“Jaipuria helped me become market ready”, says Swapnil Tiwari

Swapnil Tiwari is a sharp businessman even if he claims to be ‘not so good’ with Finance! The business, however, is not a strictly financial venture. Founder Chairman of Naked Colours, Swapnil explains that his venture is working in the sectors of poverty alleviation, opportunities enhancement and preservation of ancient art forms across ancient tribes and cultures in India. “I use creativity for social good. Focused mostly on Naxal-infested areas, the venture intends to save art forms and the culture of ancient tribes from extinction, through innovation in those arts and finding them a viable market.”

Working on the maxim of ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world’, Swapnil set up his business to offer services in five verticals – Neo Indus Arts, Psyche Art, Freethot Business, Freethot Education and Naked Colours Innovations. He incorporates innovation in all strata of his business, especially in product, service, advertising and HR development. An entrepreneur at heart, Swapnil completed his PGDM from Jaipuria Noida in the year 2007. He was selected as a Marketing Officer at Bank of India and had spent 7 months on the job when his entrepreneurial spirit took him to his destiny. He first experienced the joy of entrepreneurship by participating in a ‘Business on Campus’ competition organised by NEN at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida. Ever since, NEN has been an inspiration and a silent support to Swapnil. In an interview, he said, “The fact gave me courage in tough times, that there are people out there who understand the worth of an idea and the purpose of a thought.” NEN, Swapnil says, is his Dronacharya.

Swapnil is an artist himself, with more creative than analytical skills. However, he built up his management and business skill base to recognise the gaps in the market for art. ‘Sarv Managalam’ or ‘Good for All’, drives this man, who grew up with dreams as his constant companions. “With great power comes great responsibility. And with this thought, I decided to invest my power of creation towards a greater good – Naked Colours was born.” Swapnil believes that Jaipuria helped him become market-ready, specifically the training and mentoring that he received. He says that the faculty at Jaipuria helped him and guided him through the process of placement. “Commencing from the initial GD preparations to the interviews, we all had hand-holding training sessions. We were quite ready to face the real fire.”

Through his ventures – Naked Colours, 3 patents, 28 Copyrights, India’s first Hinglish novel in writing – Swapnil has achieved a lot in his young life. His passion drives him, and his advice to his juniors is, “The biggest power lies within you. Never lose belief in yourself. The biggest inspiration lies within you. Search for that and pursue your dream”.

My admission interview for Jaipuria Institute of Management remains the Toughest Interview

“My admission interview for Jaipuria Institute of Management remains the toughest interview I’ve faced to date; even tougher than making it to Deloitte. It turned me into a new person.”

Sameer Vivian Joseph believes that if there is one event that changed his life, it was the interview for admission to Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida with Professor Anurag Singh.

“To date, that remains the toughest interview that I have ever appeared for,” recollects Sameer. “The learning from it was so intense that it simply blew away all my inhibitions and set the tone for the coming two years at the college. Ever since Professor Anurag Singh has had the most active role in shaping my career path and in my overall development as a good management student. Before joining Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, Group Discussions were always my pitfall. But participation in the mentor discussion programmes and personality development classes turned this into my strength.”

Today, Sameer Vivian Joseph is not only a star performer at Jaipuria Noida but also the toast of the town with friends and relatives in his hometown Meerut. Right at the beginning of the placement season, Sameer has landed a plum profile with one of the dream companies for any youngster – Deloitte. The diffident young Meerut boy has grown wings, and is all set to fly!

“It is indeed a dream start. In the short run, I see myself working hard and smart, climbing up the corporate ladder with better responsibilities and good all-around performance. In the long run, I wish to become an entrepreneur in the field of education.”

Sameer feels that Jaipuria Noida has the right approach towards placements, starting to prepare its students as early as July with mock interviews and guest lectures. Having pursued Finance in his MA, he didn’t have much trouble brushing up on taxation and revising core concepts in the build-up to the Deloitte interview.

“The Deloitte selections were divided into two stages. In early October, I managed to clear the first stage rather easily and qualified for the three rounds of interviews scheduled later in the month. The initial HR round was a test of confidence in which various behavioral and job-related questions were asked. It was followed by the business interview round. From basic accounting terminology to technical concepts of finance, this interview tested my analytical abilities. The final round was a mix of all that had we had faced in the earlier rounds; it was more of a check on the consistency and performance level as a candidate for the job.”

Sameer believes that the first-year experience at Jaipuria Noida made a difference to his personality. In the very first trimester, he broke into the top three in his course in terms of his CGPA. He also blossomed on the co-curricular front, securing the runner-up position in the intra-college Marketing quiz of 2011-12. Given his flair for writing, he was entrusted with the tasks of writing reports for the Marketing Conclave – 2011, as well as the Law Conference.

“I did my summer internship at the Central Bank of India, New Delhi. I worked at both the regional as well as the branch office level. From the SIP experience, I certainly realized that the world out there is altogether different from the classroom. The experience at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida has taught me to multi-task and manage time effectively. One has to plan for goals to be able to achieve them. Therefore, my learning stems from the fact that I prioritized my goals on the basis of importance, time, and strategy.”

Sameer believes that a good B-School must critical factors: Placement, Faculty, and Infrastructure. He points out that in his case, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida has proven excellent on all three counts.

“Read business news daily. Think hard. Keep fit.” This is the advice from Professor Susobhan Goswami, Marketing and Business Strategy, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida.

Hardly does a day go by when Professor Susobhan Goswami misses his workout at Jaipuria Noida gym. His short and sweet advice to his students at Jaipuria Institute of Management is – ‘Read business news daily. Think hard. Keep fit.’ With 29 years of experience as an academic, Professor Goswami feels that his role in the classrooms is to see that discussions progress in the right direction.

“My first insistence is always on discipline. Once the process is set, then I begin by getting the students to come out with their notions and experiences with regard to a subject. If there is not much to go by, then leads are given to generate discussions. On a good day, these discussions quickly snowball into participation by the whole class.”

Dr. Goswami regularly organises seminars and workshops, mostly on General Management and a few in Marketing. He believes that students learn a lot by hearing live cases. A compulsive researcher, Dr. Goswami’s favourite subject is Business Strategy formulation. He has published numerous papers on topics such as ‘Marketing Strategies to Children’, ‘Recent Strategic Mergers and Acquisitions by Indian MNCs’ and ‘Marketing Teleserials to Women Viewers’. He is currently working on a case pertaining to ‘Trent Retail Store’, as well as another one on ‘RIM’s Blackberry’.

“I strongly believe in a participative-yet-fun teaching method. If there is excitement with a dose of passion in the classroom, students are more likely to be kindled with the same fervour.”

Apart from his academic responsibilities, Professor Goswami is also a part of the Library and Anti-Ragging committees of Jaipuria Noida. He regularly attends brainstorming sessions of the corporate world, like the recent E-commerce conference organised by ASSOCHAM. He feels it helps him gather real-time insights into the workings of industry.

“For me, teaching is completely engaging. This stint with Jaipuria Noida has also sharpened my intellectual skills.”

Dr. Susobhan Goswami believes that Jaipuria Noida has a sociable student community. Beyond the classrooms of Jaipuria Institute of Management, he is quite well known for his keen interest in music and travelling.

“I am loving every moment of my life at Jaipuria”, says Guneet Singh Ahuja

Guneet Singh Ahuja landed up at Jaipuria Institute of Mangement with the clear objective of studying in one of the best Management colleges in India. Looking back at that time, Guneet says, “I wanted to secure my future and Jaipuria’s reputation and its faculty profile convinced me I wanted to be here”.

Guneet loves swimming, singing, dancing, cooking and playing outdoor games. Like a lot of youngsters today, his life is fast-paced and he is greatly involved with shooting and editing his own material as well. Hailing from Amritsar, he did his HSc from Springdales Senior School, Amritsar and his graduation in B.sc (Hons.) Economics from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.

“I am enjoying every moment of my life at Jaipuria”, says a visibly excited Guneet, who has been involved with several activities in the first year. He is the Student Point of Contact (SPOC) in the MRC (Media Relations Club), which he claims to enjoy the most among all the activities he has been a part of. He is also the yearly co-ordinater of the institute’s E-cell, a member of NEN (National Entrepreneurship Network), campus committee co-coordinator, Marketing, club member of the industry interface team, member of the placement committee, and the vice-coordinator of table tennis and chess. However, it’s hostel life that is giving Guneet some of his most cherished moments of college life. “I will always remember my birthday this year, which was celebrated with great enthusiasm by everyone in the hostel!”

Guneet aspires to be placed in an MNC or a prestigious Indian company in the next two years. His dreams are strongly supported by his efforts and the institute itself. “I feel it’s the faculty here that has prodded me on the path of learning and pushed me to explore my own potential. The depth of the course and its structure are pillars that uphold learning for me.” He compliments the faculty further, saying that they are “fantabulous”. He thinks their way of teaching, communicating and guiding students is incomparable. “Moreover”, he says, “the faculty here stresses on case analysis and applications-based concepts, which is really helpful in converting a book-worm or a geek into a manager, as it compels you to think smartly and out of the box”.

Placements now loom large in Guneet’s mind and he is confident that he will be selected by one of the many reputed companies that visit Jaipuria. He appreciates the teaching pedagogy at the institute and feels motivated; in short, after his stint here, he is ready to face the corporate world.

The Rocket Singh competition at Jaipuria institute of management, Jaipur is a great mix of intense sales pitches and laugh riots

There isn’t a more fascinating business in the world than the business of selling. Selling is the energy source for every successful enterprise, irrespective of its character. Over the years, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur has come to be known as the host of a unique annual contest of wits between the Smart Salesman and the Over-smart Customer. Held on the 30th & 31st of October 2012, the ROCKET SINGH Marketing Event this year saw participation from 34 teams from 14 different B-schools, including the other sister campuses of Jaipuria Institute of Management (Noida, Lucknow and Indore). With 3 participants in each team – one was designated Team leader and the other two as team members – the two days of competition were a fantastic mix of exceptional selling skills, and the frequent laugh riots that broke out.

Day One of the contest started with a preliminary round, where teams were expected to come up with a sales pitch for products as ridiculous as the mousetrap, and as bizarre as the ‘Yamraj’ himself! The 34 different Sales Pitches took up the entire day. The judges for the event – Mr. Neeraj Gupta, Senior Manager, Reliance Broadband Network Ltd., Jaipur; Mrs. Preeti Bhandari, Company Secretary; Dr. Sheenu Jain and Dr. Abhijit Nair, both faculty at Jaipuria Jaipur – shortlisted 20 teams for the final round on the basis of their exceptional product pitching and creativity.

On Day 2 of the event the final battle for the ROCKET SINGH (Smart Salesman) and BOL BACHAN (Over-Smart Customer) of Rajasthan was fought tooth-and-nail in a completely packed Jaipuria Jaipur auditorium. The top 10 teams from Day 1 were to contest for the title of ‘ROCKET SINGH’ (Best Sales Team), while the remaining 10 teams contested for the BOL BACHAN award (Best Customer Team).
“Technically speaking, the sellers were to make a compelling sales pitch, while the buyer raised objective queries,” explained the participants from Jaipuria Jaipur team. “ROCKET SINGH was symbolic of an astute salesman and BOL BACHAN personified a savvy and informed customer. The role of the BOL BACHCHAN was to make the life of ROCKET SINGH difficult by raising queries, and ROCKET SINGH had to sell unusual products to the customer.”

The products were not just unusual – many of them were literally unsellable! Mop Slippers, Hand Pants (branded as ‘handerpants’ by the team selling it), Pocket Shower, Ticket to Heaven, Book your own Burial and Blackie Toothpaste were some examples of those. While the situation had many in the audience rolling with laughter in the auditorium of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, the contest threw up some really talented ROCKET SINGHS and awfully difficult BOL BACHCHANS, with no one willing to give an inch.
“More than a competition, it was a great learning experience for most of us”, said the runners-up team of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore, which included Abhishek Pratap Singh, Amol Sharma and Sahil Punjwani. “We learnt that salesmanship is not just about selling the product; it is much more than that. It’s actually the process of communicating the value of a product or service to customers.”

Ultimately, the jury ruled in favour of JECRC B-School team for the ROCKET SINGH trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 5,100/-. Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore was adjudged the Runners-up and was awarded a cash prize of Rs. 3,100/- and a trophy. The BOL BACHCHAN Trophy (Best Customer) was awarded to Poornima School of Business Management with a cash prize of Rs. 2,100/-. BOL BACHAN Runners-up went to the other JECRC B-school team in the fray, with a cash prize of Rs. 1,100/. The sales team for ‘Handerpants’, ‘Book my Burial ground’, ‘Mop Slippers’ and ‘Butter Stick’ products and services won appreciation from one and all.
This was a watershed year for the ROCKET SINGH event, with pan-Indian B-school participation. It also established the prominence of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur as one of the premier B-schools in Rajasthan.
