Jaipuria Noida STUDENT Speaks

“I see myself at par and competing with IIM graduates, after passing out of Jaipuria Institute of Management.” – Bhavana Tandon

Bhavana Tandon joined Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida after her graduation in Commerce from Daulat Ram College (DU). Bhavana, who was recognised as ‘The Best All-Round Student’ at DRC, is leaving no stone unturned to leave a mark in the history of Jaipuria Institute of Management. So far, she has done an excellent job of it. Bhavana has successfully conducted numerous activities and events as the HR Coordinator, Coordinator of the Research Committee of the Finance Club ‘Hiranya’, and an active co-coordinator of ‘Spardha’- the Annual Sports Meet of 2012-2013 – during her first year at Jaipuria Noida. Her hard work was recently recognised when she was made the Vice-President of the Internal Committee for her final year at Jaipuria Institute of Management.

“All these responsibilities have made me realise just how we are accountable and responsible for a task as in the corporate world. I tried my best to be an active participant in almost all the activities in and around the campus (Collage Making, Poster Making, Mind Game, Article Writing, Singing and Shot put). I’ve had the opportunity to attend numerous conferences and seminars and represented our college at Amity, Jaipuria Jaipur, the OOH Conference, etc. I also found the wonderful opportunity of working on a LIVE project with Dalmia Healthcare Ltd.”

Bhavana Tandon hails from Mirzapur – a place between Allahabad and Varanasi – but has been staying in Delhi for the last seven years now. Though she comes from a business family, Bhavana counts herself fortunate to have parents with a broad world-view, who insisted on her being independent and capable of earning a better living.

“It was the lure of quality education that drove me towards Jaipuria. I could see myself at par, and competing with, IIM graduates after passing out of Jaipuria Institute of Management. The constant support from all the faculty members cannot be explained in words. It is as if we are family of Jaipurians. Faculty members are the strongest pillars of Jaipuria. Irrespective of the time of the day, they are always keen to help you out. They go out of their way to find time for you always; the only pre-condition is that you should be interested in learning new things. They are caring and loving, treating you as their own children.”

Bhavana spends her leisure time solving Sudoku and other puzzles, listening to songs, and going on adventure trips like trekking, skiing, water rafting, mountaineering… things she had never done before coming to Jaipuria Institute of Management. She has a passionate inclination towards social causes, working with visually challenged students, Old Age Homes, HIV/ AIDS infected people, and the ‘Tobacco Free Brigade’.

“My most memorable time in Jaipuria as a first year student would be the long hours spent in the cabins of faculty members, discussing issues related to academics or my personal development. Seniors, too, play a big role in Jaipuria Institute of Management, acting as a source of inspiration for juniors.”

On passing out from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Bhavana plans to crack the profile of an Investment Banker or a Financial Advisor, Researcher, or Credit Analyst.

Bhavana Tandon’s testimonial by Dr. Prabhat Pankaj, Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Pankaj was Bhavana’s teacher in Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida.

“Bhavana is an exceptional student, with a flair for academics and learning. She is a good reader and I find that she is ready to learn from any circumstances. She is quite logical and precise in her expression, and very knowledgeable. She is a hard worker that one can rely on. I am sure she has all the qualities needed to excel in her life and career. I wish her good luck.”

Alumni Speak Jaipuria Lucknow

“Thanks to the never-say-die spirit given to us at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow, within a month of moving to Delhi, i found a placement with Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd.” – Vinay Kumar Pundir

In early 1997, Vinay Kumar Pundir – while still in his final year – was looking at various placement options that were coming his way at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. There were quite a few offers, including one from Kanoria Chemicals. However Vinay, along with a couple of his colleagues from Jaipuria Lucknow, decided to play for bigger stakes.

“We decided to shift base to Delhi, which was a big challenge for a fresh management graduate. Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow might today be one of the top B-schools in North India, but back then in 1997, we were the first batch. Thanks to the never-say-die spirit given to us at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow, within a month I found a placement with Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd. After that, there was no turning back!”

Vinay Kumar Pundir grew by leaps and bounds at Motherson Sumi, handling project after project – each time with more work, more value and more learning. From managing small OEMs as a Management Trainee, Vinay has grown to currently handling world class global OEMs like Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz and John Deere as a Senior Manager. Based out of Pune, Vinay also handles leading Indian auto manufacturers Mahindra & Mahindra, among many others.

“A practical approach, the ability to execute the application of a concept, and the attitude to deliver – these are some of the critical elements of a Jaipuria grooming which are of great value to me even today. The maximum learning we got was during formal and informal discussions with the faculty members. Since we were the first batch, we established ourselves by doing all the work ourselves under the guidance of faculty members. This gave us confidence and strength to face corporate challenges as well.”

While Vinay is in touch with most of his course-mates, he never fails to underline the fact that “Dr. Mussanna is our facbeook”.

“Unlike today, when we passed out of Jaipuria, there was a scarcity of communication channels. However, we always knew where our faculty were and in one way or the other, we kept in touch with them. Through them, we rediscovered lost friends and batch-mates and got back into the network.”

Over these 16 years, Vinay has risen step by step up the corporate ladder with hard, diligent work, making a respectable position for himself in the industry. He saw an opportunity in every challenge; so much so, that he today handles a business that is 25 times in size compared to his earlier days with Motherson Sumi.

“In a highly competitive world, where the differentiators of your proposal/ product are wafer thin, winning contracts and projects is intensely challenging. There were certain businesses which I managed to win despite all odds. All I can tell my young colleagues who are still in Jaipuria Institute of Management is that it is you who control your destiny – no one else does. So instead of waiting for your institute, your faculty, your relatives or your superiors to come and help you, go forward and seek their guidance on how to deliver.”

Vinay Kumar Pundir sees himself incharge of a much bigger portfolio at Motherson Sumi, handling business value that is 10 times what he is currently handling. He believes that in some small measure, alumni like him have been responsible for bringing a good name to Jaipuria Institute of Management.

“The flora and fauna of the huge Jaipuria campus at Lucknow provide great opportunities for photography.” – Avanikant Mishra

Avanikant Mishra is on a high. About to complete his first year at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow, Avanikant has been selected as the Coordinator of the Marketing Club, and is also part of the Media Relations Club (MRC) of Jaipuria Lucknow. Avanikant believes this is largely because he is a good learner, an eternal optimist and a passionate photographer.

“I belong to Bihar, was born and brought up in Kolkata, and did most of my schooling in Patna and Ranchi. You will always find me clicking random pictures. The flora and fauna of the huge Jaipuria campus at Lucknow provide great opportunities for photography.”

Known among his course-mates for his understanding of the ‘value for money’, Avanikant shortlisted Jaipuria Lucknow on three parameters – target industry, RoI (Return on Investment) and Rankings.

“I have always wanted to be a part of PSUs. If you see the placement records, you will find that the most number of Jaipuria Institute of Management alumni are placed with PSUs. Every year, government banks recruit from the Jaipuria campus in great numbers. Return on investment is 100% at Jaipuria, since you acquire a very wide knowledge base, experience and exposure. Also, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow has been ranked 6th in B-schools in Northern India.”

Apart from MRC( Media Relation Club), Avanikant rates the experience of working for Disha – a social initiative group of Jaipuria Lucknow and IIM Lucknow – as a part of the student interface committee, as one of the most memorable parts of his first year at Jaipuria Institute of Management.

“Each day spent in Jaipuria is memorable. I’ve come across a lot of things in the last one year which I never imagined I would’ve experienced. The high points have been winning awards in dramatics, being felicitated by the MRC Chairperson, Ojas Night and Talash Night; and I’ve captured all these moments – and many more – in my camera. The faculty members at Jaipuria Lucknow are very experienced and have lot of knowledge to share with us. In fact, some of our faculty members are guest faculty at IIM Lucknow. Our professors don’t just guide us in class, but are always there for students beyond class and college hours.”

Avanikant observes that Jaipuria Lucknow fosters a very deep bond between seniors and juniors, because in his view the seniors are more like “elder brothers-cum-pals”. He is positive that, two years down the line, he will be able to find a suitable placement in his target industry, which will pave his way to the senior executive level in the organisation he serves.

According to him real spiritualism lies in living a kind and large hearted life which has no place for I, me and myself. He also requested the students to think about why the Indian culture is accepted and recognized as the best culture in the whole world? He gave a very small example to explain this further by saying that if western students would be asked , Who is the greatest King on earth and Why?, they would take names of people who have earned a lot of wealth and land. But if Indians are asked the same question their answer will mention kings like Raja Ram or Raja Harishchandra who were great in deeds and character. He urged the students to work in the true spirit of being a professional and quoted Subroto Baghchi from his book, The Professional, “ Professional is somebody who works unsupervised, who is proactive and he/she is the one who declares completion of any task as per his/her standards”.

Dr. Rajiv Ranjan Thakur, Director, while presenting the Progress Report of the Institute described the year 2012-13 as an ‘eventful year full of excitement, learning and progress’. “I remind every batch at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, that one must care about the process, and not just the outcome; every visionary the world has ever seen has done just that.” – Professor Sonali Singh

Process oriented, meticulous and organised, Professor Sonali Singh is known to be the perfect Quantitative Techniques and Operations teacher in Jaipuria Institute of Management. A core faculty member at Jaipuria Noida, Professor Sonali Singh is an MPhil in Operations Management and has over nine years of teaching experience.

“I am passionate about teaching. I really enjoy teaching quantitative papers like Statistics, and Operations Research, simply because they are always evolving. With the world grappling with challenges of data clutter management, waste data management and, of course, tools for Big Data tabulation and analysis, the subject is only getting more critical for management students.”

It is for this reason that Professor Sonali Singh constantly invites eminent professionals from industry for guest talks. These interactions help the students of Jaipuria Institute of Management to appreciate the relevance of quantitative and statics-driven subjects in business.

“Not many newcomers understand the importance and motive of including quantitative subjects in their course. The challenge for a teacher in such a field lies in generating interest in the student. I use a lot of real life business applications in my classes at Jaipuria Noida, and keep my students involved in numerous course exercises.”

Professor Sonali Singh believes that like every profession, teaching comes with its highs and lows.

“Personally, I have experienced many great moments in my teaching career. A good day can leave you happy and enthusiastic, and feeling on top of the world! There are days when students seem very participative, and then there are days when they seem not so connected. A teacher has to keep reinventing herself or himself to keep the class participative and interested.”

Without fail, Professor Sonali Singh dedicates a portion of each day to reading articles and global updates on the subject she’s teaching the next day in her class at Jaipuria Noida. She promptly responds to her mails, clears her desk, and prepares well in advance for forthcoming tasks. She believes her own conduct will inspire her students at Jaipuria Noida to understand how essential time management is.

“If there is one lesson that I try to impart to every batch at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida, it is – ‘Care about the process and not just the outcome; every visionary that the world has ever seen has done just that’.”

Professor Sonali believe that the best thing that students learn in Jaipuria Institute of Management is the ability to work with others and share their success.

“My industry experience helps me establish and deliver the connection between theory and practice.” – Dr. Pratibha Wasan

If there is one word that defines Dr. Pratibha Wasan, it has to be ‘Excellence’. Dr. Wasan’s tryst with excellence began much before she moved the academia. Way back in 2003, as a greenhorn business consultant at HCL Infosystems, young Pratibha – straight out of a top notch B-school – was awarded the ‘Excellence in Performance’ award with barely two years of service under her belt. It is this spirit of delivering quality that Dr. Pratibha Wasan has been bringing everyday to her classrooms over the last nine years.

“Jaipuria Institute of Management attracts good quality students. However, even good students can loose interest if they find the learning to be boring, difficult, complex and theoretical. My industry experience helps me establish and deliver the connection between theory and practice. It has given me an insight into corporate functioning, its behaviour, value systems, culture, challenges and realities, which I now pass on to my students.”

For Dr. PratibhaWasan, the academic experience is “ongoing, delightful and self-rewarding”. As an Assistant Professor – Finance, she takes quite a few subjects, but finds teaching Financial Accounting to first year students the most rewarding.

“In first year, atleast 50% of the students are from a non-commerce background, and carry a lot of apprehension about accounting and finance. In contrast, the commerce students look overconfident in the course and show dismay at what more needs to be learnt in accounting. I enjoy leveling the playing field for both groups of students through my teaching style, pedagogy and management orientation in the course. In fact one of the students, Gaurav, of the PGDM 2010-12 batch actually said to me, ‘I thought I am a commerce graduate with sound accounting knowledge… what new things could I learn? But day one in the Jaipuria class, and I feel I know nothing so far’. This is because accounting is quite different from having a managerial perspective.”

Dr. Pratibha Wasan keeps herself updated on the latest teaching techniques by attending workshops on mentoring, financial data analysis, financial statement analysis and business research methods. Infact, in one of the workshops on Financial Statement Analysis that was conducted by the PhD Chamber of Commerce in 2011, she had gone as a participant. But at the end of the two-day workshop, she was acknowledged as a great asset for the workshop resource person, since Dr. Wasan could assist her in clearing the doubts of many other participants, many of whom were entrepreneurs who wanted to learn financial statement preparations and reading. Post the event, she was even inquired after for consulting.

“I am delighted when my students achieve new heights. In fact, just yesterday, Shweta from the PGDM 2010-12 batch came to visit me and shared that when she joined Edelweiss, she was happy to find that all the derivative trading strategies she was asked to deal with had been thoroughly discussed and demonstrated in class. It put her in a commanding position from the first day of her corporate career. It is not the gratitude, but the achievements of my students, that makes my day.”

Dr. Wasan describes her teaching experience with Jaipuria Institute of Management as “enriching and great!” She finds her students aware and anxious to learn, coming from good academic backgrounds and excellent set of minds to groom as managers. Dr. Pratibha Wasan feels that faculty development programmes conducted by Jaipuria Institute of Management have enabled her to use interactive, practical, interesting and relevant course content and pedagogical tools.

"How Manager’s job Negotiate and Convince people and bring different kinds of people together.” – Snehlata Kashyap

“I now understand group dynamics better. Know how to negotiate and convince people and have understood that a manager’s job is to bring different kinds of people together.” – Snehlata Kashyap

Snehlata Kashyap is described by her batchmates at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore, as ‘highly disciplined, sincere, tomboyish and a real foodie!’ Highly creative by nature, Snehalata wants to reinvent or improve most things around her. Beyond her classroom hours, she is either seen reading books, or painting, or exploring and collecting coins.

“I enjoy being in all places at the same time; trying to put my legs, hands, or head in everything that’s going on at Jaipuria Indore. The most interesting thing is managing the mess that I create for myself by taking on so many responsibilities. I have been a core committee member for all the events that were held in Jaipuria Indore in our first year – Encore, Finance, Marketing and HR conclaves, E-week and the Big Data event.”

Snehalata is now the coordinator of Jaipuria Indore’s MRC. She is also on the Sports committee as well as the Library committee. She finds great satisfaction in being a part of UGAM, an evening school initiative by Jaipuria Indore for Dakachya village kids. In fact, Snehalata has left a mark on other Jaipuria campuses as well, winning the Rangoli competition (Ojas) at Jaipuria Lucknow, and Kalakrati (Abhyudaya) at Jaipuria Jaipur. Within Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore, she was the winner of the Best Marketing Plan (Marketing Wizard), as well as Skit, Rangoli, and Face Painting competitions during Jai Utsav.

“I was in search of the best MBA colleges in Indore and other cities where I could explore myself. Not only is the ‘Jaipuria Institute of Management’ brand well-reputed, but it also allows you diversified areas of specialization, has excellent mentors, beautiful infrastructure, and convenient fees for MBA courses. The concept of complete digitalization of management education only makes Jaipuria Indore more attractive as an option.”

Snehalata strongly believes that Jaipuria Institute of Management, despite being around only for a decade-and-half, has emerged as one of the top five Education Groups in India because of its faculty.

“It took us some time to realize that our teachers discussed our individual talents and how best to groom us on the right lines, even during their break periods. They are always watching, guiding, and evaluating our growth on each level in the campus. The Director, Dr. J. P. Upadhyaya, is always on the lookout for the best for his students. He is always on our side. Often, in the middle of lectures, he steps in to ensure the quality of learning that we are getting. He puts in a lot of effort in conducting workshops for both faculty and students.”

Snehalata’s first year at Jaipuria Indore has been an extremely memorable one, especially the experience of sitting on the floor of the common room, collectively trying to finish off assignments after midnight. “Every single one of us felt we would not be able to pull it off. Yet, somehow every morning, we would have managed to complete our assignments. Jaipuria Institute of Management has brought about a remarkable change in me. I used to be a rebel without a cause; Jaipuria Indore has made me understand the importance of choosing my battles carefully. I now understand group dynamics better I have begun negotiating and convincing people and have understood that a manager needs to be able to bring different kinds of people together. I am now more mature and capable of taking far more sensible decisions than I took before joining Jaipuria Institute of Management.”

Snehalata Kashyap dreams of the day when she will be able to fulfill her mother’s every desire, make her family proud, and still have enough to distribute amongst the less fortunate. She is positive that the Jaipuria Institute of Management will help her realize this dream.

Shri Shreevats Jaipuria, Vice Chairman of the Jaipuria Group gave the vote of thanks. He injected a spirit of triumph and hope in the students, saying “Even though this foundation includes technical knowledge of academic subjects, I hope you will realize that academics are only part of your learning here. As important if not more, is to develop a mindset for continuous learning. Even as there will be no examinations and quizzes anymore, you will be required to learn and relearn from real life situations every day. And again , this learning will not be restricted to finance formulae, and marketing techniques, but will require you to understand and manage people, their fear, their needs and their aspirations above all else”. He thanked all who were present for the occasion.

After the grand convocation ceremony, Mr Ramesh Agarwal’s feedback spoke volumes about the strides Jaipuria, Indore has made in a short span of time saying “I congratulate you, Jaipuria- Indore, on the outstanding success of the convocation, and the last two academic years.
