Jaipuria Jaipur STUDENT Speaks

“I expect Jaipuria Institute of Management to train and inspire me to become a reputed entrepreneur in due course of time.”

It has been six months since Akshita Gupta joined Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, and she has loved each moment of that time. Akshita comes from a business family hailing from Jaipur itself. Akshita’s father is an LIC agent and investment consultant and she herself is a B.Com graduate. However, number crunching and commerce are not her only interests.

“I’ve become a regular part of the NukkadNatak team at Jaipuria Jaipur, and I love playing the roles that come my way. The most memorable time at Jaipuria, Jaipur was the induction programme, which I enjoyed a lot. The outbound activity too was a great experience. All in all, I simply love being a part of Jaipuria Institute of Management.”

After finishing her B.Com, Akshita appeared for the usual entrance exams for admission to B-schools. Being a bright student, she made the cut in quite a few prominent management institutions.

“Frankly speaking, I was confused between the options that I had. Also, I was not keen on stepping out of Jaipur. Had it not been for my cousin –a former student of a different management college – I would not have been able to make up my mind. My cousin helped me draw a comparison between different schools on parameters like reputation of the institute, faculty, infrastructure and facilities, and soon I realised that Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur stood head and shoulders above the rest. “

Akshita points out that the faculty members at Jaipuria Institute of Management have played a very important role in settling down the freshers into the routine. She emphasises that the faculty at Jaipuria Jaipur are not just teachers, but take on the role of ‘friends, philosophers and guides’ in mentoring students. She also speaks highly of the senior-junior culture at Jaipuria Institute of Management.

“Jaipuria has a very different senior-junior culture. At first, all of us freshers were nervous, but as we interacted more with our seniors we realised that they are extremely helpful, and informal-yet-professional in many ways. They gave us a fantastic ‘Freshers Party’. As is well known, the concept of ragging does not exist in Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur. We may be a batch apart, but we are all here to make a career, and everybody realises that. Our seniors are always there for us in sickness and to help us out on the curricular front, as well as in organising events.”

Since she comes from a business family, it is not surprising that Akshita harbours entrepreneurial ambitions after passing out of Jaipuria Institute of Management.

“My expectation from Jaipuria Institute of Management is that by the end of these 2 years, I should be capable of running an entrepreneurial set-up, and drive successful initiatives.”

Akshita Gupta is positive that Jaipuria Institute of Management will inspire and support her in becoming a reputed entrepreneur in due course of time.

“I was lucky to have a mentor like Dr. Masood Siddiqui to guide me during placements. I owe my success to my marketing teachers – Professor Himanshu Mishra, Dr. Shalini Nath Tripathi and Dr. Shubendra Parihar.”

2nd January 2013 will forever be etched in the memory of Ankit Seth as the day when Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow delivered on its final promise. It was the day when Ankit earned a coveted placement as Management Trainee at Orient Fans – a legendary brand of the iconic Birla Group.

“This year, the placement season at Jaipuria Institute of Management really took off at the end of November 2012. Recruiters from brands like Luminous Power, Finlace, Orient Fansand Polyplex Corporation Ltd. began making their presence felt. The Orient Fans selection process tested one on all fronts – aptitude, soft skills and marketing insights. The first round aptitude test reduced the field from 90 candidates to 45. This was followed by a Group Discussion, which curtailed the number of students for the primary interview round to 15. This interview was the most challenging that I have ever faced. We had to display astute selling skills and establish a rapport with the stakeholders, who kept changing in quick sessions. Since I was able to do this, I made it to the five finalists.”

The final interview round was with the top managers of the Marketing, HR & Operations departments. Ankit had to pull out all that he had learnt in his two years at Jaipuria Lucknow to get past this gruelling stage.

“Thanks to being the co-ordinator for various LIVE project, running around for sponsorships for the annual events, as well as the summer internship, I finally came good when it counted. I was lucky to have a mentor like Mr.Masood Siddiqui, who guided me during this phase and made me target-oriented. I owe this success to my Marketing teachers, Professor Himanshu Mishra, Dr. Shalini Nath Tripathi and Dr. Shubendu Parihar, who gave me theoretical insights into marketing and taught me the practical implementation too. I had a sales-oriented approach right through the interview, and this is what the top managers of Orient Fans wanted from the candidate.”

During the initial phase of his Trainee Programme at Orient Fans, Ankit will be familiarised with the diversified product segments of the company, the dynamic channel structure with the stakeholders, and the key marketing and sales strategies being adopted by the company.

“Opportunities do not come easily. So when they do, one needs to grab them with both hands. Today I realise that your placement interview is a sum total of your life, and you have to prepare yourself well for that moment. The co-ordination of a LIVE project for Big Bazaar – where I had to manage a 28-member team for the catchment study of a new prospect in Lucknow – to aggressively managing sponsorships for the annual events -all these experiences at Jaipuria helped me develop good relationships in the corporate world. Dr. Phillip Kotler’s book cannot completely teach you marketing; it’s the managerial implementation in the practical world that makes one fit to be a true marketer.”

Ankit Seth is currently waiting for intimation about his joining date at Orient Fans. In the meantime, he is spending a lot of time researching the products of his future organisation, as well as enjoying his last few months at Jaipuria Lucknow.

“The two years at Jaipuria Lucknow – the team work, combined projects, working odd hours to meet deadlines and working with a diverse set of people – actually prepared me to face the harsh advertising world.”

As Senior Manager – Business Development, Deepti Chandra Mehra is one of the driving forces behind various initiatives at the leading digital services firm of the country – Hungama Digital Entertainment Limited. She has been based at the Hungama headquarters in Gurgaon ever since making the shift from Zapak two-and-a-half years ago. Deepti has literally grown from a foot soldier to a General in the eight years since passing out of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow in 2005.

“After passing out of Jaipuria Lucknow, I grew from the ranks of a Management Trainee at Synergy Media, to handling the complete northern region – ideating, conceptualising and executing strategies and launches – for my set of clients. Quite a few of my campaigns have been rated ‘the best campaign of the year’.”

Deepti started her career in Digital Marketing, Online Ad Sales and Business Development, with the most basic and labour-intensive role – on-ground brand activation. In her first job after Jaipuria Lucknow with Synergy Media, she ideated and implemented numerous successful campaigns, including the on-ground activation of ‘Mountain Dew’ across markets in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. As Manager – Sales with Sify, between May 2007 and October 2008, Deepti Mehra was awarded as ‘The Outstanding Performer’ for selling maximum sponsorships. She was also responsible for the optimisation of Sify‘ i-ways’ by offering the captive users as targeted youth for NOKIA’s on-ground activity.

Deepti’s shift to Zapak Digital Entertainment Ltd. coincided with the boom in Digital Marketing. During her almost two year long tenure, Deepti was responsible for some very innovative campaigns; for instance, the on-ground promotion of Airtel Broadband (‘Speed on demand’ campaign). This activity included novel concepts like gaming championships in residential societies across the country. Airtel also rewarded this as the ‘Best Marketing Activity of the Year’. Deepti Mehra was also the brain behind the launch of Exide tubular batteries for invertor, which garnered high levels of participation across locations. She also led a highly engaging ground activation drive for the launch of Yahoo’s new web page.

At Hungama Digital too, the awards have been coming thick and fast, including an ‘Employee of the Year’ at Hungama, for the Videocon Mobile Services ‘Zero Paisa Campaign’; which was also adjudged the best digital campaign of the year in 2010.
“The two years at Jaipuria Lucknow – the team work, combined projects, working odd hours to meet deadlines and working with a diverse set of people – actually prepared me to face the harsh advertising world. My professional experience has been a roller-coaster ride, a dynamic graph with an uphill curve. There has always been a new opportunity and a new task, which has always given a positive result. Jaipuria Institute of Management taught me something far more valuable than the curriculum. It taught me to believe in myself and be confident about what I’m doing.”

Deepti Mehra is in touch with most of her friends from Jaipuria Lucknow through social media.

“Whenever in Lucknow, I catch up with them at get-togethers. Ofcourse, we do keep in touch through phone calls as well. I always make it a point to attend Jaipuria Institute of Management events and get-togethers, to catch up with friends.”

Deepti believes that she is quickly reaching a point where her journey and learnings as a professional will translate into entrepreneurship.Over the next five years, she will beworking towards setting up her own E-commerce portal.

“In these times of tough competition, there will always be people eyeing opportunities to pull you down,” Deepti reminds her juniors at Jaipuria Institute of Management. “There will be many who will try to make you weak emotionally so that you crumble. Do not give in to the work pressure. Believe in yourself and strive towards your goals.”

The sentiment of ‘giving back to the country’ dominates republic day celebrations at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore

Jaipuria family celebrated India’s 64th Republic Day on The 26th of January 2013 at Jaipuria Indore with characteristic enthusiasm.

The tricolour was unfurled by Dr. J. P. Upadhyay, Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore, on the college campus and the entire congregation of students, staff, faculty and management sang the national anthem in unison. Sweets were distributed amidst joyous fervour. To mark its commitment to society and the future of the country, Jaipuria institute invited the children of the Dakachiya village as special guests for the occasion.

As the day progressed, both the old and young of Jaipuria family shared their vision for the country with great zeal and insight. Mr. Saumya Roy, who has varied experiences in the field of defence services, banks, educational institutions, NGO’s and theatre served as the Chief Guest for this patriotic occasion, he reminded the future managers that the issues, achievements and failures of India are the issues, achievements and failures of its people.

“Grow, and bring the change, that you want to see around you within yourselves,” Mr. Saumya Roy exhorted the students of Jaipuria Indore. “Study, go abroad and do well; but return to your country and feel responsible for it.”
Dr. J. P.Upadhyay, in his usual eloquent an evocative manner, described how ‘giving’ is directly connected to ‘life’ through the beautiful example of the Dead Sea.

“You may recall that the Dead Sea is a very unique water body in the world. Its salt content is so high that no living thing – plant or animal – can live in it. In fact, its density is such that a person will not sink in the Dead Sea, but will be able to float on its surface and perhaps even read a book. The reason for this, many scientists believe, is that the Dead Sea does not have a vent to further percolate the water that it receives from the Jordan River. The river Jordan is also a feeder to the nearby Island of Galileo – a place where organisms and plants of the rarest form flourish. In fact, it is a haven for life. Galileo shares what it has, and that adds to its prosperity. Without ‘giving’, the water mass in the Dead Sea has truly become ‘Dead’. Give back to your country and make it flourish.”

In their own turn, faculty members like Prof. Nitin Merh and Prof. Kanak Gupta spoke inspiringly. While Prof. Jagdish Bhagwat reminded the students of the importance of ‘learn, earn and return”, Prof. Romi Sainy recited a stirring poem that once againe reminded all present what India stood for.

Abhishek Singh, Aditi Sharma and Sanchayika Choudhary were the students from Jaipuria Indore, who expressed how ‘Gen Y’ feels about the nation. It was heartneing to observe how zealously the students spoke about taking India to its rightful place on the world map.

This was followed by an open house debate on what proved to be an extremely thought-provoking affair – ‘Republic Day is Merely a Symbolic Holiday for Gen Y’. It brought out with soul-searching clarity how ‘Gen Y’ has realised its casual attitude towards its country. Many spoke for the motion with stark honesty, accepting their ignorance and apathy towards the importance of the day, and India’s uphill climb to its present position.

The 64th Republic Day gave Jaipuria Indore family renewed vigour with which to be vigilant against corruption, respect the women of the country, and protect and prepare the children for the future, while also taking care of the aged.

“Once I was selected by one of the best Management college – Jaipuria – I did not look any further!” says Amman Raza

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow was the natural choice for Amman Raza, who belongs to the city of Lucknow and has done his schooling from Study Hall and graduated from Lucknow University. As Amman remembers, “I had a 73 percentile in CAT and 96 percentile in MAT and I had been away from my home for a year, so when I got a call from one of the best management institutes in the country – and in my home-town at that – there was no looking further”. He appreciates the effort the faculty puts in and believes they have their finger on the pulse of industry as well as of their students. “This is my 2nd semester and I have interacted with 13 different faculty members, all of whom are well qualified. Jaipuria Noida STUDENT Speaks

Hoola hoopers from California conduct a two-day workshop at Jaipuria Institute of Management Noida.

Over the last one-and-half years Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida has opened our eyes to a world of opportunities. On the 8th and 9th of December, Jaipuria Noida made us realize that entrepreneurship is something more than making money; it is the chance of being happy for life.

Carissa Caricato (from Hoola for Happiness) came toJaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, all the way from California USA, on the 8th of December 2012. She came along with Sarah Page, her partner, and Elizabeth Carter, a student of International Relations from Rollins College, Orlando.Over the next two days Carissa taught us how to hoola-hoop. Who would’ve ever thought that hoola hoop could be a way of spreading joy and happiness? She also explained how her organisationHoola for Happiness, founded in July 2010, was bringing a smile to the less fortunate, orphans, and homeless. Carissa inspired all of us at Jaipuria Institute of Management,Noida to spread joy through our skills and knowledge.

Prior to starting Hoola for Happiness Carissa was the Marketing Director at Crisis Centre of Tampa Bay for nearly three-and-a-half years. After college Clarissa had visited Haiti in 2009, a country near United States, on a mission trip where she hooped with underprivileged kids and orphans. Now Hoola Hoop is a simple sport that involves a toy hoop that is twirled around the waist, limbs or neck. She realized thatthe kids enjoyed hoola hooping very much. When she came back to Florida from Haiti, she started taking Hoola dance classes. It was simply for exercise and fun, and did not involve any community activity initially. After that, she went back to Haiti numerous times, especially after the devastating earthquake of 2010 that left three hundred thousand dead and millions homeless. Every time, along with the relief material, she would keep her own stock of travel hoops for kids. Hooping became more of a calling from God than just a hobby. She quit her job, sold all her belongings to raise money and startedHoola for Happiness.

All of us at Jaipuria Institute of Management,Noida quizzed her continuously about how she raised Capital, how did she make ends meet, how did she travel etc.Through Carissa and the other co-founder of Hoopla for Happiness, Sarah Page, we got to know how a charity organisation works. Finances were usually raised through donations. In terms of accommodation, a family in US would let stay for free. Since a member of her family is in the airlines industry, most of her trips to different countries are free or heavily subsidized. She also takes dance classes to raise money. It was inspiring to know that Hoola for Happiness now had initiatives in 20 countries. Its main customers are churches, which organize mission trips and support the weaker sections of society.

When asked about her initial steps towards India, Clarissa chuckled and explained how it was one of the craziest things that ever happened to her. Apparently, Clarissa was with a friend in Dubai, who suggested that she explore India. Through her friend’s help she tried connecting to missionaries and orphanages here in India and someone from Good News Centre in Ranchi connected with her. Good News Centre has a church and a college and does a lot of social work. Clarissa visited GNC in 2011 and loved the people and the place. Infact, what was supposed to be a 4-day visit, ended up being a 3-weeklong stay. Clarissa conveyed to all of us at Jaipuria Noida that she felt that god has some reason behind sending her to India. Indians enjoy hoola hooping as it is for every one – elders, kids, and women – irrespective of religion. She conveyed how Hoola hooping is the only way through which she can connect to people who do not speak her language. Clarissa elaborated on her plans of teaching women in India how to hoola hoop, so that they can be professional teachers for kids and find gainful employment.

In all it was a great learning experience to spend a few days with Clarissa and her team and get inspired by them to pursue our dreams.

Jaipuria Noida Placement Update

“Unending backing by the Jaipuria faculty creates a family-like support system that a student needs at this time”, says Harshita Shukla

She wants her name inscribed on the honor roll of Jaipuria, Noida and she wants the coveted Gold Medal. Harshita Shukla is not one to rest on her laurels. She topped all the three semesters and nearly topped in all the individual subjects as well. This winner attitude has helped her bag a placement with Orient Fans, a CK Birla Group subsidiary. She is being taken up as a Management Trainee and will be given the opportunity to do project-based work in different departments. After this intense training and monitoring of one year, the company will decide which department she will be absorbed into. Harshita is excited about this great opportunity and shares, “My typical day at work would be working under the senior mentor assigned and delivering on the projects given.”

Placements time is a hectic and nerve-wracking one for the students. Sharing her experience, Harshita says, “The recruitment

process at Orient Fans was a four stage eliminative process. The first three rounds consisted of the Aptitude Test, Group Discussion and Interview and finally, there was a last interview with the Leadership team. The first three rounds were conducted in Lucknow as it was a pool campus and I had to compete with over 90 students. In the aptitude test, which consisted mainly of questions related to quantitative aptitude, 30 students were selected to sit for the next round, which was the group discussion. After the group discussion, 13 students got selected for the personal interview round. My topic for the GD was “FDI in Retail Is Good for the Indian Economy”. I must confess that the personal interview was a real stress test. I was bombarded with questions by a panel of three members who tested my knowledge, capacity to bear stress, etc. I was finally shortlisted for the last interview with the leadership team along with four other candidates. I was the only one to be shortlisted from the Noida campus. The last interview took place on 2nd Jan 2013, after which only two candidates were selected; luckily, I cracked it and found a place in the company.”

Harshita thanks her faculty at Jaipuria for the support and guidance she received in choosing the companies and preparing for them. “I especially would like to mention the support I got from Prof. Jones Mathew, Head of the Training and Placement cell. His backing was incredible and the entire T&P cell was present to solve all my issues”. The intense exercise of interviews and final placements creates a lot of stress and the backing of the faculty and staff creates a family-like support system for the student, something that Harshita is thankful for. “The faculty members had faith in me and helped me through all the stages of the process. My peers were always there to cheer me up, whether it was the first round or when I went through the tail end of the process. It felt like a family.”

Jaipuria Indore Placement Update

“The placement department and communications faculty at Jaipuria Indore conducted frequent mock interviews to help me overcome my weaknesses and make me confident enough to crack the interview.”

Janani Sridhar believes that 15th of December 2012 has been the proudest day of her life. A product of the 1st batch of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore, it was on this day that Janani landed a plum job with Xion Advertising in Mumbai. In so doing, Janani became one of the first three students of her batch – and also of Jaipuria Indore – to be placed.

“Apart from the placement cell at Jaipuria Indore, there is a centralised placement cell for all Jaipuria Institutes in Delhi as well. I got to know about Xion Advertising through the Jaipuria Institute of Management corporate office in New Delhi. There were three rounds in the Xion Advertising placement process. It started with a shortlisting of the resume. This was followed by the first round, a telephonic interview, which I cleared without much problem. The second round of the telephonic interview was much more detailed and tested us mostly on our communication abilities and how best we could handle pressure. This was a tough round, and it was really satisfying to have made it to the final call, which tested us on our overall knowledge.”

As a Business Development executive, Janani is currently handing the promotion division for Xion Advertising. Her work involves indentifying potential clients from the Media & Entertainment industry for a mutually beneficial association.

“I typically start my day by conducting market research with the help of different primary and secondary market research tools. The aim is to shortlist prospects. I then either ‘cold call’ these prospects or send them emails requesting for a short 30-minute meeting, to take the proposal further.Once this is done, the prospecting moves to a second level of discussion and, depending on the outcome of the call, an NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) or an RFI (Request for Information) or RFP (Request for Proposal) is generated.”

Janani has to achieve Lead-based and Revenue-based targets, which makes her job challenging. For her, nothing is more thrilling than to convert suspect clients into prospects by correctly assessing their need.

“I’m new to the job, but I find it very exciting. I had a lot of support from the placement department, as well as the communications faculty at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore. They conducted frequent mock interviews to help me overcome my weaknesses and make me confident enough to crack the interview.”

Janani, who specialised in HR and Marketing from Jaipuria Indore, believes that Jaipuria Indore has equipped her with just the right skills to make it to the top in her chosen field.

“Jaipuria Institute of Management was an excellent choice for me, not just because of its credentials as a B-school, but also because it is a great ‘finishing’ school.”

Ekta Kumari joined Jaipuria Institute of Management as part of the 2012-14 batch. Currently in her first year at Jaipuria Indore, Ekta has a meticulous approach to life and believes in setting priorities in everything she does. With an impressive 78% in her Bachelors’ from West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT), one might expect Ekta to be inclined towards an Operations or IT profile after passing out from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore. Surprisingly, Ekta has different plans.

“When I pass out from Jaipuria Indore, I would like to be placed in an HR profile. You see, organisations that are built around technology need Human Resource managers who understand technology so as to be able to acquire and retain the right kind of talent. This is the reason why I intend specialising in HR at Jaipuria Indore.”

Ekta knows that growing into a ‘people’s person’ has inherent challenges. She believes that Jaipuria Institute of Management will empower her with the necessary communication and soft skills to become a successful HR manager.

“In terms of faculty, infrastructure and technology-driven classes, Jaipuria Indore is amongst the best B-school brands in the whole of central India. But my choice of B-school had a lot to do with my career aim of moving into the field of HR. Jaipuria Institute of Management made an excellent choice for me, not just because of its credentials as a B-school, but also because it is a great ‘finishing’ school.”

Ekta feels that her first six months at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore have been really special and enjoyable. She points out that she has never felt so involved in things happening around her in her entire life.

“From the Freshers’ Party to Encore, every day at Jaipuria Institute of Management is full of energy and action. Since I come from a small town called Giridih (in Jharkhand), it was not really easy for me to open up to people from day one. But the faculty members of Jaipuria Indore play the dual role of educators and mentors to perfection. They help you come out of your shell.
The seniors have been really friendly and it is nice to see them getting placed with great organisations.”

Ekta is happy about the fact that Jaipuria Institute of Management is giving her more than what she had expected. She is positive that Jaipuria Indore will prove to be her ticket to corporate glory in the future.
