Jaipuria MDP on Empowering Women for Leadership

I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples.
— Mother Teresa

On the weekend of July 15th – 17th, Jaipuria Institute of Management organized a three-day Management Development Programme (MDP) on ‘Stree-Shakti: Empowering Women for Leadership’. Hosted at resort De Coracao, Goa, the MDP saw active participation from 22 senior women officials from various organizations, including Airports Authority of India, Power Finance Corporation, PNB, Central Coalfield, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Mahanadi Coalfield, Goa Shipyard, Power Grid Corporation, Nalco, and IFFCO. The resource faculty for the programme included Ms. Meenakshi Davar (ED-Power Grid), Ms. Manjushree Roy (Administrator & Chief Operating Officer- Sports Authority of India), Ms. Albertina Almeida (a very reputed National Level Advocate) and Ms. Rashmi (a well-known Image Consultant). The programme was inaugurated by Ms. Manjushree Roy and the programme profile was introduced by Mr. YPS Kanwar (VP-MDP&C, Jaipuria). The Programme Coordinator was Mr. Kumar Sri Uttam (Manager- MDP&C, Jaipuria).

Day 1

The first session of the MDP was conducted by Ms. Manjushree Roy who focused on role of women in the changing corporate scenario. According to her, “a woman is the center of the family. She has within her the power to create, nurture and transform herself to lead in the world. It is time now for us to make a difference and affect a mindset change in the male-centric scheme of things and bring about a true socio-economic empowerment of women across regions, religions and classes. We not only can, but we must do this.” Her session included many illustrations from real-life along with practical applications that can be used in the corporate world.

The second session, also conducted by Ms. Manjushree, was on ‘Developing Emotional, Rational and Culturally Inclusive Competencies’. She said “if you love rational thought and are attached to ideas and perceptions, then you tend to despise emotions”. Her session addressed aspects like Ego vs Self-respect, Assertiveness, Interconnectedness and Gender Sensitivity. According to her, “ego is believing yourself to be much better than you actually are and self-respect is knowing exactly how good you are.”

The third session was conducted by Ms. Rashmi on ‘The Power of Personal Appearance’. In this session, she focused on the impact of image we create on others. She emphasised that “personal appearance is an often disregarded part of communication and presentation skills. When we are speaking in public or dealing with a client, we are representing our company and ourselves”. This session included tips on personal grooming, hygiene, and proper attire – all can help create a positive image of an individual.

Day 2

Ms. Meenakshi Davar’s first session was on ‘Maintaining a Work-life Balance and Creating a Culture of Excellence. In this session, she discussed how an individual can balance his or her personal and professional lives in order to achieve excellence. She discussed the various challenges faced by working women and the ways to be an assertive and valuable employee.

The second session was on ‘Moving Forward: The Modern Woman’. According to Ms. Davar, a modern woman is expected to multi-task all the time, given the many priorities in her life, and that support and equality are vital in such a scenario.

The third session was on ‘Building Leadership Competencies and Harnessing their Potential’. Ms. Davar explained that “globalization is rapidly redefining today’s business environment. Significant strategic shifts are transforming the playing field, vast opportunities for growth are emerging at the same time and successful business leaders must shape their organizations to be more nimble and flexible, less hierarchical, and more networked.”

Day 3

The first session was conducted by Ms. Albertina Almeida on ‘Sexual Harassment at the Workplace and Supreme Court Guidelines for the Same’. She explained various laws relating to workplace harassment. In addition, her session on the ‘Domestic Violence Act’ included a discussion on some famous cases.

The second session was on ‘Legislative and Judicial Initiatives towards Women Empowerment’ where she discussed various legal and judicial initiatives for the protection of women.

The workshop concluded with a closing ceremony wherein all participants were awarded their Certificates of Participation by Mr. YPS Kanwar, who also gave the vote of thanks.

Jaipuria Noida Placement Update

Suvendu Acharyya, Jaipuria Noida Class of 2014-2016, on the importance of internship experience in final placements

Suvendu belongs to Kolkata and had completed his graduation in B.Tech in Information Technology from West Bengal University of Technology. The decision to pursue an MBA was driven by his desire to increase his career prospects: “I decided to pursue an MBA as I wanted to have a career growth by enhancing my skills.”

Coming from a middle-class background, there were many important considerations in his choice of institute. “Coming to Jaipuria Noida was a big decision for me and my family as we had a lot of expectations for a prosperous future. My family has invested heavily in my studies and ROI matters a lot to me. Apart from the placement prospects, a good learning environment was a very important consideration. I am glad to say that Jaipuria Noida has fulfilled both expectations.”

The two years (2014-16) spent here have been a transformational journey for Suvendu. “Jaipuria is not only a college for me but a family. I cherished every moment spent with friends. Faculty were so approachable that they made our learning journey easier. Participating in events and clubs was fun and also a valuable learning experience. I changed a lot in terms of improved communication skills and patience, both of which used to be my weakness. There were valuable lessons in every moment. My friends and the library are probably what I will miss the most.”

His internship was with Moon Beverages (Coca Cola) and proved to be a great initiation into corporate roles. “My internship was in the Food and Beverages industry. I was dealing with retailers in Ghaziabad to gauge their satisfaction with Moon Beverages and Coca Cola products.”

The internship experience proved very valuable in his final placements interview process. “The interview experience always shows the bitter truth if one is not prepared. Students need to have lot of general knowledge apart from the textual knowledge. One also needs to articulate the internship work really well. I was tested on sales theory in my personal interview (PI) round. Behavioural aspects were tested by putting me in different situations and there was a stress interview as well.” His advice to juniors is “to be thoroughly prepared with the CV and put more focus in summer internship program (SIP), which is what the questions largely focus on. Also, group discussion (GD) practice is important since a lack of knowledge and inability to communicate becomes ground for elimination”

“I have joined as Management Trainee in Sales with Hindustan Sanitaryware (HSIL) and my key roles will be to visit retailers and explain our products, new launches, schemes which the companies provide, motivate them to increase sales, understand their problems and resolve them. Jaipuria has helped me develop most of the skills I will need for these roles,” concludes Suvendu as we wish him well in his career.

His journey so far has lived up to his expectations. “The initial semesters are really good since you get to learn new management principles and get to know your focus areas, like which specialization is comfortable for you. I have been able to achieve most of my targets. I had planned to achieve a minimum of four live projects and be a part of the Winter Internship program, which I did. I have also conducted a national Finance conclave at my college with the help of my friends and faculty members.”

The faculty aspect is something that Kaustav is particularly happy about. “Faculty and classes are a true delight for every Jaipurian. All the professors are very learned and yet very approachable and helpful,” he says. “This gives Jaipurians an edge over other B-school graduates. Prof. Jagdish Bhagwat and Dr. Manish Shukla are my particular favourites because they are student-oriented faculty members and have helped me in every field with their cooperative nature and great teaching skills.” Kaustav tries to live by the words of his mentor Dr Manish Shukla: “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.”

At Jaipuria Noida I found the two most important things that I was looking for in my B-school

“At Jaipuria Noida I found the two most important things that I was looking for in my B-school – a positively challenging experience and a sense of belonging” says Pooja Singh, Jaipuria Noida Class of 2018.

Pooja is from The Land of Nawabs, Lucknow and despite having a choice of opting for the Lucknow campus, chose to join the Noida campus. “I wanted to explore new places, people, opportunities, and my strengths & weaknesses. Therefore, I came to Noida. Apart from the high profile faculty, good placement records, all-pervading course curriculum, the beautiful campus, there was something else that made me choose Jaipuria. I sensed that feeling of belonging since day-one when I came for the personal interview. Whereas other institutes in NCR that I visited pursued me relentlessly to take admission there, Jaipuria did not have to sell itself to me – the legacy spoke for the institute.”

Her time at Jaipuria has instilled many of the skills she sought and helped her to overcome her reservations. “For me, personality development plays an equally important role as studies. To my surprise there was a specific ‘Personality Development Class’ which turned out to be my favourite. Through these three trimesters, I have gained tremendous confidence. In the first trimester, study group members used to argue about going last in line to present; today they fight to go first – that has been the transition. The live projects I have worked on with Big Bazaar also helped me gain a lot of confidence.” The faculty plays a key role in this development journey at Jaipuria and Pooja is very appreciative of the support she has got from her teachers “One of my favorite finance faculty Mr. Amit Bagga always said that we shouldn’t limit our knowledge to the books and should start expanding our horizon by reading newspapers and magazines. As a result I started reading about eminent personalities, newspaper, magazines and web blogs”. Many other faculty members have helped shape Pooja’s personality and aided in her transformational journey apart from the very helpful role they’ve played in mentoring her on assignments, internships, projects and her course work. By nature, Pooja says she is used to prefer staying in her shell. How far she has come is reflected in what her classmates and friends have to say about Pooja:

Prachi (friend) says “A girl with strong mind and soft heart.”

Tushar Sharma (group member) “Pooja is nice girl and very very hard-working and intelligent also. She always support others.”

Piyush Jain (friend) says “Analytical Thinker, Helping colleagues at workplace and very much dedicated to work. I will not forget to mention her compassion.”

Rohit Deol (friend) said “Purely dedicated to work. A true friend who is always there when you need her. She is always ready to help you.”

Campus life has been truly enriching for Pooja, with its varied experiences. “If I count the friends I have made in a very short time, they include Assamese, Bengali, Pahadi, South Indian, Marathi and others. It’s a great experience to learn about their culture and cuisines. I was amazed when I looked at the diversity of cultures here at Jaipuria- A small India in itself, we can say! ”

“Jaipuria, Noida experience helped me change for the better,”

“Jaipuria, Noida experience helped me change for the better,” says Akanksha Gupta, alumnus of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida (Batch – 2014-2016)

“An MBA is almost a pre-requisite today,” says the Moradabad girl, Akanksha Gupta, alumnus of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida (Batch – 2014-2016). “Having decided that this would be the best platform for better job opportunities, I zeroed in on Jaipuria, Noida,” she says.

Having done her graduation from Delhi University in B.Com (Hons), Gupta sat for the Management Aptitude Test (MAT) in which she scored very well. “With a good score in MAT I was able to choose Jaipuria, Noida over other colleges. But it was a big decision for me and my family as it meant a large investment of money,” she explains. However, as Gupta recalls, her decision paid off, “Jaipuria, Nodia experience helped me change for the better. Regular presentations and public speaking helped me gain confidence and the innumerable projects helped me boost my market knowledge.”

“When I came to this Institute, I wanted to gain corporate exposure and learn skills that would help me survive in the corporate world,” explains Gupta but as she adds, “Life at Jaipuria was not only about theories and studies. I made some wonderful friends; took part in the annual festival, Udaan 2014; coordinated with various committees; was an active member of the Placement Committee and was taught by extremely good and helpful faculty.”

Talking about her summer internship programme, the young lady says that she did it off campus from Dentsply India Pvt.Ltd., where she worked on a ‘live’ project: “A study of consumer perception and Business Opportunities for Ecommerce in Dentistry in India.” This, she says helped her build her confidence levels for the final placement process.

Today, as Business Analyst with Cognitio Analytics LLC, Gupta looks back at her interview experience with a hint of pride. “It was a good interview,” she recalls. “It went for 45 minutes. It was really exhaustive but I never lost my confidence and presence of mind which I think proved to be the turning point for me.”

And her advice to the current batch in preparing for interviews? “Build your confidence and get rid of your public speaking fear. Read the newspapers and various books to enhance your business knowledge and above all keep yourself updated,” she concludes.
