Government of Bhutan conducts 2nd MDP on Effective Construction Management for Senior Engineers and Chief Managers

Bangkok, 29 Oct 2015. In continuation with it’s drive toward a more robust infrastructure, Ministry of Bhutan concluded a 3-day Management Development Programme for it’s top executives of the department of Construction of Monasteries and Fort (administrative buildings). Held between the 26th and 28th of October in Bangkok, the Institute of Management Studies (IMS) Bhutan, roped in the prominent Indian management institute, Jaipuria Institute of Management, to deliver the MDP on Effective Construction Management. A total of 15 Senior Engineers and Chief Managers of the Ministry of Construction of Monasteries and Fort, Bhutan, participated in the MDP.

This is the 5th MDP that Jaipuria Institute of Management has conducted for the Ministry of Bhutan. Earlier this year, in March 2015, another MDP for Bhutan on Project Management was conducted in Mumbai. Based on the positive feedback from that MDP – both in terms of building a copious knowledge-base as well on-ground implementation value – the Government of Bhutan and IMS, Bhutan has continued its relationship with Jaipuria Institute of Management as an intellectual partner in conduct of training for government officials.

“Bhutan is a unique country,” said Dr. Nidhi Vashisht, coordinator of the MDP for Jaipuria Institute of Management. “The first MDP with Bhutan, held earlier this year, was in Mumbai. The purpose was to give a first-hand view of how mammoth projects are envisioned, undertaken, and delivered. Various models of project and finance management were studied and shown on ground. This time around the purpose of the MDP was more focussed. We studied various countries and hit upon Thailand as one that has similarities to the Bhutanese sensibilities and culture. The Senior Engineers and Chief Managers of the Ministry of Construction of Monasteries and Fort, Bhutan, were given perspective on how infrastructure in Bangkok was blending traditional monastery and temples with modern building techniques.”

To put things in perspective, Jaipuria Institute of Management brought in one of its empanelled experts, Mr.K.N Rai, Former Chief Executive (Civil Works & Estates) and Advisor (SP), Defence Research & Development Organization, Ministry of Defence. A veteran in traditional modernity and restoration work, Mr. Rai’s rich experience and expertise proved to be a key reason for the success of program. Broadly, the MDP covered topics like Construction logistics and Resource Management, Site Organization & Management, Construction Safety , Risk Management in Infrastructure Projects ,Construction Quality Management , Construction and Environment , Project Appraisal systems , Scope of Work and Project Delivery , Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanisms , Payments, Liens and Securitization etc.

“The government of Bhutan wanted to expose their key officials to the state-of-the-art development in Bangkok,” amplified Dr. Vashishth. “The program had site visits across Thailand, as a part of course coverage, so that participants could witness the architectural wonders. As the academic partner to Training programs sourced by IMS Bhutan specifically with regards to Government Training requirements, the mandate of the International MDP team of Jaipuria Institute of Management was very clear. We wanted that participants take back global trends to their country and fuel the development of Bhutan.”

Jaipuria alumnus Mr. Divya Mehra, VP, Service (IG), Controls & Audits, Religare stresses on the importance of practical learning for today’s managers

“My journey with Jaipuria Institute of Management has been great because of all the amazing things I have learned there. Both the theoretical and practical learning that I got from the institute has led me to the place in my career where I am today.” These are the words of Mr. Divya Mehra of the 2005 batch, and the place he is talking about is that of Vice-President, Customer Service (IG), Controls & Audits, Religare. We talked to him about his academic years, the role of the institute in his grooming as a professional and the challenges he faces in his work sphere.

As the VP of a top brand, Mr. Mehra is in a position of huge responsibility; this is a challenge in itself, but it’s something he thrives on. The Marketing and Finance major from the institute today handles controls, audits and inspections at Religare. Talking about his work tasks, he says, “One big challenge is stress because it’s everywhere. It could be because you have to interact with people that you might not gel with, or deal with deadlines. It’s not the stress but how you choose to deal with it that proves your mettle.”

Mr. Mehra is candid in his admission that it was his education at his B school that prepared him for the road ahead in his career. He re-iterates the fact that he has been able to implement whatever he learned at the institute in his professional life. This is something he feels has given him the opportunity to go far in life: “One big take away from my time at the institute was that whatever situation you are faced with, you cannot shy away from it. If you are willing to face it head on, there’s every chance that you will be able to sail through it,” he says practically.

Of course, Mr. Mehra’s experience and overall personality was also moulded by cultural activities that his institute promoted. He talks about the importance of such initiatives, saying, “Besides the curriculum and classroom learning, I benefited from being a part of the cultural activities. I was the culture secretary and started a cultural committee that hosted several events; I also was able to meet new people from various colleges. It has given me so many beautiful memories, in addition to an experience of a lifetime.”

After going through the B School and management degree route himself, does Mr. Mehra think it’s a requisite for those who want to make it in the corporate world? He has seen the industry closely today and is that something employers look from new candidates? “While it’s not a necessity it can certainly take you to the next level,” he says. “I count myself lucky to have done my PGDM from a renowned institute that created an ideal launch pad for me.”

Ask Mr. Mehra for his advice to today’s PGDM students and he says, “Don’t think of your program as a source for theoretical learning. Focus on the practical learning too because you will be able to implement it in your professional life. And that will make a world of difference to your future.” He believes that it certainly has had a huge impact on his career, one that has taken off on the back of his own learning at the institute.

Ms. Martinez then took to the dais and said in her inspiring speech, “People are the most important assets for an organization. It is very difficult to predict the behavior of client, product, competition and market. Only people can connect, innovate, look ahead and see competition.” Mr. Misra dug deep into his own experiences and shared, “Achievers never expose themselves; their achievements introduce others to their great work. Performance is old fashioned, doing something achievable before you die is the new focus.”

An important element of the conclave was the two panel discussions that were held to shed light on crucial subthemes in the field. The first panel discussion “HR Practices in the VUCA World” brought together preeminent speakers, including Mr. Sunil Omanwar, Head – Learning & Organization Development, Fortis Healthcare; Mr. Rajiv Kakkar, GM – HRD, JK Organization, Mr. Danish Saleem, AVP – Resourcing, Barclays; and Dr. Ajay Kumar Jain, Associate Prof, HR & OB, Management Development Institute (MDI). The engaging discussion began with Dr. Kakkar suggesting that VUCA is a concept that has been around for hundreds of years. According to him, farming and defense are two areas where VUCA has been prevalent for a long time where VUCA stands for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous.

Mr. Saleem added, “VUCA is all about adaptability. There should be strategic HR during the time of crisis because a crisis can decrease employee morale and motivation.” Dr. Jain was of the opinion that human behavior is shaped by our environment, situations, cultures, salary and expectations – and the struggle is to deal with internal VUCA. Mr. Omanwar described VUCA as Vision, Understanding, Clarity and Agility, and explained why the ability to face challenges is what leadership is all about. He left the audience with a message: “Stay competitive, commercialized and talk business with a problem-solving approach. Define and redefine the job and role of HR.” It was an important lesson for students in the gathering.

They led an invigorating session with Mr. Hussain starting things off by saying that managing Gen Y has been a true challenge for all organizations. “There is no particular approach for handling Gen Y, so one should look at the key indicators for coping with it. Organizations that can handle Gen Y effectively are going to be successful,” was his simple advice.Ms. Khan described Gen Y as restless, impulsive and impatient, which is why it should be given the instant feedback that it needs. Mr. Saxena, on the other hand, quoted, “Gen Y knows how to manage emotionally, as compared to previous generations. Timely Recognition, Respect, and Rewards in terms of career direction are its hallmarks.” Finally, Mr. Joshi left the audience thinking by coining the term “Self-management for Gen Y.” He believes Gen Y is focused on learning and gaining experience and the key lies in empowering it and letting it harness its true potential. Thus, the conclave brought to the fore several novel ideas that got the audience pondering and left them with important takeaways for the future.

Jaipuria Lucknow students share their experiences after visiting the automotive plant of TATA Motors

On the 11th of Sept., Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow organized an industrial visit to Tata Motors for its students in the Operations Management elective. The visit to the plant of the country’s largest automobile company offered a practical learning experience – from the different aspects of operations on a large scale industrial plant to time management and waste reduction, the elective’s twenty-five students gained a lot from this opportunity.

The trip, held under the guidance of Prof. Vinod Kumar Chib, offered students an opportunity to interact with the professionals from Tata Motors. Mr. Prashant Pandey was one of them and he started things off with a presentation on the history of the company. To hear about its achievements was an eye opening experience, as Srajan Gupta recounted later: “The Lucknow assembly plant manufactures Trucks and Bus Chassis. It has an output of 25 buses per day, and everything that goes on here is quite impressive.”

The industrial visit kept the students in the thick of the action as they observed several crucial processes involved in manufacturing. Observing the assembly line with 30 stations used in building the chassis of a heavy commercial vehicle was one of the major highlights of the visit. Besides manufacturing, the students also gained insight into several management concepts and strategies that are applied in a plant for better efficiency. It instantly helped students relate their classroom learning to practical functions.

As one of the students pointed out, “We learned how they reduce the direct material cost to become a cost leader in the market through weight reduction, commonization, elimination of some un-useful parts, and using alternative light material. They also have a value proposition of SQDCME: safety, quality, delivery, cost, morale, environment.” Through the industry visit and their interaction with professionals, students also had a firsthand experience of inventory management, safety measures, and other functions that are integral elements of plant operations.

Sagarika Bharadwaj reflected on her learning from the visit, saying, “The working for such mega plant requires high level of coordination so as to minimize wastage of time and money. Importance of supervision or quality checks in case of heavy production is also crucial.” Students from the institute also got to learn about KANBAN, which is a visual signal that is used to trigger an action. Not only did they understand its importance, but they also figured out its rules, which made for some interesting observations.

The highly engaging industry visit ended with an interactive session where students could ask all the questions they had in mind. Professionals from the company were at hand to answer their queries and clear their doubts. Thus, the visit served up a crucial practical learning experience to students, who went back home enriched. Abhishek Chaturvedi summed up the experience when he said, “Tata Motors makes every step in the process count; work should not stop because in a factory there is no lead time. These lessons were crucial for us and we will remember them for long.” And that would be mission accomplished for the visit.

Dr. N. K. Dhooper, Founder Director, Jaipuria Lucknow, offers heartfelt advice to students on the occasion of the Institute’s 20th Foundation Day

The 20th Foundation Day celebrations of Jaipuria Institute of Management turned out to be an extravaganza on the Lucknow campus, with a ‘who’s who’ from industry and academia attending the festivities. Amongst them was the much beloved Dr. N. K. Dhooper, Founder Director, Jaipuria, Lucknow. It was definitely a proud moment for him to see the institute come a long way and become a bastion of high quality management education in India. At the celebration, he offered thoughtful words of advice and encouragement to the students in the gathering.

According to Dr. Dhooper, today’s students can do well by following the example set by seniors in various academic and extracurricular activities. He also urged them to build their careers on a solid foundation by offering an example from the Mahabharata: “The answer given by Yudhishtra to Yaksha to his question, ‘What is the path?’ was ‘Path is that on which great people have gone’. Therefore, you have to go the way of your seniors who have been successful in their career thus far.”

Dr. Dhooper also urged the students to look at how their seniors conducted themselves in their academic years at the institute. He believed that the knowledge of the environment they had studied in and the challenges they faced and surmounted could offer them much guidance. “You have the glorious example of Mr. Anand Narain Kapoor – co-founder, Midcom Group, which employs 2500 people – in front of you. He has not only made a place for himself, but has created jobs for others, as well.” Mr. Ravinder Dubey,” he continued “is another example.”

He reflected on his conversation with Mr. Kapoor, who reminded Mr. Dhooper that when he approached him with problems, he was asked to come up with solutions, too. Mr. Kapoor recounts it as one of the most important aspects of the learning process. “That’s why I would ask you to not get bogged down by various problems you might face because they actually make us stronger,” he said, encouraging the students to achieve greater heights of success. “You have the responsibility not only to make your career, but that of others, too. If you aim for that, then the sky is the limit for you.”

Mr. Dhooper was touched by the honor of being recognized on the 20th Foundation Day. And, he graciously shared his gratitude with everyone who was involved in creating this Centre of Excellence. He believes that it was their dedication that grew the Jaipuria brand and resulted in the development of other centres across the country. “The campuses have emerged so well and the faculty members are highly rated. It would be great if makes it to the top 5 B Schools in the country by the Silver Jubilee year. Of course, the other campuses would follow the Mother institution in a short span and that would be a fantastic achievement,” he said, filled with pride and a lot of emotion.
