Six Things To Know Before Opting For E-commerce Career After PGDM

In the second installment of the magnum opus, Katappa comes to Bahubali with good news and a bad news. The latter, unpredictable as ever, chooses to see something good in both news items. Now we are going to try and adapt the same positive outlook to post PGDM career opportunities in E-commerce industry. Here’s the good news – the industry is growing and is flush with funds, which means you have plenty of opportunities ahead of you. So what’s the potential bad news? Well, it might not be an instantly rewarding career choice. But hold your horses! If you look at it as the race to the finish, you might have betted on the winning horse.

Let’s look at the evolving Ecommerce industry in detail and what it has in store for you (online store of course). Here are six things that the Marketing faculty pool of Jaipuria Institute of Management listed down for you to know, before you opt for a career in the Ecommerce industry after your PGDM.

1) Opportunities abound: A survey conducted by global market research firm Nielsen a couple of years ago revealed that one fourth of MBA graduates from top tier B Schools preferred a career in e-commerce sector. It has become the second most sought after avenue after FMCG industry and with good reasons too. Ecommerce industry is growing rapidly as consumers are shopping online with gusto. Fresh management graduates have a plethora of opportunities in different areas of Ecommerce.

Point 1

2) Plethora of options to choose from: Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Makemytrip are just some of the big names that have made giant strides in the Ecommerce industry. There are newer players entering the market on a regular basis and they look for professionals who can take on the challenges of the ecommerce industry from Day 1. With your PGDM training you can present yourself as an appealing candidate with these leading on-campus recruiters. The placement season at B Schools has never looked more dynamic.

Point 2

3) Work. Experiment. Learn. Grow: If you opt for a top ecommerce company then you are likely to be working in some of the hippest offices in town. From HR division of the company to Marketing teams, as a PGDM graduate you could fill in several roles with the company. However as the industry is still in its early stages you have to understand that domains, especially at the beginner’s level are porous. But look at the bright side; it gives you the flexibility to gain experience in different areas of interests.

Point 3

4) Crazy promotions on good performance: As a fresh PGDM graduate you might start as a management trainee with a renowned e-commerce venture. But that’ not discouraging in the least bit because the industry offers you immense scope to boost your job profile in a short span of time.

Point 4

5) Lots of room for Creativity: If you are looking for a career option where you will draw attractive salaries from the day one then you should stick to investment banking or other lucrative industries. The rewards of ecommerce industry are not instant, but the possibilities are endless. There are success stories of management professionals who have gone on to bag plum packages in a couple of years. The industry rewards you for thriving on the challenges and proving your mettle. Pick your own Bahubali reference here.

<point 5

6) A risk worth the taking: While the ecommerce industry is definitely here to stay, it is also volatile. Many new companies had to shut shop within a couple of years. It’s a risk, but then as Bahu… no he didn’t, but as the popular quote goes, ‘if you don’t risk anything, you end up risking everything’. Your experience with an ecommerce company, however short it might be, can help you in your future careers. Who knows, you might be encouraged to set up your own ecommerce startup as many PGDM graduates have.

Point 6

Exciting, challenging and full of surprises, Ecommerce careers are all that and more for PGDM graduates. To read more about how Jaipuria Institute of Management prepares you for the Social Media Marketing and E-commerce world, visit: http://www.jaipuria.ac.in/pgdm/pgdm-marketing/

Do you really need to do your MBA to take on a family business? Yes, says Sunny Manglani who has benefited tremendously from the program

Sunny Manglani had his eyes set on taking his family business to a higher level and widening its reach. Contrary to popular advice, which suggested that MBA wasn’t required to head down the entrepreneurial road, he decided to take the plunge. He did his PGDM with specialization in Retail Management from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow in 2015. Today the alum tells us how vital the program has been in his entrepreneurial journey.

Going against popular advice

Sunny’s family runs a thriving garment business with a retail outlet in Lucknow. His well wishers were of the opinion that a PGDM program wouldn’t necessarily help him with the plans he had for his business. But he decided to go ahead and pursue the program. “I think I have realized the true significance of the program only after I completed it. I realized that education is meant for your all round development. An entrepreneur might not need to have specific knowledge in Finance or HR but MBA makes you a complete package,” he asserts.

Making a bid to boost the business

Soon after completing his PGDM from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow, Sunny entered his family business. Though technically it’s a second generation business for him, he counts it as a first generation experience because he has much bigger and new plans for it. “My dream is to change the entire operations of the business from traditional to a more modernized and organized setup. I am working on it and also planning to multiply the number of stores. I feel I am confident and equipped for the challenge thanks to my grooming at the B School,” he adds.

Welcome to the real world

Sunny admits that life as an entrepreneur is filled with challenges that are very different from his student days. However he misses his student years at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow as they were a stepping stone for what followed. He also remembers being a part of the core committer of the student excellence council, which gave him immense exposure. “I believe the two years at the B School are a huge lesson in crisis management. It’s something you are going to rely on in your corporate career or as an entrepreneur. So learn from every experience you will get here,” he concludes.

Alum Rohit Chaudhary was the first from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida to be hired by Barclays Bank

Mr. Rohit Chaudhary, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida alum Batch 2012 was the first management graduate from his B School to bag placement with a reputed international bank like Barclays. In the last five years he has had a prolific career in finance, with the bank and in his new role with Moody’s Analytics. In the same span his bank has recruited almost 25 fresh graduates from his institute. It speaks volumes about the impression he has made with the company, and as he says, also of the growing stature of his alma mater.

Mr. Chaudhary made his presence felt at the recently held alumni meet for the first time. He was thrilled to be a part of the growth of his institute and touched by the respect shown by his juniors. According to him, the alumni-B School bond remains as strong as ever. “I have been closely associated with the Noida campus and so are some of my batch mates and seniors. I know they are closely involved with the placement decisions too. Being in NCR, job opportunities are tremendous, and if you have people in the industry, it works to your advantage,” he says.

He believes, the B School is harnessing this advantage and growing not only in rankings but in industry perception as well. Mr. Chaudhary also credits the contribution of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida in his own career. “I was always interested in Finance and my B School helped me on in the right direction. I used to have discussions with my Finance faculty and that helped me upgrade my skills. It also taught me the best way to express my knowledge of the subject. The faculty members understand your needs and have conversations accordingly,” he says thoughtfully.

Mr. Chaudhary admits that it’s these interactions that keep bringing him back to the campus. And he would like to stay involved with activities at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida as alum. “I think one of the biggest favors the B School did for our careers, is to make us independent. Even during placements while everyone who was interested got placed, you had the option of fending for yourself. I did that through RBS Bank because my B School had instilled the confidence in me,” he explains. And it suffices to say that Mr. Chaudhary has never looked back in his career since.

Sravanti Ivaturi Mishra of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore intends to take the cultural heritage of her B School forward through Communications

There are many reasons Sravanti Ivaturi Mishra is glad that she chose to pursue her PGDM program from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore. After all, she calls them the best years of her life filled with immense learning and experiences that shaped her. But above all she is grateful because the program also worked on her communication skills. As a Public Affairs and Communications coordinator with American Express those skills are her bread and butter today.

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore alum Batch 2011 – 13 reveals how her B School also added an extra dollop of sweetness to her ‘growing up’ experience and made it a whole lot of fun.

Transition from academic to corporate life

Sravanti admits that corporate life is vastly different from academic sojourn, but her B School had prepared her for the challenges she would face. She discusses how her grooming ensured that she can handle different responsibilities in her professional life. “My team handles entire communications for American Express JaPa – Asia-Pacific and the Japan region. We take care of internal, leadership and media communication. I keep going back to my communications classes at the B School to draw inspiration.” she says candidly.

Peer learning on campus

According to Sravanti, one of the hallmarks of studying at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore is the diverse learning environment. Studying in a small batch of 37 students not only brought them closer but helped her understand different cultures better. “It was such a versatile bunch; there was a budding artist, a musician, an IT geek, and a dancer. But they were all so talented and we fed off each other’s energies. Divers backgrounds led to interesting exchange of ideas. As my work involves a wide and diverse geographical region, that experience is quite useful,” she says.

Butterflies in her stomach

It’s not because of any work pressure though. Sravanti is excited to meet her contemporaries at the alumni meet after a long time. She is connected with them over social media and speaks to her faculty members on the phone. But the alumni meet is her opportunity to relive her memories. “I genuinely believe that we should have more such interactions and the responsibility lies with the alumni. Such events will help us take the cultural heritage of the institute forward and for our juniors to follow,” she says warmly.

Alumni from Jaipuria Institute of Management don’t only make their mark in the corporate world; there are many who have carved a niche for themselves with Government companies. Mr. Pankaj Yadav, from Batch 2008 – 10 at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow is one of them. He has had successful career with India Infrastructure Finance Company Limited. Today he is in a comfortable position to look back on things that went wrong and everything that turned out right in his career.

Hit by recession, lifted by learning

Mr. Yadav asserts that he was always interested in Finance, but he graduated at the time the industry was hit by recession. He struggled to find placement but knew that his B School learning will see him through in the long run. “I knew that my learning on the Lucknow campus would be the foundation for my career. It was an amazing experience but the real test comes after the graduation. I worked with State Bank of Hyderabad for two years and now with my current employers I am handling project financing, which is something I love,” he explains.

Building on the knowledge base

While all B School graduates will talk about the significance of practical exposure, Mr. Yadav reminds us that the theoretical learning of concepts in the classroom cannot be overlooked. He backs his argument with his own example where he relied on the theoretical learning to sail through a future course program. “CAIB is a course that’s very important in Finance and Banking industry. I went through the course without any preparation. I was only able to qualify because of everything I had studied during my PGDM,” he adds.

Constant exchange of ideas in classrooms

Mr. Yadav, who was present at the alumni meet, recently held in Delhi, has a special place in his heart for his B School and the time he spent there. According to him, friends, faculty members and stimulating classroom environment were the three crucial aspects of learning at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. “I think my faculty members were amazing as they were always there for me. I got a lot of support and healthy competition from my batch mates. The classroom was always buzzing with ideas and that’s a great way to learn,” he reminisces enthusiastically.

A latest four days' workshop at Jaipuria Institute of Management makes students aware of inside outs of SIP and arms them to make the most out of the opportunity.

The Summer Internship Program (SIP) is arguably the most important stage in the learning process of a management student. Jaipuria Institute of Management, which focuses on creating corporate ready processionals, understands the significance of this bridge between student and industry life. That’s why its efforts go beyond finding its students best internship projects. To help them be prepared for the challenges of the SIP it organized a four day briefing session at Jaipuria, Lucknow between 7th and 10th of March.

Held under the guidance of CMC, the workshop was divided into different segments to streamline various elements of the SIP that students grapple with. Experienced faculty members conducted sessions on wide ranging topics from soft skills to selling attitude, Researched Based Report Writing to Non-researched Based Report Writing. There were domain specific sessions and a session on Do’s and Don’ts during the SIP, which offered students useful tips on how to conduct themselves during their first brush with the real life working environment.

Prof. Kajal Srivastava, Chairperson, SIP and Student Mentoring set the ball rolling by talking about the significance of the program. “SIP is a simulation process which unswervingly directs a student’s way towards the final placements,” she said. Prof. Shubhendra S. Parihar, Chairperson, Placement & Corporate Relations then made students aware of what recruiters look for when they hire students for SIPs. According to him, this understanding is vital for students to present themselves as the best candidates to be hired.

Mr. Anoop Keswani, Deputy Manager Training & Placement highlighted the objectives and learnings from SIP suggesting that it was an avenue for students to understand their interests and become aware of the industry sector. Mr. Sandeep Das, DGM – Corporate Relations & Placements, Corporate Office, JIM urged students to, “Look at SIP as your preparation for final placements. Try and avoid SIPs from your hometown and look for options where you can be offered PPO or PPI.” Prof. Suneel Gupta, AGM, CMS described SIP as a short term experience to make long term career decisions, and an Employability Enhancement Program.

To keep things lively and engaging, a workshop on soft skills was held by Mr. Prabhu Mathur, Manager, Training & Development and Ms. Richa Dwivedi, Deputy Manager, Training & Development. Mr. Anoop Keswani then held an enriching session on Selling Attitude where he addressed aspirants’ fears and concerns in choosing Sales as a career option. A positive attitude helps you cope more easily with the daily affairs of life.” According to him, Sales is 90% conviction and 10% communication of your conviction. It was an invigorating talk that brought the four day session to its half way stage.

Students received further insight on another aspect of SIP as Prof. Shalini Nath Tripathi discussed the differences between research based report writing and non-research based report writing. She also answered students’ questions about report writing at the end of her talk. Prof. Masood Siddiqui, Associate Dean, Research & Publications took the discussion further and highlighted the importance of presenting their reports in the form of chapters and subheadings to drive their points home clearly.

Prof. Pallavi Srivastava held an exciting session that included tips on putting one’s best step forward during the SIP and choosing one based on personal interests.

Things got more interesting as Mrs. Grace Arun focused on a program called GAME, which stands for Grooming, Attitude, Mannerisms, and Expectations. She sensitized the gathering about each of these elements through relatable examples. Mr. Gaurav Sharma’s final session touched upon wide ranging topics including the importance of making formal and informal contacts, matching one’s personality with the choice of work, seriousness and responsibility towards the assigned project, learning from one’s mistakes and presentation of ideas.

The four day SIP Workshop concluded with the prize distribution ceremony of the ‘Best Summer Internship Program Report’. Here one mentee and the respective mentor were presented a certificate and a silver medal for preparing the best SIP report in each mentee group.
