Jaipuria Lucknow STUDENT Speaks

“Jaipuria has changed my life and has positively impacted my career”, says Peter

P. M. Peter prides himself on his diverse educational background. He is a Keralite who belongs to the city of Lucknow and did his schooling from the St. Francis College, Lucknow. He subsequently pursued a degree in Bachelor of Computer Application from University of Lucknow. His decision to pursue a PGDM comes from his interest in Human Resource management, which he developed during his 18 months of work experience with a BPO. Amid other responsibilities, he also handled team conflicts and issues there.

Jaipuria Lucknow was never on Peter’s list of management colleges to consider. However, he had just finished 18 months away from home in a job in Delhi and his parents were keen to have him stay. He decided to join Jaipuria to be able to live in Lucknow, but his opinion about the college has changed a lot since then. He feels that Jaipuria is one of the best management institutes in the country today, perhaps right after IIM. “In the last one year I have learned a lot beyond books! I have done live projects and workshops, I have attended a workshop of HR in Vivanta, I have learned about sponsorships, and got lots of experience and in-depth understanding of business.”

Peter describes himself as a shy guy before he joined Jaipuria, but even that has changed now. As he says, “I was a very shy person and was never into extracurricular activities. However, at Jaipuria I got an opportunity to take part in a lot of things. During our Freshers’ programme, I won the first prize in a team for the Ad mad Competition. I have been the anchor for almost all the events in our institute. I’m a part of the Class Representative Committee, the HR Club and also the Student Affairs Committee at the institute.”

Peter opted for an internship in recruitment with Sahara India Life Insurance Company Limited; since he believes the primary role of an HR professional is recruitment and selection. During his internship, he also had the opportunity to conduct job evaluations, and design job descriptions and job specifications. He shares that his internship not only helped him hone his skills in human resource but also gave him deep insights into the insurance sector. “I was fortunate enough to work with Sahara India Life Insurance Company Limited, an SBU of Sahara India Pariwar. Sahara is a conglomerate with a diversified profile and is also considered to be one of the best employers in the nation.”

An Akon and cricket fan, Peter aspires to grow in the field of HR in the coming years. He believes Jaipuria has changed his life and positively impacted his career. He attributes a lot of these changes in him to his faculty at Jaipuria, who are available to him 24×7 and support him in every way possible. “Jaipuria”, he shares, “provides students with overall development rather than academic supremacy alone!”

FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Jaipur

“Jaipuria provides me with an environment to think, to challenge, to digress, to smash and recreate the future.”

Professor Sheenu Jain teaches Marketing and Entrepreneurship at Jaipuria Institute of Management. A self-confessed ‘phone and friends addict’, Professor Jain’s classes are quite a hit with her students at Jaipuria Jaipur, because she deftly weaves her immense knowledge of traveling, cooking, psychology and philosophy into her lectures. Professor Sheenu Jain exudes a youthful joviality usually, but inside her classrooms, she is transformed into the thorough professional that she is.

“I remember this MDP session with the Zuari Industries at the All India Marketing Meet. Before the session on Communication Skills for Rural Area, the HR Manager introduced me to a gentleman with over 40 years of experience at Zuari, who said upfront, “What can this girl talk about that I don’t know!” But soon after my session, the same gentleman came forward and said, “I was wrong; age has no bearing on knowledge, and your session was an eye-opener.”

A Masters in Applied Psychology, Professor Jain started her career with a marble firm as a corporate relations manager for international clients, but her selection for the coveted ‘Young Management Scholar’ to IIM Calcutta was too compelling to let go of. And so, the corporate world’s loss was Jaipuria Jaipur’s gain.

“I love to be part of an environment which allows me to think, to challenge, to digress, to smash and to recreate the future. Jaipuria provides me with a platform to constantly reinvent the wheel.”

Her personal favourite teaching area is Entrepreneurship. In fact, Professor Jain is contemplating a start-up of her own a couple of years down the line. She believes Jaipuria Jaipur is the right place for her to understand industry dynamics, and understand the critical role of decision-making, institution building and development, before finally starting her own venture.

“Last year, I received a grant from AICTE to set up an Entrepreneurship Development Cell on Campus. So this year, my entire focus is on setting up the EDC and creating an entrepreneurial ecosystem in Jaipuria Jaipur, through Prayaas – Centre for Entrepreneurship & Skill Development.”

Professor Sheenu Jain wears many hats at Jaipuria Jaipur. Apart from being the Chairperson of EDC, she is also the Chairperson of Parivartan – the Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility. She will also be convener of the forthcoming National Conference on Media and Communication in 2013. In 2011, Professor Jain was among the 32 recipients of Goldman Sachs – Tools for Growth – young Mentee Scholar in Mentorship Programme by London Business School and NEN. In fact, one of the woman entrepreneurs she mentored under this programme has been nominated for the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women Entrepreneurs – Skill Development Programme, to be held in London this November.

“I’m currently working on the paper ‘A Comparative Analysis of Strategies of Environmentally Concerned Firms in India & the United States: Developing an Agenda for Effective Green Marketing’. I wish to study the issues, concerns and trends regarding eco-friendly products, packaging and communication strategies implemented in selected industries in response to environmental concerns.”
Professor Sheenu Jain advises her students at Jaipuria Institute of Management to give top priority to the fulfillment of their dreams.

“Do not postpone your dreams. Set a deadline for them and achieve them; nothing gives you better satisfaction in life than this,” she concludes.

Jaipuria Jaipur Placement Update

“Had I not been in Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, I would not have had the opportunity of working with a company of this stature.”

Dhruv Arora had worked really hard for the placement month at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur. He knew that, like in the past few years, every corporate house with a stake anywhere in Western India, would be visiting Jaipuria Jaipur to recruit managers who fit its profile. When placements began in November, Dhruv started with a bang, clearing the Group Discussions and being selected for interviews with as many as six big-shot companies. But when he was unable to crack the interview for any one of these companies, Dhruv thought his luck had run out.

“I was very sad and demotivated. I had a talk with Professor Anvay Bhargava regarding this. He listened to me patiently, and said, ‘I am sure that as you are very sincere and patient, you will definitely make it into a very good company. Just be calm and give your best during the interview.’ This was right before my fateful interview for DLF Pramerica.”

On the 25th of February, Dhruv appeared for an interview for the 7th time, in what was one of the biggest companies on the Jaipuria Jaipur campus this year. The profile that DLF Pramerica was aiming to fill was that of an Assistant Sales Manager. There was just one position, and the competition was tough.

“After the first two stages – Presentation and Group Discussion – only 5 candidates were shortlisted for the interview. Despite the fact that I was the last to be interviewed, I felt that it went off pretty well. My interview lasted for around 20 minutes. I was asked to briefly introduce myself, and then was asked a few questions on Marketing and Sales, the Insurance industry and some questions related to defence. Surprisingly, I seemed to be doing a very good job of the interview, getting all the answers right.”

The words of Professor Anvay Bhargava proved absolutely right. Dhruv Arora had made it!

There was immense support from his faculty and peers during the placements at Jaipuria Jaipur. “We had regular GD sessions and mock interviews which helped us a lot during the selection process. One-to-one counseling sessions with the faculty were organised for every student. External faculty from other colleges and corporate professionals also guided us on personality development and ways to tackle the GD and interview.”

In the past few months, Dhruv has not only understood the entire Insurance sector, but has very quickly grasped the finer aspects of DLF Pramerica products. he has also shown immense confidence in making presentations to officers of the rank of Captain, Major and Colonel in the Armed Forces.

“As Associate Sales Manager, I am entrusted with achieving business results in the defence sector (Indian Army) via work-site sales process through effective distribution of insurance products in the target affinity. I am also responsible for Agents/Officer Prahari recruitment, development and meeting the business targets month on month according to the plan.”

Currently, there are 6 teams of Associate Sales Managers in the Jaipur Branch of DLF Pramerica. In the context of the business and the people hired by every sales manager, Dhruv’s team is at the top. In fact, he has been achieving 150% of his monthly goal-sheet consistently for the past couple of months.

“I think, had I not been in Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, I would not have had the opportunity of working with a company of this stature. I would strongly recommend to my juniors at Jaipuria Jaipur who are eyeing a career in Sales and Marketing, to appear for the selection process of DLF Pramerica.”

And why not? After all, Jaipuria Jaipur now has an alumni base in DLF Pramerica!

Students of Jaipuria Lucknow learn the finer points of RTI activism

As a part of its on-going process of keeping its student managers in tune with the times, Jaipuria Lucknow hosted a one-day workshop on RTI activism. The firebrand RTI activist Mr. Anoop Prakash Awasthi, a member of the Liberal Youth Forum of India, conducted the workshop on the 16th of October 2012.

“It is no secret that RTI has been a crucial force in bringing out all these scams in the public, private and government sectors that you see today,” Mr. Awasthi pointed out, in his introductory session. “It is a power that you students of Jaipuria Lucknow should be well aware of as future managers and leaders.”

The interest that this one-day workshop generated can be gauged by the attendance, which included almost the entire staff and faculty of Jaipuria Lucknow as well. Mr. Anoop Prakash Awasthi systematically took his audience through the entire process of structuring and filing an RTI application.

“We now know that even a common man can be an RTI activist,” said Aditi Shipra, a first year PGDM student at Jaipuria Lucknow. “The case studies presented by Mr. Awasthi were really helpful. He was able to answer our queries through his personal experiences as an RTI activist. The Right To Information Act of 2005 has empowered us and forced organisations to be transparent. We can now access the kind of information that will help us fight for our causes.”

The workshop had segments dedicated to the objectives and reasons behind this act, how it can be used as a mechanism to bring in transparency and revelation, and the concept of RTI activism. Mr. Awasthi also focused on the two ways of getting information through this act – Reactive Information and Proactive Disclosure – and how to read between the lines and put two and two together.

“The main aim of having such events is to make Jaipuria Institute of Management students aware of all that goes on inside our country’s legal framework,” observed Professor Maneesh Yadav. “So when they step out of Jaipuria they are better equipped to grow into aware managers and industry leaders.”

The question and answer session that took place after the talk ensured that this well-appreciated workshop at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow stretched way beyond its allocated duration.

Students of Jaipuria Jaipur get a taste of panel discussions.

In keeping with its efforts to give real-life experiences to students, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur organised a Panel Discussion on the 17th of October 2012, with the panel comprised entirely of student managers. Four student managers of the 2011-13 batch of Jaipuria Jaipur made up the panel, and they discussed what is regarded as one of the most crucial topics in a knowledge society – ‘Intelligence Quotient versus Emotional Quotient’. After the initial hiccups, the panelists – Ajay Singh, Himani Wadhwa, Ritish Sharma and Monisha Mohanan – grew in confidence as the discussion moved forward in defining the two concepts, and their importance in present times. Dr. Prerna Jain from the Economics department adeptly steered the discussion as the Chairperson of the Panel.

“At various points, I was surprised by the level of preparation of the panelists,” remarked Dr. Jain after the panel discussion. “Especially when the discussion reached the critical point of defining why a person with a high IQ and lack of EQ is susceptible to failure, the students on the panel handled it like seasoned experts.”

After establishing the importance of Emotional Quotient, the panelists, in the later part, focused on how EQ is of far greater importance in the work-force of a 21st century organisation.

“EQ is about flexibility, creativity, adaptability, stress management, problem solving, self awareness, interpersonal skills and the ability to take on leadership,” elaborated Ritish Sharma, when a student in the audience asked her about the attributes of EQ and IQ. “IQ is all about the cognitive abilities of an individual. A good indicator of success in the past has been the level of one’s intelligence but today this tenet is questioned.”

The panelists concluded that IQ will get somebody through school and college, but it is EQ that will get one through life. It explains why we often see someone hardly noticeable in school doing so well in his or her profession.

Alumni Speak Jaipuria Noida

“Professionalism equals success”, says Jaipuria Noida alumnus Prashant Shukla.

Prashant Shukla who is a graduate of the 2008-10 batch, he said his one bit of advice to Jaipuria students would be to “learn professionalism.” “I Professionalism is the key to success”, says Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida alumnus, Prashant Shukla.” It’s one of the main things he learned at Jaipuria Noida, along with how essential it is to take part in extracurricular activities, possess networking skills and have the ability to interact with different corporate persons.
Currently with All e Technologies Pvt. Ltd. serving as a business analyst for Microsoft CRM, Shukla started out as a territory manager for Hindware in Gurgaon, before moving to Dubai to work as a sales trainer for Citibank.

Next, he took up his current posting, but will soon be on the move again, this time to Sydney, Australia to work for CEMBS PLC. “By the end of this month, I’ll move to Australia and switch my job and stay there for two to three years,” he said. “It’s a great overseas opportunity – that’s why I’m taking the leap!”
Shukla has fond memories of Jaipuria Noida, his favourite being working for the entrepreneurship and placement cells. “Under the entrepreneurship cell, I worked as a head co-ordinator. In the placement cell, I was made the placement co-ordinator and that was really important for me. It was a great opportunity, as I gained in-depth knowledge about industry and I was taught about professionalism. These things helped me to groom myself and move smoothly to an industry in working life.”
He has high praise for the placement procedure at Jaipuria. “As I was the placement co-ordinator at Jaipuria, I knew all the processes and procedures there. The placement cell works really hard to get their students placed. They help at each step, conduct workshops, tell students what to do and what not to do, and how to crack the job interview.”
One of the main things he learned from the Jaipuria placement cell – and that is taught to all students – was that it is very important to ask the interviewer questions, as it indicates that the student is confident enough to be a part of the company. “I don’t think any other B-school teaches their students this factor,” he said.
In fact, his praise extends to all areas of Jaipuria Noida. “I see a lot of change in myself from when I started”, said Shukla. “The grooming I’ve received, and the ability to sustain it in industry, are all aspects that I learned at Jaipuria.”
He suggests that everyone do his or her MBA at Jaipuria Noida. “I think Jaipuria Noida is the best. I also think that in the time to come, Jaipuria is going to be among the top 10 B-schools in India.”
