FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Noida

“By giving respect and letting go of their fears students find it easy to get participative”

If there is one word that defines Dr. Abhijit Nair, it has to be “Excellence”. He is an Associate professor in Business Communication, practiced Branding and Business Communication in the corporate world for a good 12 years before choosing to shift to academia. He is also involved with placements, training, mentoring and certain clubs that are art or creative based. Dr. Nair continues to be associated with the industry in varied manners of consultancy and hence he brings in certain new trends back from the boardroom to the classroom.

I believe activity induce student to get vigorous, primarily all aspects that involve their world and their needs; When I say ‘their world’ I mean they are mostly in between screens at all times so everything that we do in the class, I try bring the screen into play whether it is to use the app world or to get their attention through moving images.

According to me Workshops are mostly based on Case interview training, communication, leadership and soft-skills. These add impetus to the hard – skills that they have absorbed throughout the year.

Dr. Abhijit Nair loves everything involving communication. He is currently working on a book that he has been trying to complete for some time now. Other than this he had the good fortune to come upon a wonderful story of business interest from the hills of Munnar, Kerala. It is from one the tea plantations there and I reckon, it would be useful for areas like employee engagement, simplified communication and corporate strategy. I hope to complete it by early next year.

I spare about 2 hours for writing all weekdays. Most other times – movies, documentaries, music, sports and a load of reading about all things under the sun, carry me along. Recently I got inclined towards biographies and I am reading about Jack London and Warren Buffet simultaneously.

My teaching philosophy is that I respect each and every individual student whatever they constitute – academically, personality-wise or background. I believe life is wonderful array of mistakes that we slowly thrive to make right.

According to me “Uncampus” brings a constituent of camaraderie between all the four campuses. It brings the culture of family among all members from all campuses and there is collective moving forward that seems to be nurtured, albeit slowly, but that is the best way ahead.

Recently we had a faculty development program at our Noida campus. Dr. Nair shared his experience while saying I had lots of stories to share and to mention to all those people whom I love. I loved the speech of Mr. Nirjar He imparted his experience to us in the form of anecdotes but dotted with some amazing lines that shall stay with me. His intellect was worth imbibing and his narrative was a wondrous experience for a communication professor such as me.

His message to the students of Jaipuria Keep it simple, always

Cause for celebration as Jaipuria Institute of Management awarded the highest ranking by NAAC

Jaipuria Institute of Management, one of the premier groups of B-Schools in the country, recently got accreditation for its Lucknow and Noida campuses as an ‘A’ grade institution. This is the highest ranking given by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Jaipuria has campuses in Lucknow, Noida, Jaipur and Indore. The coveted grade was awarded after an inspection by the NAAC team.

Significantly, the NAAC is an autonomous entity under the University Grants Commission. It rates Universities/ Institutes/ Colleges on various parameters, which include: infrastructure and other qualitative aspects of research and education, teacher-taught ratio (TTR), students’ amenities and placements. Following the NAAC’s assessment, the institution concerned is given a specific rating.

This assessment and accreditation indicates that the institute meets the standards of quality as set by the accreditation agency. It puts a stamp on the fact that it sets high standards in terms of the educational processes and outcomes, the curriculum, teaching-learning, evaluation, faculty, research, infrastructure, governance, and financial well-being and student services. Currently, the NAAC follows a grading model which is: Grade A (very good), B (good), C (threshold) and D (not accredited). Being awarded the highest ranking means that Jaipuria Institute of Management has fulfilled its goal of delivering and promoting the all-round development of its students.

During its inspection, the NAAC team interacted with members of managing committee, faculty, students, recruiters and alumni, and assessed Jaipuria’s commitment towards academic excellence and the overall development of students. Expressing delight over this achievement, Dr. J. D. Singh, Director General, Jaipuria Institute of Management, says, “It’s a matter of great pride that this honour has been bestowed upon us. All the consistent effort put in by our management, faculty, staff and students has borne fruit. Being one of the youngest institutes to be awarded with the highest NAAC ranking has motivated us to work even harder and scale the path of success even higher.”

Congratulating the students on the NAAC accreditation, Dr. Singh said that though it is a result of the combined efforts of all stakeholders, students and alumni have played a significant role in enabling the institute to reach such glorious heights.

Exploring the certainties of uncertainty

If there was one aspect that made the second edition of the JAIPURIA INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT Annual Management Conference (JAMC- 2012) stand out, it was the clarity of purpose. The theme of “Managing under Uncertainty: Paradigms for Developed and Emerging Economies”, was systematically divided into 6 Technical Sessions over two days. Not only did this facilitate a steady flow of knowledge, ideas and information beyond the traditional bounds of management, but it also invited submission in the different categories of Research Papers, Cases, Poster Presentations and Doctoral Research.

Immediately after the inaugural session, the first technical session on ‘Financial and Economic Uncertainties’ was kick-started with an active discussion about the changing financial environment of the world economy and how to survive in that environment. Dr. Rajat Kathuria, Director & Chief Executive, Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) with Mr. Vinod Pande, Sr. Vice President, SBI Capital Markets Limited, and Mr. Pallav Mohapatra, CEO, SBI Cards and Payment Services Pvt. Ltd.

“Major uncertainty lies in interest rates,” opined Mr. Vinod Pande. “If the interest rate is at a peak, corporate houses are unable to move successfully with their projects. When inflation is high, and interest rate is low, then how will projects continue? India suffers from the typical issue of wages being too low in the unorganised sector, and too high in the organised sector. Uncertainty is always high in areas where potential is high; like roads, airlines and the thermal power sector.”

The second technical session very interestingly explored ‘Entrepreneurship & Innovations under Uncertainty’. The Panelists for the session were Ms. Rimi Oberoi, Founder, Oyster Training; Mr. Nitin Gupta, the Co-Founder and CEO of the e-waste management company, Attero Recycling; and Dr. M. M. Akhauri, Former Director-NIESBUD. The message that came out of this session was that innovation is the answer to uncertainty, and that an entrepreneur carries on shooting till he hits the ‘bull’s eye’.

“Problems and issues due to uncertainty are not avoided but converted into opportunities by entrepreneurs,” pointed out Dr. M. M. Akhauri. “Globalisation has brought in greater opportunities in the modern business world. Inflow of technology had taken place considerably. All this can minimise risk and uncertainty to an extent. Information flow has become cheap with the advent of the Internet and is being used very effectively by innovators and entrepreneurs.”

The third and final session on Day 1 of JAMC 2012 brought together stalwarts from both the Government and Private Sectors, like Dr. Manoj Singh, Adviser (Transport)- Planning Commission; Mr. Subir Hazra, Associate Vice President & Head Strategy Planning, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) and Mr. Uday Ravi, Additional Vice President (Engineering), Reliance Infrastructure Limited. The theme was ‘Managing Uncertainties: A view from Infrastructure Industry’. The panelists were unanimous that Infrastructure is the most ‘time-consuming and capital intensive’ of all industries and therefore is as quick to prosper during positive consumer sentiment, and worst-hit when the sentiment is negative. The panelists agreed that the best way to counter uncertainty in the Infrastructure industry was to retain the trust of stakeholders and investors through a credible show.

On the 13th of October 2012, the first among the three power-packed technical sessions was on ‘Changing Marketing Paradigms under Uncertainty’. The popularity of the subject could be gauged by a full house at the Jaipuria Institute of Management auditorium. The panelists included the likes of Mr. Kishore Chakraborti, Vice President- Consumer Insight and HFD, McCann Erickson; Mr. Sanjay Sethi, COO- Enterprise Business Services, Tata Tele Services Limited; Kunwar Himmat Singh, Head- Marketing, Nestle India; and Mr. Rohit Chadha, Sourcing Head – India, Lindstrom Services India Pvt. Ltd.

The fifth technical session of the conference was dedicated to the Sports and Entertainment Industry and participants included Mr. H.P. Singh Rishi, Deputy Director General, Organising Committee (CWG) Delhi 2010; Mr. Debasish Biswas, Vice President- STAR TV; Mr. Devdarshan Chakrabortyy, Director Strategy and Planning, Perfectrelations.com; and Mr. Mehraj Dube, Associate Editor- NDTV India. They all observed that uncertain times were actually good from the perspective of consolidation.

The final session discussed the ‘Evolving human resource landscape under uncertainty’, with the likes of Mr. A P Singh, the former Head of HR, Reliance Petrochemicals; Mr. Rakesh Chaturvedi, HR Head, Food Corporation of India; Mr. Anshumal Dikshit, Head – Human Resources, Patni Computer Systems Limited (and an alumnus of Jaipuria Lucknow); Mr. Rajnish Bawa, Director (Human Resource), New Holland Fiat and Mr. R. P. Singh, Director (HR & Legal)-IFFCO, taking to the dais. The panelists were unanimous that by now HR practitioners have gotten used to the uncertainties and have accordingly prepared themselves for its vagaries.

Barely a few months into the academic session, JAMC 2012 has had a huge build-up at Jaipuria Institute of Management, with students already having witnessed an HR and a Finance conclave. Clearly, with its revamped academic philosophy, the stress in Jaipuria Institute of Management is on bolstering the in-class learning with intense engagement with industry on crucial issues.

Alumni Speak Jaipuria Noida

“I came from the retail industry, not only did Jaipuria Noida prepare me for a much bigger role, but it also ensured that I was ready for the finance and banking industry.”

Prashant Sharma passed out with the latest batch of managers (2012 batch) from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida and has now been placed with Indian Bank as an Assistant Manager. A product of TAFS (The Air Force School), Subroto Park, Prashant completed his BBA from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 2009, but instead of going for his MBA immediately, he decided to get some work experience.

“After my graduation, I worked in store operations with Jumbo Electronics at their outlet in the GIP (Great India Place) Mall, Noida. My role was on the floor, and required round-the-clock interaction with customers. This experience turned me into an extrovert in my professional life. I became quite comfortable about dealing with people from different strata of society.”

After gathering this valuable 13-month work experience, Prashant decided it was time to go for an MBA and take his career to the next level. After carefully going through all his options, he zeroed in on Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida.

“Those were the two most enjoyable years of my life. We worked hard, but partied even harder. In fact, I still remember the subgradation for not having made an 80% attendance. The most enjoyable part was preparing presentations with a group, and regular outings to Shipra Mall. I’m still in touch on Facebook with all my friends.”

Prashant finds his new station in life, as an Assistant Manager in Indian Bank, exciting and challenging. Four months into his job, he is seeing a huge learning curve in understanding different avenues of the banking industry in the effective execution of his tasks. From talking to Prashant, it is evident that his sense of gratitude to Jaipuria Noida cannot be explained in words.

“I came from the Retail industry. Not only did Jaipuria Noida prepare me for a much bigger role, but it also ensured that I was completely ready for the Finance and Banking Industry. More importantly, it gave me the necessary discipline and attitude to make this transition smooth. As a part of the Banking Industry, I deal with a very different group of people, whose needs are financial in nature.”

Prashant feels that Jaipuria Institute of Management’s greatest strength is its ability to make its students competitive. He recalls the numerous occassions on which he was pitted against strong opponents, especially at the NEN (National Entrepreneurship Network) competition.

“The NEN competitions are challenging, and it is a test of creativity, intelligence, out-of-the-box thinking, teamwork, leadership qualities and a burning desire to win. There are more than 200 events over seven days, and the panel of NEN officials judges every college. Events are as per the themeand require the involvement of the Host College, external participants and sponsors. We beat teams from BIMTEC, IIT Delhi, Amity University, Delhi University and the Asia Pacific Institute to become the national champions. Me and my team members – Abhijit, Mitali, Roli, Jaspreet and Vikram – are all recognised as Entrepreneurship Leaders by NEN.”

Prashant is positive that within the next five years he will be able to grow to the level of a Branch Manager at Indian Bank. He firmly believes that Jaipuria Institute of Management has given him all the skills he needs to climb to great heights.

Punarsangam: Jaipuria Institute of Management all campus alumni meet

Jaipuria Noida was decorated grandly. Every light shone bright and the welcome committee were busy with registrations, which grew by the minute after the initial flood of 120 confirmations.
The meet was started by welcoming the Guests and the Alumni with flower, tilak, lighting of lamp & recitation of vandana. It was followed by a welcome speech by Mr. Shreevats Jaipuria –Executive Director ,who welcomed all & said that, “the greatest asset of any institute is it’s people – the students, the faculty, the staff the administration and the Alumnus.” Dr. J D Singh –Director General, in his welcome note said that “the main aim of the Meet is to promote and foster interaction amongst the Alumni, Faculty and present Students and to engage with our Alma Mater in order to raise the college at different levels and also to help fellow Alumni through various initiatives.” Hon’ble Sharad Jaipuria -Chairman of Jaipuria Institute of Management were very happy with the way the event flowed so seamlessly from one element to the next.
The Punarsangam evening of December 10, 2011 was a success . “Punarsangam was the first ever all campus alumni meet of all Jaipuria institutes. I must credit the student organizers for putting up such a grand show at such short notice. I could see the smiles and the joy on our alumni’s faces as they met again. It is so nice that they are all doing well in their careers and are good human beings. Jaipuria’s ideals are upheld, and that is a feather in our caps,” said Mr. Sharad Jaipuria, Chairman of Jaipuria Institute of Management. The event glittered with speeches, games & fun by the Alumni who shared their experiences. They were all very nostalgic about the years that they spent in the college. All were unanimous in echoing their feelings that college has played a very vital role in shaping their destiny.
Faculty organizer, Prof. Poonam Sharma, said, “This was the first alumni meet of the NCR Chapter where students from all the campuses of Jaipuria Institute of Management met, interacted and networked with each other. This also allowed the faculty to interact with alumni from all four campuses.” We wanted to re-establish connection of other alumni with the institute – for example, a Jaipuria Indore alumni working inDelhiwould not be able to attend the Alumni Meet atIndore, but could attend a nearby Jaipuria alumni meet.”
The Jaipuria alumni continue to be in touch with their Alma Mater via guest lectures, placements, contributing articles to the college magazines and judging various Jaipuria Institute’s events. Their institute gives them recognition and a chance to interact with current students.
To attend the 10 December meet, alumni worked around their prior commitments and came in huge numbers. “We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. I think Jaipuria should have many more such events so we can meet our batch mates and see what the current students are capable of & guide them,” said an enthusiastic Alum. “We never had classical dancers in our class. Both Sneha and Bytris are such skilful dancers with effortless grace.” One thing is a given: all Jaipuria students are constant learners. They know that a formal qualification is the doorway to more knowledge.
“The other cultural events were a treat too which included skits, dance, acting, & a band performance by ‘Lafz-e-Delhi’ !” another Alum quips.
Education needs to be all round. Jaipuria Institute’s intention of inculcating values of “commitment, excellence and quality” has successfully impacted its alumni. A good manager is someone whose interests go beyond single minded focus on a career. Jaipuria Noida’s Punarsangam proved just that.

Trimester at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, Fulfills dream for Finnish exchange student

Despite some cultural and communication problems, Finnish exchange student Pirita has enjoyed her stay at Jaipuria Institute of Management. In Finland, Pirita attends the Satakunta University of Applied Sciences, the leading higher education institute in the Satakunta region, located about 240 km from Helsinki on the west coast of the country. The university there has nine campuses, more than 500 staff members, offers 25 degree programmes in Finnish and five in English, and has 6,500 students, with an annual student intake of 1,100.
Satakunta University also focuses on internationality and international co-operation, promoting co-operation between institutes of higher learning, and it was through the student exchange programme that Pirita realized her dream of travelling toIndia. “I have always wanted to come toIndia,” she said, but had fears of travelling alone. Being able to travel in a group with other students provided the ideal opportunity.
With one month left in her trimester of study, Pirita said the experience has been “interesting” and “really nice.”
She’s been able to travel extensively here, visiting such places as Mumbai, Bareilly, Nainital, Mussoorie, Goa and theAndaman Islands, and says she has learned much from the Indian people and Indian culture. There have been some problems with communication and cultural differences – and the school course system here is very different from that in Finland, she said.
But she has enjoyed her stay (her studies centered on inter-credit marketing, management and import-export) and has made friends in India, three of whom have said they would like to come and visit Finland. For students coming here in the future, her advice is to spend some time with the Indian people and get to know them.
