Eminent bureaucrat Anil Swarup draws from his own experiences to illustrate the idea of Leadership to Jaipuia, Lucknow's students

Not often do management students have an opportunity to interact with a high ranking official from the Ministry of HRD. Hence it was a huge privilege for students of Jaipuria, Lucknow when Mr. Anil Swarup, IAS, Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India made his presence felt on the campus on 29th December. He conducted an interactive session with the students, faculty and staff of the B School regaling them with his experiences and inspiring them to achieve their goals.

Anil Swarup is among the Top 35 Action Heroes of India by India Today. The Lal Bahadur Shastri Academy of Administration award winner is also known for his National Health Insurance Scheme.

The welcome address set the stage perfectly for Anil Swarup, who started his talk by sensitizing the audience about the functioning of the government body through real life examples and experiences. He shared his fundamental principle in life to enjoy every moment because you have no control over the future. “You need to have a discerning eye to identify an opportunity and to be judicious enough to avail it and be committed enough to achieve it,” he said urging the audience to make the most of the opportunities they have.

Listening to Anil Swarup talk about the time when he was assigned the task of formulating a
Health Insurance Scheme for the unorganized labor was inspiring and eye opening. He prepared a list of over 300 questions in a bid to cover all the queries anyone would have about the scheme. Through his own example he encouraged students to be curious and dedicated. “It is not essential that you know everything but it’s your desire to learn that matters. Be passionate about what you do especially when you can benefit strangers who need assistance as it is a big high,” he said.

‘Clarity of Thought’, ‘Having a clear cut focus’, ‘Curtailment of Craving’, ‘Discernment of a Kick and Acquisition of the Anticipated Goal’ and ‘Walk the Talk and then Talk’ were his personal mantras that Anil Swarup shared with the audience. He also mentioned working on Monetary Group and focusing on transparency; an important element of work environment. “Today Trust is in short supply and when it grows, you can get work done easily. You have to work on your interpersonal skills to be an effective team player and leader,” he reminded.

In fact, he addressed every student in the audience as a leader and said that leadership is about inspiring team members and treating them as our close ones. Anil Swarup used examples from popular books like “The Secret” and “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari” to drive home his point. “One should be selfish about change if it benefits the organization. There is no such thing as Objective Reality. Our interpretation is just a subjective analysis of the objective reality,” he concluded amidst a huge round of applause.

The interactive Q and A session that followed after the talk was the perfect culmination to what was a hugely informative and motivating day for the students.

Can Management students develop themselves through peer reviews and learning? Jaipuria, Indore's PGDM student Arunava Acharjee from Kolkata tells us how.

When Arunava Acharjee moved from Kolkata to the heart of India to study at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore he had one thing in mind. He wanted to get a dynamic and diverse student experience which would mould him into an adaptable professional tomorrow. On campus he interacts with fellow students from all over the country, who have their unique academic backgrounds as well. For Arunava learning with them and adjusting to different situations is helping him grow, and reach his goals. “Immensely”.

Being at the “centre” of the activity

Although Arunava points out that moving from the East of the country to the center was not a difficult choice, but why did he specifically pick Jaipuria, Indore to pursue his management dreams? “Jaipuria is a good brand name and interestingly the venture started from Kolkata. There is a lot going on in central India today. And when you consider the quality of education offered here compared to the costs, you know it’s a brilliant choice. The return on investments for students is very high,” he says.

Being adaptable to the changes and challenges

Arunava claims that he had never lived in a hostel before and it has been an enriching experience for him so far. While moving to a lush green campus was a plus, dealing with vegetarian food was a tough ask for the Kolkata boy. But thankfully a protein center was set up on the campus and brought a smile to his face.

However Arunava claims that overcoming these challenges is a huge part of his learning experience. “I came here because I wanted to move out of my comfort zone. In some ways it is my preparation to be able to adjust anywhere. Companies look for professionals who are adaptable and ready to work from different places. Now I can say that I am up for that,” he adds.

Being a student again

Before joining Jaipuria, Indore Arunava had worked with Elogix Software Ltd as an Online Marketing executive for over a year. Ask him if his work experience hinders him as a student or has its advantages, Arunava picks the latter. “Work experience is definitely helpful because as a student you don’t know much about corporate culture, which you can now relate to,” he explains.

Arunava then points out to the learning during his Business Communications class that hits home because of the similarity with the work he had done as a professional. “It was exactly the kind of work I was doing but I only understood the full extent of its importance after studying the subject. My work experience helped me understand the concepts better,” he reflects.

Being an ideal classmate

Of course it wasn’t easy for Arunava to get back to studies after experiencing the independence of being a professional. But he insists that studying with peers from different backgrounds helped him slip into the student role. “Working with students from diverse educational, cultural and professional backgrounds is stimulating because there are always new ideas flying around. We are constantly working on projects and assignments, which ends up being an even bigger learning experience,” he states.

Rahul has already managed to use his work experience to his advantage in the classroom. He claims that it has been not only been helpful in understanding concepts but while performing in different challenges as well. “Having the real world experience to fall back on when you are trying to understand new concepts is definitely useful. How is Danish Noor, PGDM, Class 2018 helping in the classroom experience of Jaipuria, Noida and how is the classroom helping Danish?

Never underestimate the power of a diverse classroom!
How is Danish Noor, PGDM, Class 2018 helping in the classroom experience of Jaipuria, Noida and how is the classroom helping Danish?

Danish in Urdu means knowledge and this PGDM student of Jaipuria Institute of management, Noida can very well be seen as someone trying to live up to the meaning his name embodies. Danish came to Jaipuria, Noida with 4 years work experience in his already impressive resume. He left the comfortable cocoon of one metro city in order to adopt and learn from another. One might want to ask- “why Jaipuria Institue of Management particularly?” when Danish also had a host of other B-schools to choose from. Well Danish has an answer!

“One of the highlights of studying at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida is that you get to interact and learn from students from diverse backgrounds.” Interestingly, Danish himself symbolizes the classroom diversity at Jaipuria, Noida to a large extent. How? He is a commerce graduate. He comes from Kolkata. He has four years of professional experience backing his case up further. And oh, if that isn’t enough already, Danish did wade a lot of water in Sales and Marketing in his previous workplace!

Let’s read a bit more about Danish Noor. How is Danish helping in the classroom experience of Jaipuria, Noida and how is the classroom helping Danish?

When things slow down, you take them up a ‘North’

Danish was working with Reliance Capital, Kolkata as a Sales and Marketing Person in Vehicle Financing. But after 4 years he felt he was stagnating and needed a boost to his career. He heard about Jaipuria, Noida from an alum friend, then did his own research and decided to head North. “Jaipuria, Noida has good track record in terms of Placements, Alumni network and Faculties. Adding to that is the peer learning experience. I left my job as a Branch Sales Manager but haven’t regretted that decision even once,” he says.

How is Danish’s work-ex helping Danish as well as his peers?

Danish is of the opinion that your work experience can actually come handy during your PGDM as you can relate to the concepts you learn in the classroom a lot better. He explains, “It is kind of an Experience First, Learn Later phenomenon. Given my prior work experience I can understand how things get done practically in the real world and it helps me during presentations. I hope it helps my batch mates as well because here we learn a lot from sharing.”

Why peer learning is an enriching experience?

Danish admits that just like his batch mates can gain from his professional experience, he benefits by learning with students from different backgrounds. He claims that studying after a gap of 4 years wasn’t easy for him but he has managed with his classmates’ support. “Even in organizations people work in teams and peer learning makes things easier. At Jaipuria, Noida we feed off each other’s energy, ideas, and have our friends’ back, which makes learning here a completely pleasurable experience,” he adds thoughtfully.

Home is where your heart is!

According to Danish, his B School and friends have made him feel at home in a short span of time. While as a professional he wants to build a professional network, be more confident and hone his analytical thinking, he believes as an individual he is making giant strides already. “I believe as a management student you have to be more adaptable to change. Not that I needed to be very flexible here because even though I was some distance away from home I instantly felt comfortable at Jaipuria, Noida. I have been very lucky,” he ends emotionally.

PGDM Class 2017’s Final placement season is underway! How is Jaipuria, Indore getting prepped?

When we say “Be Ready for Realising your dreams” we mean every word by giving you the Be-School that prepares you to Be. A latest instance to that is Jaipuria, Indore’s interactive session with Rishiraj Singh – Head Placements, Jaipuria Group of Institutes. Held on 24th and 25th of November, it was meant to help students align to the upcoming placement season. Both Class of 2017 and 2018.

From day zero of a student’s starting with Jaipuria Institute of Management, the B-school prepares the future managers in every way to make them industry ready. The talk with Rishiraj coordinated by members of Training and Placement Committee encouraged PGDM 2017 and 2018 students to strategically approach companies for recruitments, whether it is for summer internships or for final placements.

Rishiraj made students aware of the best practices followed by other top b-schools such as the IIMs. According to him, “The main role of placement coordinators is to interact with various HRs of the companies, convert as many of them as possible, facilitate and welcome them on campus. You also need to make sure that students have proper interaction with previous batches and know the trends.”

Rishiraj began the session with first years with a task at hand. He asked students to make a list of their short and long-term goals as they prepare for the placement season. He believes career plans can help students choose classes they should take, extracurricular activities, research, so that they are best candidates for jobs. He then emphasized on the importance of Summer Internships and how they can benefit from it while making the best choice at final placements.

In the session with the students of PGDM Batch 15-17, Rishiraj talked about the latest trends followed by recruiters. He helped students understand that, “Today companies are less focussed about the campus and more concerned about the attitude, behavior, and performance of the prospective candidate.” No doubt, to bag a great job, a lot many great things go behind it!

And what’s with first impression? The buzz phrase in the recruiters’ world since eternity has been “first impression”. Rishiraj had some advice on that. “The first impression can affect an interviewer’s attitude towards you throughout the evaluation process. If he feels positive towards you upon first look, he is more likely to listen with a keen interest. So, work on the impression you give out,” he said. Students also realized the huge role their appearance and body language can play in making these first impressions.

The session with Rishiraj who knows the placement process inside out, gave Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore students the necessary understanding, strengths, focus and motivation to prep them up for what’s coming ahead.
