Jaipuria Jaipur celebrates its 6th Annual Convocation with traditional gaeity. Mr. Paras Kuhad, Additional Solicitor General, Supreme Court of India is the Chief Guest

On the 18th of May 2013, students of the 6th Batch of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, passed out of their alma mater to take their place in the corporate world. The convocation ceremony is the most awaited day for any management student, but the inspiring presence of the Addl. Solicitor General of the Supreme Court of India, Mr. Paras Kuhad, made the 6th Annual Convocation of Jaipuria Jaipur even more special.

“Learning is a continuous process,” Mr. Kuhadreminded the students, while congratulating them on having earned their spurs in the world of management. Remember to enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realise that those were really the big things. I believe life is in the details. Simple pleasures throughout the day can be far more gratifying than one amazing weekend. When you connect the dots between all these little joys, life seems fuller and more satisfying.”

26 students of the PGDM batch of 2011-13 were awarded their diplomas. The girls outdid the boys when it came to getting top honours, bagging 5 of the 6 major awards. Anusha Bansal was the outstanding student of the year, receiving the Chairman’s Gold Medal from Mr. Kuhad, as well as the trophies for being best in Finance Management and Marketing Management. Ritesh Sharma was the only male management graduate among the toppers, winning the Vice-Chairperson’s Silver Medal. The other female outstanding achiever for the 6th Batch was Sneha Jaiswal, who won the Director’s Bronze Medal, as well as the trophy for being best in Human Resource Management.

“We need corporations and managers who adhere to the triumvirate of Indian values: SATYAM (Truth), which is the ethical component of business; SHIVAM (Welfare),  which should be the economic objective of business; SUNDARAM (Beauty),  which should be an aesthetic outlook for business: aesthetics here does not imply physical beauty but purity of ideas and morality in behaviour,” said Mr. Sharad Jaipuria, Chairman of Jaipuria Institutes of Management. He further said that these were the very values imparted to young management students at Jaipuria Jaipur. “In the ultimate analysis, what matters is that truth prevails in the end. Do not forget that the noble values of caring, sharing, service and sacrifice have kept our society away from the dangers of extinction and made it energetic at all times.”

Dr. Prabhat Pankaj, Director, Jaipuria Jaipur presented the Jaipuria Jaipur’s progress report.Outlining the growth trajectory – in terms of the institute’s improved rating, ranking and placements, expanded infrastructure and intellectual capital, research contributions, executive development and other significant academic milestones – Dr. Pankaj advised the students to be good brand ambassadors of their alma mater.

As the dignified gathering marched out after declaring the Convocation Ceremony closed, students of the passing out batch elatedly threw up their ‘graduates’ hats’ in the air and hugged each other joyously, rushing to meet proud parents and family members who were in attendance. Promises of ‘we’ll keep in touch!’ were shouted out and soon faculty members joined in the celebrations as well, reminding the young managers that Jaipuria Institute of Management would always be a homeawayfromhome to them.

"Kindling the Desire for Knowledge Among Students" says Dr. Kavita Pathak

Jaipuria Institute of Management, with its flourishing campuses in Lucknow, Noida, Jaipur and Indore, has earned quite a reputation for itself with its PGDM courses. The institute strives to encourage students to think out of the box and give them a transformational experience, which philosophy is put into practice by its Dean academics Dr. Kavita Pathak. When asked about ensuring classroom participation from students, Dr.Pathak reveals the secret – “Engaging with the students and making them curious to learn more.”
Dr.Pathakexplains her teaching philosophy by saying that the role of a teacher is to make himself / herself redundant over time, just like that of a parent. She has been with JaipuriaLucknow since its inception in 1995 and sees herself as an enabler for student learning. She believes in “providing cues and teasing young minds with stimulating questions,” to kindle the desire for knowledge among students. An MBA and PhD, Dr.Pathak has about 20 years of teaching experience behind her, which include not only the time spent with Jaipuria Institute of Management,Lucknow but also her four-year teaching and research stint at UQ Business School, University of Queensland, Australia. The latter, Dr.Pathak says, exposed her to “gold standards in academic practises.” The cross-cultural work life and interactions with students from diverse backgrounds added to her experience. In fact, she even mentions the courses on research process and qualitative methods that she undertook at UQ as those that changed her perspective as an academic author and researcher.
However she is quick to credit her experience atLucknowwith preparing her for the demands of UQ Business School, where she emerged as one of the best teachers when evaluated by students. At JaipuriaLucknow, where she has taught International Marketing, Services Marketing, Business Research Methods, Fundamental of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour, as an Associate Dean today, Dr.Pathak now handles aspects of student engagement besides academics.
During her tenure, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow has organised three national conferences on various themes and Dr.Pathak proudly mentions the recently-held three-day SIP (Summer Internship Programme) workshop that helped students sail through their SIP projects. With a few published papers to her credit,Dr.Pathak hopes to complete two papers on Higher Education and Hi-Tech Marketing this year as well.
And the message this committed educationist has for students? “You are what you think you can be. Challenge the limits and take life as it comes.”

My teaching experience with Jaipuria, Jaipur has been a big learning for me as well. While I’ve enjoyed making them aware of the developments taking place in the corporate world, as visiting faculty I have found the opportunity to interact with youngsters, to have discussion with them, and share their opinions and thoughts.”

Jaipuria Jaipur Placement Update

“At Jaipuria Institute of Management, every placement is a team effort.” says Ranjeeta Kumari

Ranjeeta’s placement happened pretty late in the placement season, but she is more than happy about it.
“I’ve been placed with theEGO Group of Companies, which is one of the biggest dealers of Wooden Flooring, Wall Decor, and Furniture for corporates. As a Business Development Executive, I have been assigned to EGO’s franchise concept store,DESIGNER SPACE, in Andheri(West), Mumbai.”
Endowed with a natural artistic temperament, Ranjeeta took very little time to get a hang of the Wooden Flooring and Wall Decor section. Her daysareoccupied with ‘cold-calling’ interior designers and decorators, with the aim of fixing meetings to make presentationsonEGO’s product line.Ranjeeta is also responsible for handlingwalk-in clients at Designer Space, when she is notvisitingprospective clients to make presentations or take the business forward.
“Currently, I am studying all the catalogues in Wall Coverings and Wooden flooring to get a thorough product knowledge. While this helps in cold-calling and making pitches, it is also something which I find deeply interesting. My seniors are very supportive and help meto understand the technicalities of the industry.”
Ranjeeta recalls that the two-round recruitment process at EGO could’ve been difficult, but her ready humour and deeply creative nature – encouraged at Jaipuria, Jaipur- made it a cakewalk.
“The first round was with an HR representative of the EGO Group, on the 26th of April 2013 and the second round was a Skype interview with the one of the company’s directors on the 27th of April. The first round of interview was based on a form, which we had to fill before the interview. The form consisted of questions pertaining to our personal details, our own SWOT analysis, where we saw ourselves after five years, why the company should choose us, details of prior job experience and achievements. Thanks to the in-depth sessions at Jaipuria Institute of Management, my answers were specific and in bullet points.I did not go into too much detail, so that I could have aces up my sleeve during the interview round.”
Ranjeeta’sHR round was elaborate in questions but short – just 10 minutes – in duration. The most important question for her was “Two words that define you”.
“I answered “Creative” and “Friendly”. I was able to elaborate by showcasing my achievements, like being the‘Decorating Coordinator’ for national level events like Annual Sports Meet 2013 and ABHYUDAYA 2013,the Jaipuria annual fest, at Jaipuria, Jaipur. There were some other questions – like “Do beautiful girls make better salesmen?” -which could’ve been tricky, but thanks to our soft skills training and interview training at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur, I turned this into an advantage. I explained that while beauty makes the initial process easier, what ultimately matters is the bigger picture. Without hard work, dumb beautiful girl can’t bring in sales;sales needserious hard work. So ‘Beauty with Brains’ is what really matters.”
Right through her interviews,Ranjeeta was able to answer every question, bringing in examples from her tenure at Jaipuria, Jaipur. Be it her summer internship at Dish TV India Limited – where she had to roam around the city and interact with DTH brand retailers– orher five-day training in BIG BAZAAR, where she had to deal with customers, explaining the Payback card scheme at Big Bazaar, she used all her prior work to her advantage.
“Last but not the least, I was given an imaginary detergent brand and asked to find a distributor for it. This is something that is well taught at Jaipuria, Jaipur.I replied by creating a blend of online and offline methods, and primary and secondary data – mainly on the internet – that would help research the real market.”
Ranjeeta attributes her successful placement to the continuous motivation and counselling by her faculty, the efforts of her placement committee, and her loyal friends and peers at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur.
“At Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur every placement is a team effort,” says a happy Ranjeeta.

Jaipuria Lucknow STUDENT Speaks

Nowhere else will you find students appearing for the same interviews, helping each other out. Jaipuria Institute of Management has a truly extraordinary culture” says Prachi Sahai

Prachi Sahai has cracked one of the most sought after profiles in the Indian job market, that of a Probationary Officer with Federal Bank. While this might be the high point in any youngster’s career, for Prachi it is the journey at Jaipuria Institute of Management which has been of greater significance.
“The time I spent at Jaipuria Lucknow and the way I have been groomed is indeed a big achievement for me. It’s not just the studies – which I also did in college –it’s also that there was much more to being at Jaipuria Institute of Management. I was part of the student activity group (SAG) which made me undertake so many challenging and exciting tasks. More so, I was the college MC for almost all events, and I guess I enjoyed it so much that I am going to miss it thoroughly. I was also involved in many other activities, like the annual fest, debate, extempore competition, etc. It’s not just a job, or a PGDM, which I am taking from my college; it’s the treasure of everyday grooming that I am taking away at the end of my college life.”
Here on-campus placement process began with an online aptitude test comprising questions dealing with general knowledge, quantitative ability, verbal ability, logical reasoning and computer competence. This was followed by an online psychometric analysis for the job profile. The qualifiers were then tested through aGroup Discussion; the topic for Prachi’s group was ‘Commercialisation Of Healthcare’.
“My contribution to the discussion was not just in terms of my views, but also in managing group dynamics and leadership skills. But where it all came together for me was the face-to-face interview. After clearing the GD, we were called for the interview the following day. It was a comprehensive interview which lasted for about 24 minutes. After a few questions about my background, they checked my knowledge of their organisation. This was followed by general awareness questions and a few domain specific questions. They also gave me situations like what I would do if as a branch manager I found out that one of my employees had stolen a lakh of rupees from the bank. To this, I answered that rather than approach the individual in my official capacity – which could intimidate him – I would rather approach him personally and make him understand that this act would sooner or later be proved against him, leading to him being blacklisted. I would advise him against putting his career on the line and to show his loyalty towards the organisation that was taking care of his bread and butter. I would urge him to display ethical values by admitting his fault and returning the money. The panel was highly impressed by this answer.”
Prachi credits the highly qualified faculty of Jaipuria with equipping her with in-depth knowledge of the banking sector.
“The faculty at Jaipuria Lucknow is the best one can get. Not only do they teach us really well, but they are always approachable. The most basic thing which you need to bag a good placement is good domain knowledge; you should at least know the job that you are being hired for. In that respect, I am immensely grateful to my teachers. They gave me a clear and strong knowledge of the basics. The mentor-mentee training programmes helped us get a feel of how it is to face an interview panel and our mentors pointed out our follies, so we got the chance to work on those loopholes. When it comes to my peers, Jaipuria Lucknow has an amazing culture. Students appearing for the same process are helping each other out, motivating and supporting each other. It’s extraordinary!”
Prachi Sahai will shortly be joining Federal Bank. During her two year probation, she’ll be expected to manage a major proportion of bank operations and marketing. She is positive that here too, the Jaipuria edge will help her excel.

“You will find your x-factor at Jaipuria Institute of Management.” says Prof. Kanak Gupta

Prof. Kanak Gupta’s role at Jaipuria Institute of Management goes beyond his classes. Apart from being a faculty member in the Organisational Behaviour& Human Resource department, Prof. Gupta has a crucial role as the Asst. Dean, Student Affairs, as well as the Chairperson, Admissions. An MBA from Krannert School of Management (Purdue University, Indiana, USA), Prof. Gupta has been with Jaipuria Institute of Management right from its inception, and brings in global best practices in business education to this completely digital management college.
“Jaipuria Indore has a completely new culture that allows respect for each others’ views and criticism is given only in order to improve things. Following my core intent to be learner-centric, I plan my classes ahead of time, visualise the same, and try to fit them into the larger scheme of things and overall learning. Right at the start, I organise several ice breakers – offbeat orientation, remedials to bridge the gap among students, a new way of presenting a course outline, a new learning method, learning by doing and numerous situations – empowering students to lead the class room discussion without any fear of being wrong, and encouraging students to come up with ideas suited for their learning.”
Infact, Prof. Kanak Gupta is currently working on a semi-autobiographical novel where he’ll be speaking from the heart in telling a story of how an MBA from one of the best B-schools in USA and the world became part of the team involved in building a world-class management college – Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore.
Prof. Kanak Gupta became an entrepreneur fairly early in life- 17 years, to be precise. With his co-founder friends, he has been able to create the most prolific English theatre group in the country –Theatrecian – that has been recognised and profiled by the likes ofthe BBC, India Today, and YourStory.in.Prof. Gupta was honored with the Young Creative Entrepreneur Award by the British Council in 2010, and was the youngest student in his MBA class at Purdue University. He got his first job in a Venture Capitalist funded start-up in London and worked for some of the best known consulting firms, training outfits and consumer companies in Europe for almost six years.
“While working, I was also ‘closet’ faculty; I was invited as a special guest across B-schools worldwide. Even then, I believed in experiential learning. I moved to academia when a call from within told me that I probably need to make a difference–or at least try making a difference- to the intellectual capital of the country.”
According to students of Jaipuria Indore, Prof. Kanak Gupta’s classes are “great fun”. Workshops, games, activities and movies add up to making them a fantastic learning experience. Prof. Gupta personally enjoys teaching behaviour studies. He views himself more as a trainer of Talent Management, Cross Culture and Change Management. He confesses his bias towards social media and self-development, having pioneered the same in some places he has worked in.
“There’s probably a difference of 5-6 years between me and the students. It perhaps makes it easier for me to empathise with their situation. However, students often say that I am a strict disciplinarian… wonder where that comes from!”
Prof. Gupta is a voracious reader, theatre artist, music and movies buff, and is hooked to social media and politics. An untiring blogger, he watches a lot of sport- cricket, football and tennis.
“So if you are on KBC, please feel free to include me for your ‘phone a friend’ call, especially for movies, sport and current affairs! I used to love running, but ever since I fractured my leg three years ago, that love has taken a backseat. I love travelling, and have seen almost a quarter of the globe already.”
As one of the designers of the Jaipuria Indore curriculum, Prof. Gupta believes thatlife in Jaipuria Institute of Management is designed to recognize and enhance the ‘X’ factor in every student.
“Campus life is a home away from home. A complete business education must go beyond technical knowledge, offering you the environment in which to develop a game plan for life. Our objective is to help each student define his or her calling in life and grow as a leader in all areas of life. You should be challenged to follow your passion so that your life’s work has significance to you, as well as to society.”
He assures aspirants to Jaipuria Institute of Management Indore that “you will find your X-factor, define your own success goals, prepare yourself to succeed, and then work hard to make it happen.”

FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Noida

“My personal teaching philosophy is simple. If I haven’t consumed at least half a litre of water during a session, I haven’t been energetic enough” says Dr. Amar Nath Chatterjee

When it comes to subjects like ‘Creative Thinking’ and ‘Personality Mapping’, few on the management landscape of India are as well known as Dr. Amar Nath Chatterjee. Dr. Chatterjee has conducted an unbelievable 108 MDPs on these subjects all over India ever since 2004. More than 2700 Team Leads and Managers have attended his 2-day programme on Personality Mapping alone – right up to the level of Vice Presidents of TCS.
It was in 2008 that Dr. Chatterjee began taking Guest Lectures on these two topics at top-notch management colleges like XLRI Jamshedpur, Jaipuria (Noida), IMT Ghaziabad and IIM Tiruchirapalli.
“Since July 2012, I have been regularly teaching at Jaipuria, Noida as an Adjunct Professor of Organisational Behaviour/HR and Operations Management. My only other commitment is a 3-credit course on ‘Personality Mapping’ for the 2nd year students of IIM Trichy as Guest Faculty. Overall, Jaipuria has been a great teaching experience and an even greater learning experience! To be back with the ‘kids’ is always “youthening”. But of course, there will always be some fantastic kids in the class making my day, and there will also be some very naughty ones who have to feel challenged to be able to give their best. Jaipuria is a wonderful blend of head and heart, youth and experience, brilliance and perseverance, and awareness and aspirations.”
Dr. Amar Nath Chatterjee comes with a phenomenal 36 years of industry experience. After his B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, Dr. Chatterjee started out in the Steel industry at Burnpur (WB), Bhilai (MP) and Bokaro (Bihar). But after three years in the steel industry, he shifted to the IT industry… and never looked back. His 33 years in the IT industry include organisations like IBM, CMC, IDM, ORG, HCL, ET&T/STP, Cadence and TCS. He has executed multiple functions ranging from Hardware, Software, Marketing and Delivery Management to Manpower Management. He has also covered the length and breadth of India working for the government, PSUs and MNCs.
“I usually adhere to corporate story-telling as a method of teaching in my classrooms. I gauge the level of interaction constantly by asking questions and seeking suggestions from the students, and interspersing my lectures with PPTs and video clips. I build on concepts from fundamentals with the help of inputs from the students themselves, assigning group-exercises and role-plays, or presentation of a case analysis.”
Dr. Chatterjee often brings his excellent industry network to bear when organising major events at Jaipuria. The most recent example of this was at the HR Conclave 2012, which saw a host of luminaries from both industry and academia addressing students and teachers on the challenges of HR in the emerging era. An avid researcher, Dr. Chatterjee has, in his four years as an academician, published six widely acclaimed research papers. Most notable amongst these is ‘A critical evaluation of the instruments for measurement of software development team performance’, which was presented in the Annual GDBA Conference in New Carrolton, Maryland, USA, on 17th October 2008 and published in the Global Digital Business Review. His Doctoral thesis, accepted by XLRI Jamshedpur in March 2012, was on ‘Developing a scale for measuring software development team performance (SDTP)’ and was a fine-tuned version of the paper presented in Maryland, USA. Dr. Chatterjee is currently researching the ‘Effect of team reward on team performance’.
“My personal teaching philosophy is simple. If I haven’t consumed at least half a litre of water during a session, I haven’t been energetic enough,” says Dr. Chatterjee with a smile. “If I haven’t learnt something afresh in each session, I haven’t really taught. If I am just teaching a course or a subject and not being a role-model, then it is of not much consequence.”
Dr. Amar Nath Chatterjee believes that humility is the true measure of education, and never fails to remind his students of the same.
