Mentoring Week turns out to be a huge success among students of Jaipuria Indore

Jaipuria Institute of Management – Indore has always recognized the importance of the role that a mentor can play in the life of a student, whether they are still in school or are just beginning their journey into the corporate world. The act of offering advice and life experience to one who is seeking guidance forms a bond that is not easily broken between individuals and can serve to be mutually beneficial to both. It is in celebration of this unique relationship that Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore recently held Mentorship Week across the Indore campus as a means of both honoring and facilitating the link shared between mentors and their protégés.

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore has developed a distinctive mentorship program that assists students seeking additional leadership, be it in the fields of academia or business. This mentorship program combines academic and industry experience to create a bridge for students as they transition from the academic environment to the corporate environment. The goal of the mentorship program is to ensure that students get the most out of their experience at the insitute, while being able to take their acquired school knowledge and transforming it into knowledge that they can take into their corporate life.

This mentorship week began with an idea from Dr. Nitin Merh who crafted a proposal for every faculty mentor. The proposal suggested that every faculty mentor take their students for an outing that would combine education with a chance for some fun. This proposal was then adopted into a trip to Nakhrali Dhani, an ethnic village resort that reflects the Rajasthani and Malwi cultures. The trip was a chance for both the mentors and their charges to spend time with one another, while also enjoying the rich warmth and rustic charm of the festivals that are generally held in Nakhrali Dhani.

Not surprisingly, the trip was a huge success with all those who were involved. While engaging in such activities as riding on camels, students were able to spend time with their respective mentors in an atmosphere that was conducive to learning. As Professor Arindam Saha stated, “Mentorship helps us to interact with one another and increases the understanding among students as well as the mentor. The concept of the trip was an interesting one, and more activities like this should be planned to fully reap the benefits for both the students and their mentors.” Additionally, Aman Kumar, a student who attended the event has this to say about the trip, “Besides all of the activities that took place, we had a lot of fun and forged a strong bond of togetherness and openness with our menotrs that enabled us to share our thoughts and ideas.”

Overall, students from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore experienced immense opportunity over the course of the event. Along with their mentors, the students were given a chance of acquiring guidance towards achieving their dreams and attaining long-term success. Prof. Megha Jain describes the whole process significantly well- “Mentoring is the process that can elevate your professional capabilities exponentially. It involves a long term relationship where person becomes your trusted ally and feels you motivated whenever you are need his/her support.”

VALEDICTION

In this session, Dr. Anil Khandelwal, Former Chairman and Managing Director, Bank Of Baroda, shed light on how success can be achieved, making his audience sit up and take notice. He said, “Those who do not face rejection will never be entitled to personal growth; facing pain and rejection makes you successful.” He drew on his personal example where he almost lost his job when politicians criticised him for using orange colour in the new logo of Bank Of Baroda. He said it was seen as his allegiance to the BJP. But Dr. Khandelwal was quick to respond to the criticism as he said, “I’ll remove the colour in the logo as soon as you remove the colour in the Indian flag.” Thus he concluded that higher the risk one takes; greater is the chance of gain.

It was the right note for the conference to end as it had been enriching for the participants who were looking forward to take the ideas they learned to their classrooms and future careers. Said Mansi Srivastava “Not every day, do you get a chance to listen to such well known speakers who are experts in various fields. The company is known for producing innovative products and offering them to consumers at reasonable prices. From automotive head lamps to halogen lamps, fog lamps to work and LED lamps, the company produces a wide range of products that have become a well-known name in the market.
At the manufacturing unit visited on the day, students were taken through all the processes involved in the light manufacturing unit.

It was an exciting experience for the inquisitive visitors took an avid interest in the production set-up. They were guided by their mentor Dr. Nidhi Vashishth and also received valuable inputs from the managers at the company who were eager to help nurture the young minds.

It was a complete, all-round experience that Nazmeen Khan was looking for: “It was great to see all the theoretical knowledge applied to practical life. I was also inspired by the conversations we had with the managers who taught us a few new things. I will remember what we learned from this day for a long time to come,” she said.

For Jaipuria Jaipur students, Naila Village was the classroom for a day

On Christmas Eve, while the world was in a holiday mood, 40 PGDM students of Jaipuria, Jaipur were having their once in a lifetime experience. Their Rural Marketing course took them to Naila Village in Kanota Tehsil. The idea of the visit was to get acquainted with the rural life and understand the culture, challenges and opportunities it presents, first hand. And the trip served that purpose to a great extent.

It may be recalled that Naila was the only village that President Bill Clinton visited on his official trip to the country. There clearly had to be something special about the village, as the students found out under the expert guidance of course instructor Dr. Sheenu Jain and Dr. Nidhi Vashisth. Not only did they get a chance to explore the local culture but understand more about communication and marketing in a rural setup. Like student Akshita Gupta noted, “It was a great way to learn more about and experience life in rural India.”

Jaipuria Institute of Management has always strived to help its students get real life learning experience besides classroom training. This initiative was another step in the same direction and hoped to sensitize future managers to the life in villages. It also aimed to encourage them to set up entrepreneurial ventures in these areas and create job opportunities for others.

Students ended up learning a lot about brands and marketing in rural India through what they witnessed firsthand. And it was certainly not what they had expected, as student Priti Singh recalled. “It was interesting to see major brands from Lux Cozi to Tide, Pepsi to Olay dominating the market. But there were a lot of fake products and cheap imitations to be found,” she said.

Thus the trip turned out to be an eye opener in many ways for students, who got to learn a lot from it. They got a fair idea about governance and much talked about development in villages. But importantly they could see it from the perspective of both; administration and the locals. In fact, students had the exciting opportunity of interacting with the locals, who shed more light on NREGA and Mid Day meals schemes. It was definitely interesting for students to understand the impact these schemes have had on locals and challenges they are faced with.

Another student, Govind Sharma was completely enthralled by the whole experience. “From being overwhelmed by the aroma of food being cooked around to being dazzled by vibrant colours of saris in stores and listening to locals speaking in their regional dialects, it was an exciting experience for our senses,” he gushed.

But the day to Naila wouldn’t have been complete without a visit Naila Fort Palace. It’s a private property owned by Mr Prathviraj Oberoi, Owner Oberoi group of Hotels and students found the tour around it quite fascinating. It was the perfect culmination for a day of learning as student Panav Chaddha summed it up. “An enjoyable and experiential, day long trip, which I wish hadn’t come to an end so quickly,” he said. His classmates probably echoed his sentiments.

Jaipuria Jaipur Placement Update

From Jodhpur to Jaipur and now all set for hitting the ground running, Nikita Thomas bags the placement of her choice

Nikita Thomas, a spritely young girl from Jodhpur comes to Jaipuria, Jaipur to pursue her management dreams. She’s specializing in Human Resources and Marketing, and believes her stint at the B School has helped her overall personality. And it was that confidence and outgoing nature that made her standout in placement interviews for Mancer Consulting Services Pvt. Ltd. So it wasn’t a surprise that she got hired as a Management Trainee with the reputed company, which she believes will be a major stepping stone for her career.

Talking about her experience during the all important interview with the company, Nikita says, “My social skills helped me make an impression. I was given situation based questions and had to think of solutions instantly. I managed to pull it off on the back of the confidence I had gained at my institute having gone through similar exercises involved in our learning process.”

Thus Jaipuria, Jaipur had prepared a small town girl like Nikita to take on the challenges in the real, big world out there. But for the young student there was a lot more to what she’d learned at the institute than professional learning. “Of course all my concepts were clear thanks to the academic excellence our institute focuses on. But it made a huge difference to my overall development as I had several opportunities to express myself. And it has helped me shed my inhibitions to a great extent,” she says thoughtfully.

Nikita believes that a professional program like hers is important for aspirants of the corporate world today. And that’s because it offers a holistic learning experience for young aspiring professionals. “You need to put your best foot forward in the professional walk of your life and a program like this can help you immensely.”

Nikita comes from an army family background, which she believes makes her more adaptable to situations evolving around her. Hence she feels she’d be able to take the new challenges of her job in her stride. “I think I’d be able to adapt to my company’s culture and perform well in my assigned role. I am a quick learner and with the training the company provides me I will be able to perform given the current market scenario,” she says confidently.

So what does Nikita think of the present market scenario in the first place? She ponders before replying, “The market scenario won’t affect you if you are hardworking and committed to your job. In fact, more turbulent the economy, greater is the scope for innovations and new opportunities. I am confident that I will grow professionally and make a place for myself in the company.”

Is there one particular aspect of her learning, personality that Nikita would like to bring to her job to make an impression? “I am a member of Media Relations Club at Jaipuria, Jaipur and it has helped me discover my writing talent. Perhaps I can contribute to the quarterly journal of my company at a later stage,” she says with a smile.

It’s Nikita’s effervescent self and outgoing personality that leaves a lasting impression. But she clearly has her head on her shoulders and it reflects in the advice she offers her juniors and future aspirants. “Broaden your horizons by participating in different activities and be open to learning. All of us get equal opportunities, what matters is how you explore and exploit them,” she says. Those seem to be words of experience as Nikita has made the most of the opportunity she got and is now raring to go.

FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Lucknow

Dr. Athar Mahmood stands as an example of what is best about Jaipuria Institute of Management

A strong faculty is a key component in the success of any educational institution. Cognitive growth of students stay directly proportional to the kind of faculty they learn from. The management at Jaipuria Institute of Management knows that this fact is a cornerstone of the educational process and prides itself on the strength of its faculty. This strength is especially personified at the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow in the form of Dr. Athar Mahmood.

If you ask a student at Jaipuria Lucknow to name one of the more unique and dedicated faculty members, chances are that Dr. Mahmood’s name will come up more often than not. A veteran of both the corporate and academic worlds, Dr. Mahmood made the switch to full-time professor at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. Based on the highly reputable name of the institution, Dr. Mahmood came to the campus in search of exposure to the fresh ideas of young minds beginning their educational career. As Dr. Mahmood states, “It has been an enthralling journey.”

In person, Dr. Mahmood exudes both humility and calmness, traits that allow him to speak both eloquently and with pinpoint precision. It is a combination of these abilities that have made him a popular fixture at Jaipuria, Lucknow. His enthusiasm is contagious as he speaks, and his ideas and expertise clearly display that when it comes to his work, he is clearly a no-nonsense individual.

In looking at the state of the overall business industry, Dr. Mahmood believes that along with conflict resolution, negotiation, and leadership, emotional intelligence is gaining the spotlight in the corporate world. Dr. Mahmood also participated in an international paper in conjunction with the University of Bucharest-Romania. Entitled, “Stress Management on Executives in Lucknow City & New Perspectives of Understanding Stress in Organizational Context”, the study went on to find that a large portion of corporate workers were under stress, either from official or personal issues. The study proved to be a challenge for Dr. Mahmood, but one that he readily embraced.

A native of Lucknow, Dr. Mahmood feels a special affinity for the city. Having seen the area grow in recent years, he finds the natives of Lucknow to be very flexible to change. This was especially true when it came to the citizens not only accepting, but actually living with, the relatively new mall culture in such a short span of time.

Students from throughout the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow also are quick to sing the praises of Dr. Mahmood. As student Tushar Panta states, “In theory classes, where students can seem to lose interest, it’s only Prof. Athar who keeps the students interested by keeping us actively involved via his exciting activities. His activities keep us extremely enthusiastic, and the OB theory we learn through these activities are hard to forget. We are not just hearing about the theory but are experiencing it. This is what makes him our favorite teacher on campus.”

In looking back on his career, Dr. Mahmood becomes particularly nostalgic. “My first year of academic work was vital. I started identifying my mentoring instincts. As they grew, becoming stronger and better, I knew there was no going back to the corporate world.” Dr. Mahmood goes on to expound how the air of fresh ideas and budding energy that accompanies a new batch of students each year is especially thrilling for him, creating more passion within him to continue his work and teaching.

Perhaps that is the best summation of Dr. Mahmood’s key characteristic: a never-ending zeal to continue working. When asked what makes Jaipuria Institute of Management different from other schools, he states, “Our respect for our people is the most unique quality.” His appreciation of the fact that Jaipuria Institute of Management values the individuality of each person is evident.

In the end, Dr. Mahmood displays his trademark humility when he says that his accomplishments pale in comparison to the satisfaction he gets from his students and their smiling faces. While some might disagree with Dr. Mahmood and his assessment on all that he has done, few would argue that he represents the best that Jaipuria Institute of Management has to offer.

And when they come back for a meet at the institute campus, they are bound to have stories of their victories, both professional and personal, to share. While the alumni were looking forward to catching up with their old mates and faculty, current students were waiting to be inspired.

There was much anticipation in the air when the event began on the beautiful Saturday evening. After the traditional lighting of lamps, which is a symbol of devotion to Goddess Saraswati, the activities for the day commenced. Dr. Prabhat Pankaj, Director, Jaipuria Jaipur gave the welcome address and set the ball rolling. He congratulated the former students for their professional achievements in different spheres and wished them the best for their future. He added, “Our alumni are a living extension of our institute and speak volumes about it. An event like this provides an opportunity to re-establish old ties and meet new family members.”

The address had its impact as it filled the institute’s “family” with pride and created a feeling of oneness amongst them. And that was precisely the idea behind an event like this, according to Dr. Anvay Bhargava, faculty member in charge of the Alumni Association. “A meet like this is especially required to create a forum for dialogue between the alumni, institute and current students, to set up a process of active participation of the alumni in the future development of the institute.”

That’s one of the reasons why elections for the office bearers of the Alumni Association were an integral part of the day’s proceedings. Mr. Deepak Asnani (Batch of 2008-10) was elected President, Ms. Prerna Bhadani (Batch of 2010-12) was elected Vice-President and Mr. Prakash Khanna (Batch of 2011-13) was the new Joint Secretary. Mr. Asnani was pleased with his election and mindful of the responsibilities his new position involved. But for now, he seemed thrilled to have had an opportunity to interact with his friends. “It was a wonderful experience meeting all my batch-mates and the institute should take such initiatives in the future as well,” he mentioned.

The evening shifted gear with a popular Folk Dance by the Girraj Lok Kala Mandal Group and other performances by students. It had turned into a cultural extravaganza that reached its pinnacle with the impressive play “Bhopal Ki Train” directed by Tapan Bhatt.

A lavish spread was organised for dinner, which also served as an opportunity for students, present and past, to mingle. The DJ then took over and everyone let their hair down, hitting the dance floor and making it a night to remember. While the alumni went back home with special mementos, it is the experience and memories of the event that they are likely to cherish for a long time. Ms. Prerna Bhadani, the new Vice President of the Alumni Association, has the last word as she says, “It’s always a happy feeling to visit the campus and Jaipuria, Jaipur always rocks.” That it certainly did on this truly special night.
