Jaipuria Indore STUDENT Speaks

“What nailed it for me was the fantastic infrastructure and the great brand name of Jaipuria Institute of Management.” Arijit Roy

Arijit Roy has the quiet confidence of a management student backed by solid experience of the corporate world. This confidence springs from the fact that he has worked with two of the biggest private banks in India – HDFC and ICICI – and is currently doing his post graduation in Management from one of the most futuristic and digitally empowered B-schools in the country. When you ask him where he sees himself two years from now, pat comes the reply, “A manager at Nomura Investment Banking Company”.
Born in Hazari bagh (Jharkhand), Arijit studied in St. Xavier’s School till intermediate, before opting to do his BBA from ICFAI University, Hyderabad. He then went back to his home-town Kolkata, working initially for ICICI Bank as Senior Officer, Customer Service Branch Banking (CSBB). On being offered the position of Deputy Manager, CSBB by HDFC Bank in Delhi, Arijit made the shift. Through all these changes, upgrading his BBA to a PGDM stayed at the back of his mind.
“What nailed it for me was the fantastic infrastructure and the great brand name of Jaipuria Institute of Management. I knew that Jaipuria Indore would provide a boost to my career.”
Arijit Roy says that he will remember his First Year at Jaipuria, Indore, for four major reasons – terrific classroom environment, faculty help, freshers’ week and celebrating birthdays in the hostel!
“Barely halfway through my post graduation in Management at Jaipuria Indore, I’ve already participated in mega-events like Encore, Big Data, Marketing Wizard and Social Media Conclave held within the college campus. Also, as the IT coordinator, I’ve had the opportunity to conduct various quizzes and competitions. Of course, Encore was special since I was the Head IT coordinator for this event.”
Arijit’s family is located in Kolkata. While his father works with the Bank of India, he has an elder brother who is the HR manager at PwC. Like many Bengalis, Arijit has a creative streak, especially when it comes to making sketches.
“All my life, I’ve been curious and wanted to explore new things. I’ve made it a point to learn from past mistakes in life. I’ve carried this attitude with me to Jaipuria, and so far the journey has been great. One of the big pluses here is that faculty members don’t just help you understand what you are supposed to do, but also educate you on what you are good at. They have helped me feel at home here in Jaipuria Indore.”
Arijit feels that having work experience behind him has been of immense advantage to him at Jaipuria. Since a majority of the faculty members are from an industry background, they have helped him understand the best practices and align himself accordingly.

Jaipuria Jaipur Placement Update

For Amrita Jaiswal, Jaipuria Jaipur has been all about “One Job… and countless memories"

For most students who enter a B-school of repute, the entire deal comes down to ‘Placements’. On-campus placements are the most challenging part of being in a B-school; but not for Amrita Jaiswal.
“Placements in Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur are not a question of “whether or not”; it is only a “matter of time”. Not just the placements, my entire academic experience in Jaipuria has been pretty good. In Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur there is only one thing more than the guarantee of a job – the guarantee that all your queries will be answered. This helped me in a big way during my interviews for Remorphing. Most of the questions in my interview were conceptual, concerning little things that could easily have been forgotten or ignored had we not learnt their practical application.”
Amrita has been placed with Remorphing in a dual profile of HR Selection and BD. The last couple of months at Jaipuria, Jaipur have helped her gather all the necessary know-how to handle her job profile.
“The happiest part for me is that when I was informed of my selection, my mother happened to be around. We both were jumping with joy! For me, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur has been like a home away from home, where I had come to be groomed and placed for a job, but actually have ended upleaving with countless memories. The faculty has been excellent, especially Prof. Anvay Bhargava, who prepared me for the interview. It was as if he knew exactly the questions that would be put across to me. The first year was absolutely fun-filled, with lots of time with friends, discussions, fests, events, submission of assignments and exams. But after the Summer Internships at the end of the first year, every single batch-mate of mine at Jaipuria, Jaipur had understood on-ground realities. It was almost as if, with the snap of a finger, people had become more focused on their careers.”
Amrita has a pretty simple strategy with regard to her soon-to-begin corporate career – work hard, take responsibilities, adapt fast, be flexible and learn quickly. She is positive that if she sticks to these basics, she’ll get where she wants to go very quickly – all thanks to Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipuria.

“All these clubs and groups are dynamic hubs. I enjoy being a part of all of these. It’s not easy for me to point out any single club out as the most enjoyable. I can single out the most memorable time I have had here, though. It was at the Jaipuria, Lucknow annual event, Ojas. I enjoyed taking on responsibilities while having fun with my friends during Ojas 2012.”
Ajitesh is looking forward to an even more engaging 2nd Year at Jaipuria Lucknow. He is positive that with the systematic grooming by the world-class faculty at the 6th best B-School in North India, he will be able to fulfill his expectations of himself.

FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Noida

Business Communication can be learnt best from corporate examples, believes Prof. Ashok Advani of Jaipuria Institute of Management – an industry veteran with 39 years of experience in Operations.

Prof. Ashok Advani has been associated with Jaipuria Institute of Management since January 2012. As an Adjunct Professor, his very presence in the classroom is inspiring. Prof. Advani comes with a phenomenal industry experience of 39 years, of which 33 years have been in Shipping and Logistics. A teacher of Business Communications at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Prof. Advani believes in keeping his class engaged through activities. He encourages student participation in the learning process through discussions, real life examples, and through self-esteem building.

“One sure-shot way of keeping students engaged is by bringing in my own corporate experience. But this element is very tightly controlled in my classes, as I only bring in experiences related to the topic of study. My teaching style revolves around examples from the corporate world, since there is no better way of teaching the finer aspects of Business Communication. It works very well in my attempts to give the students value for their time spent, as well as learning enrichment.”

Prof. Advani believes that while the current business education scenario in India is ‘land based’ and focuses intensely on ways of doing business only on the sub-continent, in the near future, Shipping & Logistics, and International Business will emerge as key subjects.

“Apart from teaching PGDM students, I find interacting with corporates during the MDPs (Management Development Programmes) conducted by Jaipuria Institute of Management extremely satisfying. In fact, the recent MDP conducted for a prominent corporate house by Jaipuria Noida was also a wonderful learning experience for faculty members like me. The beauty of Jaipuria Institute of Management is that it allows its faculty members to explore themselves beyond the classrooms. I am deeply engaged with Mentor Groups, conduct Personal Interviews of prospective students in association with the admissions cell, and enjoy guiding students in personality and value building.”

Prof. Advani believes that the life of an academician has allowed him to explore things that he had always wanted to do. He lists listening to music of various genres, such as Western Instrumental & Country, Indian Instrumental, Fusion and, of course, Bollywood’s golden oldies as one of his favourite pastimes. He says that over time, his mind is actively turning to research and teaching is slowly turning into a passion for him.

“My classrooms are not about ‘teaching differently’, but ‘learning differently’. I always remind students that a true professional adds value to whatever he or she does and lives a life of value. I tell them to leave a mark of excellence in whatever they do, appreciate what they are and what they have, and always keep moving forward, striving for more. I advise them not to get into the trap of comparisons, which can be a vicious one. I remind them that there will always be somebody ahead of and somebody behind them.”

Prof. Advani describes his year-and-a-half long journey with Jaipuria Institute of Management as “enjoyable”. He points out that the team spirit among faculty members, and complete interest in each and every student have been the real positives of his association with Jaipuria Institute of Management.

Jaipuria Noida STUDENT Speaks

“Our seniors at Jaipuria Noida taught us not just the do’s and don’ts of college, but in many cases, the do’s and don’ts of life as well.” – Tarun Harit

For Tarun Harit, more than the big ticket events, it is the small gestures of appreciation shown by the faculty that makes Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida a great management college.

“Since my orientation week, I have been into extracurricular activities. I remember how Prof. Durgansh Sharma had awarded me a chocolate for my performance in a skit. I also won a Parker pen for a pantomime act during orientation week. Over the last year, I have participated in many events like Udaan (where I won the first prize for dancing), Spardha, an Ad-Making show and Solo Singing, and have been the coordinator of many events. But those small gifts from the faculty, won during my first week – the orientation week – in Jaipuria Noida, are my most treasured possessions.”

Tarun is a BTech from IT, and has been a Jaipur boy all his life, where his father is a much-respected doctor and his mother a teacher in a government school. But when it came to choosing a professional course, he followed in the footsteps of his elder sister, who has also done an MBA.

“I had decided to do my MBA in the Delhi-NCR, for obvious reasons. I went through numerous websites and sought the opinions of a number of people before zeroing in on Jaipuria Institute of Management. What ultimately mattered was my father’s stamp of approval.”

Tarun’s first year has been studded with achievements. Apart from being the Class Representative, Tarun has also covered and photographed the entire Spardha event as a member of the MRC ( Media Relation Club). He has balanced academics and extracurricular events beautifully, aggregating the second highest marks in his class, and winning the appreciation of his peers and faculty. Having just entered his 2nd and final year at Jaipuria Noida, Tarun Harit is pursuing a specialisation in Marketing.

“My interaction with the senior batch has been the high point of Jaipuria Noida. Not only did they teach us the do’s and don’ts of college, but in many cases the do’s and don’ts of life as well. I am still in touch with quite a few of my seniors, despite them having passed out of college and their hectic jobs in very good companies, they are always willing to to help me out of my difficulties. The other big plus at Jaipuria Institute of Management is undoubtedly the faculty. They are cooperative, ever-ready to give you time, and pay attention to each individual in the class. They start teaching from scratch so that each student gets the basics right.”

Tarun Harit is deeply impressed by the CSR initiatives of all Jaipuria Institute of Management campuses. He believes it is something that makes Jaipurians stand out in the long run.

“Apart from active interaction with our adopted villages, we recently had a village day or rural day, where our institute had invited people from villages and had arranged an interaction over lunch for them. It was wonderful to see smiles on their faces. They felt nice that somebody was there to look out for their interests.”

Now in his final year, Tarun is targeting a marketing profile with a good MNC. He is positive that Jaipuria’s grooming will make this happen during the placement season, which begins five months down the line. Given his personality, he believes in taking short steps up a ladder, instead of jumping two or three steps at a time. He plans to stick to his first job, growing into the role of a full-fledged Manager five years later.

FACULTY Speaks Jaipuria Jaipur

“In my experience, students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” – Prof. Lokesh Vijayvargy

For many students of Jaipuria Institute of Management who come from an Engineering background, Professor Lokesh Vijayvargy is a role model. According to them, since Professor Vijayvargy is also from an Engineering background, he understands the kinds of challenges that engineering students face in adjusting to Management classes.

“When I joined Jaipuria Jaipur in 2007, I realised that students were not very comfortable with the Operations course. I began by systematically simplifying the in-class teaching, and correlating all concepts with reality and business. It is my attempt to integrate my lectures with the changing environment and business. I always use videos, CEO interviews, virtual tours, live projects and management games in the class to explain concepts. Since I teach all mathematical courses for the PGDM programme, I focus more on decision-making and interpretations rather than calculation.”

Since he is fairly young, Professor Vijayvargay is often looked upon as an “elder brother or friend” by many of his students. He is known to present a holistic picture of business management. It is for this reason that even those students, who are not specialising in Operations, choose Supply Chain Management and Project Management as electives.

“Beyond-the-classroom teaching can be very impactful. I always try to solve problems for students by putting myself in their shoes. I spend more time with my students beyond the classroom hours to understand them.”

A B.Tech and an M.Tech from IIT Delhi, Prof. Vijayvargay is currently pursuing his PhD from MNIT, Jaipur. Known for his enthusiasm and tirelessness, Prof. Vijayvargay has been instrumental in almost everything that occurs on-campus, the most prominent being two international conferences in Jaipuria Jaipur.

“I was the coordinator for APORS-2009, held between the 6th and 9th of December 2009. I was also the Convener for the International Conference on Sustainable Business: Managerial Implications and Challenges (ICSBMC-12) held between the 7th and 9th of December 2012. In both these conferences, the students learned new trends of sustainability in business through experts from industry, IIMs, IITs and other B-schools. They also learnt how to organise national level events.”

Over his six years at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Prof. Vijayvargay has held various key positions, such as that of Evaluation Coordinator from 2007-10, and the Admissions Coordinator for the PGDM and PGDM Retail batch from 2008-10. Since June 2012, he has been shouldering the responsibility of Chairperson, Student Affairs, and he’s enjoying every bit of it!

“In my experience, students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. The test of a good teacher lies not in his or her students’ ability to answer all his questions; but in inspiring the students to come up with questions that even the teacher will find hard to answer. That is why I am constantly reading new books and searching for new ways to increase the productivity and effectiveness of my teaching. I have attended four FDPs on different disciplines in IIM Bangalore, IIM Kozhikode and IIT Kanpur. Every year, I focus on adding new business trends within my courses.”

Prof. Vijayvargay has published two papers at an international level, and six papers at a national level so far. To his credit, he has also edited a book on “CREATING A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS: Managerial Implications and Challenges”, published by Bloomsbury in 2012. Prof. Vijayvargay describes the atmosphere at Jaipuria Institute of Management as “congenial and professional”, which allows the faculty to make substantial contributions through quality teaching, publications, conferences, consulting project (RUIDP Project), etc. Prof. Vijayvargay believes that being a faculty member at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur is a matter of great pride for him.

Jaipuria Noida Placement Update

“Thanks to the grooming at Jaipuria Institute of Management, when the right time and placement opportunity did come, i was absolutely ready for it!” – Sidharth Rai

For Sidharth Rai, life at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida has been too good to be true. The teaching methodology at Jaipuria Institute of Management was truly unique. His professors believed that every student had his or her own strengths and they would spend much effort trying to identify these strong points , encourage them, and teach them accordingly. Sidharth believes that had it not been for his interest in Politics – which was encouraged and mentored at Jaipuria Institute of Mangement – he would not have cracked the prized profile of a Probationary Officer with Federal Bank.

“I was targetting the Banking industry and Federal Bank was one of my top preferences. During the Federal Bank on-campus recruitment process at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, I did fairly well in the aptitude rounds. I am quite good at Group Discussions, but so are many others. Luckily, the topic of my GD group turned out to be on the subject of politics, which is my favourite topic. At Jaipuria Institute of Management, I’ve been provided with numerous platforms to speak on a variety of political subjects. Therefore, my confidence was sky high.”

Sidharth cleared the GD with flying colours. The final round was an interview with the senior managers of Federal Bank.

“Before the placement season, we were taken through the recruitment process of all the participating companies, which was very helpful. Also, we were groomed intensely on interviewing techniques, during special sessions at Jaipuria Noida. I knew exactly what to expect, and knew that trying to be something that I was not would not work in front of these seasoned professionals. I was asked numerous questions concerning my background, and some questions about Banking. Very interestingly, I was also asked some more questions about the political issues and challenges facing the country. I realised the strong connect between the GD and interview and how the entire interviewing process is actually connected. I answered the questions as best as I could and in a pretty straightforward manner.”

Sidharth counts his placement as a Probationary Officer with Federal Bank as his greatest achievement till date. He believes that this is just the kind of beginning to his career that he was looking for.

“The placement season teaches you more about life than any other experience.Facing stern-faced interviewers, being asked uncomfortable questions, rapid fire questioning, standing out in a GD with peers, etc., is all a learning. The biggest lesson I learnt is that one must never loose patience; you are the right fit for some job and industry, and if you simply believe in yourself, that opportunity will come to you. Thanks to the grooming at Jaipuria Institute of Management, when the time and opportunity did come, I was absolutely ready for it!”
