Director General Dr. Pankaj Gupta Interacts with PGDM Batch of 2012-14

The new Director General of Jaipuria Group of Institutes, Dr.Pankaj Gupta, was on a one-day visit to the Indore campus. After a detailed interaction with the faculty members, he also made time to address the PGDM batch of 2012-14.

After welcoming all the students, he started off on a thoughtful note by asking the most elementary question of whether the students had thought about why they were doing an MBA in the first place. He said that in his career, he had come across many students who had just got into doing an MBA because of peer or parental pressure.

He emphasised the fact that even though everyone has different potential, most of us are bound down by our own beliefs. He said that we ourselves create many glass ceilings in our lives and that all limitations are in our own minds. That was the reason he had started with this question – he felt that we needed to have clarity about our goals and purpose in life, and to be self aware.
He went on to say that these were two valuable years of our lives which, if spent in the right way, would take us miles ahead in our professional careers. But to do that, it was very important to assess ourselves and the management roles which we would fit into, as a mismatch in choosing careers could greatly affect our productivity at work.

Giving valuable inputs, he suggested self-evaluation methods like Thomas Profiling for assessing ourselves and the organisational roles in which we would make best use of our skills. He also said that we needed to have clarity in our expectations from the institutions we joined.

To illustrate his point, he went on to give examples of his former students who were now well placed in companies like McKinsey and Britannia, and how they had dreamed of reaching these organisations. He said that they had made their dreams come true though sheer hard work and determination. He added that if they could, then there was no reason why we couldn’t; it was all about putting in the effort and believing in ourselves.

The new Director General certainly gave his enthralled audience something to think about. After taking a few questions from the students, he finally concluded by saying that we were responsible for our own success and that it was all about preparing for the big future which lies ahead and creating our own destiny .

Lav Mohan Chaudharay believes that doing a PGDM from a renowned B-school like Jaipuria Institute of Management makes a person completely recession-proof. Lav, who will shortly be joining Berger Paints at Kolkata as a Management Trainee, will graduate to the post of Sales Manager after a three months training period.

“In the current economic scenario, where it is very difficult to get a placement from any other B-school, the number of companies recruiting from Jaipuria Institute of Management is on the rise. Not only are we being offered good packages, most of us are getting very interesting job profiles as well.”

Lav Mohan believes that Jaipuria Lucknow gave him the exposure and tools to transform himself; and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

“Two years ago,I knew that I needed to improve. But Jaipuria has done wonders for my self-esteem. I think it gives you the double edge of a business school and finishing school rolled into one.”

Lav Mohan feels that after the rigorous preparation at Jaipuria Lucknow, the actual placement journey turned out to be quite smooth.

“For me, it was a great moment when my name was shortlisted – along with 22 others – by Berger Paints for their placement procedure. From the day I was shortlisted for Berger Paints, my professors and mentors at Jaipuria Lucknow began coaching me according to the interview pattern of Berger Paints. This helped me break into the final shortlist of 14 students from Jaipuria Lucknow. After the Aptitude Test, there were only 8 of us from Jaipuria who were selected for the next round scheduled at New Delhi, where we would be competing against students from other B-schools.”

Lav Mohan recalls how there were 82 shortlisted students from 20 other B schools from all over India for this prized placement with Berger Paints. The first round was a Group Discussion.

“It was an ‘elimination round’, but I knew that all I had to do was stay cool and stick to what had been taught to me through hours and hours of mock GD sessions at Jaipuria Lucknow. Forty students were eliminated after this round; I was not one of them.The next challenge was to get my name into the top 20 aspirants. This would be decided based on a Personal Interview. The PI round was quite challenging, with a panel of sixmembers – consisting of the Vice-President (HR) and other top managers of the Berger Paints – grilling us individually during the process. There were various questions based on my CV; the trick was not to get shaken by the interviewers, and focus on what they were looking for. Once I broke into the top 20, I knew I could do go all the way.The final challenge was an interview with the ManagingDirector – Berger Paints, in the presence of the Head of HR and the Marketing Head. I was askedquestions based on my CV, as well as domain-specific questions on Marketing and Consumer Behaviour. I had been thoroughly groomed by my mentors at Jaipuria to bring in, as often as possible, the learning from my SIP during this interview.”

Understandably, ever since his confirmation forBerger Paints, Lav Mohan Chaudhary is on cloud nine. Infact, his family and friends are still celebrating this fantastic achievement.

“Many would think that getting through Berger Paints is probably my finest moment. I don’t think so. My finest moment came when I got through Jaipuria Institute of Management,Lucknow. All good things have begun to happen to me after that.”

For Tania Lal, joining Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore, was an easy decision. Since Tania comes from a family that manages a Teachers Training Centre and a Pre-primary school, her parents are quite clued in about the management institutes that have the best RoI (Return on Investment).

“I’ve always been intrigued by the complexities of human behavior. It was this fascination that made me opt for Psychology as one of the subjects during my intermediate. It also was the reason why I chose HR Management as a specialisation for my BBA from Acropolis Institute of Management Studies. I am carrying this forward, and hope to pass out as an HR Specialist from Jaipuria Institute of Management.”

Interestingly, Indore is Tania’s hometown and yet her entire family was in consensus on her going to Jaipuria Indore, where being a residential student is mandatory.

“Grooming, personality development and exposure to the corporate world are all-important factors during post graduation. No other management institute measures up to Jaipuria Indore in this entire region.”

Halfway into her first year, Tania sums up her journey at Jaipuria Indore in just one word – tremendous. Tania has been involved in as many activities on campus as she could possibly manage. She is part of the HR club and the MRC (Media Relations club) of Jaipuria Indore. Recently, she was also a member of the organising team for the 2-day Jai Utsav. It was a great opportunity for her to learn the intricacies involved in organising an event. Through the Jai Utsav, Tania met many prominent personalities from industry and talented participants from other institutes.

“From the Business Plan competition to Chau (the regional version of Kabaddi),Jaipuria Indore has been a complete fun-while-you-learn place! Jaipuria Institute of Management has helped me overcome quite a few of my inhibitions. One such hitch was dancing. This was effectively dealt with when I was given the task of giving a dance performance and that, too, onstage in a packed auditorium! It made me realise that dancing could actually be so much fun. This was a great confidence booster.”

Tania points out that since Jaipuria Indore is a fully residential B-school, the faculty plays a far greater role than their counterparts in B-schools that allow day-scholars.

“They are so approachable that we are more like a family now. Our faculty members at Jaipuria are a source of inspiration and admiration.”

Currently, Tania is deeply engrossed in making the most of these two years at Jaipuria Institute of Management. She believes that the experience of being at Jaipuria Indore is good enough to prepare her for a much larger role in the corporate world, or as an entrepreneur.

My best moment so far has been winning the skit competition in encore 3, the annual festival of Jaipuria Indore. We got a standing ovation from the audience and the judges.”

Jipson Joseph is a management student of the 2012-14 batch of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore. According to Jipson, it was the ‘feel-good factor’ that made him decide on Jaipuria Indore as his choice of B-school.

“I was already aware of ‘Brand Jaipuria’ while doing my graduation. Before joining Jaipuria Indore, I visited the campus, and the highly qualified faculty and staff impressed me. The completely digital campus was also a major reason why I finally decided on Jaipuria Indore.”

A native Keralite, Jipson is born and brought up in Jabalpur. He completed his intermediate from St. Aloysius School and did his B.Com in 2012 from St. Aloysius College, Jabalpur. Jipson loves music, and is blessed with a beautiful voice as well. He is also fond of reading, and has just finished reading Winners Never Cheat (John Huntsman) and has begun The Fifth Discipline (Peter Senge).

Jipson is involved in a lot of co-curricular activities at Jaipuria Indore. He is part of the Media Relations Club and as an NEN E-leader, Jipson was actively involved in organising the first E-week (Entrepreneurship Week) at Jaipuria Indore. As the HR Club coordinator, he was one of the organisers of the ‘Thinking Out of the Box’ workshop. Jipson recently helped organise a fun event, the Chaao competition, which is a game similar to Kabaddi.

“I try to be part of everything that’s happening at Jaipuria Indore, whether inside the campus or outside. There’s a lot to learn from these opportunities. Jipson says that seniors at Jaipuria are “mentors and guides”, and feels that there is no senior-junior gap at all. He describes the faculty at Jaipuria Indore as learned, energetic, motivational and always eager to help a student who is willing to learn.

“I am very happy with the exposure that I’ve received in the last nine months at Jaipuria Indore. I am sure this is only the beginning and there are many more interesting things ahead. Being part of the strong Jaipuria network, I am confident that all aspects of my career are well taken care of.”

Jipson believes in the saying, ‘Do your best, and leave the rest to God’. After his two years at Jaipuria Indore, Jipson would like to build a career as an HR specialist.

“It takes a lot to get through a premium B-school like Jaipuria Institute of Management.So pay heed to the grooming and get organised into better individuals,” advises Prof. Abdul Qadir, Dept. of HR, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida.

After eight years in industry working as an HR professional, Professor Abdul Qadir moved on to become a teacher of HR in May 2009. A faculty member at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida ever since, Professor Qadir feels that his shift into academia has been the best decision he has ever made.

“The journey at Jaipuria has been quite promising. Infact, the learning has been mutual. While I’ve been able to bring in the industry perspective and practical usage to the HR classes at Jaipuria Noida, the management at Jaipuria has certainly helped me sharpen my teaching techniques. Apart from the regular workshops for Jaipuria faculty involving teaching through Cases and Case Writing, I’ve had the opportunity to attend the Case Writing workshop by Prof. Ariff Kachra from Richard Ivy School of Business (University of Western Ontario, Canada) held at ISB, Hyderabad. Workshops on Business Ethics, and Business Models & Business Plans, conducted by National Entrepreneur Network (NEN), have also been of great use in my development as an academician.”

Prof. Qadir believes that when it comes to Management, the teaching philosophy has to revolve around bridging the gap between classroom learning and the industry workstation.

“Faculty members at Jaipuria Institute of Management ensure that apart from organising seminars and workshops, atleast two sessions in each course are dedicated to guest lectures from industry experts. Not only does this help confirm the classroom teaching, it provides the young managers of tomorrow with the latest updates and know-how straight from the industry.”

Having specialised in Human Resource Management Systems while part of the corporate world, Professor Qadir does a lot of research work in this field, as well as in the field of Psychometrics. His earlier published works include topics such as‘High attrition rate: A big challenge for BPO firms’ (published in ToI’s Ascent as well as in the October 2005 edition of CSR), ‘Brilliant leader’ (Vision, Jan – June 2010) and ‘The art of feedback: An interpersonal transaction’ (NSB Management Review). He is currently researching topics like‘Six Ts of Effective Performance Management System’, ‘Resolving Conflicts’ and ‘Resistance to Change’.

“In fact, Psychometrics – along with literature on leadership and motivation – is also favourite pastime reading for me. Being with my student mentee group also keeps me occupied beyond the classroom hours at Jaipuria Noida. I do write a bit ofUrdu poetry as well, quickly jotting down random thoughts that I like to weave into a sher at my own leisure.”

It is probably his ability to understand and write Urdu poetry that makes him a highly involved In-charge of the Dramatics Club of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. Professor Qadiri’s the coordinator for all MDPs and training programmes for Jaipuria Noida, and has conducted training programmes for Transport Corporation of India Ltd. (TCIL), Gurgaon and National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Anand (Gujarat). He has also held open and customised MDPs for managers and executives of organisations like Coromandel International Ltd., KRIBHCO, Tata Chemicals and National Fertilizers Ltd. He is also working on a consultancy project for the Ministry of Science & Technology.

“From the perspective of an academician with close linkages to the corporate world, I see that the times ahead are going to be far more taxing and demanding; I alwaysadvise my students to be mindful of this. Priyanka Priya is the star of her batch at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. Endowed with exceptional communication skills, Priyanka has been a part of almost every event that has been organised at Jaipuria Noida.

“Jaipuria Institute of Management provides so many opportunities for extracurricular activities and triggers new interests in us. I never miss an opportunity to be a part of a debate. I was also a committee member in events like Spardha – the annual sports event – and Udaan. Managing these events has made me more responsible. I like the way Jaipuria Institute of Management works overtime to make every event that it is associated with a thumping success. Being a part of the literary club fest ‘Words Worth’ was also a wonderful experience. But my most memorable moment came when I won the collage making competition. Of course, it is a matter of pride to be a campus journalist on the elite Jaipuria MRC (Media Relations Club) Team. I enjoy contributing with editorial inputs across various media that Jaipuria Institute of Management has, such as blogs and the website.”

Priyanka Priya comes from the ‘steel capital’ of India, Jamshedpur. After her intermediate from Jamshedpur Public School, Priyanka was selected for a BBM from one of the famed institutions of Bangalore, M S Ramaiah College.

“After a BBM from M S Ramaiah College, I had appeared for entrance tests to various management institutes. While I had fairly good options, I wanted to move closer to my home-town. I had heard a lot of praise for Jaipuria Institute of Management from my friends in Delhi. It was, in fact, this ‘word of mouth’ appraisal that helped me choose Jaipuria Noida as my management college.”

Priyanka is quite popular among her colleagues at Jaipuria Noida, especially because of her football skills! During breaks, when not kicking a ball around, she is often seen deeply engrossed in some novel or the other.

“Jaipuria Noida gives its students a lot of freedom. The faculty is awesome, interactive and go out of their way to help us. I have never felt any sense of hesitation in approaching them, even with a silly question. We have one mentor per study group, who helps us improve upon our weaknesses through various activity-based exercises.”

Priyanka is targeting the profile of an assistant manager in the private banking sector on passing out of Jaipuria Noida. She is confident that the effective and innovative learnings at Jaipuria Institute of Management will translate into a good placement, and ultimately a great career in the corporate world.

“The final interview was held after a gap of more than a month, on 1st of feb 2013. This gave me valuable preparatory time with the faculty and the placement cell.”

Sumit Ranjan Barik had just one stated expectation from Jaipuria Institute of Management. At the time he joined the institute a couple of years ago, he had informed his interviewers that he wanted to start his career with a ‘No. 1 brand’. Jaipuria Institute of Management found that Sumit could be groomed into an excellent manager, and decided to take on this challenge of grooming and placing him with a ‘No. 1 Brand’.

“The placement season in Jaipuria Institute of Management picked up pace in November. It was exciting, challenging and also quite hectic, as many of my colleagues were getting placed gradually with some company or the other. Very soon, one of my target companies arrived on-campus. Asian Paints, as we know, is No.1 in its industry. It was time to test my abilities and Jaipuria’s grooming against the toughest competition.”

Asian Paints typically goes through a 4-round process –Aptitude Test, followed by a Group Discussion, an HR Interview and the Final Interview. In Sumit’s case, a pool of 70 students from five different management institutes were tested in a bid to shortlist the right fit for the job. Demonstratingthe tough standards that Asian Paints sets, by the time the HR interview was concluded, there were just eight people shortlisted for the final interview.

“The final interview was held after a gap of more than a month, on 1st of February, 2013.This gave me valuable preparatory time with the faculty and the Placement Cell. This interview was at at the main office of Asian Paints in New Delhi.As luck would have it, I was the first interviewee. The interview started off well, and I gave a brief introduction to myself, but very soon I was bombarded with questions. There were the general questions about one’s strength, weakness, why I chose Sales, three qualities of a good salesperson, difficult situations that I’d overcome in life, etc. But in-between, they also tested me on my grasp of theory, like the question on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. In the later part, the focus was more on problem-solving through situation-based questions related to dealership.”

When the results finally came out, celebrations broke out at the Jaipuria Institute of Management. Sumit had made it!

“It’s a wonderful feeling when you are the only one who gets selected out of a tough competitive crowd. This is a dream start to any career. A brand like Asian Paints is a golden opportunity. The faculty and Placement cell have helped me with every possible information and support throughout. It is at Jaipuria Institute of Management that I realised that the best way to learn in life is ‘learning by doing’. This is the only way you have fun and view the practical aspect of things at the same time.”

While Sumit’s family members and friends back home in Kendujhar (Orissa) are celebrating his success, Sumit is busy getting a grip on what lies ahead in his new role as Sales Officer, Asian Paints.

“I will be meeting dealers, representatives of institutions, painters, building contractors, interior decorators and architects. I will be expected to explain the Company’s promotional schemes with respect to a product or group of products, as well as collect information about competitors’ sales and promotion schemes. Conducting retail audits to assess market potential, and estimating the sale of competitors’ products with a view to adopting suitable strategies for sale will also be within the purview of my job. The best part is that quite a few faculty members at Jaipuria Institute of Management come from a corporate background, and Marketing at that. I am trying to draw out as much practical, hands-on knowledge from them as I can. This will help me get ahead from the word go.”

Sumit Ranjan Barik advises his juniors at Jaipuria Institute of Management to maintain a positive attitude, smiling face, presence of mind and – if possible – a sense of humour, right through the placement process.

Jitendra Mundhra completed his B.com from Maharaja Ganga Singh University, Bikaner. A meritorious student who won the CBSE scholarship, he is also a national level hockey player. He belongs to a business family of Rajasthan and his father has the Distributorship of HUL, along with a grain business. Jitendra always aspired to live a corporate life and wanted to pursue a degree in management from one the best institutes in the country. Looking back now, he says, “I chose Jaipuria because not only is it a management college, it’s a brand built on 15 years of trust.”

EQ or IQ – Dr. J. P Upadhyay, Director – Japruia Indore, engages the students on one of the most important management debates

Jaipuria Indore students had an enriching session on 23rd of February with the Director,Dr.J. P.Upadhyay,on the MBTI model and importance of Emotional Quotient(EQ). Dr Upadhyay started off with describing MBTI as a self awareness tool and how it helps managers to become more aware of their personlaity type and EQ level.
Creating a context for the model, he explained how longitudinal research from Harvard Business School (arguably the best B- School in the world today) indicated that some of the students with even the best IQ levels did very well initially, but some of them slipped off the track and lost momentum within 10 years. The research clearly indicated through this example, that a high IQ level was not a predictor of sustained growth in life. On the other hand, some of the students from Harvard were growing exceptionally well and living a balanced life. The psychological profiling (MBTI) of both these groups of students indicated that what separated themwas the Emotional Quotient.
Dr.Upadhyay went on to say that even though many Western countries were developed, many people there were still on the quest for happiness, while others from poorer countries were happier with their lives. Once again, the difference between these people boiled down to the EQ.
He then expanded his talk and laid emphasis on the importance of controlling ouremotions; unless we do that, emotions could quickly take control of us. This he said was important as students will soon be starting their professional journey and will be required to manage different relationships – be it reporting to superiors or managing large teams or even dealing with customers and suppliers.
He then went on to explain the model, which consisted of the following elements:

Self management- Relationship Management

He concluded by circulating an MBTI questionnaire,which students filled, and then helped them to track their personality types using their responses to the questions. This will be a start of the series of sessions that the students will undergo as they get to learn more about their EQ level and how they can improve by becoming more aware.
