Janmashthami Celebrations

Abhishek Das
Jaipuria Lucknow

28th Aug, 2013: Krishna Janmashthami was recently celebrated by the students and faculty of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. The festival is a commemoration of the birth of the Hindu God, Krishna, and falls on the eighth day of Krishna Paksh. The event began at 6 PM with an introductory speech by Dr. S. R. Musanna, Director, Jaipuria Lucknow. It was followed by a musical act of the ‘Krishna Stuti Leela’ performed by students Deeksha, Sayani, Supriya, Bhavna, Shruti and Jatin. Another stage show of the ‘Krishna Leela’ was performed by Shekhar, Ankur, Mahima, Ankit, Dolly, Suraj, Ayushi and several other students, depicting various phases in Lord Krishna’s life. Both these presentations were greeted with great applause and enthusiasm. It was then time for the dance performances that took the audience’s breath away. First, it was the girl students who played gopis and enthralled the crowd. Then, a mesmerizing dance performance by Ajay Wadhwa (as Krishna) and several junior girls had the auditorium filled with applause.

A stunning Jhanki was set up on the campus and it drew the attention of all those who passed by, students and faculty alike. After the performances, the dance floor was thrown open to students and the air soon filled with the clacking of dandiyas. After a special dinner, seniors and juniors gathered in the meeting room to chant prayers in praise of Lord Krishna’s deeds. A traditional pooja to mark the birth of Lord Krishna was then performed at midnight.

The highlight of the event, however, was the breaking of the Dahi Handi, in which senior boys formed a human pyramid to reach the clay pot filled with butter. The event came to an end with the distribution of prasad, although the students went back with a lot more than that – they also had glorious memories of a fun-filled evening.

Jaipuria Indore’s Industry visit to Pratibha Syntex- The one-stop shop for brands like Nike, Adidas and Walmart

For any student at Jaipuria Institute of Management, after a certain point in time it is quite natural to get mixed up about industry visits since the curriculum includes so many of them! But if there is one industry visit that simply stands out for us at Jaipuria Indore, it is the business study trip to Pratibha Syntex.

However digital we grow and however flat the world grows, the smell of fresh yarn in a textile industry always pulls us back to basics. That was exactly the feeling that ran through the 20 students of the Batch of 2013-15 on the 31st of August 2013, when we entered Pratibha Syntex – one of the most trusted brands for all kinds of yarn manufacturing at Indore. The best part about Pratibha Syntex is that it is ideal for a student desirous of studying the entire manufacturing chain in the textile industry. Starting from cotton farming, to yarn manufacturing, fabric weaving and ultimately ending in the finished product- garment production– Pratibha Syntex does it all. We had the opportunity to visit one of their plants, which produces 100% Bio-Organic cotton yarn and fabrics. Meeting Mr. S. K.Chaudhary, CEO, Pratibha Syntex, was quite a revelation for all of us as, upon meeting him, we realised that entrepreneurship serves a purpose beyond business itself. Mr. Chaudhary seemed almost duty-bound to the 1000-odd employees, whose skills he used to generate employment for them.

The students of Jaipuria Indore were taken through various Quality Control and Quality Assurance systems and shown the CRM policies of an organisation that has as its clients, iconic brands like NIKE, ADIDAS, WALMART, WOOLWORTHS, CONFRO and PATAGONIA. Pratibha Syntex is one of the leading exporters of yarn to USA, Canada, Mauritius, South Africa and China, bringing in much needed FOREX in these trying times for the Rupee. Our journey began with the warehouse area, where raw cotton fibres of different lengths and density, purchased from different parts of India, were stocked. In order to get optimum density and quality of yarn, a process of blending and removing is undertaken, followed by Mixing, Blowing, Combing, Carding and then the Ring-frame process. After all these stages, the output is sent to a yarn conditioning plant. Once the yarn is manufactured, the ‘knitting’ department further converts it into fabric. The fabric is then subject to stringent quality inspections and processed for dyeing, where it is washed with chemicals and ‘discoloured’. The process continues seamlessly from ‘fabric’ to ‘garment’, and and finally culminates in printing and packaging as per the specifications of the brand.

As the day passed, a picture of the overall Scheme of Operations began to emerge before our eyes. We began to understand how resources were put to their optimum utilisation, and how the entire unit actually operated on set ethical and moral standards which staff, workers and even visitors had to comply with.

As is always the case when you are deeply engrossed in something, the time simply flew. Since our exposure and understanding was on-ground, hardly any of us faced any problems in filing our reports to the Placement Committee– which is mandatory at Jaipuria Institute of Management after every field trip or industry interaction.

Students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur learn the art of being impactful in leadership from Prof. T.V.Rao

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, chose its 7th Foundation Day to host the third edition of its acclaimed ‘Thought Leadership Lectures’. Apart from the students and faculty of Jaipuria Jaipur, leading members of Rajasthan’s corporate and social strata were present to listen to Dr. T.V. Rao, the founding father of the National HRD Network. Dr.Rao was speaking on the very necessary subject of ‘Leadership – how to make a difference’. With over 20 years of experience as a Professor at IIM-A, Dr.Rao is currently the Chairman of TVRLS, Ahmedabad, and is best known for his business bestseller, Managers Who Make a Difference, published by IIM-A. An icon in his own right, Dr. Rao has groomed and nurtured more than 10,000 managers during his career.

“Managers can be Doers, Achievers, Visionaries and Missionaries. But joining an unusual place and creating a different place is the characteristic of a leader.”

During his spell-binding lecture, Dr. T.V. Rao drew heavily upon examples of sublime Indian leaders, such as Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Dr. Varghese Kurien, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Deepak Parekh, Ravi Mathai, N.R. Narayana Murthy, and Kunwer Sachdev. He amplified his contention that the essence of thought leadership lay in the truism, “To be different from others, you need to think different.”

As the Guest of Honour for the occasion, Dr. Ashok Bapna (Member, State Planning Commission Rajasthan), dwelt on what sets good leaders apart.
“Some characteristics of good leaders are: adhering to the 360 degree feedback principle, knowing one’s own strengths and weaknesses, spreading knowledge among others, having in-built personal and interpersonal skills, having entrepreneurship skills, etc.”

However, the best of the 3rd Thought Leadership Lecture came at the end, in the form of a dynamic Q&A session. Through a series of questions, the budding managers of Jaipuria Jaipur were able to address the current leadership crunch in the country. Dr. Rao, with disarming candour, pointed out that leaders in some areas, and particularly politics, suffer from a divisive mind-set; he said they also promote divisiveness because of their short-term orientation. “When leaders substitute their vision with narrower goals or short-term benefits, they become self-centred and resort to all sorts of tactics to win. India gives tremendous opportunity for these leaders to use these tactics. By its very complexity, India is susceptible to division by groups, and this gives rise to people willing to exploit the situation by bringing up differences in religion, caste, language, etc. Those who have narrower interests- whether in an organisation or in the country- can exploit these differences and kill development. It happens in organisations and it happens at the state and country levels as well. The solution is a long drawn battle of social change.”

Dr. Rao underscored the fact that the root of divisiveness in the country still remains the caste system and that it may take several decades to get out of this. He closed with the thought-provoking observation that “Gen-Y is a big hope for all of us… but Gen-X may not give them a chance”.

In their concluding remarks, both Dr. Pankaj Gupta (Director General, Jaipuria Institute of Management) and Dr. Prabhat Pankaj (Director, Jaipuria Jaipur) agreed that Dr. Rao’s lecture was easily one of the finest heard in Jaipuria Jaipur. They encouraged students to take home the invaluable lessons of the lecture and think big.

Industry Interface session with Mr. Subodh Shrivastava and Mr. Aksh Joshi of Kirloskar Brothers Ltd. was an enlightening experience for Jaipuria Indore students

Aman Kumar
Batch 2012-2014
Jaipuria Institute of Management has always worked to find a balance between theoretical and practical education for its students. The fact is well reflected in the Industry Interface Sessions that it conducts all across its campuses, helping students learn from the experience of industry stalwarts. One such session was held at Jaipuria Indore on 28th August. Mr. Subodh Shrivastava (Vice President and Business Head) and Mr. Aksh Joshi (Associate Manager) from Kirloskar Brothers Ltd. were guest lecturers for the event.

The corporate head honchos offered their audience valuable insights into management concepts and shared their experiences with students. According to student Nikita Gaur, “It was a unique experience because we got to learn from the best. Listening to them was inspiring, and it opened our eyes about how things function in the corporate world.”

Mr. Shrivastava stressed on the importance of keeping up with pattern changes in business and encouraged students to be aware of their core competencies. Nikita recalls, “He also asked us to be true to our SWOT analysis. He helped us understand the importance of action words and verbs, and how careful we should be about using them.” Mr. Shrivastava also emphasised the value of living up to one’s words and performing accordingly.

When it came to being one step ahead of competitors, Mr. Shrivastava had smart advice for everyone present there. He talked about the JBT – Just Before Time – approach, which seemed to have resonated with students who already face competition in their present learning environment. ‘Push and Pull’ market strategies and the ‘Buyer Market’ scenario were some of the other concepts he elaborated on during his talk.

Meanwhile, Associate Manager Mr. Aksh Joshi focussed on Marketing and Distribution strategies. He talked about his own experiences and strategies that were implemented in his organisation to boost the Supply Chain network. He also focussed on ways he offered incentives to channel partners through the “Anmol Rishtey” programme, retailers through the “Kirloskar Family Bonanza” and influencers through the “Captain Bonanza” programme.

By talking about these real strategies used by his company, Mr. Joshi made his talk lively and more relatable for the students. The guest lecturers then moved on to discussing the newly launched Storm Android apps to offer students further insights. These apps scan their complete network, business channels and services, and ensure that relevant data is instantly received. Replacement issues and damaged materials are also looked into with the help of this app.

These are new age techniques used by corporates today and students benefited immensely by knowing more about them. Mr. Shrivastava and Mr. Joshi also had helpful answers to questions students raised about impending placements and things they needed to do to start their future careers on the right note.

This exciting, inspiring and enlightening evening was concluded by Dr. Romy Sainy, faculty of Marketing at Jaipuria Indore, and the students went back a lot richer in experience.

Joel Matthew recounts the experience of the exciting Freshers party at Jaipuria, Jaipur.

The evening of 8th August 2013 remains memorable in many ways. It was the Fresher’s party for the much renowned PGDM course students after all. And the second year students rolled out a red carpet welcome for freshers and turned the evening into an extravaganza that no one can forget in the near future.

The party room was decorated to the hilt with sheets of all shapes and sizes, prints and colours to create the perfect setting for the evening. The joie de vivre of the organizers and everyone who was a part of the event added to its charm and made it an evening to remember.

The night of revelry began when the doors to the venue were thrown open at 5.30 pm. Flashing lights and loud music accompanied the buzzing start. Second year PGDM students, the hosts of the evening then applied Tilak to the faculty and welcomed them into the smartly decorated auditorium.

Jaipuria Institute of Management Dean (Student Affairs), Dr Abhijit Nair kicked off the evening by saying, “It’s the fresher’s day today; hope all of you succeed in whatever you do, make the most of your skills, enjoy your day and all the best for your future endeavours.”

Everyone at the party was dressed for the occasion and their anticipation about the evening was evident in their every move. It only added to the ambience and mood of the evening, which of course was energetic and lively throughout.

The first year batch put on a dance sequence to begin the revelry and it was greeted by a loud cheer. Melodious songs and dramatics created the perfect party mood, which was much appreciated by all.

However, it all seemed like a build up to the most eagerly awaited event of the evening; Mr and Miss Fresher 2013. After several rounds of questions laced with humour that tested contestants’ intellect and wit, Mr. Salman Khan and Ms. Ishpreet Kaur were chosen as Mr. and Miss Fresher 2013.

The dance floor was then opened for students who swayed to the electrifying music played by the DJ. Two hours on, students were dancing the night away and the fun didn’t seem to stop. A lavish spread of mouth watering food completed the fun-filled experience on this eventful evening.

The HR Conclave at Jaipuria Noida debated on role of HR- Centre or Circumference

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida is in continuous pursuit of all-round excellence in management education through narrowing the gap between academia and industry. To that end, the HR Club, IPSA, under the area of Human Resource Management organised a day-long in-campus HR CONCLAVE on the theme “HR – Centre or Circumference” on Saturday, 24th August 2013. While addressing a very relevant debate on the topic of HR – Centre or Circumference in the arena of Human Resource Management, the conclave aimed at providing an enriching experience to the student community from within Jaipuria Noida, as well as to sister campuses, particularly those specialising in HR. The conclave was well attended by the students and faculty of the institute, research scholars and members from the media. The attendees were both enthused and enlightened by the captivating speeches, presentations and deliberations of the highly knowledgeable and experienced panel members, who were top HR executives from a wide variety of organisations. They were divided into three panels, namely: HR as Strategic Business Partner, HR as Change Agent, and Contemporary HR Practices. The overall ambience of the carefully readied Auditorium-1 on the ground floor and the expectant mood of the eagerly waiting students of the institute seemed just right for the great day ahead of them. The following is a brief account of the event.

The conclave was inaugurated by the guests of honour, Mr. Gyanendra Singh (COO, Mancer Consulting Services) and Mr. Prashant P. Srivastava (HR Head, Orient Electricals of the CK Birla Group) in the presence of Dr. Rajiv R. Thakur, Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. The conclave was inaugurated with the traditional lighting of the lamp by the esteemed guests.

Dr. Rajiv R. Thakur welcomed the guests of honour and shared his thoughts on the theme of whether HR was in the Centre or Circumference, wherein he introduced theme and sub-themes of the conclave. Mr. Gyanendra, in his inimitable style, eloquently shared his thoughts in terms of how HR leads from the front in managing core HR functions and the value additions done by the HR stakeholders in the process. Mr. Prashant sounded very convinced about HR’s role at the “centre” of many organisations. He advised all HR stakeholders about how to align themselves for the three stages of an employee’s tenure in an organization – -the employee joining an organisation, being in the organisation and then exiting the organization. Both speakers concluded that in order to be in the centre, HR personnel must understand their responsibility towards the business, objectives and mission of the organisation.

After the inaugural session, the conclave proceeded to its first panel discussion on the theme ‘HR as Strategic Business Partner’. Dr. V. P. Singh (ED & Chief Pupil, Devyani International) opened the discussion and said that HR’s strategic role as business partner is more to do with economic value addition in the overall performance of the organisation. He deliberated that in every HR function, right from acquiring employees to their exit, HR people have to continuously ensure value addition. He said that merely knowing and performing HR functions is not enough; one would need to have diverse knowledge of other areas of operations, like production, marketing, sales and distribution. The other panelist, Mr. Rohin Dhar (HR Head, Amplifon India Pvt. Ltd.), engaged the audience by asking their views on how HR plays the role of business partner. While modifying the responses of students, he emphasised that HR professionals should work upon their credibility deficit. He said that HR plays a pivotal role in people planning and their management. Dr. Amar Nath Chatterjee (Adjunct Professor, Jaipuria Noida), while moderating the panelists’ opinions, deliberated that HR should not focus only on profit generation, but also on the growth and development of employees in the organisation. He shared couple of strategic business models which showed how HR could be aligned with the business of an organisation. He concluded the panel discussion by reflecting that that the theme of the conclave, ‘HR – Centre or Circumference’, was like asking him to choose between the head or the heart; in his view, HR embraced every corner of today’s organisations.

The second panel discussion involved stalwarts like Mr. Indranil Mitra (AGM-HR, NTPC) and Mr. Rajeev Kakkar (GM-HR, JK Group). While elaborating on the sub-theme, ‘HR as Change Agent’, both speakers emphasised the transactional and transformational roles of HR and claimed that the latter was the most instrumental in managing and implementing change in an organisation. They emphasised that HR people needed to be part of the change, while understanding the organisation’s needs and their implications. They summed up their thoughts by saying, “People don’t leave an organisation; they leave their bosses”.

The final and concluding panel discussion at the conclave was on the theme ‘Contemporary HR Practices’. Mr. NC Sharma (Director-HR, Country Inn & Suites) talked about the current trends in HR and shred his concerns about how new inventions like competency mapping, etc., were not yielding the desired results. He laid emphasis on bridging the gap between the employees’ skills sets and the organisation’s requirement. Ms. Parul Arora (Freelance Trainer & Academician and Ex. HR Lead, All e-Technologies) talked about performance-driven compensation, employee engagement and revenue generation by HR professionals as the need of the hour. She emphasised the role of the HR team in centre and advised her listeners that to manage HR, one needed to be with people and just not rest back in one’s cubical. Mr. Anshumal Dikshit (HR-Head, I-Gate Solutions) gave as his opinion that HR professionals must keep themselves abreast with the changes rapidly taking place in the economy and in the market. Only after that should they should plan and introduce new interventions in managing HR. He shared current fancy designations in the field of HR, such as “Chief Trouble Officer”, “HR BP”, “Chief Fun Manager”, “Hunter Valley”, etc., in organisations.

The students showed their interest and responded with great enthusiasm while putting up questions to the panelists and guests speakers. The conclave concluded with thundering applause and drew to a close with the vote of thanks proposed by Prof. Abdul Qadir (Coordinator – HR Conclave). Prof. Qadir acknowledged all those who contributed towards the grand success of the day-long conclave, with a special mention for the HR Club bearers and conclave organising committee, IPSA.

Jaipuria Noida STUDENT Speaks

“My Swiss sojourn is a milestone in my life.”

Summer University 2013 was a life changing experience for me. Jaipuria Noida’s exchange programme with HEIG-VD in Yverdon les Bains, Switzerland, helps students understand the differences between companies and their functioning in Switzerland, China and India. Only four students were chosen for the exchange programme, and I was thrilled to be one of them. The day we reached Switzerland, we were given a warm welcome by the faculty coordinator from the Swiss University (HEIG-VD), Prof. Laurance Larghi. The professor, after having made introductions, left us with French Survival Classes, and our astonishing journey of 25 days began.

The three days of French classes were filled with fun and while we spent the first half learning the language, the second half was spent practicing it on ground! The fun and learning was enhanced by the fact that the faculty members who had accompanied us were learning with us and it gave us naughty pleasure to be quicker than them in picking up the language. Our company visits began on the fourth day and for this, we were first introduced to our student team members from HEIGH-VD. There was an ice-breaking session and soon we all forgot our nationalities. We were divided into working students groups and the visits began. We worked very hard and enjoyed ourselves equally. There were several picnics organised by the institute and then we had some of our own too. We also went for a trek with the faculty and students and a spontaneous competition developed as we raced each other. Good food, good companions…. the whole trip seemed like a dream!

Some of the companies we visited were Nescafe, Nestle, Strid and Creabeton. We learnt a lot during these visits and interviewed their managers and employees. The Nestle visit was especially exciting for everyone, with free chocolates being handed out to eat and carry away! We also visited the Swiss army museum. We almost didn’t sleep the entire 25 days, but no one complained with all the fun we were having.

Finally, we were ready with our project presentations, which went exceptionally well. We went for one last picnic and then it was time to go home. Amidst emotional farewells and videos and pictures, we came back thoroughly satisfied with our learning. The main learning from the trip for me was, “Wake up, start living your dreams, take action. Stay focused, sharp and diligent. Never give up on your dreams and your dreams will never give up on you.”

Jaipuria Noida STUDENT Speaks

Students of Jaipuria Noida have the time of their lives on the Swiss exchange programme

For students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, the experience of travelling with their teachers for an exchange programme in HEIG-VD in Yverdon Les Bains, Switzerland was an opportunity not to be missed. Student exchange programmes are all about understanding new ways of learning, often seeing things from diametrically different points of view and broadening one’s horizons. This programme seems to have lived up to all that and then some. The Swiss are known all over the world for their punctuality and that’s something the students of Jaipuria experienced first-hand. Everything, from trains in the country to the itinerary of the visitors, moved with clockwork precision. Their exchange faculty member from HEIG-VD University, Ms.Laurance Larghi, took the importance of timeliness to a whole new level, prompting Prof. Anurag Singh to comment, “There’s Swiss time and then there’s Prof. Larghi time.”

However, the lesson of always being on time as professionals wasn’t lost on the students. In fact, they realised that, “Time is the only capital that any human being has, and the only thing he can’t afford to lose”, said Geetika Goyal. This understanding set the tone for the trip, and the students decided to make the most of their time on the exchange programme.

Students and faculty from Jaipuria Noida were charmed by the warmth and hospitality of the Swiss. They were made to feel at home during their trip to the country and got to experience the much talked-about Swiss hospitality. Over time, the students were also impressed by the emphasis on the environment in the country, a message they have brought back home with them.

Switzerland has been an advocate for world peace for a long time and takes pride in its neutrality. Students learned a lot about that during their interactions on the programme. Whether it was getting new perspectives on long-held opinions, or something as simple as noticing parents walking on the roads with their babies in prams for complete convenience and control, students had many eye-opening experiences throughout the trip.

They also developed an insight into Swiss culture, which is a mix of several European cultures. While the three main languages spoken are German, French and Italian, the cultural diversity is immense and proved to be fascinating to Jaipuria students.

The students learned a lot about the world beyond India through a whole new culture, but they also kept a focus on the experiential learning of work-places in a foreign country. They noticed that everything worked with precision and utmost efficiency and also realised that the Swiss give a lot of importance to work ethics and quality. And according to the students, that makes for the perfect work environment where people can find the right balance between their professional and personal lives. Now that is something this group of students hopes to manage in their future careers too.

Alumni Speak Jaipuria Lucknow

Deepak Singh, from the founding batch of 1995-1997, walked on the path of self-discovery to success at Jaipuria Lucknow

There are many aspiring students who come to Jaipuria Institute of Management to brighten their career prospects. But Deepak Singh’s journey was slightly different; he claims that he succumbed to parental and peer pressure before deciding to pursue management studies. He got selected to Jaipuria Lucknow and hasn’t looked back since; today he has a flourishing career in media to his credit.

“As a 22 year old, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life. An MBA seemed to be the most sought-after degree. It promised a fat pay check, a white-collar designation and a cushy job,” says Deepak Singh. Thus the youngster from Lucknow began his journey with the reputed institute in 1995; he was part of Jaipuria Lucknow’s founding batch.

Today, Deepak is based in the US and works as a writer and journalist in Indiana. His impressive resume lists BBC World Service as one of his employers. He has also featured on NPR’s affiliate WVTF, PRI’s The World, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and World Vision Report.

But Deepak realises that his aspirations and skills truly gained momentum at Jaipuria Lucknow, where his horizons were broadened to a large extent. “Studying with students from diverse backgrounds coming from all over the country was a learning experience in itself,” he says. Through the exchange of ideas and lively discussions amongst each other, students began to shape their ideas of the world around them in a most constructive manner.

Deepak also gives credit to his professors for making learning an exciting and engaging process for him. “Highly professional and experienced professors made the most mundane subjects intellectually stimulating,” he remembers. And that’s what kept students motivatedand on their toes throughout their programme.

The years at Jaipuria Lucknow were an eye-opening experience for him in many ways, and he says, “I learned who I was, what I believed in, and what I wanted from life. And that is the most valuable asset I still have. My mind started to become clutter-free, and my thought processes clearer.”

Today Deepak has made a name for himself in the world of media. As a freelance journalist, radio producer and writer, he divides his time between India and the US. So, does he have any advice for future students? “Follow your heart and give it your hundred percent. Money will follow and you will always be happy,” says the man who has found his true calling.
