“Innovative teaching methods at Jaipuria have made learning fun for me”, shares Geetika Goyal

Geetika Goyal has set her sights on being an entrepreneur and her approach is smart and strategic. Not only is she training herself at one of the best management colleges in the country – Jaipuria – but she is also planning to work in the finance department of an MNC to garner the required experience before she walks out on her own in the world of business. She explains, “Even though a management college like Jaipuria does integrate a lot of management qualities in us, working in an organisation is an altogether different experience. I want to gain some management experience in a multinational company before I begin my own work”.

Born and brought up in the city of Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, Geetika feels privileged to have stayed in a boarding school up to the tenth grade. Thereafter, she took admission in D.P.S Vasant Kunj, Delhi, where she completed her school education. She did her Bachelor of Engineering after that and bagged a campus placement with Wipro. She worked with them for a year, during which she decided to pursue an MBA. “My work at a multinational company made me realise the importance of a management degree and that’s when I joined Jaipuria Institute of Management”. She credits the world class infrastructure, faculty profile and academic culture with her decision to join Jaipuria.

Geetika is an active girl and interested in badminton, swimming, reading novels, going to the gym and dancing. She is a fitness enthusiast and the facilities at Jaipuria – like the gymnasium and sports clubs – impressed her. She is also an active participant in college activities, her favourite being the role of campus journalist with MRC, the Jaipuria media club. “I enjoy being a part of MRC the most because it gives me the authority to personally interview all those speakers and entrepreneurs who come to our college for presentations and guest lectures.” She completely enjoys covering the events on the campus and reporting them. She is also the coordinator of E-cell, the entrepreneurship club.

Hands-on teaching and innovative teaching methods are the two things that have worked very well for Geetika in Jaipuria. “I have received my education from a lot of institutes in different parts of the country, but the faculty at Jaipuria Institute of Management is incomparable. The teachers use aids like white boards, projectors, videos, power point presentations, role plays, etc., to help each student understand the concepts being discussed.” She also thinks that the faculty at Jaipuria is easily accessible and that makes education not only fun, but also easy for her. She has built several skills, including public speaking, at the institute and is confident that going forward, she will be able to get a placement as per her caliber.

E-week gets off to a thumping start at Jaipuria Noida

Amidst the fun and learning, ‘Women’s Safety’ acquires central focus

Despite it being a Saturday, Noida woke up early on the 9th of February 2013. The satellite city of New Delhi reverberated with the insistent, collective voices of the youth of Jaipuria Institute of Management chanting, “We want safety; we want pride”. The management students of Jaipuria were taking part in the ‘Grand Marathon’ of the much-awaited ‘Entrepreneurship Week’. The E Week of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida had begun… and with a bang!

“We organised a massive signature campaign at TOT Mall, Sector 62, Noida, on the 2nd day of E-Week, the 10th of February. But that was not all,” said Sonal Saxena, the coordinator of the event. “We gave the Grand Marathon event a ‘women’s safety’ theme as well; it became an extension of our ‘safety for women’ signature campaign. The marathon started with the pledge of E-week initiated by the E-leader, Ms. Akanksha also a student. Students holding banners and chanting slogans spread the message around Sec-62 to make everybody aware that Jaipurians stand for women’s safety. A healthy number of employees from the National Institute of Chartered Accountants also took part in supporting Jaipuria Noida’s message.”

The events so far have been a mix of fun and learning, but social activism – especially women’s safety – has clearly been prominent this year in this annual extravaganza organised in collaboration with National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN). With the first three days dedicated to ‘E-Arena’ – which focuses on innovations in sports – and CSR, this event has already seen a lot of activities…. and it’s still only half-way through.

Championships events have been conducted so far in Computer Gaming (Counter Strike – Fire in the Hole), Aerobics, Women’s Cricket, Kho-Kho, Sports Quiz and Kite Flying as well! Woven within all this fun was an amazing interaction with one of the best-known sports managers in the country, Mr. H.P. Singh Rishi, Deputy Director General, Organizing Committee Commonwealth Games, Delhi 2010. Mr. Rishi spoke with urgent necessity for the need to clean up sports management. Recently in the news for his book, Sports Scare – The Ghost That Haunted Commonwealth Games Delhi, Mr. Rishi enlightened the students on how the noble concept of sport had been brutally assassinated under the guise of Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010.

“The interaction with Mr. Rishi was extremely depressing and motivating at the same time,” remarked Anuvriti Singh of Jaipuria Institute of Management. “He exhorted us to look very seriously at avenues in Sports Management, as the domain needed fresh young managers to run things in an organised manner.”

Traditionally, one of the most anticipated activities in ‘E-Week’ is the film screening and appreciation event. Last year, this event saw management lessons in the movie ‘Real Steel’. This year, ‘Goon’ a 2011 comedy directed by Michael Dowse, starring Seann William Scott and Liev Schreiber, made the cut at E-week. The main plot of the movie depicted an exceedingly nice but somewhat dim-witted man who becomes the enforcer for a minor league ice hockey team. The movie goes on to show how the protagonist brings the wisdom of his domain (he is a ‘Bouncer’ at a bar!) to turn around the fortunes of the ice hockey team.

“That’s why the opening day of E-week is always great fun!” exclaimed a smiling Rohit Sharma, who coordinated this event. “Students began rolling in at 11:45 am, and the movie began at 12:15pm. It was nice to have Professor Moid Uddin Ahmad to explain how the movie, in its essence, dealt with the finer points of management.”

Easily the most ‘green’ event of Day 2 (10th of February) of the ‘E-week’ was the Tree Plantation initiative. Students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida worked in groups of five towards a greener landscape, starting within Jaipuria Noida campus itself.

“The students of Jaipuria Noida worked in coordination with a few teams from the neighbouring ABES Engineering College as well,” explained Deepali Srivastav, the student coordinator for this event. “It was a great event and attracted many students as well as onlookers, who joined us on the spot.”

E Week is held across the country, building support for entrepreneurs while encouraging them to launch start-ups. Jaipuria is one of the central institutions for the E-week. And going by the thumb rule that ‘a job well begun is half done’, E-week this year is all set to be a thumping success at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida.

Certificate distribution at Dantli village- by Nikita Thomas PGDM 2012-14

It was a moment of great pride and joy for Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur when it completed the first leg of the Dantli project, which was undertaken under Parivartan, the CSR initiative of the institute. Under this initiative, the institute provided a 30hours capsule course in basic computer and English to the not-so-privileged students of Dantli village free of cost. Dantli is a village near Jaipur, whose residents were identified as lacking these skills. Many a time, this short-coming was a big hindrance in their studies and job opportunities.

The Certificate Distribution ceremony was held on 26th January 2013 in front of the village Panchayat and officials. Few eminent villagers involved with the project were honoured as well. Certificates were given to motivate the students, who spoke about their experience of being a part of the institute. The students of Jaipuria Institute of Management – Prachi Jaiswal, Preeti Singh, Nikita Thomas, Utkarsh Jaiswal and Vedant Vashishta – who were involved in teaching English in Dantli, were also given mementos as a token of appreciation for their contribution. In a speech given by Preeti Singh, she said “ It was great being a part of the Dantli team; we not only taught them but also learned so many new things from them”. Utkarsh Jaiswal also said, “Being a part of the Dantli team, I discovered that I could also teach somebody, something that I didn’t know about myself earlier.”

All this was possible only because of the vision and initiative of our director, Dr. Rajiv R. Thakur, without whom the whole project wouldn’t have got off the ground. His vision is not only restricted to Dantli village; Taking this project further Jaipuria Jaipur is looking forward to adopting another village near Jaipur. The faculty members involved in this project were Prof. S. P. Garg, Dr. Swati Soni and Dr. Sheenu Jain, who constantly guided us through the project. Mr. Prakash Sharma from the Library has also been the backbone of this project, coordinating between the villagers and students, and organising most of the activities. Other staff members who have played a significant role are Mohd. Sohail, Mr. Raj Prakash Singh, Mr. Hemant and others. Henceforth, Mr. Devesh will be coordinating future projects. The members of the village Panchayat also praised us for our contribution and requested the Director to continue with the project at Dantli and extend the learning process.

Engaging with industry experts to look into the future of the Automobile industry

As a part of its formidable industry immersion culture, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore invited one of Indore’s most prominent businessmen of the Automobile sector. Mr. Ashutosh Mishra, President of Sanghi Motors, visited Jaipuria Indore on the 2nd of February 2013, for an interaction with the students. Mr. Mishra is one of the most respected names in the automobile consumer dealership space, having held prominent positions with companies like Hyundai, Maruti and, as of now, with Tata Motors. In his interaction with the students of Jaipuria Indore, Mr. Mishra provided a detailed overview of the automobile industry in India.

“Automobiles set our pulse racing; they attract a lot of young minds. The history of the Indian automobile industry dates back to 1897 and today, India is the ninth largest automobile industry in the world. And guess what? The low levels of vehicle penetration in India still provide immense opportunities in our automobile industry, making it one of the top three lucrative markets in the world for automobile giants. Companies like Nissan and General Motors have created blueprints for the export of 5 Lakh cars that will be manufactured in India, with an expected investment of over 30,000 crores.”

During the hour-long interaction, Mr. Mishra classified the automobile industry into various segments, and shared some important features about the marketing of automobiles, including pricing as the major contributor to branding and sales.

“Innovation might be new to most sectors, but not automobiles. Ever since it began, automobile companies have either grown big or perished, depending on their innovation quotient. The health of the commercial vehicle sector is an indicator of the health of the economy of a country. Apart from the Asian economies, sales in the automobile industry across the globe have stagnated. The major threat in the automobile industry is the global crisis, and that is why Asia is quickly turning into a battle-ground for automobile giants.”

Mr. Ashutosh Mishra dwelt in great detail on the growth drivers of the automobile industry, such as the development of navigable infrastructure (roads and highways), the critical factor of growth in the middle-class segment of an economy, increased investments by global players, and vehicle and components export.

“Can you believe where the next big thrust of car manufacturers in India is? Maruti Udyog is going ahead full throttle with a 6500 crore investment in the second-hand car segment, Hyundai is pumping in more than 3800 crores and Tata motors is investing 2000 crores in the small car segment. While passenger car markets will always have growth potential, the commercial vehicle segment has also shown great recovery, especially in India, after withstanding the effects of the global financial crisis.”

He advised the management students of Jaipuria Indore to continuously gauge the technological environment of the automobile industry.

“Opportunities for the automobile industry lie in tapping into the ever growing consumer demands and, undoubtedly, alternate fuel sources.Trends like fuel efficient cars, NVH isolation, lower CO2 emissions and the growth of a niche market in tier-2 cities hold a lot of promise in the future. The weakness in the industry is not about the buying power, but revolves majorly around the lack of proper infrastructure and not much improvement in the after-sales services.”

Mr. Ashutosh Mishra’s interaction was rich in cases and examples. In fact, he even concluded his session with a small caselet on the Tata Nano, leading to an energetic discussion among students on how it could be converted into a success.

There were several first-time donors like Ankit Chaurasia, PGDM Class of 2014, who shared his experience saying, “I was initially a bit skeptical about donating blood. But seeing the response of my fellow students, I realised this was my best chance to start contributing to a larger cause and I made up my mind to donate. I feel really proud of myself and will be a regular blood donor.” There were regular donors in the student body who encouraged the first-timers. Vasundhara Bharadwaj, PGDM Class of 2013, said, “I’ve been donating blood since my junior college days. It’s healthy, fun and most of all, makes you feel very good. It’s just a needle prick, and after that, it’s all simple”.

Citing the statistics about the need for blood in India, the doctors from M Y Hospital said, “There is need for ten million units of blood, whereas we have only five million units. Every drop counts.”

Dr. Upadhyay closed the camp by saying, “We thank our donors for their participation and will continue to associate ourselves with such initiatives in the near future. This is in extension to our CSR initiative for the nearby villages, Ugam and Dayitva. Perhaps the next camp will include the nearby villages and we can incorporate further health tips for the villagers as well. This is just the start; we hope to do better for society and our students, always.”

Mr. Anurag Sharma, deputy general manager of Reebok, shares tips on the retail sector with students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida

In its constant attempts to align its students to emerging industries, Jaipuria Noida recently brought in one of the most widely experienced professionals of the Retail industry, Mr. Anurag Sharma, to interact with its students. Mr. Sharma, who is currently Deputy General Manager with Reebok (India), which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the $4 billion Reebok International – has more than 13 years of experience in the Retail industry. With a series of case studies based on his experiences, Mr. Anurag Sharma elaborated on what innovations mean in the retail industry.

“I’ve been with Reebok for nearly 11 years now, starting out as an Assistant Product Manager for Greg Norman (Golfing Brand), moving onto Product Manager for Rockport, and finally ending up with my current profile. I can assure you that with the kind of competition that we’ve seen in these times, we would not have survived had we not innovated. Even merging into the Adidas Group was a sort of commercial innovation, in keeping with the times.”

A product of National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, Mr. Sharma emphasised that the current era of uncertainty is basically an opportunity for management graduates, like his audience at Jaipuria Noida, to look deep within themselves and follow their hearts.

“After passing out of NIFT in 1998, I started out with ITC, shifting within a year to Arvind Brands, handling Operations for the denim brand, Lee. Right through school in Lucknow and college as well, I’ve always been an athlete. This is why I was looking out for an opportunity to work with a fitness brand, which happened in 2001 in the form of Reebok.”

Given his fit and toned physique, nobody at Jaipuria Noida was surprised when he told them that he was a regular at the Reebok gym, and has run the Delhi Half Marathon fives times in a row.

“It is nice to see budding young retailers at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, full of enthusiasm and inquisitive about the nuances of retail. With the FDI in single brand retail opening up, new players will very quickly be entering the Indian space. The laws are not very strict or defined in this sector as yet, so you will have to choose your best bet after a lot of study. Stay focused and keep the big picture in mind while you work towards your dream. And please read retail journals regularly; because if you miss, somebody else will hit! You always need to be on your toes to constantly deliver.”

Having travelled extensively across the U.S., Europe and the Far East, Mr. Anurag Sharma brought a much-needed global perspective on the Retail industry to his address to the students of Jaipuria Noida.

“Retail was at a nascent stage in India in the late nineties, but those of us who were well clued in on the Indian and global fronts, knew very well that it had a long positive road ahead. As management students, you should be able to read the opportunities that markets provide you, especially the ones that are yet to boom. ‘Get in early, and grow quickly’ – that should be your mantra.”

The interaction with Mr. Anurag Sharma, DGM, Reebok (India), is part of the sustained industry immersion programme that management students of Jaipuria Noida are exposed to round the year.

The theme of the conference was “Demystifying the Indian Consumer”.

The Guest of Honor of the much awaited conference was Mr. K.T.S. Tulsi, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India. He is known for his tireless efforts in getting justice for the Uphaar Tragedy victims. Welcoming the distinguished guests, Dr. J.D. Singh, Director General, Jaipuria Institutes of Management talked about the drivers of change of consumer behavior being income level, gen next, urbanization and consumption style and how updation and innovation is going to help the Indian marketer in present context.

Mr. K.T.S. Tulsi started by emphasizing that no amount of FDI can bring prosperity unless we strengthen the criminal justice system of the country. According to him, law should be simple yet succinct. He noted that the delay in meting out justice has led to crime becoming a “low risk, high return business”. According to him, the fact that only 27% of all filed cases actually go to trial, has led to corruption galloping and entering all fields, from top to bottom. He said that India should use its technological competence to drive out the old bullock-cart system still haunting its judiciary.

In his inaugural speech Hon’ble Mr. Razi talked about the challenges ahead of the Indian marketer owing to the diverse culture and the changing patterns of purchase decisions. He said that though India lags behind China in various fields including education, the change can be brought about by addressing it positively. He called upon the youth and elderly of the country to be equally adaptive to advancement in technology so that any generation gap could be minimized.

The conference which comprised of four sessions “Trends Shaping and Changing Market Dynamics”, Blending modern sophistication of urban with the traditional rural markets”, “ Gearing services sector for the new millennium “ and “ Manging products, people, processes and public relations.

He concluded by saying that his company has been constantly working towards it.

Dr. Kamal Ghose, Director, Symbiosis Institute of Management, Bangalore focused his discussion on how to “Enhance the service brand for the Indian consumer”. He talked about how brands can bring about change keeping in mind the distinctive customer experience that they need to deliver.

Dr. J.D. Singh concluded the session by saying that in Indian context, fostering emotional relationship with the consumer is important since 95% of the decisions of Indian consumers are emotional rather than rational. According to him, e-commerce can be translated into easy commerce if used intelligently.

The second technical session was dedicated to “Trends shaping and changing the market dynamics “. Beginning the session, Mr. Nikhil Sharma, Partner, MART, India pointed out that there is huge opportunity in rural markets of India but there are certain factors that marketers need to keep in mind in order to tap those markets. Distribution and pricing are as important as is understanding of the fact that rural population is not as homogenous as it appears at the superficial level and in a few years’ time, their household spending will equal today’s urban levels. According to him, local customization, innovative technologies as HUL’s Project Shakti and below the line media activities will collectively contribute towards effective rural market expansion.

According to Mr. Sandeep Mathur, Senior VP, DCM Sriram Consolidated Ltd., the major problem is of incorrect interpretation of customer requirements. To support this observation, he cited examples of Bajaj Scooters which discontinued production of scooters terming it obsolete, not able to foresee the surge in scooter market which took place later on. He said that positioning for each market needs to be done differently. He emphasized the importance of “Luxury Segment” as SEC-A household is growing in India.

Mr. Naveen Luthra, VP, Strategic Alliances, GETIT Infoservices Pvt. Ltd. discussed role of directional media in marketing communication. He explained how in creative media, focus is on creativity and the sellers seek buyers whereas in directional media focus is on information.

He further elaborated on how India and China have been able to sail through in the high tide of 2008 recession. According to him while FDI has been a major contributor to China’s success, for India, its rising exports have played a major role.

The talk was carried forward by Mr. P.K. Anand, Executive Director, Punjab & Sind Bank when he took the stage to talk about “Challenges in HR and Marketing in Banking sector”. He spoke about how it is important with the changing market dynamics to blend technology with the “Generation C” who will be more demanding in the future. For this generation, “Banking is necessary but Bank is not”.

The session was then continued by Mr. Bhupesh Dinger, Director, Enrich Salons and Academy, featured as a Top Young Achiever in Business India, who mentioned that the present day consumer i
s an omni-channel user who is looking for options. He closed by saying that effective mix of online and offline media and consistent customer service can together meet diverse customer expectations today.

The final talk of the session were delivered by Prof. Ram Krishna Mandan, Consultant, Lanco Infratech Ltd, who shared the statistic denoting that Indian middle class is set to grow from 50 mn to 583 mn by 2025 and to catch the pulse of such a diversified segment, adequate marketing research on part of marketers will play an important role.

The last technical session of the conference, “Managing Products, People, Processes and Public Relations” was chaired by Dr. V.V. Ratna, faculty, Strategy & General Management, JIM, Lucknow.

The first speaker of the session was Mr. Sampath Kumar, CEO, Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojna (RGMVP) who started by mentioning how his organization is working towards reducing financial disparity in Indian society which has its roots in patriarchal denomination, casteism, corruption & illiteracy. He explained the methodology employed by RGMVP wherein they promote micro savings by self-help groups which are further lent to the members in need. He informed that Rs. 202 crore has been disbursed in loan by this method.

The second speaker of the session, Mr. Rajesh Toshniwal, CEO, Toshniwal Industries struck a chord with the students by sharing experiences from his B-school days. In the same vein, he also mentioned that no B-school can teach as much as customer interaction can. He ended by saying, “Change can bring innovation” and “opportunities are aplenty, one just needs to bend a little and make the most of them”.

Mr. Prasanna Singh, COO, Banyan Netfaqs, started on a positive note by advising the students to “work on your strengths so much that your strengths can overpower your weaknesses”. He mentioned how organizations can be run successfully by cross-training the workforce instead of the entire process being centralized and being dependent on a few people. He exclaimed how the smart phone generation has access to every piece of information and can keep itself abreast of latest happenings around the globe.

Mr. Himanshu Manglik, Sr. Manager, Corporate Media Relations, Nestle India echoed the words of the previous speakers when he stressed on the fact that with economic reforms, extensive media exposure and rising disposable incomes of the people, it has become almost imminent for marketers to devise strategies based on extensive research of consumer insight and emotional quotient.
