FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Noida

Dr. Rajiv Thakur, Director, Jaipuria Noida, Talks About Why Studying At Jaipuria Noida Has Become Such A Hit With The Current Generation

Dr. Rajiv Thakur took over as Director of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, in March this year. Having now settled well into his new role (prior to this he was the Director of Jaipuria Jaipur), Dr. Thakur has put in place a number of ‘Gen Y’-compliant initiatives. A PhD in Economics and an MBA from IIT-Delhi, before shifting to academia Dr. Thakur worked with the media industry for over 10 years and was associated with one of India’s leading media conglomerates at a senior managerial position. As an academician, Dr. Thakur has held prestigious appointments in the education industry. He has been actively involved in MDPs and research, and has published research papers in international/national journals, as well as presented them at international conferences.

The Media Relations Club of Jaipuria Noida talks to Dr. Thakur about what makes ‘brand Jaipuria’ click and what his thrust areas as Director will be.

MRC Thank you for your time, Sir. Every leader has a short-term and a long-term vision for the organisation. Can you share some of the goals that you are working towards?
Dr. Thakur – Anything we do in the short term or medium term has to be aligned with the long-term vision of the institute. We are strongly guided by the vision of the Chairman, that in the next five years we should be among the top three institutes in northern India. In order to achieve this, our focus is on delivering value to our students and industry, in sync with the higher standards of these testing times. This we successfully do by closely interacting with our partners in industry and understanding their needs. This understanding leads us to look into our curriculum, deliveryand engagement with the students. Due to this, the learning outcome is purely skill-based and in keeping with industry standards and requirements. Of course, the behavioural aspects of this generation and new technological tools play a big role in deciding what we deliver and how we deliver it. Increasing complexities, pace and dynamism in the environment, society and the market – which all have global dimensions – also require the learning to be researched based. We also have to ensure that students develop the aptitude to think, analyse and come to their own conclusions and inferences about problems and situations. This is something that leads to innovation through the value chain, which is key to the success of business today.

MRC How has your industry experience helped you in academics and administration? Are there any particular experiences you would like to share?
Dr. Thakur – Luckily, time and success has made me believe that this combination did provide me with an edge in managing things better. While academics have been a passion – and one enjoys growing as an academician – industry experience did help me to bring in a result-oriented approach to academic administration. Having an approach that is outward-looking and reaches out to industry and society has helped me to build institutions that are responsive to the needs of the time. It helps me in taking initiatives that are of high impact for the outer world and not simply confined to the boundaries of the institution.

MRC – You have now been the Director of two Jaipuria campuses – Jaipur and Noida. In your opinion, what makes Jaipuria different from other institutes? What has been your experience of working with both these campuses?
Dr. Thakur – Engagement with students and the effort to provide real value to students are the two areas in which ‘brand Jaipuria’ would surpass even the IIMs today. Much of this is because of the commitment levels. Right from the top management to the support staff or security staff, everybody gives his or her best. The role of the faculty as mentors to each student is something unique about Jaipuria.
Regarding the difference between the Noida and Jaipur campuses, both these institutes, though woven commonly in terms of their basic ethos and values, are at different stages of their life cycles. Jaipur, being a relatively new campus, has priority areas requiring a very different strategy than what would be required here at Noida, which is well established. Building, or rather rejuvenating the Jaipuria Jaipur brand was a memorable experience, where each and every member contributed day in and day out. At Noida, our focus is more on research, industry interface and preparing our students to scale great heights and setindustry standards. This is very much in keeping with our vision of being among the top three B-schools in north India in the next five years.

MRC – Jaipuria keeps organising seminars and workshops for students. What should they take away from these forums? How can they benefit most?
Dr. Thakur – Besides the learning and exposure they get from the sessions and talks on contemporary and relevant topics, students gain a lot in terms of organisational skills and leadership skills. They should look to building on their confidence by interacting with participants who are from various strata of the corporate world, industry and society at large. Further, there are always opportunities fora select few students to directly participate in researching and making presentations on the subject. My advice to students is to grab these opportunities with both hands, as they are rich learning experiences. These conferences and seminars also spread a positive account of Jaipuria through word of mouth, which enhances brand value and ultimately benefits the students’ association with Jaipuria.

MRC – Away from your responsibilities, what do you enjoy most in your spare time?
Dr. Thakur(smiles) Quite frankly, there is very little spare time available. Most of it goes into contemplating the pros and cons, thinking things through, and yes – watching TV talk shows. Of course, spending quality time with family is what I like.

MRC – Would you like to share your success mantra with us?
Dr. Thakur – At your stage, what matters most is confidence. And confidence can only come with knowledge and abilities that you develop. So be honest to your work and make hard work second nature.

67th Independence Day Celebrations at Jaipuria, Jaipur

Not just speeches but getting inspired from people who are making a difference.

15thAugust, 1947 marked the beginning of a new era, the age of independence, and this month we celebrated our 67th year of freedom from foreign rule. As our Director, Dr. Prabhat Pankaj said, today’s youth are on the verge of forgetting the true meaning of struggle, which brought us our democracy. He gave us a quick look back at the many battles fought in those days of savage colonisation.

Standing in the audience, I learned at an emotional and intellectual level about the cost paid for being an independent citizen. All of us stood with renewed zeal and vigour when the tricolour was hoisted a short while later. At the start of the Independence Day celebrations, we entered the auditorium expecting philosophy slew of tediously long speeches but to our surprise, there was something new in store. We were introduced to a new world of caring through an NGO called CRY-Child Rights and You. We had the chance to interact with Ms.Bharti, a corporate lawyer by profession and a very involved volunteer with CRY. Based in Jaipur at present, she is devoting her time to advocating for the Right to Education for all children. She talked to us about the altruism of the founders, who heard the cry of children in need and worked to protect their basic human rights. Her dedication to the cause was clearly visible during her speech, as she encouraged us to stand up and work towards a better future of our motherland. She asked to recognise the dire need that many of our brothers and sisters were in.

After this moving and impactful session, our student performers enthralled the audience with the sheer beauty of their performance. The dance acts and desh bhakti songs sung with great passion created a new aura of patriotism in the auditorium. There was a mime act, which gave a silent portrayal of the true meaning of freedom. The programme ended with our silent prayers and humble words of thanks for all the courageous souls who gave their lives for the freedom we celebrate today.

Happy Independence Day to all.

Industrial visits start right from Orientation at Jaipuria Jaipur PGDM 2013-15

In the scorching heat of the summer in Rajasthan, we were on a bus on our way to the very first industrial visit of the batch of 2013-15. The bus journey was a wonderful time for all of us to bond with each other. But as we entered the realm of the famed Kagzi industry, the carefree chitchat and random thoughts were replaced by an awed silence. Established in 1996, Kagzi is an ISO approved industry with a turnover from around INR 5 Crore to INR 25 Crore. It is a decades-old industry with export connections in Australia and Europe, setting an outstanding example of how even a small idea, when approached with confidence, can make a huge difference.

The buzz of conversations between 300 craftsmen, the sound of water mixing with the cotton balls, the hum of machines, the vibrant spreads and shreds of papers… all these activities united to make a wondrous spectacle. Clips hanging above drying sheets of handcrafted papers – beyond the reach of our hands – enthralled our eyes with the sheer beauty of colours. We experienced the delight of being in the presence of workers who answered our doubts and queries with humility of true artisans. There were ladies who were expertly sorting out the scraps and clothes, and then boiling and churning the scraps in huge machines with added colour. The scraps were then put on a sieving tray, wrapped on both sides with a cloth and pressed. After pressing, the paper was hung for drying. The excellent craftsmanship and creativity was worthy of praise. The diligence and dedication of the craftsmen towards their craft was truly inspiring for us and we watched them completely engrossed.

The owner, Mr. Mohammad Sharif – an entrepreneur who specialises in manufacturing and exporting handmade paper made from old scraps, clothes and used paper – is truly a great man, making the ‘best out of waste’.

While most visitors restrict themselves to visiting just the manufactured product outlet, the Kagzi factory opened its inner sanctum to the students of Jaipuria Jaipur. For me personally, the printing on the dried paper was the most eye-catching part of the process. We were told that the paper lasts for more than 10 years. Despite going through the entire manufacturing procedure, it was still dazzling to see the final product at the Kagzi outlet.

We returned with many memories that we would hold on to over time… till the next time.

“Jaipuria Jaipur prepares us for life beyond academics as well”, shares Joel M. Mathew

Joel Mathew loves interacting with people, getting into their minds and figuring out the dynamics between groups. She wants to be an HR professional as she finds herself deeply interested in the study of human motivations and behavior. A final year student of PGDM HR & Marketing at Jaipuria Jaipur, she completed her B.Sc.in Botany, Zoology and Psychology from International College for Girls (ICG),Jaipur. Joel was already convinced by the reputation that Jaipuria enjoyed in her city, and an interaction with some of the faculty further helped her decide to join the institute. She describes her journey so far as fantastic. “Jaipuria has given me everything I wanted. To me, it’s my second home where I am led to walk upon the path of truth by keeping my ethics alive.”

Gravita India Limited, Jaipur, chose Joel for a summer internship. Gravita is an SME, and is one of the leading business groups in India operating in the field of manufacturingLead and its allied products. She interned with the HR department in the recruitment and selection vertical. Recognising the immense learning she got on the job, she says, “This internship really helped me identify my strengths and weaknesses while working in a corporate set-up. I even got a chance to sit on an interview panel with the company’s experts and that allowed me to experience the recruitment process from close quarters.” Joel thanks her industry mentor, Paritosh Vaishnav and Gravita DGM, Rohit Mathur for their support and motivation, without which she believes she would not have been able to complete her internship.

“The internship,” says Joel, “has made me calm and patient. I realised that I could survive adversity only when I kept my cool.” She also believes that interpersonal skills are a must to be able to do a good job and is grateful for all that she learnt about people, networking and getting the work done at Jaipuria. She also realised that the role of an HR person is crucial in hiring people who are the ‘right fit’ for the organisation.

Some students even got placed with their dream companies, such as Fortis and Coca Cola. I was thrilled with my internship because I am focused on Recruitment and Selection, and Gravitahas provided a great start to my career.”

A travel enthusiast, singer and dancer, Joel aspires to establish herself as an HR professional in a reputed organisation. She is convinced that she is meant to work in that sphere and is working hard towards making her dreams come true.

In a bid to give its students a real life work experience to enhance leaning, Jaipuria Noida organises Summer Internship programmes and Kirti got a “golden opportunity” to work with the HR department of Investors Clinic Infratech Pvt. From launching an in-house magazine, to writing articles on current affairs featuring motivational stories, to working on an Employee Satisfaction Survey, Kirti got a chance to handle numerous different jobs. But for her, the professional relationships she managed to build within the company remain the highlight. “I could interact with different levels of management in the company and got a better idea of how corporates function,” she says, “and that knowledge will remain invaluable to me.” Besides Ms. Alvi at IC, Kirti also mentions the contributions of her faculty mentor Ms. Shalini Srivastava, who guided her through the internship. She is also filled with gratitude for Ms. Prerna Awasthi, who got her the opportunity with the company in the first place. I also had to learn to balance my work and personal life.”

For someone who loves to swim, drive and bake, these lessons are of great value for her long-term career. “I’ve also learned the importance of timeliness and getting it right in a superior-subordinate relationship,” says Kirti. Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida enables and empowers rather than teaches,” shares Eureka Dandapath

Eureka Dandapath is a hands-on person. She believes in doing rather than theorising and that’s what she loves the most about Jaipuria Noida. “Jaipuria Noida lays more emphasis on practical application than on theory and for this it brings in the best people from the corporate world as guest lecturers”. An aspiring marketing professional, Eureka completed her B.Tech. in Information Technology from RCEW, Jaipur. Owing to the excellent corporate, academic and industrial exposure that Jaipuria Noida gives to its students, Eureka decided to join Jaipuria Noida to pursue a degree in PGDM (Marketing).

As part of the requirements for her degree, Eureka completed her internship with Wildnet Technology, Noida as a marketing trainee. She was picked up by the company in the campus interview and went through three rounds, which included a group discussion and personal interview. Her experience, she believes, will help her with placements this year. , “Wildnet Technology is into internet marketing and mobile applications development. I was part of the business development team and had to deal with international clients, understanding their needs and accordingly convincing them to collaborate and enter into reseller partnerships or outsourcing.” The most exciting yet challenging part of the internship for her was the interaction with the clients in the UK, understanding their requirements and communicating with them. She worked directly under the Global Marketing Head and believes that this made her learning immense. Throughout her internship, Prof. Nimit Gupta from Jaipuria Noida, who made sure that all her confusions were resolved, ably supported her.

Jaipuria Noidahas achieved a hundred per cent internship placement this year and Eureka gives the credit to the Training & Placement department for this achievement and performance. The internship has given her a sound background in internet marketing, along with teaching her the value of being clear and confident about one’s own self, focusing on learning and having a passion for the work assigned. Apart from the internship, the journey at Jaipuria Noida itself has been a learning experience for her. “In this past one year,Jaipuria Noida has nurtured me a lot and I can feel the difference in myself. Jaipuria Noida has provided me with industrial exposure and with that, the faculty has always helped us focus on analysing things keeping their practical aspect in mind. I have been an active participant in several events have also won some of them. I have also coordinated many events for clubs like marketing, IT and dramatics. The whole 1st year was an amazing year of learning throughout.”

Alumni Speak Jaipuria Lucknow

Anand Kapoor, listed by Forbes as one of the Top 100 Indian Leaders in the UAE, says the seeds of his success were sown during his days at Jaipuria Lucknow

For many, Golf is just another game. For Anand Narain Kapoor, it is the epitome of precision and skill. On the greens, Anand is not just conscious of his own swing, but is constantly gauging the dynamics of the game as well as the immediate and long-term challenges. Golfing sense, for Anand Kapoor, is synonymous with business sense… a business sense that has catapulted him to the Forbes’ list of Top 100 Indian Leaders in the UAE.

“My birth place is in the heart of Uttar Pradesh – Kanpur – and Jaipuria has had a lasting effect on my life. I have done my schooling from Jaipuria School, Kanpur and after my graduation from Christ Church College in Kanpur, I pursued a post-graduation from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. Iwas part of the first batch that graduated from Lucknow in 1995. The college had just been set up, and it was conscious of the factors that constitute good management education and it endeavored to provide the students with a transformational experience. Jaipuria Lucknow gave me the platform to learn the dynamics of the corporate world and empowered me to innovate and establish myself as a successful entrepreneur.”

The 40 year old Indian entrepreneur is currently based out of Dubai. After passing out of Jaipuria Lucknow in 1995, Anand moved to Uganda to work for an East African Bank. After spending time understanding the local business climate, he set up a FOREX bureau in Uganda. In 1999, he purchased a 40 acre site on the banks of Lake Victoria near Entebbe in Uganda and started growing and exporting rose stems. He further consolidated his business by taking over an international school in Uganda. However, the best was yet to come.

His biggest venture to date came with the birth of MiDCOM, the telecommunications arm of the Midland Group. In Africa, he secured the distribution for Nokia in Rwanda and set out to establish a deep distribution network. Alongside growing MiDCOM from 2004, Anand also continued to diversify his business portfolio by foraying into Real Estate. He set up a state-of-the-art commercial complex in Kampala, Uganda, and followed it up with Kololo Greens, some of the most luxurious residential apartments in Uganda. He also initiated a commodity trade division involving sugar, rice, paper and tyres. With a formidable presence in 12 countries, Anand Kapoor’s company is now a prominent player in the Indian, African and Middle Eastern markets. His most recent venture is in the dairy sector, where the group has set up Pearl Dairy Farms. Anand carries his desire to excel over to the golf course as well. He recently lifted the Chairman’s Cup on the 25th anniversary of the Emirates Golf Club in 2013.

“Being a part of the Forbes’ list was certainly on my bucket list; it’s just that I did not expect it to happen so early in life. On the face of it, being listed in Forbes and being awarded amongst the top Indian leaders in the UAE seems like an individual achievement. While it is an incredible feeling and makes me very proud, the fact of the matter is that the credit goes to the entire team whose hard work has enabled my organisation to grow and reach where it is today. In this era of cut-throat competition, focus, competence and passion are the determining factors for success.”

Anand admits that he has been rather bold with some of his business decisions and entered countries where businesses usually fear to operate. But he’s very happy about the fact that he has spent the majority of his professional life making a difference to the African community with his business. He advises the youngsters at Jaipuria that being ‘innovators’ is not enough; a good entrepreneur has to be a ‘dreamer’ and a ‘worker’.

“Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams,” Anand concludes with a knowing smile. “They will take you places.”

Industry stalwarts interact with new students at various locations on Business Etiquette, Management Ethics and CSR

The 2013 academic year got off to a trademark grand start at Jaipuria Institute of Management. A 10-day Orientation Programme, held across the four Jaipuria campuses at Lucknow, Noida, Jaipur and Indore, proved to be of immense learning value to the joining batch.

“This year, we made sure that corporate leaders from as many different sectors and areas as possible were able to share their expectations with the students,” says R. K. Rishiraj (Head –Corporate Relations & Placements). “This will help students at Jaipuria get into the groove straightaway, and align their training to their target sectors.  There were speakers from Banking, Insurance, FMCG and Retail, as well as entrepreneurs, in functional areas of Marketing, Finance, Human Resources and Operations. Numerous alumni were also invited to share their experiences of Jaipuria and in industry as well. Topics like etiquette, ethical conduct and Corporate Social Responsibility were a critical part of the programme and were touched upon by almost every speaker, showing their increasing importance in the professional world.”

Media Relations Club, Jaipuria: An exciting platform

The Media Relations Club at Jaipuria Institute of Management is a student-led initiative that has already become a huge success in its first two years. Set up and followed across all locations -Lucknow, Jaipur, Noida and Indore -the MRC works towards building the Jaipuria brand. Interestingly, it also brings students, alumni, aspirants and corporate houses together onto the same dynamic platform.

In a bid to build brand Jaipuria, students come up with story ideas and feature events on the campus through different mediums, which are then showcased on the website.  Members also manage relationships with different media for campus events and look after the social media properties of Jaipuria.

For Amman Raza, PGDM student at Jaipuria Lucknow, being SPOC (Student Point of Contact) for the MRC was a challenging but satisfying experience. “I always used to look at websites of colleges when I wanted to find out more about them. The student life on campus, in particular, created a perception in my mind,” he says. With the MRC, he got a chance to create similar perceptions and hopes for other aspiring students.

The idea behind the initiative is to give students a chance to be the brand face of Jaipuria. And it does that very well, because MRC members are responsible for the coverage through various mediums. From managing contests for the Facebook page, to creating YouTube videos, their tasks are not only fun-filled but stoke the students’ creativity too.

Moreover, students get a chance to write for the website and get credit for their work. For Nikita Thomas, SPOCat Jaipuria Jaipur,it dovetailed wel lwith her keen interest in writing. “It was a tremendous learning experience working in the MRC with ESquared,” she says, as it made a big difference to her writing skills and overall confidence.

Aman Kumar, MRC member and PGDM student at Jaipuria Indore, recounts his experience as an enriching one, especially since it gave him deep insight into the way media function. Working round the clock and conquering problems are a part of the challenge for him and Taranjit Kaur, faculty coordinator, Jaipur. But Taranjit found “all MRC members hardworking and doing their best within their assigned roles,” which was a huge advantage.

Yes, MRC has clearly defined roles for its members and one can be a campus journalist, photographer, interviewer, video person, social media handler and SPOC/content planner.

Selected members of the MRC get to work under the supervision of the faculty for a year. Dr.Bhavya Raj, who has been teaching in the field of Business Communications, heads the club at Jaipuria Noida. Dr. Raj was particularly thrilled because she got a chance to interact with students outside of class in a “creative and purposeful manner.”

Dr. Raj has big dreams for the MRC; she hopes that big names like NDTV, HT, etc. will increase their coverage of Jaipuria thanks to such an initiative.  After all, the club is also a platform for students to interact with prominent industry leaders. And the way it’s going, Dr. Raj’s goals look like a distinct possibility.
