Jaipuria Jaipur hosts the Fourth National Sports Meet with more than a 1000 participants from 54 institutes from different parts of the country.

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur recently hosted its Fourth National Sports Meet. The event drew more than 1000 students from all over the country, who showed off their skills in a wide range of activities. The two day event held on the 11th and 12th of September brought together representatives from 54 institutes in 15 cities and 8 states, making it a truly National event. The significance of the event can truly be estimated from the fact that it had renowned Indian archer and Padmashree award winner Mr. Limba Ram as the Chief Guest.

“Be A Sport” was the theme of the meet, which began in the presence of the Archery legend and other dignitaries. Over the next two days, students from Pune and Delhi NCR, Indore and Anand, Noida, Lucknow, Barelly, Udaipur and many other cities participated in 18 events, including Volleyball, Carom, Kho Kho, Cricket and Tennis. Mr. Limba Ram declared the meet open with the message, “Winning is not everything, your sportsman spirit counts. Believe in yourself and let sports build relations amongst you all.”

That, in fact, has been one of the important purposes of the meet: to let students interact, share and grow with their contemporaries while they learn important lessons. But, of course, winning was on the minds of all present, even as they were planning to have a good time and soak in the lively atmosphere on the campus. As a team member from the University of Rajasthan said, “The campus is great and the feeling all around is positive. We really feel welcome here and look forward to winning a few medals at the event.”

Things definitely got competitive on the sporting field as the participants gave their best to win bragging rights for their teams. The girls’ teams made the hosts proud by winning the Chess, Carom and Tug Of War competitions. While teams like Jaipuria, Noida that were returning to the meet wanted to do better than their performance the previous year, others like NDIM, New Delhi looked at the bigger picture. “The volleyball match was fun but overall it’s a new experience for us and we expect to learn new things about management too,” said a team member.

The two-day event concluded with the Valedictory Function that had Arjuna and Maharana Pratap award winner and India Kabbadi player, Shri Navneet Gautam as the Guest of Honour. Shri R Bhanawat, Ex-MD, RIICO, Jaipur was the Chief Guest for the function and he gave away the prizes to the deserving teams. Dr. Prabhat Pankaj, Director, Jaipuria, Jaipur thanked all participants for their enthusiasm and said, “Sport is a coming together of soft skills and hard skills. Sportsmanship is the quality to be imbibed for success in life.”

The Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour also shared their experiences with the participants and encouraged them to excel further. Mr. Bhanawat suggested, “A good sportsperson has to inculcate the 5Ss: Stamina, Strength, Speed, Skill and, most importantly, Spirit.” This was the advice that was taken to heart by all participants who were already looking forward to the meet next year. The team from R. A. Poddar, Jaipur voiced everyone’s thoughts, saying, “We will come back with a bigger team next year and participate in all of the games.”

Ms. Grace Arun reveals the secrets of a successful sales career during her talk on Distribution in the Telecom Industry at Jaipuria, Lucknow

Students of Jaipuria, Lucknow recently had the privilege of listening to Ms. Grace Arun, Zonal Head, of Vodafone (Distribution). Ms. Arun, who has over two decades of experience in the world of sales, delivered a talk on “Distribution in the Telecom Industry” on the 12th of September. She has climbed the ladder of success in the corporate world throughout her career, which includes stints with big names like Times Group and Bharti Airtel Services. Thus, there was a lot to learn from her experiences and achievements, especially for students interested in sales careers.
It was a highly interactive session and Ms. Arun set the tone for it right at the onset by asking the students how the sales domain was different from marketing. As the audience presented its views, she naturally, and effectively, highlighted the main differences between each field. She then shared anecdotes from her own prolific career to emphasize the competencies and skills required for professionals: according to her, B2B (Direct), B2C (Retail), and Distribution (Channel Management) are the three main streams of sales.
Ms. Arun covered different areas of sales in her talk, right from misconceptions about sales to what it takes to have satisfied customers. She then went on to shed light on the qualities one should possess to thrive in a sales job, which she believes is a great first job for a recent graduate. “High levels of intelligence, empathy towards customers, listening and communication skills, and the ability to learn are some of the prerequisites for a solid career in sales,” she explained, giving the students some encouragement as they continue their education. “You also need to have respect for your profession and whatever you do.”
Ms. Arun’s journey as a sales professional is also interesting because she made it into what was definitely a male-dominated industry just two decades ago. There were challenges along the way, and the way she surmounted them can be an inspiration to students. “When I first got into sales, I didn’t think it was my cup of tea; but, I somehow convinced myself to carry on and that was the turning point in my life,” she explains. “People wonder whether a woman can handle the rigors of sales or whether she has it easy because of her gender, but you should just let your performance speak for itself.” This last comment was met with a round of applause from the gathering.
According to Ms. Arun, the power of convincing her customers gives her a deep sense of fulfillment. But, she was also excited about talking to students, as they were buzzing with energy and filled with hope for the future. She offered them thoughtful advice, seen in her concluding remarks: “We have the asset of manpower, how you take it to the next level depends on the youth in the country. If each one of you has the right ideology and thought process, life in this country will suddenly turn out to be very different. Do whatever you want to do with tenacity and be truthful to yourself in everything you do.” Thoughtful and important words form an accomplished individual – Ms. Arun’s talk surely energized and inspired the students in attendance.

Alum Dr. Deepali Kacker is thrilled to come back to Jaipuria, Lucknow to share her experience and see how it has grown in stature over the years.

It was a homecoming of sorts for Dr. Deepali Kacker, Jaipuria, Lucknow alum as she came back to the campus to deliver a talk on “Emotional Intelligence and its Implications at Workplace”. A student of the 97 Batch, Dr. Kacker has gone on to become a much sought after management consultant. Having worked with several big names in the corporate world, she has gathered huge experience in the field. She was more than willing to share it with the students of her institute who had plenty of take homes from the session.

In an interview with the campus journalists Dr. Kacker talks about her experience of coming back to the institute, which played a major role in molding her as a professional.

How was the experience of addressing students from the institute you studied in?

It is always a different experience when I come back to Jaipuria, Lucknow. Since I have been working in the corporate world and as a visiting faculty for the last few years, when I got this opportunity I grabbed it with both hands. I feel a sense of achievement to come back as a teacher to the institute where I once was a student.

What are your memories from the days you studied here?

When we did our PGDM here there wasn’t a lot of infrastructure as things were just coming up. But I remember there was a small canteen where you would get samosas and tea. It was a good place to hang out with friends and a source of many memories. I also remember the industrial visit to Maruti factory in Delhi as a huge learning experience.

What has been your institute’s role in helping you achieve your corporate dreams?

We may have joined the program at Jaipuria, Lucknow with some kind of knowledge but it was the institute that connected it with practical experience and exposure. It taught us presentation skills and offered us insight into how organizations work. We were then taught to implement the skills we had learned through summer training and projects. It transformed our knowledge to suit industry requirements.

Being an accomplished woman corporate professional did you face challenges like keeping a balance between your work and personal life?

Yes, home support is important but it’s more about planning things. As women we need to balance many things. I have to prepare for lectures, and I don’t like to keep things for the last minute because our schedule is dependent on several people. We are handing dual responsibilities and have to be impeccable with planning.

Jaipuria will complete 20 years on September 8. What are the changes you see in the institute over the years?

It has seen many positive changes and come a long way. Since I go to many colleges I can proudly say that my institute has consistently maintained superior quality of education. Every time I come back here I see something new on the campus. The learning offered by the institute goes a long way in students’ lives. You can see that in the careers of its alum, who have scaled new heights of success.

As a successful alum yourself who has been there done that, what is your advice for present day students?

most important thing is to assess yourself before deciding on your career. Of course there are several jobs that are out there but you need to choose one that suits your personality.

FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Lucknow

Dr. Kumar from Bond University, Australia conducts a workshop on Business Statistics and Big Data careers for Jaipuria, Lucknow students

At Jaipuria, we regularly get to interact with academic and business leaders from across the world. This gives students an international perspective to theirlearning and exposure to the ever-changing global business climate. On August 28th we got one such opportunity. Dr. Kuldeep Kumar, Professor in Economics and Statistics at Bond University, visited the Jaipuria Institute of Management’s Lucknow campus to conduct a workshop in his area of expertise – Business Statistics and Big Data.

As to why he chose statistics for a career, Dr. Kumar said it was the business application part of statistics that always excited him. So, he channels his knowledge and efforts towards business applications, such as data analysis and inter-disciplinary research variables study, to name a few. Before joining Bond University in 1993, Dr. Kumar taught at IIM and the National University of Singapore.

Dr. Kumar began by discussing how business statistics and big data are among the top professions in the world. To elaborate on how business statistics can help detect internal frauds, he used the example of Satyam.

He went on to discuss fraud, corruption, and bribery in India and how these can be eradicated. Later, Dr. Kumar took the time to speak to some students individually. While explaining complex concepts of the Golden Ratio, Fibonacci series, and Benford’s law, he also discussed how misleading advertisements are created by using simple applications of statistics.

Continuing from his discussion on internal fraud, Dr. Kumar said statistical models that incorporate big data analysis should be developed to help predict bankruptcy or fraud. Such information can then be forwarded to the Ministry of Finance, RBI, and relevant tax departments so that the necessary steps can be taken.

When teaching statistics to a class that also includes science, arts, and commerce graduates, Dr. Kumar said the best approach is to begin from the basics of mean, median and mode. Recalling the teaching method in Australia, he said that they use the “triple enforcement teaching technique”, wherein they first conduct lectures that are followed by lab sessions, before sending students out to collect data from their selected areas of interest.

Dr. Kumar wishes to see more students taking an interest in Big data and data analytics, as he predicts there will be a huge demand for professions in these fields in the near future. And, talking about his experience at Jaipuria, Dr. Kumar said he always enjoys interacting with students – especially when they’re attentive like the ones at Jaipuria. The session was informative in that helped build on the concepts students have been studying in class.

I think more information needs to be given on these four topics/sentences. With only one sentence for each, it seems incomplete.
