"Success comes to those who dare to dream," shares Ravi Giri , Jaipuria Indore, 2014-16

“Success comes to those who dare to dream”

Ravi Giri’s placement journey is the stuff that dreams are made of! From Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore (batch of 2014-16) to Midcom Group, Dubai. Giri was born in Ballia, a district in Uttar Pradesh and graduated from Ananda Mohan College, Kolkata with a B.Com degree. “I don’t belong to an educated family,” he says in all humility. “My father is a ‘cab’ driver but ever since I was in standard IX, the idea of doing an MBA and getting into a good career was something I dreamt of!”

Giri’s family had very limited resources but despite these tight financial conditions, he studied hard (attended night college) and also worked full time during his graduation just so he could get the money together to prepare for the CAT examination. Wanting nothing but the best Business School, Giri applied to Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore. “It was the right decision,” he reflects. “I wanted to get into an institute that imparted quality teaching from a good faculty; industrial exposure; a holistic education and excellent placement offers. I got all these things and much more,” he says.

This young man is grateful to Jaipuria, Indore for ensuring that not only have his confidence levels improved but so have his communication skills. “I was always a shy person. I was also not very good at public speaking, so when it came to my presentation skills – well, they were practically zero! Today my aptitude in public speaking has improved considerably and even though I still need to work on a few areas, I am more confident of my abilities.”

Giri who was the recipient of a scholarship from Jaipuria, Indore says that the Institute’s equal emphasis on extra-curricular activities did a lot to give him a well-rounded personality. Elaborating on his achievements outside the classroom, he says that apart from participating in inter-management college quiz and business plan competitions, some of which he won, he also won the title of Mr Fresher and bagged a prize for his poem in the Kavi Sammelan contest.

Harking back to his days at Jaipuria’s Indore campus, Giri recalls his summer internship with Emami Ltd in Kolkata where the subject of his dissertation was: ‘A Study of Foreign Exchange Risk Management with Special Reference to the Export Business.’ However, it was the road to an international placement that he remembers with both gratitude and sheer delight. “My interview with the Midcom Group, where I am currently employed, was an amazing experience. I was asked a number of questions from my domain areas as well as some general and common questions. There was a rapid fire round of questions as well where my alertness was gauged. I was inwardly nervous, of course, but outwardly confident – a fact noticed by my interviewer!”

And the turning point that clinched the deal? “I was more inclined towards Finance but I had also specialised in Marketing, and I prepared myself for any eventuality. Consequently, when I was asked about the economies of India as well as Africa – I was able to answer well. My interviewer also mentioned that he was impressed with my attitude and work ethics,” he says. Giri’s role in the organisation will comprise managing the distribution network, generating revenue, handling the different aspects of marketing as well as managing clients.

“I will really miss Jaipuria, Indore,” he says adding, “my friends became like family. The great environment, campus life, my mentors and the brilliant faculty are other memories I will cherish.” Giri’s advice to the students he leaves behind is to ensure that they find time to “exercise, do yoga or anything else you enjoy. It is important to take time off from the hectic schedule to focus on yourself. Concentrate on your speech during presentations and get feedback from your mentors and friends and last but not least read the newspapers!”

Wonderful advice from a young man who has lived his dream!

My B-school journey continues to be an enriching experience – Divyansha Kumar (2015-17), Jaipuria Lucknow

Having graduated in Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Lucknow-born Divyansha Kumar joined Accenture Pvt. Ltd, Bangalore as an Associate Software Engineer. Kumar, however, soon realised that her true potential lay in the development sector so she decided to hone her capabilities by doing a management degree from an institute with good credentials in that area.

Scanning the various Business Schools in and around Lucknow, Kumar zeroed in on the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow for a variety of reasons. “I had heard about the opportunities that Jaipuria Lucknow provided its students; about its excellent faculty and the programs it offered that were equivalent to any top B-school in India. I also discovered that the return on investment in terms of placements is among the best in India,” she says adding that her research left her with no doubt that this was the Business School for her.

Currently pursuing her PGDM, (batch of 2015-17), Kumar says that her experience at the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow has been enriching to say the least. “My first semester provided me with a plethora of opportunities. The faculty is one of the best I’ve come across and the various programs like Mentorship, and the Management Training Program among others have helped me groom my skills and personality,” she says. Kumar stresses that she is keen on exploring Finance and Operations along with Marketing. “Earlier if anyone told me to take up Finance I would have probably laughed but now I’m confident all because of the pedagogy, the faculty and the Institute,” she says.

Jaipuria, Lucknow has always been known for its friendly environment – a fact that all the graduates and students reinforce. Kumar is no different. “The Institute is very ‘student-friendly’ and the seniors are very helpful,” she says. In fact she goes on to add that the Director personally ensured that every student in Kumar’s team was given an equal platform to showcase his or her talent. “Dr M Ashraf Rizvi, our Director, also started monthly meetings with every learning team – a forum where students air their college-related problems. Queries relating to academics, pedagogy, curriculum, mess food and so on are discussed and appropriate action is taken immediately. This has created an open environment not only for the faculty but for the students as well and has enforced a proper constructive feedback system,” she adds.

The faculty at the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow says Kumar pays “individual attention to each student apart from which a new and helpful initiative has been taken where all the lectures are recorded and are available for students to view online in case they’ve missed something during the lectures.”

Professor (Dr.) Reena Agrawal is her mentor and favourite faculty – as Kumar puts it, “She is a combination of a guide, teacher and friend.” All these factors have helped Kumar to augment her learning experience. “I’ve come first in my section in the last two trimesters, I’ve learnt to lead and work in a team, as we are assigned teams for our projects and assignments during every trimester,” she elaborates. “I’ve imbibed the importance of coordination and effective communication. I’m not afraid to take initiatives anymore as I know that help is always at hand. I’ve also learnt to judge my potential and to say no when I know that I won’t be up to a task.”

However, it’s not ‘all work and no play’ at Jaipuria, Lucknow. Extra-curricular activities form a healthy part of life on campus and Kumar is Junior Coordinator of the Social Responsibility Committee. She won first prize in the Business Orientation Program and a prize in ‘Build from Scrap’ which tests a student’s cognitive skills. She’s also participated and won various prizes in activities conducted “throughout our curriculum like Nukkad Natak, Act and React.”

This Scorpio lady dreams of travelling in a world where no one is deprived of education. And working towards her dream of entering the academic world she says, “I’m part of an NGO-‘Project Khel’ which teaches life skills to the less privileged through experiential education. The strengths I’ve acquired at the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow, like confidence, communication, problem solving and leadership are sure to help me achieve my goal.”

Her mentor, Dr Reena Agrawal affirms what Kumar says about herself, “Divyansha has empathy for her friends, family, faculty and colleagues. She spends quality time in teaching the under privileged and has also been able to do well in academics. I have seen her grow in confidence and participate in different initiatives. She has thus been able to maintain a healthy work-life balance at Jaipuria.”

Apeksha Malviya (Batch 2015-17) credits Jaipuria Indore for helping her achieve her dreams

Having completed her graduation from the Sri Satya College for Women, Bhopal, Apeksha Malviya was looking for an institute which would help her to further her career prospects and Jaipuria Indore seemed the obvious choice. Not only was this rated as one of the best Business Schools in the region, but it also offered a campus life that is rich and varied – one which promotes learning at every level. “I consider myself lucky to be able to experience hostel life. The dormitory is my home and the campus vibrates with life and a host of extra-curricular activities, many of which I excel in,” she says.

Studying at the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore, however, is not all about academics – it’s much more. “Late night chatting sessions, sharing confidences with your friends – and of course studying!” says Malviya who admires all the faculty members at the Institute for their dedication and excellent teaching skills. However, she has a special word of praise for Dr Priti Bakhshi, Chair – Corporate Relations and Placements. “She has really helped me grow. Her patience and support in answering my queries – be they personal or professional – and her guidance has improved me as an individual,” she says.

Dr Priti Bakhshi in turn is happy with Malviya’s journey at the Jaipuria Indore campus and adds, “She is multi- talented and delivers her best in almost all areas whether it is in running a Campus Company “Bakers Best”, or participating in fashion shows, dance, dramas, writing MRC (Media Relationship Club) reports, doing live projects, event celebrations, Radio or Disc Jockeying or any academic activities.”

“Some of the most significant opportunities for growth take place outside the classroom – in the residence halls, through service projects, in clubs and other student programs and activities. And Jaipuria Indore provides all this and more. Every moment in Jaipuria Indore has been memorable and worth cherishing. It is so hard to choose the most memorable amongst them,” says Malviya adding that after a great deal of contemplation, it had to be her time at Pantaloons. “I interned with Pantaloons during Jaipuria Indore’s Winter Internship Program and their appreciation for my work meant a lot.” It gave me reason to celebrate my success and the confidence to fly high.”

Doing well at Jaipuria Indore requires students to be able to meet deadlines, to experience the practical as well as the theoretical. “The environment at the Jaipuria Indore is fast turning me into being a good manager, ready to face the corporate world. I have learnt the art of time management, communication, working under pressure while maintaining a work-life balance and staying calm and positive despite the odds,” says this young woman. The experience has also taught her to work amiably in teams – a quality that her batch-mate Parul Nayak says she vouches for. “Initially when I met Apeksha, I assumed she was someone with a haughty attitude but I was proved absolutely wrong once I started working with her. She is really a great support especially during difficult times and is someone you can rely on. Hard working, generous and understanding are adjectives that define her.”

Contributing to the holistic development of every student are all the extra-curricular activities that Jaipuria Indore provides. Malviya vouches for this when she says that her take-away will be the “fabulous campus life experience, the proactive qualities and the problem solving skills” that she has developed. Being content writer for the most prestigious club on campus – the Media Relationship Club has helped her as well. “Working as a campus journalist provided me with a platform to hone my writing skills while being the co-owner of “Bakers Best”- a campus company, along with my friend, Shaneel Patodi, – gave me a feel of what it’s like to be an entrepreneur. Through this we provide cakes, biscuits and namkeensin the college, whenever required.I also worked as a radio jockey in another campus company called “Saregama Jaipuria” where I was introduced to a whole new world,” she elaborates. She explains that this campus company is Jaipuria Indore’s radio platform, where a show happens every Sunday. All these experiences that helped her to develop her confidence levels have made Malviya the multifaceted personality she is today. A quality that Jaipuria Indore prides itself in imparting to its students.

Wanting to specialise in HR, this young lady sees herself as the future HR head of a corporate and with the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore’s help, she feels confident of achieving her dream.

“The Jaipuria, Indore experience honed my skill-sets and made me ready to take on any task with dedication and forward planning” – Ghanesh Kumar Shukla (Indore campus, batch 2013-15)

Raised in Shravasti, near Lucknow, Ghanesh Kumar Shukla (batch of 2013-15), is currently Area Sales in Charge at Tata Sky.  Shukla, who finds his job “very stimulating,” graduated from the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore, with HR and Marketing as his majors.

Looking back at his time in Jaipuria, Indore, Ghanesh says that it was an experience that honed his skill-sets and made him ready to take on any task with the dedication necessary of an industry-ready professional. “My day usually begins with a conference call to my teammates and to my reporting manager. We go into the market to meet the distributors in our territory, according to a Pre Journey Plan (PJP),’’ he says. With Trade Partners assigned to him, Shukla has to ensure that he has data on his fingertips and strategies in place. Thinking on his feet is another asset – one he learned from his time at Jaipuria, Indore.

Harking back to his days at Jaipuria’s Indore campus, Shukla is grateful to the faculty for the concepts he learned. In addition, the off-campus visits, that were very much part of the learning experience, also gave him exposure to the practical aspects of doing business. Today, this knowledge is helping him excel over his other peers. He explains: “In my case, for instance, I always analyse data before I visit the market. That way I always have the real picture in numbers and am able to give my trade partners logical answers. The process saves a lot of valuable time and makes the task at hand very easy!”

Careers present many challenges that have to be faced and overcome, says Shukla advising students to strive to be task-oriented. “We often waste time and effort in doing more than the task asks for. Hence strive to be focused and goal-oriented,” he says. And if one is in a marketing career, Shukla feels that discipline and time management are handy tools. “Fix your lunch timings so that you focus on your health as well,” he advises.

Handy suggestions from alumni who is putting all he learnt at Jaipuria into practice!

“Lifelong learning makes for an incessant learner,” says Professor (Dr) Shalini Verma, Associate Professor, Jaipuria Noida

Dr. Shalini Verma, Professor – Business Communication at Jaipuria Noida, explains the importance of the art of verbal and non-verbal communication and how she makes instruction interesting in the classroom.

A single child, born and brought up in Patna, Bihar, Dr. Shalini Verma lost her father when she was very young and was raised by her mother who was a school teacher. With a teacher as a mother, it is only natural that the art of communication and imparting of knowledge were important aspects of her home environment.

Graduating with English as her subject, Dr. Verma went on to do a PhD in English Literature, during which time she developed an interest in both the “verbal and non-verbal aspects of communication.” This, coupled with the psychological insights into the world of communication that she gained during that time, opened up whole new vistas for her. As she explains, “Studies have proven that non-verbal or the ‘how’ aspect of communication (body language and vocalic; i.e. how we use our voice to convey meaning) contributes to 93 percent, while the verbal or the ‘what’ aspect of communication contributes to just 7 percent.”

According Dr. Verma, this aspect of communication was taken more or less for granted in India; however, as she explains, “things are changing now and we Indians are becoming more articulate when it comes to expressing ourselves – both verbally and non-verbally.” She feels that “interpersonal skills, the ability to connect (or communication skills) and adaptability are three major soft skills that are essential for anyone who wants to be successful in college, as well as in the corporate world.”

Armed with these insights that form an essential part of a student’s repertoire during an interview, Dr. Verma explains that the body language cues she looks for, when she meets someone for the first time, are the “positive vibes that the person emits through his or her non-verbal cues – a pleasant disposition, upright posture, agile gait and friendly gestures.”

A core communications person, Dr. Verma’s first stint at Jaipuria Noida was during 2009-10 as Assistant Professor – Business Communication. She had, at the time, just completed a two-year teaching stint at Ohio University’s (U.S.) India MBA Program. She then went on to teach at T. A. Pai Management Institute and IIM Raipur. But her experience with Jaipuria Noida was so good that she rejoined as Associate Professor – Business Communication in January 2016.

Dr. Verma says that she finds the business communication curriculum at Jaipuria Noida far more comprehensive than at other Business Schools. This is largely due to the fact that it is “taught in all the three trimesters in the first year.” Having experimented with innovative teaching methods, as well as with traditional ones, she explains that her teaching methodology uses “a lot of simulations and experiential learning techniques – all geared towards creating a greater impact and a better learning experience for students.”

Thus, case studies, role plays, management games and other simulation tools form a vital part of her teaching technique. “Apart from this, students are given enough exposure to experiential learning where they are asked to do ‘live projects’ comprising both off-line and on-line, as well as off-camera and on-camera sessions,” she elucidates. So, for instance, if the theory of ‘Chromatics’ (the ‘communicative value of colours’ – one of the seven components of non-verbal communication) is taught, students take part in an important in-class activity. Dr. Verma explains: “students are asked to work in teams to create a hypothetical company, select its name (in tandem to its proposed area of operations) and develop its logo, and finally also ‘defend’ it in the form of a presentation before the class. This unleashes their creativity as well as their consensus building skills in a team situation – this is a must for success in corporate work life.”

The author of over 56 books, Dr. Verma feels that her book “Body Language: Your Success Mantra,” is the one that is “closest to my heart as it analyses the subject from an Indian perspective.” Bringing such a wealth of knowledge to the teaching experience, students at Jaipuria Noida find her classes full of “fun-wrapped-rigour” that groom them “to connect with their inner selves as well as with the outer world.”

Jaipuria Noida is opening up new vistas for current student, Aditya Singh (2015-17)

Coming from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, Aditya Singh completed a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from GLA University before he joined Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. Aditya was excited about this new endeavour, and he knew the institute would improve his career prospects and hone his latent talent.

Singh was aware of the standing of the institute before he chose Jaipuria Noida. The draw for him was the institute’s excellent faculty and its reputation for producing students who were not only industry-ready, but who were well-rounded human beings as well.

In the beginning, things got off to a difficult start for Aditya. The first semester was a challenge as his “presentation skills were weak”; in addition, he found it difficult to work with “unfamiliar faces”. However, things soon changed for Aditya: “It took me some time, after which I began to see the difference in my work: my presentation skills improved because of endless practice and my project work got much better.” He was also able to participate in group activities with a lot more freedom than he had been able to at first. For this, Singh says he has to thank the faculty. “The teachers are all very experienced, in addition to being very cooperative and supportive,” he says, adding that amongst his favourite teaching staff, Dr Abhijit Nair stands out. “Mainly because of his teaching style, the way he explains things and his ‘always-ready-to-help’ temperament.”

His time at Jaipuria, Noida opened up new vistas for Aditya. “I have certainly learnt a lot,” he says. “I am an active member of the Media Relations Club (MRC); I have overcome my stage fright (something that he never managed to do during his years as a graduate); I have learned how to make the right decisions; I have also learned a lot about Marketing and Business Development – apart from which, field work has helped me know the market.”

Aditya, who has chosen Marketing and HR as his majors, aspires to join a digital marketing company. His long-term dream, however, is to open an NGO and work for the betterment of the underprivileged. Aditya does not doubt his capability to achieve any of his goals. As he says, “I am hardworking, adaptable to any situation, and a team player with leadership qualities.” All of these are strengths that are bound to help him make a mark in a career of his choice. And for all these achievements, Aditya says he has Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida to thank. “It has been a life-changing experience for me.”

Professor Sonali Singh (Decision Science and Operations), corroborates this when she says, “Aditya puts in a sincere effort in everything he does and also has a helpful temperament. With these two qualities we have really seen him evolve over the last one year. Now he actively participates in different initiatives at the campus, which further help him gain in confidence and experience. “

A good natured Aquarian, Aditya has many friends at Jaipuria’s Noida campus. “We take part in a lot of activities together. We have even travelled to various new destinations together,” he says. His batch mate Rishab Singh adds, “Aditya is a good friend. He is not only fun-loving and adventurous, but he also has excellent skills in photography and is a superb mimic! We can always bank on him to take the best pictures. As part of the MRC he is always aware of different things happening in the campus.”

vAditya’s PGDM journey has certainly been made much more pleasurable because of his close circle of friends. As he says, “My father and my friends serve as great motivators for me in my march ahead into the future.”

Jaipuria Institutes make it to NIRF Ranking Stands at 26th and 49th Position in India

Jaipuria Noida and Jaipuria Lucknow have been ranked among the top-50 management institutes in India by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India in its National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). This is the first official ranking of management institutions by Government of India.

Jaipuria Noida was ranked 26 and Jaipuria Lucknow was ranked 49 at the all India level including all IIMs. Moreover, these institutes have been ranked 10 and 16 respectively at the North India level, thus reinforcing the positioning of Jaipuria Institutes as one of the best management institutes in the region. The ranking is available at https://www.nirfindia.org/mgmt

The NIRF has been approved by the MHRD and launched by Hon’ble Minister of HRD on 29th September, 2015. This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”. Further details of the ranking methodology for ‘Management Institutions’ is available at http://www.nirfindia.org/Docs/Ranking-Framework-for-Managment-Institutions.pdf

Commenting on the release of the rankings, Shreevats Jaipuria, Vice Chairman said “the ranking is a validation of Jaipuria’s legacy of excellence in education dating back to 1945. Today Jaipuria Institute of Management is one of the largest groups in northern and central India to offer AICTE approved PGDM programmes at four world class campuses in Lucknow, Noida, Jaipur and Indore. The ranking is also a testament of Jaipuria’s commitment to provide transformational education and the quality that it assures year after year. The rankings will also motivate us to continuously upgrade and upscale the quality and spread of our educational endeavor.”

The rankings are an additional feather in Jaipuria’s cap. Established in 1995 and 2004 respectively, Jaipuria Noida and Lucknow has, in a short span of time, achieved the distinction of being counted among India’s top business schools. They are NBA accredited for all their PGDM programs. Jaipuria Noida and Lucknow are also accredited as a ‘Grade A’ institute by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, better known as NAAC. The PGDM programs at Jaipuria Lucknow and Noida has also been granted MBA equivalence by the AIU (Association of Indian Universities).
