent venture is in the dairy sector, where the group has set up Pearl Dairy Farms. Anand carries his desire to excel over to the golf course as well. He recently lifted the Chairman’s Cup on the 25th anniversary of the Emirates Golf Club in 2013.

“Being a part of the Forbes’ list was certainly on my bucket list; it’s just that I did not expect it to happen so early in life. On the face of it, being listed in Forbes and being awarded amongst the top Indian leaders in the UAE seems like an individual achievement. While it is an incredible feeling and makes me very proud, the fact of the matter is that the credit goes to the entire team whose hard work has enabled my organisation to grow and reach where it is today. In this era of cut-throat competition, focus, competence and passion are the determining factors for success.”

Anand admits that he has been rather bold with some of his business decisions and entered countries where businesses usually fear to operate. But he’s very happy about the fact that he has spent the majority of his professional life making a difference to the African community with his business. He advises the youngsters at Jaipuria that being ‘innovators’ is not enough; a good entrepreneur has to be a ‘dreamer’ and a ‘worker’.

“Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams,” Anand concludes with a knowing smile. “They will take you places.”

Media Relations Club, Jaipuria: An exciting platform

The Media Relations Club at Jaipuria Institute of Management is a student-led initiative that has already become a huge success in its first two years. Set up and followed across all locations -Lucknow, Jaipur, Noida and Indore -the MRC works towards building the Jaipuria brand. Interestingly, it also brings students, alumni, aspirants and corporate houses together onto the same dynamic platform.

In a bid to build brand Jaipuria, students come up with story ideas and feature events on the campus through different mediums, which are then showcased on the website.  Members also manage relationships with different media for campus events and look after the social media properties of Jaipuria.

For Amman Raza, PGDM student at Jaipuria Lucknow, being SPOC (Student Point of Contact) for the MRC was a challenging but satisfying experience. “I always used to look at websites of colleges when I wanted to find out more about them. The student life on campus, in particular, created a perception in my mind,” he says. With the MRC, he got a chance to create similar perceptions and hopes for other aspiring students.

The idea behind the initiative is to give students a chance to be the brand face of Jaipuria. And it does that very well, because MRC members are responsible for the coverage through various mediums. From managing contests for the Facebook page, to creating YouTube videos, their tasks are not only fun-filled but stoke the students’ creativity too.

Moreover, students get a chance to write for the website and get credit for their work. For Nikita Thomas, SPOCat Jaipuria Jaipur,it dovetailed wel lwith her keen interest in writing. “It was a tremendous learning experience working in the MRC with ESquared,” she says, as it made a big difference to her writing skills and overall confidence.

Aman Kumar, MRC member and PGDM student at Jaipuria Indore, recounts his experience as an enriching one, especially since it gave him deep insight into the way media function. Working round the clock and conquering problems are a part of the challenge for him and Taranjit Kaur, faculty coordinator, Jaipur. But Taranjit found “all MRC members hardworking and doing their best within their assigned roles,” which was a huge advantage.

Yes, MRC has clearly defined roles for its members and one can be a campus journalist, photographer, interviewer, video person, social media handler and SPOC/content planner.

Selected members of the MRC get to work under the supervision of the faculty for a year. Dr.Bhavya Raj, who has been teaching in the field of Business Communications, heads the club at Jaipuria Noida. Dr. Raj was particularly thrilled because she got a chance to interact with students outside of class in a “creative and purposeful manner.”

Dr. Raj has big dreams for the MRC; she hopes that big names like NDTV, HT, etc. will increase their coverage of Jaipuria thanks to such an initiative.  After all, the club is also a platform for students to interact with prominent industry leaders. And the way it’s going, Dr. Raj’s goals look like a distinct possibility.
