Students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore make the most of the Finance Conclave 2012

The Finance Conclave – which is the flagship event of the Finance and Economics club of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore – was organized on the 3rd of November 2012. The topic for the one-day conclave was ‘A Rendezvous with FMFM: Fast Moving Financial Market’, and was prominently divided into two technical sessions. From welcoming the guests, to anchoring the sessions, to proposing the vote of thanks, the conclave was entirely anchored and managed by the students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore.

In his welcome speech, Dr. J. P. Upadhyaya (Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore) set the agenda for the brainstorming by eminent corporate personalities and noted academicians of the country. Stressing the importance of the plethora of financial products available in the market, he dwelt on their pros and cons, and suggested that the conclave deal with these issues. He advised the students of Jaipuria Indore to make the most of the collective wisdom of the stalwarts of industry.

This paved way for the first Technical Sessions, which had a select panel consisting of Mr. Amber Arondekar, MD- Power Train corporation and Mr. A. Shreenivas, Regional In-Charge, SIDBI. Interestingly, both Technical Sessions scheduled for the day were preceded by a role-play by the students of Jaipuria Indore. This format was widely appreciated by the panelists, as it helped them understand the objectives and expectations from the discussions. The sessions were organized in an open-house discussion format, which went down very well with the students of Jaipuria Indore.

“The key is to bring back the numerous parallel economies to the mainstream and foster transparency and uncorrupt conduct at every stage – starting from an individual,” observed Mr. Amber Arondekar, who spoke with great insight on Global Financial Markets. “It is not the methods of managing the economy, but the ones who are handling it, who are responsible for the miserable situation. The tools of Monetary and Fiscal Policy are to be executed with very special care with a watch being kept on going to extremes. This is where economies like the Euro Zone and US are going wrong and the result is global turmoil in the entire financial sector. India is no exception when it comes to large fiscal deficit and the growth of a parallel economy.”

To supplement his points, Mr. Arondekar made effective use of data and statistics, to showwith shocking clarity the mammoth size of the EuroZone crisis and the role of PIIGS nations, especially Greece.

Speaking on the Financial Market in the context of SMEs, Mr. A. Sreenivas painted a picture of the process through which his organisation – SIDBI – supports SMEs as well as start-ups through direct financing, refinancing, consultancy, guaranteeing, technical know-how, rating services and many more. He elaborated on the gaps in the financial market related to small-scale industries, as well as the numerous benefits of SMEs and how they contribute to economic stability. He also shared what organisations like SIDBI look for before approving a project for funding, and gave various tips to the future entrepreneurs of Jaipuria Indore, for them to use in their own start-ups.

The panelists for the second Technical Session were Mr. Rajendra Goyal, CA and Mr. B.J. Rao, Branch Head, Central Bank of India. Speaking on Capital Markets, Mr. Goyal’s was an in-depth session, dwelling on how an investor thinks and acts before investing.

For his part, Mr. B.J. Rao presented the nitty-gritty of the currentfinancial market from the perspective of commercial banking. The session was highly interactive, with youngsters of Jaipuria Indore showing a keen interest in how the entire banking channel operates. Various simple bank transactions were demystified, and a clearer understanding of the moves made by RBI and commercial banks emerged. Mr. Rao helped the Jaipuria Indore students understand how fiscal measures and monetary measures may differ – referring to the recent CRR cut – and how these changes influence the fast-moving and changing financial market.

The conclave was an opportunity for youngsters of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore to get a finger on the pulse of industry, and they made the most of it.

“It’s great to be the ‘first placed’ of the 2012 batch at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida,” says Jyoti Anand, Management trainee at Deloitte.

Jyoti Anand joined Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida in 2010 with very high expectations. Jyoti had distinguished herself by securing 87% in her B.Com Honours course at the undergraduate level. Not only was she the college topper in Patna Women’s College, but she was also was the recipient of the Dr. Kapileshwar Jha Scholarship Award for securing the second position in the entire Patna University.

“My dream company has always been Deloitte. It has always been the first company to visit Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida during the placement season. This suited me very well as I aspired to be the ‘first placed’ of my course.”
But the recruitment process of Deloitte was not as smooth as Jyoti had hoped it would be. There were 7 rounds in all, with the first being an online listening and reading test. This was followed by the reasoning test round, the finance basics test and an excel test. While Jyoti cleared these rounds, her real challenge came in the fourth round, known as the Versant Telephonic Round, which essentially assesses verbal skills in English.

“The Telephonic round was a big hurdle for me; I kept missing the cut-off by 1-3 marks. I was really depressed after appearing for the Versant round thrice and missing it by a whisker every time, and decided to quit. But my friends at Jaipuria Noida didn’t let me give up, reminding me that it was my dream job and I should fight for it till the very end. The faculty at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida also backed me, advising me to trust in my hard work and sincerity. This gave me renewed strength to try and make the cut.”

After a month-long wait, Jyoti Anand was called for the Interview process, which made up the last three rounds for Deloitte.
“The HR interview and the Business interview were a cake-walk for me, but the Technical interview was a high pressure affair. I had to really think hard to impress the interviewer in the technical round.”

Ultimately, Jyoti Anand did get her dream job, as well as the tag of being the ‘first placed’ of her batch at Jaipuria Noida. Jyoti is currently placed as a Management Trainee at Deloitte Tax LLP (India US Taxation).

“This position focuses on providing individual tax and business tax return compliance process services, including projections, tax accounting, and related income tax compliance research for US federal, state and international tax matters. It also includes identification and preparation of advisory services related to income tax matters. May and September were really hectic but enjoyable, as that’s when most of our clients in the US file their IT returns.”

Jyoti feels that Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida teaches its students never to give up. She advises her juniors at Jaipuria Noida to keep up their fighting spirit, against all odds.

“I owe a lot to professor Vijayvargay and professor garg of Jaipuria Institute of management Jaipur. They prepared me exhaustively for the bank of Baroda interviews.”

Vyom Gupta passed out with the last batch of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur in June 2012. Placed on campus at Jaipuria Jaipur with the Bank of Baroda, Vyom is currently working in Jodhpur (Main Branch).

“The most important and enjoyable part of my job is that my profile requires me to deal with NRI customers and verify various types transactions entered by the clerical staff, like the passing of cheques and opening of new accounts. Interestingly, since I’m one of the young faces in the branch, many of the customers approach me even if the query is not related to my department. I somehow feel morally obligated to try my best to get their job done, without stepping on anybody’s toes. This has earned me goodwill with the customers, and appreciation from my superiors.”

Vyom’s teachers at Jaipuria Institute of Management recall him as soft-spoken, yet someone with very high moral values and at all times, the ability to call a spade a spade. Infact, Vyom is still not sure what made the recruiters at Bank of Baroda choose him over more deserving colleagues.

“Frankly speaking, I was not really expecting to get selected at Bank of Baroda. You see, a few of the answers given by me were incorrect.”

In all likelihood, the recruiters found his forthright honesty a necessary trait in a Finance Manager at Bank of Baroda. Vyom believes that the greatest strength of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur is revealed only towards the end, during the placement season.

“I owe a lot to my faculty at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, especially Professor Lokesh Vijayvargay and Professor S.P. Garg. After failing to clear ITC and Indian Bank, I could’ve easily fallen prey to disappointment, but Professor Vijayvargay and Professor Garg just did not let me give up. They kept me pepped up and prepared me exhaustively for the Bank of Baroda interviews. They kept harping on that the profile offered by Bank of Baroda – in Finance – was custom-made for me.”

Vyom Gupta believes that his relationship with Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur has grown stronger after passing out, as he has begun to see the logic in many of its practices. He is confident that once he has learnt the tricks of his trade, he will make Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur proud.

“The Faculty at Jaipuria Institute of Jaipur helped me in every field – from how to make a cv, to corporate etiquettes.”

Genpact was one of the dream companies forPrerna Bhadani. So when recruiters from Genpact came to Jaipuria Institute of Management Jaipur in November 2011, Prerna was very excited. They were looking for a Management Trainee with a Finance background, and Prerna fitted the profile completely.

“We had an introductory session with the interviewers from Genpact. All of us were then divided into three groups for group discussion. I was in Group 2. When our turn came, I was a little tense. We were asked to sit in semi-circle and given a topic to discuss for 10 minutes. In the last 5 minutes we were asked to present our conclusions individually. Genpact is a dream company for so many of us; it was not an opportunity that would come my way again, so I was very nervous about clearing the GD.”

Prerna need not have worried; her name was amongst the top students on the list. She began preparing for the next stage, which was the interview.

“In my Interview many questions were asked, ranging from ‘What are your interests?’ to ‘Why do you want to join Genpact?’and even ‘What will you do if you get a better job than Genpact?’.There werealso some basic questions related to accounting but mostly they tried to put me under pressure by firing questions one after the other. These were typical questions to judge my patience level, but I had been well prepared by my faculty members at Jaipuria Jaipur. I managed to answer all the questions confidently, politely and with a smile on my face. After the interviews, we had to wait for four hours before the results were announced. My name was called out first… I was the first one to be placed from my batch!”

Prerna is currently placed in the Jaipur Office of Genpact. She is a Management Trainee for Securitization team of Capital Market Group within the GECA process of Genpact. Her work is related to wing-to-wing accounting of securitized equipment deals;like booking of settlement entries, doing monthly reconciliation & closing, and reporting.

“Jaipuria Institute of Management Jaipur showed me the path to the corporate world but it was my faculty and my peer group that taught me how to run on this path. The Faculty at Jaipuria Jaipur helped me in every field – from how to make a CV, to corporate etiquettes. During the placement months they supported me, and encouraged me to face interviews. We were taken through many mock interviews, in which we learnt what to wear, how to sit, and how to answer during the interview process. Faculty members very often gave us tips for GD’s which were very effective.”

Prerna believes that getting a dream profile with Genpact has helped her become confident, self-dependent and secure.
“My job with Genpact is my greatest achievement so far; and I owe it to Jaipuria Institute of Management Jaipur. The two years spent there are the best years of my life.”

She advises her juniors at Jaipuria Jaipur to define their ambitions in a time-bound framework. She assures them that this will give them the confidence toachieve targets.

Industry and academia brainstorm ‘marketing of services to millennial India: challenges and opportunities’ at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida

Continuing with its series of vibrant debates and discussions to churn out future management trends, Jaipuria Institute of Management organised a Marketing Conclave on 3rd of November 2012 to look into the nuances of ‘Marketing of Services to Millennial India: Challenges and Opportunities’. This one-day conclave hosted 10 leading practitioners from different service industries, who were there to discuss the unique challenges inherent in the marketing of services in India and how they would pan out in the next decade; especially due to the extremely low brand fidelity in the millennial Indian consumer.

Dr. Anup Singh, Director of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, extended a gracious welcome to the participants and guests. He went on to deftly set the tone for the keynote speaker, Mr. Anurag Batra, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief, Exchange4Media.com and Pitch. Mr. Batra started on a thought-provoking note, dwelling upon the qualities of the millennial Indian.

“He is technology-savvy and aware of all the technical devices available in the market today. To stay connected with the millennial Indian, one must use the toys and tools that the millennial Indian uses. It is the age of ‘screenagers’, and the size of the screens is becoming smaller and more mobile by the day. As marketers, we would do well to remember that a digital identity is as important as a physical one. Today, no company can ignore M-commerce in marketing. Real marketers think beyond product and market share and find ways of impacting the lives of everyday citizens.”

The other guest speaker in the inaugural session, Mr. Sachin Garg, Author/Publisher, Grapevine India, spoke insightfully about the controversies and ‘whacky things’ being used as tools to generate attention and raise the curiosity of people in order to publicise magazines. As he summed it up, “An author writes two stories; one is the story in the book, and the other is about the book.”

Thus, the tone was set for the three panel discussions that followed, with each highlighting the complexities of marketing services today for the benefit of the audience at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. Panel 1 discussed the insights from industry practitioners into the way consumers perceive and consume services in today’s India.Ms. Aditi Malik (Co-Founder, 100 Camps), Mr. Kishore Chakraborty(Sr. VP, Consumer Insights and HFD, McCann Eriksson), Mr. Anurag Kapoor(Creative Head and Filmmaker, Redmart Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.) and Mr. Manish Puri(GM-Corporate Sales, Indigo Airlines) were the panelists for this session. They iterated the need for marketers to get the customer comfortable with the brand, the product, the organisation, and the sales and customer care executives of the organisation. From the Jaipuria Noida students’ perspective, the liberal use of relevant examples was very enriching.

In the post-lunch session, students of Jaipuria Noida had the opportunity to hear the second panel discussion, which dwelt upon ‘Customer Engagement and Loyalty: The Stickiness Challenge’. With a plethora of brands in almost all services available to the millennial Indian, creating and maintaining a long-term relationship with consumers is a tough task. The panelists included Mr. O.P. Agarwal (CGM, Reserve Bank of India) and Mr. Anurag Sharma (GM, Rockport – Adidas-Reebok Group). The message that came out of the discussion pointed to one major quality for the ‘stickiness quotient’ – Empathy. The panelists believed that the ability to empathise with the customer would be the bedrock of customer retention for the millennial Indian.

In the final post-tea session, the third panel comprising Mr. Tarun Ahuja(Founder Director, Nutcrackers.com), Mr. Debashis Sur(President, EPU, Tata Teleservices) and Mr. Somnath Mitra (Senior Consultant, IBM)brainstormed on ‘Service Innovation: Being Relevant for the Future’. With the rate of change getting faster and new products being launched even before the older versions have completed their life-cycles, the race for innovation has reached blistering proportions. The panel deduced that only by creating a magical experience for the customer could a company be ‘future relevant’. The speakers exhorted service marketers to follow the ‘Apple’ model if they were to remain relevant in the future for the millennial Indian – and that would only happen through innovation.

The third and concluding session was filled with enthusiasm and information for the students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. All in all, the discussions helped participants visualise how service marketers could acquire customers, generate loyalty, innovate, decipher consumer insights and be relevant for the future.

A chat with Dr. Jai Prakash Upadhyay, the new director of jaipuria indore, on his vision and mission for one of the fastest emerging b-schools

On the 21st of July 2012, Dr. Jai Prakash Upadhyay took over the reins of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore. A PhD in Management from IIT-Delhi, Dr. Upadhyay carries more than 25 years of diverse experience with organisations with the Government of India and Afghanistan, as well as the United Nations (UNDP & International Organisation of Migration). For more than a decade now, he has been involved with Executive Education at the national and international level, with premier management institutions like FORE School of Management, IMT Ghaziabad and WIU. He has conducted around hundred MDPs for senior executives of the public sector and for MNCs, including international organisations like UNDP, UNICEF & WHO.

Below is a short excerpt from a chat between the Campus Journalists of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore and Dr. J.P. Upadhyay on his views about the brand new, first-of-its-kind digital campus of Jaipuria Indore, and his vision for the institute.

Campus Journalist – Welcome to Jaipuria Indore, Sir. We wish you a wonderful tenure ahead. Firstly, how do you see your role as the Director of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore?

Dr. Upadhyay – I see myself as responsible for the overall functioning and growth of the institute. We are part of the Jaipuria Group of Management institutions and have a shared mission and vision. As the Director, I have to manage all the three verticals of the institute – academics, administration and external interface – and lead ‘team Jaipuria Indore’ to achieve the mission and vision of the institute.

I have adopted a highly consultative and participative approach in managing the affairs of the institute. Academic issues are discussed and decided in the meetings of the Faculty Council, which meets almost every week. Even for managing the administrative and campus development issues, we have set up committees. My endeavour is to create synergy and collaboration between various committees/teams and to ensure that they are mission driven and vision aligned.

Campus Journalist – How has your teaching and industry experience been so far? Are there any particular experiences you would like to share?

Dr. Upadhyay – I cherish my experience as Institutional Development Advisor of UNDP, when I set up the Afghan Civil Service Institute in Kabul. I led the institutionalisation of its organisational structure, staffing, training curriculum and operational manuals; I also prepared its strategic plan. I mentored the faculty and management team of the institute. Another assignment I enjoyed was as Professor & Programme Director at FORE School of Management, Delhi. I’ve also enjoyed the challenges of advising organisations in implementing the Balanced Score Card and setting up mentoring programmes. (I am a certified designer and implementer of Balanced Scorecard -a strategic performance management system from 2GC, Australia).

My experience has been mostly in the management of large public delivery systems, and designing and implementing capacity development interventions. I’ve also led and managed the Learning and Development function in large organisations at a national and international level. Currently, I am doing a consultancy assignment for UNDP to design a leadership competency framework and training strategies for civil servants.

Campus Journalist – I think it was in that context that you were recently invited to address an international seminar on ‘Civil Service Leadership for 21st century’ held in New Delhi in September, wasn’t it? On a different note, we know that you have led nearly 100 MDPs through your career. You are a certified ‘Trainer of Trainers’ in Training Needs Assessment, Design, Management and Evaluation of Training from Thames Valley University UK, ITC, ILO Turin (Italy), and AIT Bangkok. Do you see this as one of your thrust areas in Jaipuria Indore?

Dr. Upadhyay – Undoubtedly. Conducting MDPs and facilitation skills is my forte and I enjoy organising Capacity Building and Personality Development workshops. You must’ve already experienced the recent workshops on ‘Enhancing Self Awareness’ and ‘Enhancing Self Effectiveness’ for managing stress and enhancing concentration. We will be building on this expertise to conduct Executive MDPs for Corporate Houses in Jaipuria Indore.

Campus Journalist – What will your philosophy be towards classroom teaching and pedagogical tools?

Dr. Upadhyay: I enjoy engaging and enabling, and believe in infusing a high degree of academic rigour in whichever organisation I serve. As a ‘Trainer of Trainers’ I am slowly and steadily bringing in new training technologies and techniques to the classrooms of Jaipuria Indore, with extensive use of real life cases and illustrations. I believe in adopting a basket of methods to suit diverse learning styles and ensure class participation. Personally, storytelling and humour are an integral part of my delivery style. It leads to high engagement with students and helps me enjoy taking classes.

Campus Journalist

Thank you so much for your time, Sir. We hope to gain immensely from your diverse leadership experiences. We already see a lot of energy and enhanced corporate interest in Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore since your arrival.
