Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow welcomes Mr. Mohit Kumar, VP-HR, Idea Cellular to address on the importance of corporate communication

Jaipuria Institute of Management knows the importance of crossing the threshold between the academic world and the business world. Jaipuria fosters the belief that its students’ vision must be expanded beyond the cloistered setting of a classroom and should be immersed in the real-world issues which they will encounter when they move into their chosen professions.

This combination of academic instruction and business interface is what sets Jaipuria Institute of Management distinctly apart from other B-schools. It is something the institute prides itself on. This was on full display December 4, 2013 when Jaipuria Lucknow hosted an interactive session with Mr. Mohit Kumar, Vice President of Human Resources at Idea Cellular (U.P. EAST).

Speaking on the importance of effective communication in the business world, Mr. Kumar began his session by talking about the various forms of communication, including of non-verbal communication and its importance in helping to add value to effective interactions. He also talked about how body language and gestures also aid in building an effective communication foundation. Mr. Kumar’s emphasis on non-verbal communication keys and strategies helped the attendees to realise the importance of not only what they were saying, but also what they were doing.

Although Mr. Kumar spent the majority of his talk focusing on his topic of communication in the business world, he also imparted personal lessons from his own life as the vice-president of a leading telecom unit of India. This included the fact that he spends one day a week focused on his hobbies; he gave the students other such nuggets of advice for living a fulfilling life. In closing, Mr. Kumar offered this bit of sound guidance: “The first step to communicating effectively is to take a deep breath.”

Mr. Kumar’s session was unanimously praised by those who attended. As Anvesh, a first-year student, stated, “I now understand the expectations of the corporate world in the field of communication. Working on it as a skill will now become easier.” This was a sentiment echoed by Harshal, also a first-year student: “I never knew that non-verbal communication could play such an integral role in effective communication. After this session, I feel that being my normal self can contribute to me being an effective communicator.”

As the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow continues to strive to bring the best information available to its students within its classrooms, guest speakers like Mr. Kumar provide students with a glimpse of what the business world is really like beyond the confines of the institute. This beneficial marriage of both theory and experience will allow students to have a fully developed education that will enable them to succeed in the global marketplace.

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur students get a first hand view of business from the latest industry visit to Clay Craft India

On November 28, 2013, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur organized an industrial visit to Clay Craft India for the students. Recognising the importance of connecting the academic world with the business marketplace, Jaipuria Jaipur enabled 14 of its students to experience first-hand, the inner workings of Clay Craft India, as a means to extend their educational journey from the classroom to the real-world.

Clay Craft India is a crockery manufacturer that offers ceramic and bone china crockery to a wide variety of customers, both individual and commercial. Established in 1994, Clay Craft India has built a local and international reputation for its product quality and customer satisfaction. As such, Clay Craft India served as a perfect example of the type of company that students from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur could learn from.

Clay Craft India did not disappoint.

The enthusiastic group of students was treated to all that Clay Craft India had to offer. The guided tour included a walk-through of the entire process of making ceramic and bone china crockery, including the 20-line process that something as simple as a cup goes through from inception to completion. As Priyamvada Shanker (PGDM 2013-2015) stated, “Industrial visits are an integral part of education, and it is this experience that helps us gain first-hand information regarding the functioning of various industries. It was so exciting to understand and see the making of crockery. A cup from which we take a sip every morning goes through a 20-line process. This was amazing to me. I mean, I could never have imagined that so many processes are involved in the production of a plate or cup.”

The Chinese spray The bone mashing process

Dr. Sheenu and Dr. Pandey accompanied the students on their visit to Clay Craft India. Both echoed the sentiments of Priyamvada. As Dr. Pandey said, “Such a visit is a great motivator for students. It helps them to take full advantage of all the learning opportunities presented. It brings a different dimension to the students’ learning, things that they cannot learn in a classroom. It helps to bridge the gap between academia and industry.”

Given the overall success of the visit to Clay Craft India, it is something that will not soon be forgotten by those who attended. As Padmaja Sharma, a first-year PGDM student notes, “It was certainly a great experience and interesting to see the theories we study in our management books being put to practical use.”

Jaipuria Jaipur Placement Update

From Azamgarh to Jaipur and now to a bigger city, Jaipuria’s Vishal Singh is poised for success

Moving from a small town to a large city can be a challenge for anyone. The culture shock alone can be a daunting obstacle to overcome, but it is something that Vishal Singh took in stride. Hailing from the town of Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Vishal spent his youth there. After completing his schooling, Vishal travelled to Allahabad for further studies, eventually graduating with a BBA in Marketing and Human Resources.

With a BBA under his belt, Vishal decided that he still needed an edge to make him standout amongsthis peers. For this reason, he decided to go in for further education at Jaipuria Institute of Management. As Vishal explains the reasoning behind this decision, “Jaipuria is one of the top B-schools in India, and it has four campuses.” With his decision made, Vishal began his educational endeavours at Jaipuria.

Although he had grown up in a smaller town, Vishal embraced his new life in Jaipur city. He says, “I got many chances to participate in the many conferences across the four campuses, in events that were related to HR, Finance, Marketing, and IT. Participation in these events helped me to improve my personality and confidence. Jaipuria has a great infrastructure and excellent faculty members spread across the four campuses. These are all things that helped me to improve my overall personality.”

It is this shift in personality that Vishal credits the Jaipuria Institute of Management with most. “When I tried for admission into the Jaipuria Institute of Management, I didn’t have a lot of confidence to face an audience. Jaipuria gave me the platform to groom my personality. I have performed in singing competitions, participated in sporting events, and even participated in a “virtual trading game” that was organised by ICICI bank. I was able to win first prize and qualified for the national level.”

All of Vishal’s hard work and perseverance paid off at Jaipuria when he was offered a position with HINDWARE as a management trainee in Sales. As Vishal states, “Everyone wants to work with a good brand name, and HINDWARE has a very good image within the marketplace. It offers a good chance to grow because the Indian real-estate industry is booming. Because of this, HINDWARE represents a great opportunity for continued growth within the company.” In hindsight, Vishal believes that several factors contributed to him landing the role, factors such as good communication, confidence, humbleness, rural customer knowledge, and adaptability. All of these skills were things that he learned while at the Jaipuria Institute of Management.

In looking back at his educational career, Vishal has the following advice for those juniors who wish to follow in his footsteps: “I suggest that every student take part in each activity in college, and try to participate in as many conferences as they can.”
Given the success that Vishal has achieved, growing from a small town boy into an urban businessman, this is sage advice for those who want to fulfill their aspirations.

These professionals represented both government and private industries. Taking a generalist approach to the material, these individuals then offered their far-ranging expertise to those who attended the workshop. With the goal of helping the attendees to understand this IBM procured analytics software- SPSS, the lecturers adopted a case-study approach.

Ms. Sharda Singh, with the NGO Sparc India, had things to share while describing the workshop: “The biggest take-away from the workshop was the total package and content, from start to end. All the themes covered were important for step-by-step learning. The participation of all the candidates from different fields made this workshop unique. It was a good combination of academicians from various practices and development sector professionals.”

Dr. Preeti Mishra, from the Department of Management, BBD University, added: “The workshop was excellent. The lectures were well-delivered and interesting. It is difficult to summarise in words what the workshop meant. It gave valuable inputs to all of us as participants on the working and usage of SPSS.”

Growing up in the industrial town of Jamshedpur, Jagpreet Singh Hanspal dreamt of the big wide world beyond its horizons. In his own words, he wanted to have new experiences at every step of his journey in life. And now this PGDM student of Batch 2014 of Jaipuria Institute of Management has taken a huge step forward in his professional career. He has bagged a placement with Deloitte and will be drawing a handsome package of 4.5 lakh INR.

It is not just the placement and remuneration that has got Jagpreet excited. He is also thrilled with the fact that he has been offered the position of Tax Consultant, which is right up his street. “I have always had a keen interest in finance. I have studied Tax, especially Corporate Tax, during my graduation. Hence I am looking forward to giving this job my best shot. There will be challenges along the way, but I believe they will bring out the best in me,” says Jagpreet confidently.

He admits that his confidence stems from his learning at Jaipuria, as it has shaped his personality and attitude. According to Jagpreet, there were a few qualities that shone through during the crucial placement interview and he attributes them to his academic experience at the institute. “Leadership skills, communication skills, concept clarity, team player abilities and adaptability were some of the qualities they were looking for. And I think I possess them all, because as a Jaipurian you cannot escape imbibing those skills,” he elaborates.

Jagpreet recounts activities like quizzes, practical assignments, rigorous case studies, daily corporate interfaces and regular presentations that boosted his academic and overall learning experience as a management student. Not only did they help him understand the concepts of management well, they also taught him the importance of time management. Clearly, he hit the bulls-eye when he had sat to deliberate on the college to do his PGDM from.

Explaining his reasons for making this all-important decision that has brought him to the place where he is today, Jagpreet says, “It’s an AICTE approved institute situated in the industrial hub of Noida. I knew it would mean that the best companies would come to campus for placements. That made it an easy decision for me to make.” Clearly, his reasoning was spot on, given that even as a fresher, he has now bagged a placement with a company like Deloitte.

Jagpreet understands the importance of a professional course like his PGDM to gain a competitive edge in today’s job market. “It arms you with the knowledge and attitude to take on the competitive world out there. You learn to deal with and overcome real world problems through practical learning. Importantly, you realise your strengths and understand your weaknesses,” he says. With refreshing candour, Jagpreet admits that one might not know all the answers in an interview, but it’s important to accept that with honesty. That is his advice to fellow students as well, as he says, “You are not expected to know everything. But you are expected to be yourself. Don’t pretend to be someone you are not in the interview as you will get found out. Be yourself and be confident; it will take you a long way.” The mantra certainly seems to be working for Jagpreet.

Geetika Goyal, the small-town girl from Moradabad, on the threshold of big success at Zomato

Geetika Goyal’s is the story of a small-town girl with dreams of big cities. Born in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, Geetika had the opportunity to spend 12 years in a hostel in Dehradun till she finished tenth standard. Thereafter, on the basis of sheer hard work and academic excellence, Geetika finished her engineering and joined Wipro. “I got placed in-campus in Wipro after finishing my engineering, and I worked there for a period of one year in the Hyderabad campus. But my working at a multinational company made me realise how important a management degree is in the work space.” So was the shift from professional life to academics once again and this time at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida.

She explored and got call letters from several management institutes. However, she chose Jaipuria Institute of Management owing to its excellent faculty, impressive infrastructure and campus, and student feedback she gathered from the alumni. “I chose Jaipuria over other colleges, because of the culture of education here, among other things”.

An excellent student, who maintained a CGPA of 3.51/4 throughout her four semesters, Geetika was offered a placement with Zomato on the campus itself. She is joining them as Marketing and Sales Manager and is absolutely thrilled about it. “This job requires me to take up challenges on an everyday basis. It demands that I meet new people, talk to them, negotiate with them, and manage customer relationships. It will be fun while working because it fulfills my biggest hobby of meeting new people and building long-term relationships.”

In the current highly competitive environment, Geetika believes that a degree in management not only imparts learning, it also creates confidence in the employer’s mind during the process of recruitment. “A Masters degree in Management helps a company decide that you can run some part of their business with the course structure that you have learnt during your course. And the kick-start that you get in a job at the beginning lets you climb the ladder of success later, because the beginning is the first step of every person’s career. Once you start well, you are bound to create a bright future.”

Geetika attributes her success to a lot of people and factors, including her institute and faculty. “Several things worked in my favour — my ability to communicate well, international exposure during the Switzerland Exchange Programme, leadership skills that I displayed by winning various debate competitions, consistent hard work I put in to score 3.51/4.00 percentile in PGDM and, of course, my luck!” She has set her sights on becoming an entrepreneur, but she plans to work for some good organisations and gain some experience before setting off on her own.

Mr. P Chandrasekhr,Talks about How" The GCC Nations are different and no single strategy in one country will work easily in another"

Globalization today is a reality, and no longer a mere buzzword restricted to text-books and exquisitely penned articles on cross culture management. For managers of tomorrow, there is a need to understand the realities of working in a culture other than one’s own. Because all nations are becoming more globally interdependent, it is imperative that students understand the complexities of living and working in a foreign culture, beyond the very basic of etiquettes and language. In a tête-à-tête with the Jaipuria Group, Mr. P Chandrasekhr, Group General Manager of Jawad Sultan Group of Companies, Oman gets talking about the Middle Eastern region, understanding this cultural difference and also what the region expects from MBAs and also those who wish to make their careers in this surging region. Here are a few excerpts:
Jaipuria Institute(JI): Could you throw some light on Industry Expectations from MBA graduates, particularly with regards to the Middle East?

Mr. P Chandrasekhr:

Unlike a formal process of selection and induction that is carried out in large organizations in India and other large economies spread over different geographies, the situation in Middle East is vastly different.
Middle East today is the engine of Economic growth amidst the backdrop of poorly performing economies in different parts of the world. Hence, the talent pool worldwide greatly attracted to work here given the immense potential both in terms of compensation and an enviable life style.

JI: Many young professionals want to live and work in the Middle East, but might not be exposed to ground realities of the region. What is the real situation in Gulf Cooperation Council Countries [GCC]?

Mr. P C: Given the uniqueness of the economic structure in most of the GCC countries, its growth is greatly fuelled by government and consumer spending. Most GCC nations have significant hydrocarbon revenues [except Oman] and the same is directed towards infrastructure and social development. Hence, every sphere of economic activity is either selling of products or solutions or services. This is reminiscent of a developed economy where the services sector plays a dominant role. Hence, talented people with appropriate skill sets and experience are always in demand. MBA’s and similar professionals should therefore have such of those attributes [with aforesaid expertise] that will eventually help them in market place. The competition is intense and severe given the fact that the talent pool is drawn worldwide and also in most GCC nations, there is a socio economic obligation of education, training and deployment of nationals in economic activity.

JI: Interesting; so if an MBA today wants to plan his career in the Middle East say 3-4 years down the line on back of his work experience now, what would employers in the Middle East really look for?

Mr. PC: Amidst this background, most candidates have their roles and expectations cut out from day one. Suffice to say… they have to take the “ball and run from day 1”. The GCC nations are different and no single strategy in one country will work easily in another. The employers cutting across different operating spectrum [including our group] primarily look for following attributes in a candidate i.e. pronounced multicultural fit, significant domain or similar exposure in a competitive geography either in their home country or elsewhere. Language skills preferably with Arabic proficiency, Strong IT exposure, Ability to work hard and show adaptability against all odds, Driving License [an all-important attribute] due to near absence of mass transportation in almost all the gulf countries except Dubai, which has a well-developed and evolving multi modal transport. The last one’s importance cannot be underscored enough.

JI: So what should a candidates’ success mantra be?

Mr. PC: Given the consumerist environment which is widely prevalent in the Gulf countries and its growth further fuelled through mass media education, internet and other forms of communication, catching the eye ball attention of the elusive customer becomes paramount and it is indeed a challenging. There is no single success mantra to succeed in your career in the Middle East but, if the candidates can show that they have more than what is expected from them then, it is easy walk for them to realize their dream.

JI: Any special tips from your side for the management aspirants?

Mr. PC: I always believe that every job, similar to any venture is a constant journey of evolvement on a daily basis. The only way an individual can make a difference is to “think outside the box” and see how the organizations goal can be maximized while furthering one’s own objective.
