Bank of India internship proves enlightening for Jaipuria Lucknow’s Bhoomika Agrawal.

A seven-week summer internship with Bank of India proved to be an educational experience for Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow student Bhoomika Agrawal.
“I learned how practical implementation is entirely different from the theoretical fundamentals,” she said. “It made me realize the importance of meeting targets on time and proving your credibility in the corporate world. The whole staff and officers at Bank Of India were very helpful and co-operative.”
During her internship, she worked on a project involving the comparison of products and services in the banking industry and Bank of India’s customer satisfaction.
She was also actively involved in deposit mobilisation campaigns organised by the Bank of India in most of its branches in Lucknow. As she says,  “I opened about 100 accounts per day on average, with two other marketing officers.”
The internship also instilled a new respect for the banking industry in Bhoomika.
“The work culture is very good and the conducive atmosphere made me feel at peace while working. It has instilled in me a strong desire to join a bank or for that matter,  any reputed firm with a good work culture.”
In particular, she cited Jaipuria’s “highly functional and active placement cell” which she said helps students to achieve their dream jobs.
“Overall,” said Bhoomika, “the placement process is very fair and gives equal opportunity to every student to attain his or her ultimate objective. The preparation process sets up every student to excel in the corporate world by enhancing our communication skills, strengthening our forte and overcoming our weaknesses. Individual attention is given to every student and everyone’s needs are catered to.”
An all-round student, she excels both academically and in athletics. Her hard work had finally paid of when she was awarded a scholarship of Rs. 75,000/- by Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow for securing 98.9 per cent in MAT 2011. Her string of achievements continues till date. She qualified in the GATE entrance exam with 89.2 per cent; was a Merit Holder for securing second position in B. Tech. Food Technology; got fifth position on National Science Day (2010) for her poster presentation. In the field of sports she was placed ninth in the 3.5 km cross- country race (University Athletics Meet, 2009). Bhoomika has bee actively involved in organising the Interdependence, Integration and Co-creation conference.
She also appreciates all the support she got from Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. “The best thing about Jaipuria is its ever-helpful and highly-qualified faculty members,” she said. “I enjoy being in Jaipuria because of the immense support I receive from my friends and peers.”
She continued in the same vein,  “Because of Jaipuria, I have enhanced my analytical, technical and communication abilities and since the institute has a good brand image and reputation, I hope to receive a good job in the future.”
Life at the Jaipuria Lucknow campus is enlivening, said Bhoomika, “all filled with fun, life, events and lots of study as well. Overall, it feels good to be a part of this college.”

Future Corporate houses to be powered by future managers from Jaipuria Indore.

Jaipuria Indore has already made itself well-known as the first B-school in South-East Asia to provide its students a completely digital business management education. Now, in yet another interesting move, it has announced the‘Young Enterprise Mentorship Programme’ or YEMP-CHISEL. As is suggested by the word ‘Chisel’, this programme will help chisel Small and Medium sized companies into corporate houses of the near future. The programme is all set to begin in the first week of September.
“An internship is single-dimensional – a project decided by the corporate house or a task to be fulfilled. But YEMP-CHISEL will be two-way traffic, where students will be equal participants in the decision-making process of a company,” says Kanak Gupta, one of the three faculty members of Jaipuria Indorespearheading the programme.
On the 1st of September 2012, students of Jaipuria Indorewill be organised intogroups of three and will begin a 20-month long association with selectedstart-up companies. The programme will encourage these student groups to act as ‘catalysts’ in the growth of their respective companies. Each group of students will be mentored by a faculty member from Jaipuria Indore for the entire duration. In the first week of the YEMP-CHISEL programme, these ‘catalysts’ will visit their respective YEMPees – as these enterprises are fondly called – and study their business philosophy, model and practices. Based on this feedback, the ‘catalysts’ will then create a roadmap to take their YEMPee to the next level. This roadmap will then be discussed with key members of the concerned company in October. In the beginning of November, these teams will take a viva, submit a project report and make a full-fledged ‘strategy and perspective’ presentation. The YEMPee concerned will be a part of the evaluating process, along with the Director and programme heads of Jaipuria Indore.
“This is absolutely amazing! I had never imagined I’d be a part of transforming a company while studying in a B-school!” says Shravanti from the 2011-13 batch of Jaipuria Indore.
“It is not a training exercise. This is the real deal,” says Jagdish Prabhat, one of the faculty members of Jaipuria Indore heading the programme. “All the faculty members have been engaged as mentors. Progress will be reported every two months, with a review of the work of the catalyst teams by the Director, the programme heads and the YEMPee management. If we are to make managers who will change the face of the Indian economy, we have to do it right now and right here.”
It is hoped that by developing a relationship early on with these future corporate houses, Jaipuria Indore will ensure that its students have a bright and promising future.

“An empowered employee gives his best"

Mr. Paritosh Vaishnav, Senior Executive (Human Resources) Gravita (India) Ltd., a leader in the lead battery business, delivered a guest lecture on ‘Managing Global Teams’ to second year students of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur on February 3rd, 2012. When asked about getting the best out of an employee he said, “An empowered employee is a responsible employee who gives his best. Rewards are just the consequence.” Since Gravita is an MNC, he spoke about managing teams in Nigeria, South Africa, Europe, and USA,and also discussed cross-cultural issueslike traditions, communication, dress, food, languages, and different greeting styles.He also touched upon the legal, environmental and social aspects of business in different areas. The discussion concluded with a comparison of workforce expectations from Asia, South Africa, Europe and America.
Gravita (India) Ltd came to Jaipuria Jaipur for recruitment two years back and is expected to make a visit in the near future as well.

Industrial tour to Tata Motors for Jaipuria Lucknow students.

Students of the regular PGDM, PGDM – Financial Services and PGDM – Retail Management courses of Jaipuria Lucknow visited the Tata Motors Plant at Chinhat, Lucknow, for the 7th consecutive year. As a part of their industrial interface programme, the would-be managers at Jaipuria Lucknow took management tips from professionals at Tata Motors and observed the globally acclaimed corporate manufacturing practices of Tata Motors.
The youngsters from Jaipuria Lucknow were shown all the action in the Chinhat plant, from production plans for the day, stock and raw materials storage and movement and inventory control, to supply chain management. The heads of various departments briefed the students from Jaipuria Lucknow and answered their questions patiently. The future managers were also exposed to the world-renowned Tata Motors methodology of Lean Production i.e. procurement of raw materials in small lots from nearby vendors.
“As an HR student, for me the most interesting part of the visit was talking to HR executives of the Chinhat plant about the challenges of labour allocation at various work stations, issues-resolution in the huge plant, best manufacturing practices and safety measures adopted during the production run,” says Harsha Mishra, a second year student.
During the visit, the Jaipuria students also had the opportunity to interact with the top management of Tata Motors, Lucknow, on the factory floor. The entire initiative, led by Professor Vinod Kumar Chib from the Operations Management department of Jaipuria Lucknow, was quite successful.
Over these seven years of association, the bond between the Chinhat Plant of Tata Motors and Jaipuria Lucknow has become stronger. Senior managers from Tata Motors visit the Jaipuria Lucknow campus to interact with the students and faculty on a regular basis, with the most recent visit being that of Mr. Tribhuvan Kumar, AGM. Mr. C. V. Singh, Executive Vice President (Operations) often finds time to come to Jaipuria Lucknow and share his experiences in the Lucknow plant as well as his earlier experiences in Tata-Daewoo Motors Limited, Korea. Mr. Alok Saxena, Plant in-charge, Lucknow, has also inspired students of Jaipuria Lucknow through his visits and conversations.
It is expected that students of Jaipuria Lucknow will continue benefiting from the wisdom of Tata Motors professionals, and be inspired to do well in their corporate careers.

Jaipur Darshan With Nikita And Prachi, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur has recently welcomed the 2012-14 batch of Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) students. As per tradition, these first-year students were taken around Jaipur, to help them understand local culture and traditions, and enjoy the great City of Maharajas. Nikita Thomas and Prachi Jaiswal, both students of PGDM 2012-14, look back on the most exciting moments in their ‘JAIPUR DARSHAN’.

Nikita –Wasn’t the outing fun? Did you enjoy yourself?

Prachi – It was absolutely fantastic! I think we started our day on the right note by visiting the famous Kagazii Industry’. The owner, Mr. Mohammad Sharif – an entrepreneur who specialises in manufacturing and exporting handmade paper, made from old scraps, clothes and used paper – is really great. I mean, here is a man making the ‘best out of waste’.

Nikita – hmmm… I think it was a good idea to visit not just the manufactured product outlet, but the factory as well. It was really a great learning experience, watching the process of making paper from waste. Those ladies expertly sorting out the scraps and clothes, and then boiling and churning the scraps in huge machines with added colour, were working pretty hard. I found the whole process pretty interesting, from the scraps being put on a sieving tray, wrapped on both the sides with a cloth and pressed, to the paper being hung for drying after it had been pressed. They looked like hundreds of flags!

Prachi – I simply loved the printing on the dried paper. Mr. Mohammad Sharif told me that the paper lasts for more than 10 years. The Kagazi outlet was so full of dazzling and beautiful products. I was compelled to buy a diary as a souvenir.

Nikita – I think the next stop, the magnificent Amer Fort, was absolutely stunning! Yes, climbing those huge steps was exhausting, but once we got to the top, the view was worth it. The fort tells us about the magnificent history of the great Sawais of Jaipur. We really clicked a lot of photos, didn’t we?

Prachi – We certainly did. Remember the ‘Jal Mahal’ and ‘Hawa Mahal’ we saw on our way to the Pink City Mall? Weren’t they grand?

Nikita – They sure were. By the time I reached Pink City Mall, I was so hungry I just can’t tell you…

Prachi – So was I, and so was everybody… after all the walking around at Amer Fort. How we charged into the Food Court!

Nikita – But the shopping after that was so cool; we almost bought out the entire Mall! The event of the day was when the two of us missed our bus! While the rest of the course was on its way to the Birla Temple, we were totally lost in buying stuff. Remember the panic created by our absence… thank God our warden calmly told us to catch an auto to the Birla Temple. Everyone was relieved to see us, but they really asked us a lot of questions.

Prachi- I think the temple was enchanting. The inlay work on the marble was simply magnificent. In fact, my fatigue vanished with the soothing ‘bhajans.’ It was the right place to conclude our ‘Jaipur Darshan.’

Nikita – I guess the day was at an end so we had to get back to college. I’m looking forward to many such outings now that we are at the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur.

Anmol Aggarwal And Prateek Shukla’s View Of The Pink City, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur has recently welcomed the 2012-14 batch of Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) students. On the 7th of July, 2012, these first-year students were taken on a trip around the landmarks of Jaipur, to help them understand the Pink City better. Anmol Agarwal and Prateek Shukla, both students of PGDM 2012-14, take us through their first tour of the city.

Prateek – I think the trip around Jaipur was really cool. What do you think?

Anmol – Awesome and unforgettable! I learned a lot of things, and enjoyed myself a lot. In fact, I woke up very early in the morning that day simply out of excitement. The first stop – the Kagazi Industry – made me realise that you don’t necessarily need crores to start a venture; it can be done with scrap as well.

Prateek – Very true. In fact, I had no idea about the process of paper-making. When I came to know that they make paper with old clothes and waste paper, it amazed me. I think this was the quickest way I could figure out the real idea behind the word ‘recycle’. As a management student, I feel very lucky that Jaipuria Jaipur started us out with this visit. I’ve got the message loud and clear that good entrepreneurship is all about a good idea, some managerial skills, innovation and the ability to take a calculated risk.

Anmol – How did you like Amer Fort? I found it absolutely fascinating!

Prateek – Same here. I could almost imagine the Rajput Kings treading across the fort walls. I think one look at the glorious fort was good enough to understand the ancient Rajputana culture. I could imagine how difficult it must’ve been for an attacking army to get past the moat and climb the wall to take control of Amer Fort.

Anmol – Absolutely. The amazing part was moving straightaway from Amer Fort to the huge Pink Square Mall; seemed like travelling in time from the 16th century to the 21st century. In fact, on the way to the Pink Square Mall, I was going blind with hunger! I was unable to see the beauty of Hawa Mahal or Jal Mahal clearly…

Prateek – I know. The way you rushed up to the food court at Pink Square Mall said it all! But I really liked Hawa Mahal and Jal Mahal. They were so different from Amer. The Queens must’ve really enjoyed staying surrounded by water. Of course, there was a military reason for this. The water body around the Jal Mahal acted as an obstacle.

Anmol – I really would like to know more about how the Jal Mahal was constructed. I’m sure I’ll get a lot of opportunities to do that in the two years at Jaipuria Institute of Management.

Prateek – Sure. I guess this was just the trailer. The Birla Mandir was a nice place to signoff for the day. It’s always great to start something new with the blessings of the Gods.

Dr. Manisha Seth is not just a faculty member of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow for 8 years now, but also an alumna from the 1995-97 batch. One of the top 5 rank holders of her batch, Dr Seth joined Koshika Telecom Ltd., a telecom service provider, after completing her PGDBM from Jaipuria Lucknow.
“My two years in the corporate world, I realised that I was more inclined towards teaching. After working there for five years, I joined Jaipuria Lucknow in 2004, and since then I have been working here as a faculty.”
Dr. Manisha Seth is currently an Assistant Professor in Human Resources & Organisational Behaviour at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. She has attended & contributed research papers in various international & national conferences; published papers in reputed Journals; coordinated conferences, seminars and workshops, and conducted management development programmes.
Dr Manisha Seth adopts a ‘beyond text book’ approach as a method of teaching, and lays more emphasis on ‘learning by doing’. Discussion on current & emerging HR issues are an essential component of HR & OB courses that she teaches at Jaipuria Lucknow.
Another teaching approach Dr. Manisha has adopted is to ensure that students get enough industrial exposure within the classroom itself. “I have been trying to increase the industry-academic interface component of my courses through involvement of my students in workshops, conferences, MDP’s and HRD network meetings. I invite industry experts to the classrooms to give practical inputs to students.” This provides a real world experience to the students.
Dr. Seth remembers her two years at Jaipuria Lucknow, as a student, as the most remarkable years of my life, helping her grow tremendously both on the personal as well as academic front.
“The interaction between the faculty and the students was very open and encouraging. We could approach and discuss our problems with our faculty without any hesitation and that bond remains strong till date. My association with Jaipuria Lucknow is 17 years now. My sense of freedom and comfort is very high here. I have been honing my research interests; I have been floating new electives as per the identified needs of industry. I have spent the happiest and most memorable years of my life at Jaipuria Lucknow.”
And being an alumni, she has also decided to take on herself to develop a vibrant and engaged alumni community, “My major administrative responsibility has been in the alumni committee of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow. I played an active role in streamlining the processes, conducting frequent chapter meets and generating enthusiasm and interest amongst the alumni. Being an alumni I get a great response, work around the fact that she is an alumni head.”
For Dr. Manisha Seth, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow is a home away from home.

Isha Misra tells us about the 9 rounds of placement process that helped her get her dream job with Hyundai Motors.

I am currently working with Hyundai MOBIS (Hyundai Motors Group) as a Management Trainee (Marketing) – Parts Division. My job description basically consists of handling all the communications and preparing them from time to time. This includes preparing all Report Approvals, Internal Communications, Circulars, the Quarterly Newsletter, etc. I also  handle the installation and follow-up for display stands, display kit dispatches, the leaflet dispatch every quarter, design and photo shoots related to those leaflets, conducting surveys every quarter on challenging topics and the vendor selection for the designing of the newsletter & leaflets. Finally,  data extraction from our AMOS and DPOS software also falls to me.. Even though it sounds like a lot, this is just a brief outline of my job profile.
The placement process for this company was obviously quite rigorous and consisted of 9 rounds. The first round was a technical interview and questions were asked from the spheres of marketing, strategic marketing, the automobile industry and about the recently held auto expo. The second round was another technical round conducted by another marketing head of the company. The third was an HR round in which questions were asked in order to judge my ability to fit into the company’s culture. Then there were a string of technical rounds with other department heads and a final HR confirmation round through a  video conference with the GM (HR) of the Chennai office.
With so many rounds and so much pressure, no wonder that I needed support and guidance. In that, the faculty at Jaipuria Noida  came through for me and were very supportive throughout the placement month. They gave us interview questions and guided us by arranging crucial mock placement sessions whenever a company visit was due.
The 2 years in Jaipuria Noida have been a joy ride with all the backing that I’ve got from the  faculty and placement coordinators. I have learnt and grown a lot, both professionally and personally, in these years. The whole experience was intense and will  certainly helped me a lot in my professional life.
