Jaipuria Director Dr. Halve encourages students to look at Entrepreneurship as a career option

“Entrepreneurship is a mindset”, says Dr. Harsh vardhan Halve, Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore.“There is no age limit to being an entrepreneur”, he adds. According to Dr. Halve, this is an excellent time for entrepreneurs in India since the country’s economy is growing: “We are in the expansion phase and the world is looking at India today as an expanding market, so why shouldn’t we leverage this opportunity?”

Dr. Halve says entrepreneurship is about creating value from creativity. However, money may not always be the objective – it could also be self-satisfaction: “ Look at Prakash Amte. He is a doctor who has been working for the development of tribal people all his life. His work has translated into a hospital, Lok Biradari Prakalp Davakhana, a residential school, Lok Biradari Prakalp Ashram Shala, and an orphanage for injured wild animals, the Amte’s Animal Ark”. Entrepreneurship doesn’t always mean a multi-million dollar enterprise.

Entrepreneurship, according to Dr. Halve, is sector independent. People often try to do the trendy things; for instance, currently everyone is talking about e-commerce and mobile applications. However, there are creative individuals who are innovating in other sectors as well. The first step is to look within and discover your passion and then identify the gaps in the market in that area and possibly invest and create a business around it. It is the passion, in the end, that derives value: “ I have recently seen an excellent case in the U.S. during my recent U.S. visit, I discovered a brand called ‘Mrs. Fields Cookies’ named after the founder, Mrs. Field. From her childhood, she was passionate about baking cookies and her cookies would always have a very fresh smell. Fortunately, she got married to an economist who was working with Stanford University, and he encouraged her to convert it into a business. He focused on the joy she felt whenever he or their friends and relatives requested a batch of cookies. The freshness of her cookies became the USP of the business. Today, there are over one hundred stores in five countries and the USP is freshly-baked cookies. After forty minutes, the baked cookies are not served to the customers, since the maximum survival time after cooking is forty minutes. Even without her now, the same smell is being maintained in all these stores. That’s operational excellence.”

However, businesses need knowledge to set up and run. Jaipuria is the only institute that has started an entrepreneurship course as a core course, which is compulsory for every student who is pursuing PGDM. Dr. Halve has created simulation games around the course to help students experience real-life scenarios. He thinks being an entrepreneur is far more satisfying than holding a job, and he says that most people realize this after spending a few decades as an employee. However, he feels that innovation is the true key to a successful and sustainable business, rest is following, which does not create value for the society.

Dr. Halve believes that Indians are slow starters as far as entrepreneurship is concerned – this is, he explains, largely because of the challenges of social security. Our social and economic environment has been a challenge so far and risk-taking has been limited. However, courses like ‘entrepreneurship’ can mitigate that risk and help a creative person manage the business she aspires to.

Jaipuria Institute of Management is all Set to Answer the Demand of around 2 Lakh Business Analysts in the Coming Years

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur recently organized the first workshop on Business Analytics. The two-day workshop had two goals in mind: first, to make students aware of the role of analytics in the industry; second, through several discussions on research approaches, design and processes, and with the help of experts and faculty members from the institute, the workshop tried to delve deep into the world of Business Analytics. Overall, it turned out to be a fruitful exercise with the promise of more to come in the near future.

The theme of the workshop has gained in significance in recent times, especially since media reports state that the Business Analytics industry is functioning on the back of merely 15000 to 20000 professionals. There will be a demand for around 2 lakh business analysts in the coming years. Knowledge of this information forced the workshop to focus on prerequisites for professionals to embark in a career in business analytics and research. Needless to say, the workshop drew the attention of students from both years of the PGDM program.

While Mathematics, Statistics and IT skills have been a stronghold of Indian students, there is a need to combine business analytics with their computational abilities. That was the great benefit of the workshop – it did everything in its power to equip participants with the knowledge, skills and tools to make it as a business analyst. From applications of business analytics to understanding the research process, sampling techniques to understanding data and variables, the workshop tried to cover all the important aspects of the field.

Of course, there was a special emphasis on handling real-life industry analytics problems, which was of great help to the participants. To acquaint students with the real world situations, there were expert professionals in attendance, including Mr. Vicky Bansal, Research Manager, Gartner Research and Advisory, India, and Mr. Ashish Sharma, Manager, Copal Amba Research. Dr. Prabhat Pankaj, Director, Jaipuria, Jaipur, also conducted a session along with other faculty members of the institute.

Prof. Prashant Sharma, Coordinator, Business Analytics, delivered sessions on understanding the research process and environment, sampling methods and techniques, understanding the data and variables, and basics of data analysis on SPSS. The informative sessions helped students better understand these important, and relevant, concepts. Dr. S. K. Pandey, Assistant Professor, Jaipuria, Jaipur, focussed on the optimization for Google searches. He also highlighted various academic and industry data sources that can aid students in their education and professional careers. Then it was Mr. Pankaj’s turn to lead a review session, which, of course, was quite helpful, as he managed to engage students by creating a live research problem. This prepared students for the following talk on the real-world impact of Business Analytics by leading industry experts Mr. Bansal and Mr. Sharma. They elaborated on the role of analytics and discussed practical industry research problems. As a result, students not only had an understanding of the concepts but valuable insight into the industry as well.

The participants of the workshop returned with their eyes opened about the importance of Business Analytics. They were now looking forward to the next workshop aimed at providing hands on experience on statistical and econometric packages, SPSS, R and E-views. Given the success of this workshop, a lot will be expected of the next one that will be held in October.

I am Richard George, and I think from now on the word that describes me the best will be “Jaipurian”. I understand that students of Jaipuria Institute of Management transform their efforts into fruitful results and that’s what I would like to do. I was born in Gorakhpur but raised in Lucknow, so studying on the campus of the institute here has worked out well for me.

I would like to think that I have always been an excellent student, and I was looking for a college that will encourage me to excel further. I found that Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow would be the best place to bring out my talents and transform my personality. I believe it will prepare me for the competitive environment of the corporate world.

The orientation program at Jaipuria, Lucknow was the perfect example of learning while having fun. We had a chance to hear from big names like Mr. Navneet Sakera, Mr. Jagdish Kini and Mr. Achal Rangaswamy. They not only made us question our dreams, but they also broadened our horizons and motivated us to pave the road with hard work to achieve our goals.

We were taught to manage our minds rather than time, which was quite helpful. We also learned to have the right approach to achieve our goals and how to refine our minds to grasp various concepts and ideas. The importance of good communication skills was drilled into us and I believe these are the qualities for true managers who are at the top of their game.

There was an amazing session of “Eagles cocoon and Self-Clarity”, which was very insightful. The orientation program has given me a fresh perspective on my dreams and filled me with more confidence to turn them into reality. My experience at Jaipuria, Lucknow has been brilliant so far and I believe the institute will bring out the best in me. For me, Jaipuria is a lifestyle and it will shape my future beautifully.”

Jaipuria Indore STUDENT Speaks

“The reputation of Jaipuria Institute of Management precedes itself,” says Richa Puri who hopes to add value to its sterling brand image.

I was pursuing my degree from Bhopal when I heard about Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore. I knew it was a relatively new institute but ever since its inception, the school’s reputation has been growing by leaps and bounds. From my friends to kins, everyone was talking about the new Jaipuria campus of Indore and the quality of education that it has been delivering to its students. When I visited the campus, I instantly made up my mind that this was the institute where I would follow my management aspirations.

The campus made me feel at home. It has been 18 days since I have come here but I have not missed home even once. The orientation program was very helpful and different workshops like theatre, yoga and aerobics have built my personality. My self-confidence has received a major boost already. The ambience of the institute and the activities it undertakes creates a platform for students to learn every step of the way.

The early stages of the orientation programs brought many prominent speakers to the campus. It was brilliant to get an opportunity to learn from such imminent personalities. The faculty members at the institute are guiding us at every step. I think the mentorship program is a nice concept because it helps us understand the basic aspects of being managers, and it outlines ways to improve ourselves individually and as part of a team.

The educational system followed by the institute has interesting concepts of teaching and it doesn’t rely only on bookish knowledge. It grooms our personality as a whole. Every moment I spend on campus I feel proud to be a part of the Jaipuria family. The infrastructure, facilities and resources add to my learning. Jaipuria, Indore has a brilliant brand image and I will definitely try to add value to it.

“Jaipuria Institute of Management is very student-centric”, says Meeta Malik who claims to have found a second home on the Indore campus.

I hail from Jabalpur and have spent most of my life there before I came to Indore for my PGDM. I believe that life is a book and for me a new chapter has started with Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore. I am looking forward to this new chapter because the institute has a unique education culture that gives me the opportunity to evolve at my own pace. It works towards my overall development, and I feel it will make me a better individual.

The 15 day induction program has already brought about a change in me. The session began with helpful advice from experts in the field, and several activities were also conducted for our benefit. The institute has already changed my notions about education because I have realized that it’s not just about classroom learning. I love the fact that the institute focuses on peer learning.

Jaipuria Institute of Management gives you diverse opportunities like IMP CHISEL (winter internship programme), Summer Internship Programme and also IDP (Individual Development Programme), in which every student is groomed to develop his or her overall persona and become a successful manager. We get to learn a lot not only from the experienced faculty members but industry experts as well. Also, I am very excited about the mentorship program where each faculty member is assigned 5-6 students to mould them into future professionals. Undoubtedly, the B-school’s curriculum and daily operations are very student-centric, giving students the maximum exposure and primary importance.

The student life at the institute is fun and engaging. You get to be a part of several activities that are student-driven and work towards building leadership skills. This is the first time I am living away from home, but Jaipuria, Indore has welcomed me with open arms. I have found a new family on the campus.
